A

merican Baptist Homes of the Midwest (ABHM) is a non-profit organization with more than 90 years of service to seniors and those in need. At ABHM, we are committed to our mission of service to others by providing housing and health care to residents in our senior living communities, health centers, group homes for developmentally disable and HUD housing locations.

An ABHM board member has the unique opportunity to participate at the highest level of the organization and share their knowledge and insight to help guide the future of ABHM. ABHM communities are located throughout the Midwest and provide a variety of services that include: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing/Health Centers, Memory Care, Rehabilitation Therapy, Group Homes for Developmentally Disabled and HUD Housing. Our approximately 1,300 employees serve over 1,250 people on a daily basis. The work we do is very rewarding and residents are proud to call our communities home.

The Early Origins of ABHM n 1930, a small group of Baptist gentlemen living in Minnesota and Iowa recognized the serious need to provide shelter and care for the elderly population of the Midwest.

These five gentlemen decided to take action and formed a not-for-profit organization they called the Northwest Baptist Home Society. The original mission of the Northwest Baptist Home Society was “to provide Christian homes for aged and dependent men and women, and to provide for their physical and spiritual comfort.”

The five founders did not wait long to involve others in their efforts to relieve the suffering they saw in their communities. To expand their initiative, they joined with the Northern Baptist Convention of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Baptist congregations in these states helped to support the Society’s early efforts.

The first ABHM community opened its doors on August 29, 1931. It was housed in a former men’s dormitory belonging to Parker College (a now-defunct Baptist school) in Winnebago, MN, that had sat vacant for many years before being given to the Society and converted into a residence for seniors. The community was originally named the “Winnebago Old People’s Home” and later renamed Parker Oaks Retirement Community.

In the following 18 years, the Society’s mission and footprint grew as they opened seven additional “Old People’s Homes” in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Meanwhile, another Baptist association for the elderly was growing in Colorado, called the Baptist Home Association of the Rocky Mountains, (BHA).

ABHM’s first location in Winnebago, MN, the Winnebago Old People’s Home, was originally a dormitory at now-defunct Parker College. The community was later renamed Parker Oaks Retirement Community.

to provide “facilities for care, comfort, health, recreation, and general welfare of aged people.” In 1994, the two organizations joined forces to continue a joint mission to serve those in need under the ABHM banner.

The ABHM mission has evolved over time, but remains true to the original values of our founders. Jeff Hongslo, ABHM President and CEO states, “Our mission today is to create healthy Christian communities that empower older adults, families, and people with disabilities. We provide choices for housing, services, and technology that enrich body, mind, and spirit.”

In the past several years, ABHM has expanded the services offered at a number of locations across the Midwest. Our communities provide a full continuum of senior living and healthcare services that include skilled nursing, rehab care, assisted living, independent living, and memory care, along with housing and programs for the developmentally disabled and subsidized housing for seniors and families. Our communities are located in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

ECSLC is a continuing care retirement community located in the rural southwest corner of Iowa, 40 miles from Omaha, Nebraska.

The four acre campus currently includes 32 independent apartments, 31 assisted living units, and 71 skilled care beds (including a 16 bed memory care unit). ABHM acquired this facility in 1972. In 1976 there were extensive renovations that included the addition of 60 nursing beds, and 22 independent living apartments were constructed in 1983. ABHM also renovated much of the original structure to create a more efficient and cost effective administrative wing and added 32 assisted living apartments, 16 special care (Alzheimer’s / dementia care) units, eight independent living apartments, and a meeting / dining area for use by the community-at-large. Additional remodeling of the skilled care area was completed in 2015. The nursing facility is certified by Medicare and Medicaid and also accepts managed care, insurance and private pay residents. Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are available to all residents.

he Health Center at Franklin Park (“HCFP”) is located at 1535 Park Avenue, Denver, Colorado. HCFP is a four story building located in the historic Capitol Hill Neighborhood near downtown Denver. For the past decade there has been a gentrification / renaissance of the Capitol Hill area. Many of the original homes and businesses built in the late 1800’s have been preserved and renovated. In addition, there is a great deal of new housing and business development within a one mile radius of HCFP.

HCFP offers 86 skilled nursing beds, including a 21 bed memory care unit that was opened in 2015 after renovation of the 4th floor and updating of furnishing and finishes in other areas of the building. The facility is certified by Medicare and Medicaid and also accepts managed care, VA, insurance and private pay residents. Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are available to all residents.

aple Crest Health Center (“MCHC” or “Maple Crest”) is located at 2824 North 66th Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska. MCHC is on the north side of Omaha, Nebraska’s Benson Neighborhood. MCHC was acquired by the ABHM in 1958. Two additions were completed in the 1960s and another addition and replacement of the original facility was completed in 1976.

A renovation and repositioning of the entire facility was completed in 2017, and Maple Crest currently operates 160 skilled care beds that include a 19 bed transitional car unit and a 38 bed memory care unit.

There are numerous lounge areas for residents and family members, beauty / barber shop, four large dining rooms, physical, occupational, and speech therapies, transportation services, and planned activities.

Maple Crest is certified for Medicare and Medicaid residents and also accepts managed care, private insurance, and private pay residents.

Physical, occupational, and speech therapies are available to all residents.

ountain Vista Senior Living Community (“MVSLC” or “Mountain Vista”) is located at 4800 Tabor Street, Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Wheat Ridge is a northwest suburb of Denver. The campus is situated on fifteen acres just north of Interstate Highway 70. MVSLC offers a continuum of services consisting of 159 skilled nursing beds (including 24 memory care beds and a 16 bed transitional care unit), 47 assisted living and 22 memory care assisted living apartments, and 47 independent living “cottage homes.” The health center and assisted living apartments are located on a plateau with a view of the Rocky Mountains to the west. The Mt. Vista Health Center (skilled care) is a one story structure constructed in 1963 with major renovations in 1994. In 2014 a wing of the health center was completely renovated to create the transitional care unit.

Mountain Vista Assisted Living is a two story building built in 1999, and the memory care assisted living building was constructed in 2014. The health center and assisted living buildings have many large lounge areas, beauty / barber shop, dining rooms, and activity areas. The grounds are well maintained and have large patio areas for the residents, including enclosed outdoor areas for memory care residents. Mountain Vista is certified for Medicare and Medicaid residents and also accepts managed care, private insurance, and private pay residents. rail Ridge Senior Living Community (“TRSLC” or “Trail Ridge”) is located at 3408 West Ralph Rogers Road, in the southwest quadrant of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. TRSLC is situated next to Interstate Highway 229 on an eighteen (18) acre campus. The area has a suburban feel to it as the area is rapidly expanding and growing.

TRSLC offers independent living, assisted living and memory care services.

The original campus was constructed in 1995 and an addition completed in 1998. Renovation and repositioning of the entire campus was completed in 2015, including addition of a wellness center with pool, theater and fitness center; construction of a new 40 unit assisted living addition; renovation and remodeling of the existing assisted living wing to add a new memory support service line with 22 apartments; and renovation and remodeling of all independent living common areas and support service areas. The post-construction campus consists of 112 residential apartments (includes services provided under assisted living program), 40 assisted living apartments and 22 memory support assisted living apartments.

Common areas include two elegant dining rooms, library, beauty / barber shop, a bistro, a Great Hall, and several lounge areas.

Muskego is a southwest suburb of Milwaukee. TOSLC is a continuing care community located on 110 acres of rolling fields and woodland. Tudor Oaks was built in 1975 and acquired by ABHM in 1982.

The campus consists of 61 skilled care beds, 43 assisted living units, 22 assisted living memory care, and 118 independent residential units. Renovation and repositioning of the entire campus was completed in 2016 including the addition of a wellness center with pool, theater, fitness center, numerous outdoor amenities and gardens. Each area of the CCRC currently offers many lounge and gathering places, as well as large dining areas, a library, and greenhouse. Wellness programs and transportation services are also available for the residents. In addition, the expansive property has a putting green, walking paths, gardens, and access to swimming and boating on Lake Brittany which is adjacent to the property. The nursing care unit is certified for Medicare and Medicaid and accepts managed care, insurance and private pay residents.

Crest Services • Group Living • Independent Living Programs rest Services provides in-home care and independent living programs to individuals with mental or developmental disabilities or those with traumatic brain injuries. Services are provided to Members in small group homes for two to four individuals typically a modestly sized home located in a residential neighborhood. Started in 1974, Crest Services has offices in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and in the Iowa cities of Des Moines, Harlan, Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids and Chariton.

Home Care Service Tudor Oaks Home Care udor Oaks Home Care offers a variety of supportive home care services to those who wish to remain independent in their own home.

Today many seniors want to live in a familiar and comfortable setting which is most often their own home. However, due to a change in health or mobility some seniors find they need a little extra support around the house to stay independent, healthy and safe. Our Home Care services provide this care.

• Government Subsidized Affordable Housing BHM manages six HUD Housing buildings all located in Wisconsin. Four located in the Milwaukee area and two in the Madison. HUD provides a housing option where the occupant pays no more than 30 percent of gross income for housing costs, including utilities.

• Native American Children's Home ocated in Muskogee, OK, Murrow provides a safe, nurturing environment, spiritual foundation and cultural experience to Native American Children in crisis.

Jeff joined ABHM in November 2003 and was subsequently appointed Chief Financial Officer in 2006. Most recently, he was appointed President/CEO in September 2018. Jeff has dedicated his career to senior living with more than 30 years of experience. Jeff has three grown kids and lives just west of the Twin Cities.

In 2001, Andrea joined ABHM with years of experience in human resources, benefits, payroll and reporting. Since 2010, she has served as Vice President of Human Resources.

Whenever possible and weather permitting Andrea and family can be found at their cabin located in Northern Minnesota.

Prior to 2015, Melissa was an auditor at a public accounting firm focused on nonprofits and healthcare entities. Melissa initially joined ABHM as the Controller, and in 2018 was promoted to CFO. Melissa enjoys visiting new places and has been to over 20 countries, including Iceland and Andorra. She and her family live west of Minneapolis and are big Packer fans.

Throughout her 20 year career at ABHM, Shanna has served in a variety of roles from Community Administrator to her current position as COO. Shanna is a great cook and often spoils co-workers with her desserts. Shanna likes to travel and lives with her family south of Minneapolis.

Kraig started with ABHM in 2016 and shortly afterward became an IT Systems Administrator. Kraig is an avid video game fan and enjoys fantasy, science fiction and is a regular at the annual Renaissance Festival. He and his family live west of the Twin Cities.

Jim was hired in September 2021 and brings over 30 years of experience to ABHM. In the past several years, Jim moved from Philadelphia to Minneapolis to be closer to family. He and his wife like hiking, live music and science fiction movies.

After ten years in the Creative Services department of the Minneapolis StarTribune newspaper–followed by several years as a freelance designer– Dave joined ABHM in 2013. Dave is an avid sports fan who closely follows the Vikings and the Wild. He and his wife Pam enjoy hiking and biking.

Sharayah spent six years in public accounting before coming to ABHM as the Controller in 2020. She resides in South Minneapolis where she enjoys trying out new restaurants and local breweries. Sharayah will be the first to acknowledge that her name is rather unique– it comes from a song by Amy Grant called “Sharayah.”

Kelsey started as a college intern at Tudor Oaks Senior Living Community in 2017. Since that time she has held a number of different position within the organization. She is a proud Wisconsin resident and mom of two beautiful kids.

Deb joined ABHM in the fall of 2021 and brings more than 20 years of senior care experience to the clinical team.

Deb has three adult daughters and lives in Red Wing, Minnesota, with her husband. She has a great interest in college sports especially the Wisconsin Badgers.

In March, 2022 Julia joined ABHM Accounting Department as an AP Specialist. Julia lives just west of the Twin Cities in Minnetonka, MN. For fun she enjoys action and comedy movies, traveling, camping or just enjoying the outdoors.

In 2012, Chris began with ABHM as the Business Office Manager at Maple Crest Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. For the past six years Chris has supported the business office activity for all ABHM communities from her home in Papillion, Nebraska. Chris enjoys attending her kids’ sporting events and traveling.

New to ABHM in January 2022, Shelley’s primary focus is educating staff on software programs and streamlining clinical processes. She and her husband live in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where they like to camp during the summer with Ozzy, their grandson.

Mary started with ABHM in 2018 and has over 20 years of payroll and timekeeping experience. Mary was born and raised in Minnesota and recently moved to Tennessee to enjoy the warm weather. She loves taking road trips and finding new breweries and wineries on the way.

Molly has been with ABHM since April 2020. During her free time, Molly enjoys the creativity of crafting and has a special interest in scrapbooking. She also likes spending time with her husband and two teenage kids.

Chris was a Payroll Manager for a Minnesota school district for 25 years before joining ABHM in 2018. She enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and cheering on the Minnesota Gopher volleyball team and the Minnesota Wild.

She recently moved to Dayton, Minnesota, to be near her family.

Gary has been with ABHM for more than 20 years and in IT for over 30 years. He enjoys serving seniors and has developed many valuable relationships at ABHM. Gary lives in western Minnesota where he enjoys country living, time with family and traveling.

Jennifer started with ABHM in Human Resources at Trail Ridge Senior Living Community in South Dakota. Today she supports all ABHM communities as the primary resource for recruiting and employee experience. As a selfproclaimed “gamer,” she can be found playing tabletop games, gaming online or waging epic battles in Dungeons and Dragons.

Cheryl joined ABHM in 2022, bringing over twenty years of experience working in Finance and Accounts Payable. During the summer months she enjoys spending time with family and her two dogs traveling the Midwest in their motorhome.

Diana joined the ABHM Team in 2010.

Diana’s experience in Human Resources includes work in not-for-profit and private industries. She is originally from Tennessee and enjoys traveling, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Tommy Tyler Director of Marketing Tommy started as Marketing Director for an ABHM community in Minneapolis over 17 years ago before moving to the home office. He is a science fiction fan and lives Shakopee, Minnesota, just south of the Home Office location in Eden Prairie.

Harold W. Kleinpaste Nursing Scholarship Fund The Harold W. Kleinpaste Nursing Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to current ABHM employees in their pursuit of a nursing education. The Scholarship fund is a fitting legacy to Harold W. Kleinpaste and his wish to see others continue their education.

Campus Development Fund In a continuing effort to provide the latest in senior housing ABHM has established the Campus Development Fund. The goal of the fund is to provide financial resources for projects that have an immediate and lasting impact on the residents’ quality of life.

Over the past five years donors have generously given over two million dollars to enhance ABHM Communities.

Memorial Donations Celebrate the life of a loved one through a memorial donation or special occasion tribute. Your support, in memory of a loved one, enables ABHM to continually enhance our communities and positively impact the lives of current and future residents.

Mission Legacy Fund The ABHM Mission, “to create healthy Christian communities that empower older adults and provide choices for housing, services and technology that enrich body, mind and spirit,” reflects the spirit of our founders. Donations to the Mission Legacy Fund secures the future of our organization as we continue to empower older adults by providing choices to meet their housing and healthcare needs.

Planned Giving– Gifts From Wills or Estates Planned gifts have the power to transform lives and impact entire communities. A significant gift made through a bequest, will or living trust, ensures your legacy will live on and your wishes will be met. ABHM offers a number of strategies to help you meet your goals.

Transformational, or Planned Gifts to ABHM have supported the development of the Francis Henry Health Center in Muskego, WI, the Sondergard Memory Care Center in Harlan, IA and the Gangwish Chapel in Omaha NE.
