Celebrating A Milestone Earlier this year the 200th resident moved to Trail Ridge Senior Living Community marking a new milestone. The Trail Ridge campus is now made up of 174 total apartments: 112 independent living, 40 new assisted living apartments and 22 new memory care apartments.

Trail Ridge & ABHM expand memory care in response to

A GROWING DEMAND As people live longer, healthier lives, their needs for healthcare and wellness services change.

Studies have shown that the older a person gets, the greater their risk for developing memory issues such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The reality is that one in eight people age 65+ has Alzheimer’s disease and almost half of seniors 85 and older have been diagnosed with some degree of memory impairment. As the population of seniors increases dramatically every year, so does the demand for memory care services. Senior living communities all over the country are creating new memory care

facilities to keep up with demand.

Here at Trail Ridge, part of American Baptist Homes of the Midwest (ABHM), we’ve developed our own memory care center and offer 22 private memory care suites. In fact, four of our fellow ABHM communities have opened new memory care centers within the last 18 months.

In Wheat Ridge, CO, our Mountain Vista community recently unveiled a brand new building dedicated exclusively for assisted living memory care, with 22 private memory care suites

and an expanded program of support services. Nearby, in downtown Denver, The Community at Franklin Park converted the top floor into a comprehensive memory care center. Tudor Oaks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin offers a comprehensive memory care programs and in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Thorne Crest has undergone a similar expansion and offers a new memory care centers and services.

At Trail Ridge our memory care center provides a safe and comforting environment for residents living with concerns related to memory loss. Our specially trained staff develop personalized care plans and activity programs to meet the unique needs of each resident, giving families peace of mind knowing your loved one in safe and comfortable.

The Trail Ridge and ABHM memory care philosophy is based on our commitment to care for the whole person while addressing each of the six dimensions of wellness. Families can be assured their loved one is safe and living to their greatest potential as a resident of the Trail Ridge memory care center.

The Six Dimensions of Wellness in Action Whole person wellness is one of the core principles of Trail Ridge and ABHM’s mission, “to create healthy Christian communities that empower older adults. We provide choices for housing, services, and technology that enrich body, mind, and spirit.”

One way our mission is carried out is through the Six Dimensional Model of wellness developed by the National Institute of Wellness. The categories of social, vocational, spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional wellness help guide many of the decisions we make regarding the services, opportunities, and atmosphere that enable our residents to reach their optimal state of wellness.

At Trail Ridge, we actively renew our commitment to wellness with programs and activities designed to promote the six dimensions throughout daily life.

Social

Trail Ridge encourages residents to stay socially connected both in and out of the community. A family-friendly campus makes it easy to maintain family bonds, while community events such as holiday parties and day trips foster strong social ties amongst residents in the community.

Vocational

Personal fulfillment can be found by continuing to engage in learning, work, and volunteering throughout one’s lifetime. Trail

Spiritual

In 2011, ABHM set out to cultivate a more robust Spiritual Services program for residents.

All ABHM communities adopted the Association of Professional Chaplains’ Standards of Practice for Professional Chaplains in Long-Term Care, which gave us a template for establishing consistent programs in each community. Today, ABHM has chaplains at every community, and we continue to expand and improve our spiritual programs.

Physical

ABHM V.P. of Quality and Program Development Tim O’Brien states, “Being physically active gives us independence, confidence, and allows us to do the things we enjoy.” To help residents feel their best, ABHM encourages residents to remain as active and physically fit as possible and offers wellness activities in every community.

Why is Wellness Important?

At Trail Ridge our comprehensive Wellness program enable residents to engage in all aspect of wellness. As many people know, a holistic wellness lifestyle is good for your overall health. According to the International Council on Active Aging, “78% of mature adults know the benefits of exercising. However, only 40% participate nationwide.”

Why is this? Common stereotypic attitudes about aging emerge as a result of widely held false beliefs about the aging process.

Several of the misleading beliefs about aging are: • Aging affects everyone in the same way. The reality is that people age differently and at different rates.

• Aging cannot be altered or reversed. Today, we can slow down, prevent, postpone, or even reverse biomarkers of aging.

• People peak early in life then begin to decline. In point of fact, middle and later adulthood are prime times for developing potential.

At Trail Ridge we understand the realities of the aging process and have adopted a philosophy of bringing wellness to residents where they live, our community.

With the reduction of household responsibilities and having your wellness resources under one roof, we eliminate two of the biggest reasons people of all ages don’t stay active and fit: time and inconvenience. The inclusion of wellness and fitness activities in your life is critical to your quality of life as you age.

Just as Trail Ridge has embraced this philosophy, so have the residents, with 55% consistently active in Wellness Programs. Trail Ridge offers over 30 classes per

week that focus on the skills, muscles and activities essential to an active lifestyle, concentrating on improving balance, gait, flexibility, strength, and posture. If classes are not quite your speed, we also offer self-directed and individualized programming options. Our equipment, exercise selection, and exercise progressions are specialized for the aging adult. Remaining physically active is just one facet of the program but is key to engaging in the aspects of a holistic wellness lifestyle.

Campus Beautification Project

Help Make Trail Ridge’s New Landscaping Plan A Reality Over the past year the new Trial Ridge vision became a reality, and it is our desire to see that vision expanded to include the grounds surrounding the community through the Trail Ridge Campus Beautification Project.

The project will significantly improve and enrich the landscaping around the community. The $120,000 project includes extensive landscaping renovations around the new buildings, along the main driveway entrance, parking areas and restoring the landscaping throughout the campus.
