A Message from Tudor Oaks Administrator Diane Jahnke Since joining Tudor Oaks as Executive Director in 2017, I’ve become immersed in campus life—and enjoyed the excitement every day brings. This wonderful community is a thriving campus for Independent living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Respite, Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. We are located on 110 beautiful park-like acres in a country setting, yet close to all the local attractions.

Lifestyles departments. For example, the Tudor Oaks Senior Olympics rally residents’ competitive spirits in a variety of Olympic style games. Yards games in the Glenn Cove Sports Center have become a tradition in the summer, while winter games occur indoors within the aquatic and fitness centers. Teams are assembled, the competition begins and team spirit prevails.

With so much to offer, residents can select from a variety of opportunities to keep themselves active and informed. Lectures and entertainers provide opportunities for residents to gather and challenge their sense of adventure and curiosity. A variety of educators, professionals and performers share their expertise during classes and programs, keeping residents engaged and informed.

As a lover of theater, I hold a special place in my heart for our community’s repertory group, the Tudor Oaks Players (TOP). In TOP, residents write, produce and act in plays they create, as well as make all props and costumes. The plays are comical, serious, reflective and entertaining for those individuals involved—as well as for their audiences. A standing “O” is a standard response to these always entertaining presentations. In December, the Tudor Oaks Players wrote and performed “Here for the Holidays.” I was honored to be part of the cast and truly enjoyed the comradery before, during and after the play.

The Lifestyle department works with the Resident Activity Committee to explore and determine interests and vacation destinations.

Residents have enjoyed many trips together, exploring the sites in Washington D.C., New York, Oregon and more. These are truly fun outings for Tudor Oaks residents.

In addition to offering rich opportunities to discover history, theater, politics and other entertainment, these trips allow true friends to appreciate time together while sightseeing across America.

Meet the Tudor Oaks Players

Work has begun on another Tudor Oaks Players (TOP) production to be staged in The Olive Wood Theater this spring. The Tudor Oaks resident repertory theater company has doubled in size since its first production in April, 2017—an old-fashioned radio show complete with live sound effects, commercials, news briefs, comedy, and western melodrama. Since then, the group has produced four additional shows.

While brainstorming show ideas, TOP company members work together to look for scripts or create original content. Most scripts are written by Tudor Oaks residents. For one production, the group hosted a murder mystery dinner with 70 character descriptions (including the potential murderer) written for all audience members who wished to participate. Set in the ’80s at a class reunion, residents sported big hair, bright makeup and “Miami Vice” style clothing to bring the show to life.

Most recently, the group produced “Here for the Holidays,” with scenes spanning from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve. There was plenty of laughter, singing and even a few tender moments. The Tudor Oaks Players hope to hit a homerun with their next production—a baseball-themed show slated for early spring. See you there!

Occupational

Occupational therapy increases independence by teaching safe ways to perform daily tasks, such as getting dressed and preparing meals. Our therapists also guide patients through exercises that protect muscles and joints to prevent future injury.

Speech-Language

Our speech-language pathologist evaluates and treats patients for hearing, language, communication, and swallowing difficulties. Therapies aim to improve speech, comprehension, and oral motor skills, including safe eating strategies.

How Tudor Oaks and other ABHM communities are leading the way to better hearing.

Hearing loss is a natural part of aging. But that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Missing the details of conversations, entertainment and other activities means missing out on life. If left unaddressed, hearing loss can have other unforeseen consequences, including mental decline, social isolation and depression.

That’s why Tudor Oaks and parent-company ABHM have partnered with Eversound, to help residents hear better, stay engaged and live life to the fullest.

Hearing tech designed for seniors Eversound designs and develops proprietary audio technologies to help seniors hear more clearly during movies, presentations and other group activities. Their patented wireless headphone system is specifically tuned to the needs of seniors and provides an enhanced listening experience compared to conventional hearing aids.

“While hearing aids amplify all sound, Eversound focuses in on the source of what someone is listening to and amplifies that specifically,” says Leah Atz, Wellness Director at ABHM’s Thorne Crest Senior Living Community in Albert Lea, MN.

ABHM wellness directors like Leah create and plan entertaining programs for residents of each community. Unfortunately residents may not participate simply because they struggle to hear clearly due to natural age-related hearing loss.

Eversound, which is designed specifically for older adults, improves hearing clarity by providing direct audio to users’ ears. ABHM’s communities using Eversound report significant improvements in resident participation, engagement, well-being and quality of life.

Breaking age-old sound barriers Thorne Crest was the first of ABHM’s communities to use the Eversound technology, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive.

“You really see Eversound’s impact when residents have headsets on and they just light up,” Leah says. “It’s like night and day.”

A partnership to improve lives After experiencing success at Thorne Crest, Eversound will soon go nationwide, thanks in large part to its partnership with ABHM. “We are pleased to be partnering with American Baptist Homes of the Midwest and offering their residents this new experience,” says Matt Reiners, VP of Customer Impact and co-founder
