Chaplain’s Corner News and Notes Welcome to another month of our new “Normal” – I A Word From Jeanne

wish I had a crystal ball to be able to tell you who/ what/when/where/how and why things are going to be in the near, or for that matter, far future. Here at Tudor Oaks, because of our combined campus serving the most vulnerable population in different settings (Independent, Assisted, Memory care and Skilled nursing), we are just balancing the safety of everyone given some of us are out and about in our communities and in the community here. There’s just a lot to consider, along with the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), our State Department of Health, and our Waukesha County Health Department.

We have recently completed the first round of testing of all staff and the residents in the health center and assisted living with 1 employee from A.L. testing positive who is now recuperating at home under quarantine. That testing was a step toward opening up more areas of our campus. We anticipate the possibility of more testing required in the future.

The openings require proper planning and documentation of steps to assure our safety. The pool and fitness center are open now and the beauty salon will be opening on June 30th. We are currently working on plans to open some of our community rooms (Private Dining Room, OWT, Lamson Plaza) which will look quite different when this is done. A major consideration is occupancy based on providing social distancing between people and how to get these areas properly sanitized between people along with a myriad of other considerations to provide us all with the best protection from COVID19. Mask wearing is still an essential part of our day to day lives, as well, and will be required in these areas.

I soappreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation in all of this. These are historical times that I hope to never endure in my lifetime again. COVID-19 will have effects on our lives long into the future.

Around the Neighborhood Meet Robert Clemins Bob Clemins is a tall, happy go lucky guy who lives in Windsor Manor at Tudor Oaks. He sings or hums as he walks down the hall and says hello to anyone he meets along the way. Rose Dix, who also lives in Windsor Manor, says of her neighbor, “He never has anything bad to say about anybody. He’s also a really great storyteller and fantastic artist.” Art and woodworking are hobbies that Bob took up as an adult. He took classes in both through his neighborhood high school. He says he knew the woodworking teacher because Bob had been the man’s Boy Scout leader several years before.

Always the great storyteller, Bob is full of tales of growing up on the south side with his 3 brothers and a sister. At the age of 17 he tried to enlist in the service like two of his brothers but an eye problem kept him out at that point. He was able to enlist in the United States Army, where he served under General George Patton. After four years in Europe Bob returned home and learned to fly airplanes, which he turned into a long time hobby. He went to MATC to learn a trade as an electrician. Most of Bob’s 40 year career as an electrician for the City of Milwaukee was spent in the Bureau of Traffic Engineers. He returned to school a few times for more training which enabled him to move up in his department and fill a supervisory role.

Bob says he has more grandkids and great grandkids than he can count! Together with Arlene, his wife of 56 years, Bob had three sons and two daughters. He traveled the world with Arlene and says they only had one argument the entire time they were married. They ignored each other for the better part of three days and when they realized that neither one of them knew why they were angry in the first place they decided to not do that again. They had a love story that started with a blind date. Bob says his younger brother, Wally, kept pestering him to go out with a girl Wally worked with. In an effort to get his brother off his back Bob reluctantly said yes. He walked into the neighborhood bar to meet his date and was awe struck by the sight of a beautiful young lady. He said his thought was, “Holy crap, I hope that’s her!” Luckily for him, that beautiful lady was Bob’s date Arlene. It was truly love at first sight for both of them. (That makes you wonder if Wally is his favorite brother.)

Bob moved to Tudor Oaks in 2017. One of his sons was moving out of state and said he would feel better if Bob would consider looking at a senior living community. Bob opened the phonebook and that afternoon they toured Tudor Oaks. They pulled the car over on the way home to call Judy Radish and reserve one of the apartments he saw in Windsor Manor. Bob’s neighbors and all of the staff would agree that he is a great guy. He is creative, funny and always pleasant. He is a man of strong faith and when asked how he always maintains such a cheery outlook on life he explains, “There is no room in my life to get lost in anger so I just choose to be happy.” With that attitude, Bob also makes everyone around him happier too.

By Louise Osborn We all have favorite sermons we never forget. Of course, the pastors think their children’s sermons are what the congregations remember most! Dorene has saved all of her husband’s sermons. She has floor to ceiling bookshelves in her apartment. I’m sure she has many favorites. A favorite for Guy and me was a three part series on the Prodigal Son, the pastor portraying each character in today’s environment. It was very emotional.

We had dinner with Nancy Callender and Bob Horst one evening and the subject of favorite sermons came up. Without hesitation, Nancy asked Bob to summarize her favorite sermon. He remembered every detail. It went like this:

And when your body has become still, reach out with your heart.

Know that we are connected in ways that are terrifying and beautiful.

(You could hardly deny it now.)

Know that our lives are in one another’s hands.

(Surely, that has become clear.)

Do not reach out your hands.

Reach out your heart.

Reach out your words.

Reach out all the tendrils of compassion that move, invisibly, where we cannot touch.

Promise this world your lovefor better or for worse, in sickness and in health, so long as we all shall live.

The Sermon

There was a young boy who lived on a hill above a valley. Every morning, he would gaze across the valley with wonder at the house that had golden windows. He begged his mother to go there and, after months of insisting, she relented. He set off on the long journey and, after hours, arrived at his magical house. He rang the doorbell and a young girl about his age answered.

“I have come to see your golden windows that I have admired for as long as I can remember.”, he told her. She was taken aback and said, “There are no golden windows at my house but, it’s funny you ask because across the valley, every morning, I gaze at a house that has the golden windows you describe.”

So, what is the moral of the story and what sermons do you remember?

Memoirs and Musings News and Notes “ The Lake”

Summer for many Wisconsonites means “the lake.”

For each person and family this may have unique meanings. Throughout my lifetime “the lake” meant different things at different times and with different people. Early on it meant a rented family cottage beginning at Lake Denoon where I learned to swim. I can still see my toddler brother with the sun on his blond head playing for hours with a pail and water on the sandy beach. Lake Mount Morris near Wautoma brought water skiing skills. As a teenager we had a rented beach cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan near Sheboygan. Hours were spent walking on the beach along the shore with friends hoping to see boys and hoping they would notice us.

Occasionally we would try a swim in the icy Lake Michigan waters. During the middle years there were many visits with my brother and his family at their cottage on Lake Beulah as their kids were growing up.

Then there were the many years at Pewaukee Lake with a group of friends who rented a cottage on the lake for the whole summer. We were known as the Lakeside Ladies. Lots of sun; lying on the pier for hours covered in baby oil to get a tan; swimming, sailing, beer, volleyball, endless barbecues; friends from the city coming and going. It was great fun and it seemed like it would never end. The later years, in retirement, “the lake” means Lake Beulah and many lovely, leisurely pontoon boat rides on lazy summer afternoons. If we live in Wisconsin we all have our own lake stories and many, many memories of good times with family and friends.

Can Collecting and Crushing Can collecting and crushing have continued in the time of Covid-19 thanks to help from the maintenance crew. We appreciate all their help as residents have been limited as to what they can do in some areas, but have not been limited in their enjoyment of beverages from aluminum cans. Can collecting continues on Tuesday mornings by maintenance and then pull-tabs are removed and cans are sorted and readied for crushing. Many full boxes are ready to move to storage where they will wait until the price of aluminum goes up again.

We appreciate all the volunteers who have made this fund raising activity profitable over many years. Thanks to everyone who has contributed their aluminum cans to the project, too. Thanks for also rinsing the cans and pulling the tabs to save for the Ronald McDonald House. We are blessed to have this on-going project that has not closed down during this time of COVID-19!
