ecently Maple Crest hosted a Ground Breaking Ceremony to announce the kick off of a major redevelopment project for this truly remarkable community.

Maple Crest employees celebrated the start of their $11 Million redevelopment project during the January 30 Ground-breaking Ceremony at the community

Currently Maple Crest is undergoing a massive transformation. The first phase of redevelopment began in January of this year, on the third floor of the community, where plans call for an entirely new rehabilitation area to better serve the Benson neighborhood and the seniors of Omaha.

In this first phase, which will be completed in the next month or two, Maple Crest will increase the number of private resident rooms as well as enlarged resident rooms. The beautifully appointed common areas and enhanced rehab services have brought a sense of excitement to those looking for health care options.

As we look ahead to the coming year you will see Maple Crest continue to change. Expanded and remodeled dining areas, redesigned resident rooms throughout the community, refurbished common spaces encourage ‘community’ and foster meaningful relationships with friends old and new.

When complete, our new

offer residents a friendly setting with approximately 19 newly designed private and semiprivate rooms. The new Transitional Care Center will cater to needs of those who require Physical, Occupational or Speech therapy after a hospital stay, yet still have easy access to other areas of the community.

Alter-G

The new AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill is now in use at Maple Crest Care Center to help seniors recover from surgery, rehabilitate after an injury, or for other medical conditions.

Exercise is the key to maintaining wellness and optimizing recovery for older adults.

Clinically proven to reduce pain and impact on joints, the AlterG gives Maple Crest residents the opportunity to exercise in a fall-safe, comfortable environment in spite of other medical conditions.

By allowing for exercise when it would otherwise be impossible, Maple Crest residents using the AlterG are regaining mobility and maintaining health, thereby allowing them to stay as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

The first time residents try the AlterG, they won’t believe how comfortable and how much fun it is to exercise at a lower body weight. The AlterG can be used in a variety of ways and provides a broad range of benefits for seniors.

Maple Crest Keeps Residents Safe from Norovirus

ebraska Department of Health Services is warning the Norovirus is back. The potentially serious illness has been reported in nursing homes statewide over the past few months. Maple Crest Care Center, however, hasn’t seen any cases of Norovirus. Nurses credit proper immunizations and cleanliness as key factors in keeping residents safe.

For nurse and infectious disease specialist, Sandra Morse, RN., quality control is about more than making residents of Maple Crest comfortable, it’s about keeping them safe from diseases that can spread quickly.

Morse says about 95% of Maple Crest’s staff got immunized for the flu back in October. “It was very exciting for me as an infection control preventionist that out of those 169 employees, all came forward

and wanted the flu shot.”

Morse acknowledges that the Norovirus is highly contagious and can be easily spread. She recommends wiping down surfaces from elevator buttons to the spigot you use at the watercooler with a cleaning solution, preferably one that contains bleach.

Proper hand washing is also something Morse says can’t be overestimated. “I’m just really vigilant about having staff wash for 25 seconds,” said Morse, who also says hand sanitizers are a great way to disinfect on the run.

And if you are sick, Morse says you can do a lot of good simply by staying home especially if you were planning a visit to a long-term care community. She recommends getting healthy before paying a visit.

Alzheimer’s Association Names Maple Crest Top Care Facility

Maple Crest recently received a Top Care Facility Award from the Alzheimer’s Association.

This award was given to the skilled care community that raised the most money for the cause in 2013. On December 18th Maple Crest Care Center was presented the award at Alzheimer’s ceremony luncheon. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the

nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care support and research. Even though the 2013 walk season is officially over, Maple Crest is still raising monies for the cause through the year. “We are very excited and proud to participate in the event Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” says Marketing Director Barbara Reyes.

In 1987 Staci Wheatley started her career in Seattle, Washington as acute care LPN. Shortly afterward, in 1989, she moved to a different area of health care, longterm care. For the next 21 years Staci’s career covered a number of areas, restorative nursing, case management and unit management, always however with the focus on Rehabilitation. Prior moving back to Nebraska in 2011 Staci held several positions before she was able to return to her calling in rehabilitation. According to Staci, Maple Crest's Wellness program enhances quality of life by increasing a resident’s ability to

perform the Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) through improving balance and strength. Maple Crest uses the team approach when creating individual wellness programs for residents and receives input from other departments within the Staci Wheatley community. Staci states that she is Wellness Director glad to be a part of the Maple Crest team and able to have a positive impact on the lives of residents.

Maple Crest Introduces New Dining Services Director

Maple Crest is proud to introduce our new Dining Services Director, Margaret Hodge. Margaret is a graduate of Colorado State University and holds degree in Food Science and Nutrition and is a Registered Dietitian. After finishing her degree Margaret completed her dietetic internship at Presbyterian Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Margaret’s career led her into food service management in long-term care, where she has stayed for nearly 25 years. During that time she has had the good fortune to move around

the country living in Arkansas, Colorado, North Carolina, Minnesota, and eventually here in Nebraska. Margaret is looking forward to the challenges of her new position at Maple Crest and plans to enhance the dining services program.
