Bernardus Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands, CA This is a delicious Pinot Noir from a great winery in a great region. The Santa Lucia Highlands in western Monterey County is a cool climate growing area that provides an extended growing season… which happens to be ideal for Pinot Noir grapes. The team at Bernardus hand picks some of the best fruit from select small-farm, highland vineyards.

Bill McCleary Sorted and vinified in small batches, the Pinot is then aged in French oak barrels. The resulting wine has solid Pinot character. I like the rich plum aromas up front with signature spice notes of cedar wood, clove, and cola. The palate flavors are lively and fresh with Ania’s Cheese Pairing: black cherry and cranberry fruit expression. A royal garnet color pulls your attention to every sip. Hard to resist.

South Africa A sparkling wine of South Africa, and a demi-sec no less! I know it’s a little different than my usual recommendations, but believe me: you need to try this juice! Graham Beck produces sparkling wines in the Methode Cap (Cape) Classique (classic French method), a uniquely South African Brian Krause category. The Bliss Nectar is approximately 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, separately pressed, aged on the lees for 12 months before disgorgement, and then receiving a special dosage. The result is a delightful treat for the senses! The slightest touch of sweetness elevates this wellSam’s Cheese Pairing: crafted bubbly, creating a fun and playful wine, good for any day that ends in “y.” Enjoy by itself; this wine needs no companion! I was originally excited to talk about this wine because of the different (not French) dirt and the terroir in the EolaAmity Hills AVA. Then I started digging into the wine and the people behind it, and my focus shifted dramatically.

While the terroir is important as it adds quality and complexity, I’m fairly certain the winemaking legacy is the Keri Brown actual contributor to the beauty of this wine. As I occasionally do, I picked up this bottle because the label is really cute: the hand-in-hand thing is absolutely adorable. It turns out, the hand-in-hand represents a hand-in-hand collaboration between generations. “Et fille” translates to “and daughter,” and was co-founded by father and daughter winemakers. It’s now in its second generation with daughter Jessica Mozeico, who grew up watching her dad making wine in his garage as a hobby. Eventually, Jessica and her father made winemaking their focus, each giving up their corporate jobs, and ran the winery together until Howard died in 2017. Jessica says she learned everything about winemaking from her dad and is “inspired by her late father’s legacy and daughter’s future.” The love for her father and daughter is apparent in the glass. The wine is fermented entirely in stainless steel in small lots, allowing a pure fruit expression and the minerality to shine through. It’s the domestic version of a seriously tasty Chablis: clean and crisp with lemony nectarine. I loved this bottle before I knew the story. Now that I know the story, I love it even more, and plan to celebrate my own daughter’s 21st birthday with a bottle.

Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, CA The wine staff at Surdyk’s has been tasting and evaluating many new wines that you have probably noticed during your recent shopping trips, which range in style, price, and geographic locations. Even with many new items to choose from, I have recently had a craving for something Drew Fuller that I know well and have loved for many years: Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wetzel family has owned this property since 1962 and during the last decade, the third and fourth generations of Wetzels have joined the company. They are certified Sustainable by Sonoma County, which acknowledges their decades long commitment to using sustainable, environmentally sound practices in the vineyards and in the winery. My most recent tasting of Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon confirmed my love of this wine, which is classic medium to full bodied, gorgeous fruit flavors with round, yet structured tannins. The wine shows beautiful aromas of dark cassis, blackberry, subtle oak, and mocha. Flavors of dark fruit, earth, and hints of tobacco are framed by firm Dane’s Cheese Pairing: tannins that provide a long, memorable finish. The lush fruit of the Alexander Valley makes this wine a joy to drink now, but the firm tannins will reward those of you who buy a few bottles to lay down and enjoy in the future. Staff Selections Andre Brunel Grenache VdP Vaucluse, Rhone Valley, France If you are familiar with the Southern Rhone Valley, then you know that the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape are among some of the most collectable in the world. Eight generations strong, the Andre Brunel Estate is one of the most revered. And yes – their CdP wines are excellent, Noelle Starr collectable, and worthy of their price, but most certainly a special occasion wine. Fortunately for the more budget-minded among us, Andre Brunel also makes wine from vineyards just a bit to the north in the broader Vaucluse region. It is here that old Grenache vines grow in idyllic soil and climate conditions. The grapes are harvested, destemmed, and fermented in concrete, with the goal being balance and freshness. The care and control given to the Brunel estate wines are not lost on this humbly priced bottle. A chance to enjoy wine royalty at a very reasonable price.

Terras Gauda O Rosal Blend, Rias Baixas, Spain One of the first assumptions people make about being a sommelier, or being in the wine industry in general, is “you must get to travel all over the world!” Not nearly as much as you’d think (or I’d like), but there are still many more Peter Plaehn opportunities than most professions. You can go, visit wineries, and come back with cool pictures or, as I try to do, if possible, find a way to bring that region back to my team and the wine community at large. This was the case when I was invited to visit the region of Rias Baixas in northwest Spain. What most wine drinkers think of as a region that’s 99.9% Albariño quickly revealed itself to be anything but. I’d known of Bodegas Terras Gauda from studying the region, but once we were at the winery it was clear that while Albariño paid the bills, they are most passionate about the other varieties in the area and the traditional blend of the O Rosal subregion where they are located. Situated along the banks of the Minho River, which divides Spain from Portugal, blends of Albariño, Caiño Blanco and Loureiro are what differentiates O Rosal from the stingingly bright acidity of the Salnes subregion to the north and the more full-bodied wines of the Tea region upriver. This delicious blend was not available in Minnesota, but I asked one of our distributor partners to bring it in for us, and for you. Albariño contributes fruity Steph’s Cheese Pairing: aromas and volume, Caiño Blanco its tropical aromas and light balsamics, and Loureiro its floral intensity. The resulting flagship wine of Terras Gauda is rich, complex, and a perfect partner to seafood (pulpo!), creamy dishes, and Asian cuisine.

La Rioja Alta “Vina Alberdi” Reserva, Rioja, Spain I’ve decided to go back to wine school to complete my certification in Spanish wine. Spain was a region I quickly fell in love with when I first started studying, especially when it came to the Tempranillo grape. The power and boldness, sprinkled with a little spice, was everything I was J’Kalein Madison looking for in a glass of wine. So, you can only imagine my excitement when I came across this bottle from La Rioja Alta. Not only does it celebrate the rich history of Spanish winemaking, but it also reminds us why Spain is one of the leading exporters of wine in the world. From handpicked grapes to aging in American oak, detail and care has been taken to make this bottle an enjoyable experience.

Pronounced fresh red fruit hits your nose before the wine even touches the glass, making you want to just drink it straight from the bottle (…or maybe that’s just me!). Your first sip is packed with a beautiful blend of cinnamon spice, vanilla, and a hint of tobacco Rachel’s Cheese Pairing: before the effects of three years of oak aging (giving it the Reserva classification) take over, rounding out the flavors.

Smooth tannins and yummy hints of bright cherry and strawberry make this the perfect bottle for your next wine and cheese night, or if you just want to splurge for the evening.

Luigi Baudana “Dragon” Bianco, Langhe, Italy Italian wines never cease to surprise me. After all my years of exploring their intricacies, I am still discovering new appellations and new wine grapes. My latest discovery is Nascetta, a white wine grape native to the Langhe region of Piemonte in northwest Italy. It had almost entirely disappeared by the 1990s, when it was slowly and steadily David Mahoney brought back from the brink of extinction. Nascetta figures prominently in the Luigi Baudana Dragon white blend, along with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. Originally made by the Baudana family in its namesake hamlet of Baudana, where they also made highly regarded Barolos in their tiny cellar, it’s now under the stewardship of the illustrious Vajra family. While the Chardonnay brings depth and weight to the mix, the blend remains remarkably fresh, with lush tree fruit and floral aromas and flavors leading the way to a crisp mineral-y finish. This is an absolutely ideal wine for ushering in spring and the warmer months to come. (121085) Reg. $22.99
