For resident Robert Jack and his wife, Tudor Oaks offers the perfect lifestyle. “My wife and I toured eight different independent communities and Tudor Oaks was by far the best. We like the fact that we don’t need to move to a different facility if we need more care. I also enjoy Friday night movies and coffee with ‘the guys.’”

Tudor Oaks has thought of everything for every stage of retirement. Seniors can be as active and as involved in the community as they wish, or can enjoy the quiet of their apartment. Fun activities include book clubs, fishing, gardening, card games, and a variety of entertainment options. • The Mighty Oak Wellness Center that includes an indoor warm water pool, whirlpool, fitness center, and professional fitness programs.

• The Olive Wood Theater, with its huge 8’ by 14’ screen for enjoying movies, sporting events, educational programs, and TV. The theater also offers T-Cell technology access for those with hearing aids equipped to receive the transmission. This feature allows them to clearly hear the wonderful musical entertainment

or educational presentations.

• The “Man Cave,” which is a great place for the guys to escape, relax in the lounge, watch a game, play cards, or swap stories with fellow cave dwellers.

There is also a workshop where you can continue to enjoy your hobbies and a heated double stall garage to wash your car.

• The Art Gallery provides an ever-changing display of artists from southeastern Wisconsin.

Tudor Oaks & ABHM expand memory care in response to

A GROWING DEMAND As people live longer lives, their needs for healthcare and wellness services change. Studies have shown that the older a person gets, the greater their risk for developing memory issues such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The reality is that one in eight people age 65+ has Alzheimer’s disease and almost half of seniors 85 and older have been diagnosed with some degree of memory impairment. As the population of seniors increases dramatically every year, so does the demand for memory care services. Senior living communities all over the country are creating new memory care facilities

to keep up with the demand.

Here at Tudor Oaks, part of American Baptist Homes of the Midwest (ABHM), we’ve developed our own memory care center and offer 22 private memory care suites. In fact, four of our fellow ABHM communities have opened new memory care centers within the last 18 months.

In Wheat Ridge, CO, our Mountain Vista community recently unveiled a brand new building dedicated exclusively for assisted living memory care, with 22 private memory care suites and an expanded program of

support services. Nearby, in downtown Denver, The Community at Franklin Park converted the top floor into a comprehensive memory care center. Trail Ridge in Sioux Falls, South Dakota expanded its existing assisted living services to include 22 private apartments in a new dedicated memory care wing.

Minnesota’s Thorne Crest has undergone a similar expansion and offers new memory care centers and services.

Our memory care center at Tudor Oaks provides a safe and comforting environment for residents living with concerns related to memory loss. Our specially trained staff develop personalized care plans and activity programs to meet the unique needs of each resident.

At Tudor Oaks and ABHM, our memory care philosophy is based on our commitment to care for the whole person while addressing each of the six dimensions of wellness. Families can be assured their loved one is safe and living to their greatest potential as a resident of the Tudor Oaks memory care center.

“It was hard to admit my mom needed memory care,” one family member shared. “It was more difficult for me to move my mom than it was for her to actually make the move. We are so relieved because she is so happy and having fun again.”

The Six Dimensions of Wellness in Action Whole person wellness is one of the core principles of Tudor Oaks and ABHM’s mission, “to create healthy Christian communities that empower older adults. We provide choices for housing, services, and technology that enrich body, mind, and spirit.”

One way our mission is carried out is through the Six Dimensional Model of wellness developed by the National Institute of Wellness. The categories of social, vocational, spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional wellness help guide many of the decisions we make regarding the services, opportunities, and atmosphere that enable our residents to reach their optimal state of wellness.

At Tudor Oaks, we actively renew our commitment to wellness with programs and activities designed to promote the six dimensions throughout daily life.

Social

Tudor Oaks encourages residents to stay socially connected both in and out of the community. A family-friendly campus makes it easy to maintain family bonds, while community events such as holiday parties and day trips foster strong social ties amongst residents in the community.

Vocational

Personal fulfillment can be found through continuing to engage in

learning, work, and volunteering throughout one’s lifetime. Tudor Oaks residents have plenty of opportunities to showcase talents and learn new skills. Residents tend gardens, compete in Senior Olympic games, and pursue passions new and old. Tudor Oak wellness director, Lisa Grimmer, says, “Residents like to become involved and volunteer around Tudor Oaks. They like to deliver the mail, help plant in the communal garden, or use the computer to do online research.”

The recently opened Glenn Goethel Sports Complex here at Tudor Oaks features Bocce ball, putting greens, horse shoes, and more in addition to a top-tier fitness equipment room. Spiritual

In 2011, ABHM set out to cultivate a more robust Spiritual Services program for residents.

All ABHM communities adopted the Association of Professional Chaplains’ Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains in Long-Term Care, which gave us a template for establishing consistent programs in each community. Today, ABHM has chaplains at every community, and we continue to expand and improve our spiritual programs.

Physical

ABHM V.P. of Quality and Program Development Tim O’Brien says, “Being physically well gives us independence, confidence, and allows us to do the things we enjoy.” To help residents feel their best, ABHM has dedicated space to fitness activities in every community.

Wellness is the Best Approach to Feeling Better, Stronger, Longer!

At Tudor Oaks our commitment to wellness is clearly seen throughout the campus. From the new senior sports center located outside the main entrance, that offers Bocce ball, a 3-hole putting green and Croquet to the indoor warm water pool and fitness rooms. An active lifestyle is the gateway to better health and ensures you get the most enjoyment out of all that Tudor Oaks has to offer. In addition to activities inside the community Tudor Oaks residents also have walking paths around the campus and access to Lake Brittany across McShane Drive.

To help residents improve their health, the Tudor Oaks wellness staff offers a number of fitness classes designed to increase strength, improve balance and boost cardio function. The class activities are also intended to promote mental and physical acuity by focusing on changes in speed and direction. These types of changes get residents thinking about performing several actions at a time, which improves fitness levels and mental awareness.

Residents also love the convenience of the indoor warm water pool where the Wellness team holds aquatic exercise classes, residents swim laps or play with their visiting grandchildren. Residents are also encouraged to invite guests over to enjoy the wellness center and use the specially designed fitness equipment to begin their journey to better health.

Just ask Terry, a Tudor Oaks resident who was managing several health issues related to mobility and weight gain. With the help of the wellness team she set goals, developed an exercise and nutritional program, and over time achieved what she set out to ac-

complish, a loss of 45 pounds.

When asked what played a major role in her success Terry said, “Access to the pool, fitness center, and wellness classes… along with a new sense of self-discipline and encouragement from the wellness staff were vital to my success.” Terry’s story illustrates how, at any point in your life you can make a change, see improvement and get healthy.

Mental

Tudor Oaks Uses Cutting Edge Technology to Improve Recovery

The mission of the Tudor Oaks rehab team is to help people regain previous levels of function and return home as soon as possible. Cynthia Traczek, physical therapy assistant and program director states, “rehabilitation gives individuals the opportunity and knowledge to restore their functional independence. Our new therapy gym and new private rehab rooms with private bathroom and shower, give residents the best in rehab care.”

Omni VR Virtual Rehabilitation System

Recently, an OmniVR Virtual Rehabilitation System was added to the therapy gym. The advanced, yet easy to use technology has a sophisticated 3D camera and special computer software to track a resident’s precise movements allowing them to interact in a virtual world. When asked about this new therapy residents respond, “Is the session over already?” having completed their therapy sessions without realizing it because the program is so much fun. When residents feel good and see their progress they become energized, which fuels their desire to complete their recovery. This is the type of outcome the Tudor Oaks team strives for.

In addition to the Omni VR System the rehab center is equipped with treadmills, recumbent bike, free weights and other equipment the staff uses to develop plans that help residents improve or regain strength, recover balance and overall functionality. “We gear the program and activities to what residents can do,” says Traczek.

Beyond physical therapies, Tudor Oaks also offers occupational therapy (OT) teaching new ways to perform life tasks and speech therapy that helps residents with language, communication and swallowing disorders to improve language expression, comprehension and other oral-motor skills.

Continuing to engage and challenge our mind with creative and intellectual pursuits as we age is vital to our wellbeing, helping to cultivate self-fulfillment and satisfaction. Tudor Oaks residents enjoy visits to community art galleries, participating in book clubs and crafting activities, and gathering for musical and educational events.

Emotional

For some people, aging can come with a variety of intense emotional and lifestyle changes that cause stress. It’s important to have a compassionate support system in order to maintain emotional health and stability during challenging periods. Tudor Oaks staff, social workers, chaplain, and fellow residents all come together to create a supportive community that offers the freedom, comfort, and security that sustain us through life’s emotional moments.

In promoting the six dimensions of wellness at Tudor Oaks, we hope that our residents start to appreciate the interconnectedness of wellness within the community. By living out the full potential of each dimension in their own lives, residents contribute to an environment and social network that supports wellness for the entire community.
