WAYFARERS COTTAGE

KEY FEATURES

Wayfarers Cottage is a charming and characterful thatched house that began life in the sixteen hundreds, with eighteenth and nineteenth century extensions. The present owners Andrew and Jo describe how they first walked through the gate into the walled garden, awash with roses and nestled in its centre: the quintessential English cottage with its overhanging thatch, white walls and timbers. They were captivated and it was an instant decision that this was to be their new home.

They are both passionate about the property’s history and as an architect Andrew says he ensured that any changes respected all the historical details. The new, chic country style kitchen strikes the perfect balance between old and new; whilst the fantastic cob walled, thatched, ‘potting shed,’ a reference to its previous use, is now a stylish, adaptable space, complete with shower room. It is currently an elegant dining room and has been the setting for many happy meals round the large oak table.

It is a home flooded with natural light, creating a positive ambience, and Jo says the house wraps you in a warm and cosy blanket. The sitting room is the perfect setting for the annual Christmas tree and, with the candlelight flickering across the beams, you feel transported back four hundred years. It is quite magical.

With its four bedrooms, the house welcomes visitors. Those in the master bedroom are always wowed by the overhang of the thatch which frames the views of the glorious garden, trees and rooftops across the Wallop valley, seen through charming, dual aspect, waist height windows.

Wayfarers Cottage, with its walled garden, can be a peaceful retreat where one feels one can pull up the drawbridge when required. It is a tranquil, private oasis, where the seasonal planting ensures a year of colour and beauty, from carpets of spring flowers to roses that smother the walls and bloom though to autumn. The welcoming space can equally play host to warm and joyous gatherings, nestled in a friendly village community,

The cottage sits along a quiet track on the edge of the Wallops Conservation Area, with medieval churches, primary school, village halls, garage and shop. Footpaths trail through the surrounding stunning countryside of the Test Valley. You can enjoy the best of both worlds as Stockbridge is only five minutes away; Salisbury and Winchester are within a twenty minute drive. From nearby Grateley station it is an hour into London Waterloo. Andrew and Jo will miss everything about Wayfarers Cottage, the house, its quirky and delightful personality, the garden, the car park opposite where the beech trees and wildflower bank add to the list of captivating features. They are sure the new owners will love it and value its history as they have.
