The village of Burley is steeped in history, with evidence of Saxon occupation in the name; Burley is composed of two Saxon words, ‘burgh’ meaning fortified place, and ‘leah’, meaning open meadow or clearing in a wood. This village is one of the few remaining that still practices the old tradition of Commoning, which allows animals to graze on the open forest. I have wonderful memories of staying in this cottage when we used to come on family holidays to the New Forest when I was a child. We would visit all of the local villages, walk in the forest, and go crabbing in Mudeford which was a lot of fun. My father bought the property as a holiday home and it’s been in our family now for over 50 years,” says the owner.

I must also mention Shappen Stores which is a nice little place to buy locally sourced food and delicacies, as do the farm shops in Crow. Bournemouth and Southampton have a wide range of shops and amenities, as does Ringwood and the Furlong Centre. We also have local events taking place in the village, including Jubilee celebrations and the Coronation.”

We’ve celebrated some big events here, including birthday cocktail parties with 30 guests who joined us in the kitchen / dining room which is the heart of our home. It’s a brilliant room as there’s plenty of space for us all to be together cooking and chatting at the table, so the nominated chef isn’t left out. We’ve also hosted a family reunion in the garden which is an amazing sun trap in the summer.”*
