A Stunning Townhouse in the heart of historic Ludlow with views from the upper floors towards Ludlow Castle.
51 Mill Street is situated in the heart of historic Ludlow, just off Castle Square. Ludlow, one of England’s most sought-after Market Towns, is renowned for its range of independent shops, cafes, and variety of pubs and restaurants. The nearby Assembly Rooms is a wonderful entertainment venue with live theatre, a cinema and many events throughout the year.
Grade II Listed, the house dates back to 1713; it is a handsome townhouse, retaining many original character features with exposed beams, fireplaces and wooden floors. From the upper floors are wonderful views towards Ludlow Castle and to countryside beyond. Thoughtfully improved by the current owners and exquisitely presented, it has been run for many years as a successful holiday let. Equally, 51 Mill Street would make a fabulous permanent home with its southwest facing courtyard garden.
Ground Floor - The main entrance door opens into the light and airy Dining Kitchen. The Kitchen is appointed with a range of solid wooden units and granite work surfaces - with generous space for appliances and a gas-fired Aga. It boasts a solid oak floor and windows to the front and rear. With ample space for table and chairs it provides a wonderful space for entertaining. The Dining area has part panelled walls and a feature fireplace. A door and steps lead down to the useful dry Cellar, ideal as workshop and providing additional storage space. From the Dining Kitchen a door opens to the courtyard Gardens where there is a refurbished Utility Room with further space for appliances and ample storage space.
On the first floor is the spacious Lounge, with wooden floor, feature fireplace and sash windows overlooking Mill Street. Off here is a cosy Snug with sash window to the front and a feature fireplace. This opens to a small Study area with window to the rear. Also on the first floor is a Shower Room with a good-sized walk-in shower.
Second Floor & Third Floor - On the second floor is the stunning Master Bedroom with sash windows to the front and a Bathroom. A second staircase rises to another good-sized Double Bedroom.
On the third floor is a lovely room with Bedroom and Sitting Area and a Dressing Room off occasional Bedroom. From the upper floors you enjoy stunning views over the roof tops towards Ludlow Castle and countryside beyond.
Outside - The pretty walled Courtyard Garden enjoys a sunny aspect. Thoughtfully landscaped, it has space for outside table and chairs. The rooms above the archway are NOT part of a flying freehold since the land beneath the arch belongs to the property.
Fifty One Mill Street is a superb early eighteenth-century townhouse in the centre of historic Ludlow, and the present owners, John and Margaret, were immediately drawn to its attractive façade and the warm and inviting ambience within the house, where the charming period features blended seamlessly with the comforts of modern living.
They bought the property fourteen years ago as a holiday home but enjoyed the house and town so much that they spent increasing amounts of time there. Six years ago, they decided to refurbish the house as a total holiday let business and move permanently to a nearby property in Ludlow. They have enjoyed the experience of running the holiday let and have gained nearly one hundred percent five-star reviews. The ow ners brought the exterior utility room up to a high standard and it is now a spacious and useful room, whilst the boiler in the cellar is a year old. They replaced three windows with double glazed versions, more in keeping with the historic originals, and in the upper storey installed two double glazed dormer windows which have fantastic views of the castle and the west of the town.
The house is a collection of visual treats with a wonderful sense of history. The kitchen is the hub of the house, and the perfect place to offer hospitality. It is a pleasure to spend time there with friends and family in this warm, spacious and comfortable room. The top storey is also a great place to spend quality time, as it is a perfect adult sanctuary or guest accommodation with its bedroom, dressing room, lounge and TV area. The dry well-ventilated and warm cellar is perfect as a workshop and an excellent storage area. The owners have used and appreciated all the rooms and are proud of this delightful home and have been happy to share it with others.
The small west facing garden enjoys sunny afternoons, and when the west wall is covered by the wisteria, in its full and magnificent bloom, it is the talk of the town. T he garden has a separate access door which is very useful if you are returning from a muddy dog walk.
The house is perfectly placed for the Castle Square markets, the local restaurants and cafes, and the varied cultural events in the Assembly Rooms. Despite all the conveniences of town life it is a very short distance to walks leading around the castle, along the river and into open countryside.
The owners are selling the house but intend to still live in Mill Street – they love this area of Ludlow so much. Even so, they will miss the house which has given them so many happy memories.*
