We bought the bungalow about three years ago and hoped it would be our ‘forever home’. Sadly, for health reasons, we are having to move. We fell in love with the property as soon as we saw it with all the wonderful wood features that were created by the previous owner who was a joiner and owned a timber business. We feel it is a beautiful and unique home surrounded by wonderful countryside but, being near the centre of the island, it provides easy access to the ferry ports, towns and beaches.
Newchurch is a delightful village and is less than half a mile from the property. It acquired its name from a ‘New Church’ that was built in 1087. It includes an excellent garden centre with a new café as well as the renowned Garlic Farm and the award winning Pointer Inn, where you can enjoy a drink and a meal. It is only a short distance to the local primary school and the bus stop is close by providing access to Newport, Shanklin and Sandown. While, for the more energetic, The Sustrans 23 cycle route runs through the village and there are also superb places to go for country walks.
Shanklin is not far away with its attractive seafront and beach as well as the charming Old Village with its thatched cottages, independent shops, restaurants and pubs while the Shanklin Theatre provides a variety of professional and amateur shows for evening entertainment. We are also less than five miles from Sandown with its well-known pier and high street plus a station for trains that run between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. Sandown includes a golf club, a range of shops, restaurants and schools as well as the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary.”*

If you love the warm feeling of wood, this charming and unusual detached bungalow in the hamlet of Langbridge close to Newchurch village could tick all the right boxes. Although constructed of local Isle of Wight stone in 1968 it has more recently been covered in cedar cladding and the first thing you see as your drive onto the wide gravel frontage is the beautifully hand crafted cedar wood veranda with a built in bench that runs the width of the property.
A pair of diamond paned French doors open into the entrance hall with its solid oak doors to the various rooms and impressive American Redwood Sequoia flooring that flows through to the lounge and kitchen/breakfast room. The warm and friendly lounge includes exposed ceiling beams and a fireplace with a gorgeous American elm mantlepiece and a log burning stove as well as built in elm shelving.
There is a wide oak framed archway from the lounge to the kitchen/breakfast room providing an open plan feel. This also has exposed ceiling beams as well as a raft of hand built oak units with solid wood worktops, a range cooker, dishwasher, space for a table and chairs and access to the adjacent cloak room and utility room with additional wood units housing other appliances and an American fridge freezer.
A door from the kitchen leads to the delightful oak framed conservatory that makes an excellent dining room with additional seating where you can sit and enjoy views across the garden and the National Trust land beyond. There is a contemporary shower room and two double bedrooms including the main bedroom with built in oak wardrobes and wide patio doors to the rear garden.
At the front of the property the gravel hard standing provides off road parking for up to six cars and there is a delightful cedar clad building with a garden area behind. It is currently in use as a games room/cinema with oak framed bi-folding doors as well as stairs to an upper floor gym. However, this detached building could always be converted into an annex/office or studio if required, subject to the necessary permissions.
The secluded rear garden backs onto countryside close to a National Trust nature reserve with plenty of local wildlife near the Red Squirrel Trail and the River Yar. It includes a lawn, raised vegetable beds, greenhouses, a number of fruit trees including apples, pears and cherries as well as a wisteria covered pergola and a path to a stunning oak framed gazebo and decked terrace that is ideal for al fresco dining.
