Help Wanted: Your library team is seeking a creative resident with a computer to serve as a back-up to our computer QB, Bev Hansen. Bev prepares checkout and file cards as well as pocket labels for all newly processed books. This takes place only three or four times a year.

The back-up team member would take on this role in place of Bev only if needed. Bev will provide the “how's” and “what's” involved. If you have a computer, please consider sharing this role when needed.

Last Spring, we introduced Karrie Kay, our Occupational Therapy Assistant. She has been working primarily in the Health Center and with many of our Assisted Living folks, helping them with upper extremity strength, range of motion and pain reduction. She has already helped many long and short term care residents with improvement in their activities of daily life, bathing, dressing, positioning to facilitate the greatest independence with the least pain. Resident Highlight

Laurie Halvorsen Halvorsen Laurie Halvorsen was born in Milwaukee, WI and was adopted into a loving home at the age of 3 months.

Her father worked for the City of Milwaukee for the downtown police garage for 35 years as a supervisor while her mother was an amateur artist. Laurie has her mother’s paintings hung all over her apartment.

She began piano lessons at the age of 7 and violin at age 12. She also plays recorder and organ, and sings.

taught music in the Racine Unified Public School District, teaching Pre-K to fifth grade general music and leading vocal choirs until 2008.

With her love for music, Laurie wanted to make it a career, but she was told this was not an option, so she went to Alverno College for nursing. After one year she decided that it wasn’t for her. Instead, she began to work as a medical assistant with an internist, which she continued for 15 years. During this time she was nurturing her musical talent at her church, the First United Methodist Church in West Allis. Laurie became their Assistant Music Director, leading children’s bell choirs and singing choirs.

She continues to work part-time at the church as a Visitation Minister since 2013 and as Senior Ministries Coordinator since 2015.

After a simple surgery, Laurie had a reaction to the anesthesia which left her paralyzed.

After going through rehabilitation she was able to return to work but kept having paralysis on her left side on and off. She spent over 15 years of frustration, in and out of hospitals, visiting doctors, neurologists, and combing the internet for any answers to her mysterious illness.

It was at the church that she realized she could make She finally found out in 1998 that she has a very rare a career of music, so in 1989 she quit her job to atneuromuscular disorder. tend Carroll University, acquiring her Bachelor of Music Education in 1993. She was the first person to Laurie loves to travel and has made trips to Europe, graduate with an organ major and a voice minor. Every time she turned around she would see the most amazing wildlife including whales and moose.

Her next adventure will be to Nova Scotia, Canada.

She often travels with her college roommate Lisa.

Laurie puts effort into retaining her muscles; she loves to use the pool here at Tudor Oaks. She stays very involved in the Tudor Oaks community. She led the men’s choir prior to Covid-19. She now enjoys the Activities Committee, playing in the Chimers Choir, and playing piano for Wednesday Chapel. She is currently the representative for the first floor of Cedar wing, but in May she will become the 2022 resident council president. Congratulations!
