MAKING AN ENTRANCE HALLWAYS CREATE THE FIRST IMPRESSION OF ANY PROPERTY. THEY INTRODUCE GUESTS TO YOUR STYLE AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY ARE THE FIRST AREA TO WELCOME YOU HOME. Often, when Fine & Country Interior Design talks through a brief, we find clients forget that styling their hallway is key to setting the atmosphere of their entire home. Here are our team’s top five tips to turn your entrances into spaces that reflect the ambience in your property. Fresh air We always incorporate a diffuser into an entrance hallway, as it provides a welcoming scent when you arrive home. Reflect style Mirrors are ideal for hallways as they help broaden narrow corridors while proving practical for a last‑minute make-up touch-up or tie-straightening moment on your way out the door. Smaller mirrors are best positioned over a console table, while larger, floor‑length mirrors are great for more expansive spaces. Wallpaper We love incorporating wallpaper into a hallway design to add texture, colour or pattern to the room. If you have a dado rail, you have the flexibility of papering half the wall and can be bolder with the pattern. We like to use large‑scale, geometric-patterned wallpapers, as they work well in both classic and contemporary-styled properties. A slight sheen in the paper, for example if it is silk or vinyl,

will help add light to the space. If you require your home to be child or pet friendly, we recommend a vinyl paper, as they are more durable and easier to clean. Add personality to your walls Picture walls are a great way to add flair and a focal point to a hallway if you have a large plain wall or want to decorate along a staircase. The great thing about picture walls is that they can be updated over time as you acquire more photographs or artworks. The more eclectic and random the picture wall, the better. Bear in mind that frames can be filled with photographs, prints or mementos. Console tables If you have the space for a small table, we suggest incorporating a slim console table near the front door, which provides a table top for decorative items such as flowers, diffusers or candles and a practical space for post and keys. These tips and tricks are not just useful for homeowners, but also for those looking to sell their home. It is important to remember that the entrance sets the tone for a prospective buyer viewing your property and this first impression may be the deciding factor for their purchase.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD The remote hillside village of Thangpalkot1 in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal has been fully reconstructed in a joint venture by The Fine & Country Foundation and Campbells Foundation. To celebrate the triumphant moment, a team ventured to the summit of Mount Everest to surprise supporters with an iconic flag. On 25 April 2015, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake. More than 100 people were killed, thousands were injured, and millions lost their homes. Campbells Foundation began supporting the village shortly after the disaster, with The Fine & Country Foundation partnering in February 2017. Since then, numerous fundraisers have taken place in a bid by the Fine & Country network, Campbells Foundation and members of the public to help this vibrant village. Four years after the catastrophic earthquake, 63 houses were constructed for the villagers of Thangpalkot1 and in May 2019, we were delighted to announce that all the houses in Thangpalkot1 were funded. To celebrate the end of an era, Renzen Dorzey Bomzan, the Village Coordinator, arranged for a group of Sherpas to trek to the summit of Mount Everest with a customised flag to thank everyone who helped rebuild Thangpalkot1. NEW OFFICE IN NORTH SOMERSET Launching on 14 June, Fine & Country North Somerset became the latest office within the brand to open its doors. The office is in good hands, with Luke Parle and Mark Hunter at the helm. Mark is a partner at Hunter Leahy Estate Agents, which has been operating in and around the region since 1999. According to Mark, there is over 95 years of combined estate agency experience within his team, which is why the office is the go-to estate agent in the area. ALGARVE SETS ITS SIGHTS ON NEW MARKETS

The Fine & Country office in Algarve has been busy diversifying its marketing. The region has traditionally collaborated with the UK market and this is still the case for many agents; however, since Fine & Country Algarve launched in 2013, the company has sold to buyers from 21 different countries, with the UK last year making up 24% of the market. Managing Partner Zoie Hawker points out that within the three offices across the Algarve, staff speak at least four different languages. This is an asset that has helped tap into the international buyers' market. They have now set their sights on breaking into the Russian market, due to increased interest. “We made a few sales to Russian buyers last year and have seen more enquiries over recent months,” said Zoie. As part of the new marketing drive, Fine & Country Algarve has booked a stand at Moscow’s Premier International Real Estate Show (MPIRES), taking place on 4-5 October. SITUATED ON A PRIVATE ISLAND IN THE RIVER THAMES BETWEEN WINDSOR AND MAIDENHEAD, THE REJUVENATED MONKEY ISLAND ESTATE HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO BALANCE GLAMOUR AND A RELAXED COUNTRYSIDE VIBE. GISELLE WHITEAKER CROSSES THE BRIDGE IN BRAY FOR SOME ISLAND IDLING.

Standing on lush green lawn, looking at beautifully manicured garden beds where bumblebees drift from petal to petal, it’s hard to believe I’m resting on the rubble of London. I’m admiring the landscaping on Monkey Island in Bray, Berkshire, which wraps around two fetching Palladian structures, known as the Temple and the Pavilion. Set across seven acres, the recently restored Monkey Island Estate has an intriguing history, packed with monarchs, aristocrats, artists and monks – and after the Great London Fire, some city rubble too. Rumour has it that the spit of land sitting in the midst of the Thames may have scored its rather exotic name by association with a band of monks from Merton Priory, rather than any resident primates. The truth is lost in time, but what is known, is that the barges shipping Oxfordshire stone down the river to rebuild London after the MAIN A view of the Pavilion from the bridge to Monkey Island. 1666 Great Fire dumped much of the rubble they returned with onto the Thames’ islands, including Monkey Island, providing it with a solid base and lifting it well above the flood line, unwittingly enhancing its real-estate appeal. In 1723, Charles Spencer, the 3rd Duke of Marlborough, purchased the island for an angling retreat and the Fishing Pavilion and Fishing Temple he commissioned are the basis of the Estate’s offering today. The ceiling paintings in The Monkey Room in the Pavilion – now a comfortable lounge area – are also a legacy from the Duke. Depicting monkeys aping human behaviour, the paintings are the work of Andie de Clermont, whose creations also reside in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. By 1840, the Pavilion had become a riverside inn and the island saw such illustrious visitors as Queen Victoria and Edward VII, operatic singer Dame Nellie Melba, composer Sir Edward Elgar and poet Siegfried Sassoon. Writer Rebecca West and lover H.G. Wells spent time here, and much later, after a change of hands and architectural expansion, it became a popular social haunt, with Princess Margaret visiting, along with numerous socialites and stars. With such popularity, it’s difficult to understand its decline and disrepair at the end of the last century, but Malaysian hospitality group YTL Hotels has breathed new life into the chimp, with extensive repair and refurbishment work taking place over the past three years. Now, Monkey Island has once again opened its doors, ready to add to its list of distinguished guests. There’s certainly a lot going on. There are chickens in a coop at one end of the island, and beehives a little further down, past the smokehouse where the Estate smokes its own salmon. A Victorian potting shed is down that way as well, where some experimental tea-growing is planned; the herb garden has recently been planted; and during our visit, the property is hosting its first wedding. The appeal goes beyond that, though; everything is done that little bit differently on Monkey Island, turning a visit into a journey of discovery. Naturally, the rooms are stylish – think contemporary English country house. Our corner room has a private balcony overlooking the river. Should we tire of that view, there’s a lounge on the ground floor of the Temple, where coffee and cake is served in the afternoons. There are also two shepherd’s huts on the island, set up for stargazing and marshmallow toasting on clear nights, and a secret staircase in the Pavilion leads to an intimate whisky snug above The Monkey Room. Firepits outside The Monkey Bar burn as the evenings cool, creating another hotspot, the perfect place for a boozy hot chocolate. There’s a spa at Monkey Island too, on a custom‑made narrow boat. And it’s not just the spa setting that’s unusual – the tinctures are all home-made and treatments like The Monk’s Elixir combine booze, botany and beauty. What could be more relaxing than sipping on monk‑brewed ancient herbal tonics pre-massage, as the river swirls along the side of the vessel? Should the water prove alluring, private boat hires are available for a sundowner circumnavigation of the island or waterborne exploration further afield. We cruise around the island and some way upriver on Dragonfly, a 31’ Frolic manned by the charming Captain Tom, who points out the island’s features and educates us on the wildlife in the area. The boats are a popular transport choice for guests venturing forth to dine on Michelin meals in star-studded Bray, home of Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and The Hind’s Head, along with the Roux brothers’ Waterside Inn. Blumenthal also has a more relaxed eatery in Bray at The Crown. A total of seven Michelin stars reside within the village. Closer to home, The Monkey Island Brasserie, with its vaulted ceilings, classic French doors leading out to the terrace, and open kitchen, is also becoming a favoured food choice. The restaurant’s visual appeal is matched by the quality of the produce on the menu, dished up by the team of chefs visible in the open kitchen, as they purposefully work their culinary magic. The English heritage tomato starter with trio of Nutbourne tomatoes, Bloody Mary dressing, celery salt, Yorkshire fettle cheese and honey-pickled red onion has incredible depth of flavour, as does the wood‑smoked pepper risotto, which incorporates a pleasing crunch courtesy of butter crumble. Each and every ingredient, whether it’s Creedy Carver duck and scorched kale or freshly caught hake and fennel veloute, is given the attention it deserves to make it shine – and is presented with panache. The Brasserie may not be aiming for a star, but it is a worthy addition to Bray’s gourmand offering. Like the moon, Monkey Island’s fortunes over the years have waxed and waned, but under the guiding hand of General Manager Lee Kelly, there’s little doubt the Estate is again on the up and up. With more enhancements in the pipeline – there’s a pool on the way for private use by guests and there’s talk of cookery demonstrations in the recently opened, four-bedroom Long White Cloud for a start – Monkey Island Estate is one to add to the bucket list of beautiful British boltholes. Entering through the stone and wrought-iron gates of Terre Blanche, it is clear that this is a special place. Originally a private estate, Terre Blanche was bought by Sean Connery and then briefly owned by a Swedish retirement company. Plans were in place to develop it as a residential villa estate. The location, nestled between the coast and the mountain villages, and its proximity to Nice airport and the Côte d’Azur, make it an attractive property for such a development. When Dietmar Hopp, an avid golfer, acquired the estate, no development had been undertaken and he reimagined the project. The number of proposed privately owned villas was dramatically reduced. He saw the resort as part of the local environment and recognised the value of maintaining the integrity of its physical and cultural setting. His awareness of the impact on the environment was, and has remained, a central tenet in the development. This vision incorporated preparation for the future. There are small touches, such as the earth removed from one area of land being used to fill another space. Larger elements – with much foresight – include the development of tunnels beneath the roads that link the structures, providing access to electrical and plumbing systems as well as allowing for future technology developments to be incorporated without environmental impact. The water

filtration system is in place with room for expansion with new developments and gardens having been planted with a selection of plants adapted to the environment and an ecological watering system. For golfers, hotel guests and residents, the seamless operation of the resort offers a peaceful, safe environment. Making this work requires a veritable army of people behind the scenes. There are approximately 450 staff members employed here during the summer season. There are four restaurants that provide a range of dining experiences – and a specialised bread oven produces 17 different types of bread for consumption at these eateries. La Faventia specialises in fine dining with contemporary French cuisine in elegant surroundings. Le Gaudina is more informal, with a terrace that makes the most of the sweeping vista of the valley below. Here, diners enjoy the typical Provençal flavours of the region. Le Tousco is conveniently placed next to the infinity pool and offers a light buffet that can also be enjoyed privately in one of the 31 poolside cabanas. Golfers and hotel guests who want views of the golf course can dine in the comfort of the clubhouse at Les Caroubiers.

Two championship golf courses, Le Château and Le Riou, encircle the resort. The latter is for the exclusive use of club members and hotel guests. There are 35 greenkeepers and four maintenance staff who work on the equipment in an extensive air-conditioned workshop. There is plenty for them to do – the mowers are being upgraded to hybrid machines. This is yet another example of how all of the work on the golf course is supported by technology. There are sensors underground that measure the moisture in the soil, making it easy to know how and where water should be used. The waste water from the washing bays is fed into large vats, where it is heated and the vapour is piped back into the air while the solid residue remains, ensuring any harmful chemicals are removed. Not that there are many now, as the resort has changed its use of chemicals as part of the focus on ecological sustainability. A similar process is used for the organic waste from the hotel. Heat is used to reduce the waste to powder form, which can then be used as fertiliser to further improve the soil.

For art aficionados, the walls are a gallery for Hopp to share his extensive private art collection. Sculptural work is positioned in the gardens, enhancing each area. At the entrance to the award-winning spa, the magnificent piece by Tamara Kvesitadze, Man and Woman, is a moving work that melts two bodies into one, to mesmerising effect. At each turn, Terre Blanche takes your breath away. Around every corner there is a new view of the natural setting that exists in harmony with the man-made structures. Neither dominates, evidence that Hopp’s foresight both achieves and preserves the perfect balance.

The area where technology is most clearly on show is the Albatros Golf Performance Centre. This year, the centre launched the Terre Blanche Golf Academy, offering a series of programmes including intensive training for amateurs and professionals alike. The courses combine biomechanical analysis with physical and mental coaching. Staff have the skills to work with a wide range of clients, including professionals, amateurs and children. Unique to Terre Blanche, the Biomecaswing technology customises programmes based on kinetic analysis and a physical assessment of a player’s balance. With such facilities, combined with the hotel staff accommodation that is only used during the summer season, it is an obvious choice to host an intensive live-in training course for the French junior team.

Despite the pro-golfer facilities, the resort is run with families in mind. There is a kids club, taking on some of the onus of entertaining children and a special children’s menu is available, with a nutritionist employed to ensure a healthy diet is maintained.

Occupying an enviable location on the outskirts of the village of West Haddon is Foxhill Manor, an exquisite, imposing manor house on a plot of five acres overlooking the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. Constructed in 1896, the property has the external appearance of a fine Victorian house of distinction. “We quickly realised what we were looking at was a rare opportunity, as the location was perfect. Needless to say, a leap of faith was taken, and the restoration journey commenced,” says the owner. “I held my breath and committed to the purchase, then set about taking on all the challenges Foxhill Manor would throw at me. My first observation was the Victorian kitchen – it was tiny and disproportionate; now we have two. Other head-scratching issues were the flow of the house. It was a 20-bedroom rabbit warren, whereas today, we have eight lovely bedrooms and plenty of bathrooms. “I remember arriving at the top of the drive and looking with trepidation at the sheer size and scale of the project we were about to embark upon. The house was in dire need of a lot of love, so we knew we had a tremendous amount of hard work ahead of us, but it’s a building with so much character and so many stories to tell. It’s thought that King George V was at one point in time a regular visitor. We knew we could transform it into something really quite special,” adds the owner. And truly, they have. Working with an interior designer, they threw themselves into the project whole-heartedly, tackling nearly 11,000 square feet of living space and electing to take it back to brick to renovate, restore and rejuvenate. Looking at the current floorplan of the home, it is evident this country home has been carefully considered for both family living and friends visiting. It is well zoned, in that it is possible to close a wing when it is not in use or open it up and make it accessible for guests or, indeed, a celebration for the masses. Both the house and gardens have been designed for entertaining. Blending seamlessly with the views of the country, the gardens feel expansive but are manageable. Landscaping has transformed the once-tired gardens into an open space for children to play. This also showcases the significant specimen trees that were otherwise lost. While on a large plot, one of the aspects the owners love about the house is that they have neighbours and don’t feel isolated. “We also like the fact the property does not sit in the centre of the five-acre plot, like many do, as it allows our imaginations to consider other opportunities. We realise it’s these sorts of aspects, that happened more by good fortune than by consideration, that have made the biggest difference to our quality of life and lifestyle choices,” says the owner. Literally, an enoteca is a wine repository. In Italy, traditionally, an enoteca was a place to go and imbibe wine, often on the way to another spot for a full meal. Times, though, are changing. Nowadays, most enoteca serve at least light appetisers. And an enoteca in the UK? Well that’s a whole new ballgame. I’ll confess, I like the idea of dining in a wine library – and Enoteca Rosso, on Kensington High Street in London, certainly looks the part. It’s hard to imagine this cavernous space was once a bank and then a spa, although the pillars, high-coffered ceiling and sections of mosaic floor hint at prior lives, as does the private dining space downstairs, inside the old bank safe. There’s a somewhat industrial vibe on ground level, with steel chairs, filament lights hung on red wires, and a lengthy counter running below the windows, where solo drinkers and diners can sit inconspicuously and sip on aperitivo. It’s the walls of terracotta triangles, though, that enforce the library concept and add the wow factor, the triangles housing hundreds of bottles from the voluminous, all-Italian wine list. There are far too many wines for a grape novice, so we pass the responsibility of pairing back to the sommelier. Orders in, we nibble on Kermit-green, fleshy, overgrown Castelvetrano olives and soft-yet-crusty focaccia, brown and charcoal bread, dipped in afternoon-sun-yellow olive oil. We are ready to be taken on a culinary journey. We quickly tip our hat to the sommelier, who aids us in sipping our way across Italy. Our favourite drop of the evening is an easy‑drinking Cavaceppo Passerina from Il Conte Villa Prandone. The food from Head Chef Flavio Militello also deserves recognition. We start with a tartare trio: tuna with a dressing of spring onions and citrus; salmon and avocado; and amberjack tail with green apples. Contrasting textures and levels of sweet and sour make each of the circle‑shaped mounds of fresh fish an adventures for the taste buds. Next up is the chef’s selection of cold cuts and cheese. Chef Flavio is clearly feeling generous, as the slate delivered to the table is piled high with culatello, mortadella with pistachios, a semi-hard buffalo milk cheese, a goat cheese soaked with grapes from the area, and assorted crispbreads and grissini. “That does not taste like normal mortadella; it has such a rich flavour,” says my boyfriend Elio, his eyes wide with delight. He should know – he’s half Italian. “I think there might be … truffle oil?” he posits. He’s right. The whole concept of truffled mortadella makes me rethink my apathy towards the light pink sausage. In this form, it’s delectable. Another light dish follows – agnolotti del plin, a traditional Piedmont ravioli filled with pistachio. It’s served on a layer of sweet prawn tartare, finished with prawn bisque. The resulting nutty sweetness is a real palate-pleaser, as is the following bowl of gnocchi, made with dried tomatoes. The red gnocchi, green basil veloute and stark white burrata cheese unintentionally represent the colours of the Italian flag and the intense flavours are proudly patriotic to Italy’s fresh produce focus. The next pasta dish sees a mound of white lamb ragout with fresh oregano sitting on perfectly al dente saffron tagliatelle. The lamb mince is surprisingly delicate, lightly fragranced, allowing the home-made pasta to be the star. It’s so delicious we mop up every drizzle of sauce with the remaining chunks of bread, returning our plates clean. Our final savoury selection is caramelised duck with crunchy endive and creamy sweet potato. Found more

often in northern Italian dishes, the duck slices here are tender, the honeyed undertones enhanced by the smooth sweet potato. It’s a pleasant side-step from pasta, representing the diversity that’s not always seen in Italian eateries. Feeling rather full, we accept the offer of a dessert taster, rather than full portions. Three bite-sized morsels – Lady Berry, Chef’s Mousse, and the Caprese – are duly delivered. The Lady Berry sees puff pastry paired with pink cream cheese, served with forest fruits, which give a tangy edge that cuts through the sweetness; the beetroot and cheese mousse combines salty and sweet with a silky smooth texture; and the decadent Caprese chocolate almond cake with Guinness ganache, salted caramel and banana ice-cream finishes us with its deep, rich intensity. Enoteca Rosso may have strayed from the traditional enoteca concept with the addition of an extensive menu, but it’s stayed true to presenting Italian wine and food in the best possible light. Carefully curated, yet retaining the simplicity and focus on fresh produce Italian food is known for, Enoteca Rosso is worth talking in the library about.
