18 years, the Society’s mission and footprint grew as they opened seven additional “Old People’s Homes” in Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. Meanwhile, another Baptist association for the elderly was growing in Colorado, called the Baptist Home Association of the Rocky Mountains, (BHA). BHA was chartered in Denver in 1949 with the mission
The first ABHM community opened its doors on August 29, 1931. It was housed in a former men’s dormitory belonging to Parker College (a now-defunct Baptist school) in Winnebago, MN, that had sat vacant for many years before being given to the Society and converted into a residence for seniors. The community was originally named the “Winnebago Old People’s Home” and later renamed Parker Oaks Retirement

The Board must actively participate in the development and regular review of a Strategic Plan which outlines ABHM's goals and the strategies to achieve the goals. It must determine which programs are consistent with ABHM's mission and strategies and monitor the effectiveness of these programs and the achievement of the stated goals.

n Give an annual gift to ABHM according to your personal means.
n Perform the duties of a Director prudently and responsibly. Perform at a level of competence normally expected from such a position on a non-profit Board.
n Serve ABHM as a whole rather than any special interest group or constituency.

2. Meetings:
n Support the implementation of fundraising strategies and programs. As appropriate, use your personal influence with your associates (both personal and corporate).
n Suggest agenda items for Board, committee or task group meetings to ensure that significant policy-related matters are addressed.
n Remember: The President/CEO is the only employee the Board hires, evaluates, directly compensates and, possibly, terminates. All other ABHM employees are hired and managed by the President/CEO and/or his or her managers.
n Avoid prejudiced judgments based on information received from individuals. Urge those with grievances to follow established HR policies and procedures.
6. Fundraising:
n Avoid asking for special favors of the staff, including special requests for extensive information, without at least prior consultation with the President/CEO (or Board Chair).
5. Fiduciary responsibility:
n Serve in leadership positions on the Board and its committees. Undertake special assignments willingly and enthusiastically.
n Suggest possible nominees for Director who are clearly women and men of achievement and distinction and who bring appropriate diversity to the Board. These nominees should be persons who can make significant contributions to the work of the Board and ABHM's progress.
