Campus Spotlight News and Notes Getting to Know Alicia Smitz

Getting to Know Nancy Schneider

Alicia Smitz has been part of the Tudor Oaks staff for 9 years. She has worked in the Health Center and in the Memory Care area.

Alicia now works with Supportive Services for Independent Living and Assisted Living.

Meet Nancy Schneider, the new Director of Social Services in the Frances Henry Health Center. Nancy recently joined the Tudor Oaks staff so we asked her to share some information with us so we can get to know her.

Alicia grew up in West Union, Iowa with 10 brothers and sisters! She says, “On the positive side, we always had someone to play with but needed to be creative with bathroom and shower times. They were each assigned times for getting ready in the morning. Traveling was also interesting. They needed two vehicles to go anywhere as a family.

Outside of work Alicia loves cooking and baking.

Her favorite meal is making pot roast with potatoes and carrots. Alicia likes to get out doors with her family to swim and fish. She also loves to play card games like Pinochle and Euchre and read mysteries.

Alicia’s viewing preferences include action movies and reality TV. The person she would most like to meet is Colby Davidson from the show “Survivor,” because she says, “he seems interesting and kind.”

Alicia is most thankful for her family, which includes her husband John, who is a builder, her daughter Rachel, who lives in Madison now and is training to do ultrasounds, and her son Jacob, who lives in Carmel, IN and works in Human Resources.

“I would love to go to Alaska and have a plan to go with my daughter in two years when she is done with school” states Alicia. She can’t wait to see the glaciers and the Northern Lights.

Nancy grew up in Mequon where she attended Homestead High School. After high school she studied social work at UW-Madison. Nancy currently resides in Milwaukee with her cat Mazie. Nancy has many hobbies including flower gardening, reading, home decorating, scrapbooking, coloring, the Green Bay Packers and spending time with her family.

Family is what Nancy says she is most thankful for.

She has two brothers, one sister, five nephews, one niece and one great niece who is seven months old and reportedly, “a cutie pie!”

Nancy says she would most like to meet best-selling author and lecturer, Brene’ Brown. Perhaps Nancy will be reading one of Ms. Brown’s books on a beach one day if she ever takes her dream vacation to Hawaii.

If you see Nancy in the hallway join us in welcoming her to the Tudor Oaks family.

Around the Neighborhood Meet Norma Mann Some people just know how to enjoy life! That aptly describes Norma Mann, a resident of Windsor House at Tudor Oaks. Norma is of the philosophy that each day is what you make of it. She has always chosen to make her days pleasant, even now in this time of isolating and social distancing. Norma says it helps to have good neighbors and to be able to stay in touch with her family.

Family is what brought Norma and her late husband, Perry, to Tudor Oaks in 2010. Norma has two daughters, Patty and Marty. Marty is a Muskego resident and wanted her mom and dad nearby so she suggested Tudor Oaks. Additionally, Norma enjoys her two grandsons, two greatgrandsons and a great-granddaughter. She says her family is close and will tell you that she always says it important to pray together and play together. That adage has served her well throughout her life.

Norma grew up in the Chicago area. After high school she went to business school and started a career as a secretary working in the insurance industry and eventually for the school district of Rolling Meadows, IL which is where Norma and Perry lived while raising their family. Norma and Perry’s relationship began with praying together and they never stopped playing together during their 71 years of marriage. They met at church and both sang in the church choir, although Norma will tell you Perry was definitely the better singer between the two of them. Norma loved to dance. They had great fun performing together for many years in variety shows through their church. Perry would sing and Norma would dance. She loves all forms of dance and has done it all including ballet, tap, toe, swing and square dancing.

Well into her 80’s Norma also took up clogging, which was taught by former Tudor Oaks employee, Dorothy Riesing. “Norma always amazed me”, says Dorothy. She continued to explain, “Norma would come to class, set her walker aside, dance for an hour and then pick up her walker again on the way out.”

Besides dancing, Norma is a devoted Cubs fan. She also enjoys the Brewers and watching Bucks basketball games. She used to sew, crotchet and raise butterflies, which she did as recently as last spring. She used to love riding bikes and really had fun riding with Perry on their bicycle built for two. Some of her fondest memories are of the travels they had in their motorhome. Norma says they traveled to every state. She jokes that they of course didn’t take the motorhome to get to Hawaii which was one of her favorite vacations. San Diego, CA was another favorite spot to visit.

When asked what else she might want people to know about her, she replies simply that she feels blessed everyday and that it was a blessing for her to move to Tudor Oaks. Staff and residents would agree that having Norma living here and sharing her positive attitude is a blessing for everyone at Tudor Oaks.

Resident Reflections A Covid Prayer Shared by Doreen Harbold The Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, Lutheran pastor and author offered this reflection recently.

I don’t know when we can get together again in worship, Lord.

So, for now I just ask that: When I sing along in my kitchen to each song on Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life Album, that it be counted as praise. (Happy 70th birthday SW!) And that when I read the news and my heart tightens in my chest, may it be counted as a Kyrie.

And that when my eyes brighten in a smile behind my mask as I thank the cashier may it be counted as passing the peace.

And that when I water my plants and wash my dishes and take a shower may it be counted as remembering my baptism.

And that when the tears come and my shoulders shake and my breathing falters, may it be counted as prayer.

And that when I stumble upon a Tabitha Brown video and hear her grace and love of you may it be counted as hearing a homily.

And that as I sit at that table in my apartment, and eat one more homemade meal slowly, joyfully, with nothing else demanding my time or attention, may it be counted as communion.

Hindsight

By Louise Osborn Everyday I hear someone say they can't wait for the virus to end, they can't wait until the flowers bloom next year, they can't wait until fall, can't wait for the election to be over, can't wait until the year is finished. etc. etc. etc.

We lived in Minnesota, and the winters were long. Marlene was one of my closest friends, but complained constantly about how awful it was each day. Her children came down with colds constantly, she was shut in during storms, tired of shoveling, and just plain sick of it all. She could hardly wait until spring.

Finally spring came. Her family suffered an irreversible tragedy. For the rest of her life, Marlene would want that winter back again.

Because of this story, I have never wished for a future day. Enjoy today: the people we meet and talk with, the activities and programs that have been planned, the walks around the premises, our families and friends. There's so much to be thankful for.

We have each other.

We will also be collecting completed ballots in a specific area and then hand delivering the ballots back to City Hall to ensure arrival.
