Staff Selections Wente Vineyards Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon, California, California Of the hundreds of red wines available to us today, I still come back to California Cabernet Sauvignon for its robust flavors and dynamic character. Nothing beats it when paired with roasted or grilled beef cuts. 2023 marks the 140th anniversary of Wente Vineyards in the Livermore Valley of Bill McCleary California. Still family owned and certified sustainable, these folks have been winemakers for a long time. I like their affordable and drinkable wines.

This Southern Hills Cabernet is a delicious example of wine well-made. It showcases a spectrum of blackberry, cassis, and cola, layered with toasty oak flavors of nutmeg and ginger. Aged for 12 months before release. Cabernet Sauvignon (81%) dominates the body and firmness of the wine. Composition is complete with smaller amounts of Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Syrah. It all adds up to a complex taste that is charming and mouth-watering! Karthäuserhof Dry Riesling “Bruno,” Mosel, Germany I can’t think of a more versatile pairing wine than a good, dry German Riesling. While we have several delicious examples of German drys (trockens) at Surdyk’s, I will be focusing this season on Bruno Dry Riesling by Karthäuserhof. One of the oldest wineries in the world, the Brian Krause Karthäuserhof vineyards are situated on the steep banks of the river Mosel. Their unique, thin neck label is a nod to the history of this winery, who traditionally chilled the bottles in the river before serving; the distinctive placement meant it didn’t wash off! Slate heavy soils add an intriguing minerality, but complex layers of fruit are also prominent. The dueling fruit and mineral tie together with a mouth-watering acidity that dances across the tongue. A gorgeous wine for all occasions. This wine will pair with virtually any cuisine: steaks and seafood, plant-based proteins, Asian or Middle Eastern. Willamette Valley, Oregon I love Pinot Noir. For me, it’s one of the world’s most seductive wines. But it’s a finicky grape to grow, and as a result it often fetches a high price. Finding a Pinot that’s not just varietally correct but sensuously appealing for under $20 can be a challenge. That’s why I’m so fond of the David Mahoney Montinore Estate Red Cap Pinot Noir. Made from grapes grown biodynamically in the Tualatin Hills and Yamhill Carlton AVAs of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the wine is aged for ten months in mostly neutral barrels, with just enough new oak to add a touch of sweet spice. It exudes lovely cherry and raspberry aromas, underscored with just a hint of earthiness. On the palate, it’s bright with generous acidity, with flavors shading more towards cranberry and pomegranate. That mouthwatering acidity makes it a fantastic companion to a wide range of favorite holiday foods, from turkey on Thanksgiving to salmon on New Year’s Eve. (120177)

Thomas Goss Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia When I first joined the wine industry in 2000, Australian wines were all the rage, with wines of many different styles that reflected the diverse growing conditions found in a continent the size of the United States. Australia’s vineyard farmers planted too many acres of vines and experienced multiple bumper crops in successive vintages, which led to Drew Fuller a glut of unsold wine. The focus on cheap bulk wine with colorfully labeled bottles proved to be a disaster for their reputation and profitability, and led to plummeting sales. The good news is that Australia still makes beautiful wines that are varied in style and location, and I recently tasted Thomas Goss Shiraz from McLaren Vale in South Australia and felt compelled to share this gem with our Surdyk’s customers. Thomas Goss emigrated to South Australia from England in 1849 and became a notable land holder and farmer. The winery and vineyards are certified sustainable, vegan friendly, and the winemaker Alexia Roberts is one of the leading female winemakers in Australia. The wine is rich in flavors of dark red and blue fruits, chocolate, anise, and warm baking spices with notes of vanilla. The impression is initially rich and bold, yet remains bright, lively, and focused without any heaviness. Medium to full bodied mouthfeel with silky tannins and a long persistent finish that will pair wonderfully with beef, lamb, and venison. The holidays are my favorite time of year for several reasons, but mainly because they provide the ultimate excuse for elaborate meal planning. And while my family usually caps off Christmas dinner of Beef Wellington with a good bottle of red, I find most of my holiday recipes pair Noelle Starr best with white wine. Cheese boards, charcuterie, quiches, creamy dips, chilled seafood platters, roasted oysters, as well as most fish or various holiday preparations of white meat will pair brilliantly with Muscadet, the crisp white from the Loire Valley. Sustainably farmed by the now 9th generation of family winemakers, this is mineral-driven with white fruit and floral notes. It is more delicate than the grapefruit-forward or grassy Sauvignon Blancs that I love in warmer weather.

Domaine Trimbach Pinot Noir Reserve, Alsace, France If you’ve been in the store recently, I’ve probably talked to you about going back to wine school to learn more about French wine. The first region we covered was Alsace, so it just made sense for me to start with a bottle from Trimbach, as they have been producing amazing Alsatian Keri Brown wines for three centuries across thirteen generations. The family oversees each operation, from planting to harvest, from vinification to bottling. The tradition, dedication, and vigilance are obvious in this bottle.

Speaking of the bottle, there’s a bit of dorky history there. The fancy flute-shaped bottle is now required in the Alsace AOC, even though it started as a matter of economics and transportation. The early transport of these wines was much more smooth and forgiving in comparison to the sea transport of the Bordeaux and Burgundy wines. It is said that the slender bottle shape was best for stacking bottles in crates to be transported in small hulls of the river boats. About the wine (finally!): it starts with a delicate nose of red and black berries. The wine is not aged in barrels to preserve its fruitiness and finesse and really brings the cherry flavors and classic old-world earthiness on the palate. The tannins are smooth, silky, and refined. This is a fantastic choice for the holidays, either as a gift for someone (or yourself), or on your holiday table. (117547) Reg. $33.99

Domaine de la Prébende “Anna Asmaquer” Beaujolais, Alsace, France It’s easy in wine to focus on wineries you like, whether it’s the label or the way they make their wine, because it’s a reliable comfort. The next level of that is following winemakers, since they often have multiple projects. In the Peter Plaehn case of the Dupeuble family, they make multiple wines at their winery. I discovered the Dupeuble Beaujolais last year, imported by the iconic Kermit Lynch. I’d love to say I knew they also made Domaine de la Prébende, a perennial favorite of mine, but I didn’t. I should have known since they both come from Kermit, but the two wines are sold by two different distributors and neither mentioned the other, if they were even aware. In any case, a happy connection.

“Prébende” basically means “tax,” and the domaine is located where the monks used to collect taxes from the villagers; only the best locations for the monks, it seems! Soils here are mostly clay and limestone, a unique feature in a region dominated by granite. Vines are very old and harvested by hand, with native yeasts for fermentation using the traditional whole-cluster semi-carbonic practices. This is easily one of the best valuepriced Beaujolais around, with wild bramble, crunchy cranberry, and pomegranate notes laced with fresh herbs. A perfect holiday wine with cranberry sauce, or as a vibrant alternative to heavy reds when the temperatures dip. (120595) Reg. $19.99

Shaw + Smith Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills, Australia Balance is the word that comes to mind when I think of this gem of a Sauvignon Blanc from Adelaide Hills. It’s also how one could describe cousins Michael Hill Smith and Martin Shaw and their sustainable vineyards tucked away just inland from the Southern Australian coast. While New J’Kalein Madison Zealand Sauvignon Blancs still dominate, this emerging region is worth paying attention to. The altitude and cool ocean breezes in Adelaide Hills create the perfect equation for bright citrus aroma to fill the glass. Leading with notes of pink grapefruit, fresh green apple, and lemon/lime, this bottle takes you on a beautiful journey, balanced by a healthy dose of acidity for freshness and the subtle hint of herbaceous flavor we’ve all come to know and love with Sauvignon Blancs. This bottle changed my perception of the variety and is now a staple in my wine rack at home. While it’s easily a “solo-sipper,” this bottle has enough balance to pair with your favorite Mediterranean style meal or to serve as the perfect partner to the crudités platter at your next party! ¡Salud! Ardnamurchan Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky I owe my newfound love of Ardnamurchan to a Scottish friend and fellow spirits enthusiast, who poured me a wee dram after a recent dinner at his house. It immediately grabbed me by the nose, delighted my palate, and warmed my belly. For a David Mahoney distillery that has only been up and running for nine years, producing a single malt whiskey of this caliber is a phenomenal achievement.

And to do this in a remote location in the western Highlands using only local renewable energy sources makes the accomplishment even more impressive. Ardnamurchan uses equal parts peated and unpeated barley, giving it just enough smoky scent to be alluring but not overwhelming. Using the blockchain-enabled QR code, I learned that a bottle from a recent batch was composed mostly of six-year-old casks, about two-thirds exbourbon and a third ex-sherry, with a couple of older casks thrown into the mix. The whisky’s relative youthfulness didn’t detract at all from from the perfectly balanced array of flavors, with notes of nutmeg, flamed orange peel, and campfire smoke. In the spirit of paying my Scottish friend’s favor to me forward, I heartily encourage you, too, to discover the pleasures of this exciting new whisky. (117325) Reg. $69.99 Sale $59.49
