Looking at the venues, there are a number of ingredients that add up to a recipe for success. Le Golf National Paris It is not surprising that Le Golf National Albatros course was selected to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. The course was designed jointly by Hubert Chesneau and Robert von Hagge and is ranked amongst the top 100 courses in the world. Chesneau says his goal was to create a course that could host major events with conditions that enhanced the spectator experience. He certainly achieved this. Le Golf National has been home to the French Open since 1991 and will be hosting the 2024 Olympics. The Albatros is one of three courses at the venue. The Aigle course, with its undulating fairways and flowing roughs, provides a true links feel and is a little less challenging, but can provide a great warm up before tackling the Albatros. Operating more as a training course is the shorter, nine‑hole Oiselet course. The recently refurbished on-site hotel accommodation has some rooms with breathtaking views over the last four holes of the Albatros course. Coupled with the location in Guyancourt, 20 kilometres southwest of central Paris and 10 kilometres from Versailles, the venue is also committed to the promotion of nature, conservation of resources and engagement with local communities to ensure its sustainability. ➤➤

Lighthouse Golf and Spa Resort Bulgaria Lighthouse Golf and Spa Resort in Bulgaria was also ranked in the top 100. Situated five kilometres from the Bulgarian town of Balchik at the heart of Cape Kaliakra, the Lighthouse course provides stunning cliff-top views of the Black Sea. It was fitting that the tour was led by Ian Woosnam, a previous US Open winner and designer of the championship course. Black Mountain Golf Club Hua Hin Thailand Accolades in 2018 were not restricted to venues based in Europe. Black Mountain Golf Club was selected as one of the 12 best golf facilities in Asia. ropelled by threats of Beast from the East Part Two, while even Athens’ Acropolis sparkles with snow, my travel companion Naomi and I head to Malaga and the Gran Hotel Miramar, drawn by the allure of warmth and luxury. A field hospital during the Spanish Civil War and, more recently, the Royal Palaces of Justice, the Gran Hotel Miramar was resurrected by Hoteles Santos, opening in 2016. It is now a member of the prestigious hotel group Leading Hotels of the World.

In the evening, seated in Gran Hotel Miramar’s restaurant, Principe de Asturias, I enjoy duck, dressed in a silky chocolate and chilli sauce, with the table accompaniment of an equally silky, local olive oil, Finca la Torre. Neither would have been out of place on a cuisine catwalk. Waiter Tariq tells us, “It was voted best in the world last year by The Convention of Olive Oils of the World.” It’s testament to talented Executive Chef, Diego Nicás’ passion for regional and traditional products.

As our taxi squeaks its departure on polished stone, we enter the lobby beneath a sign announcing Palacio Miramar. Once inside, it becomes evident why. We feel like pilgrims as a sea of café con leche polished marble and an overwhelmingly delicate fragrance provided by Aromas Fenpal of Barcelona take centre stage.

Later, Concierge Jose Maria Arias gives us a peek at the old basement prison, complete with graffiti, destined now to keep only wine behind bars. We pass through the cathedral space of the courtyard lobby bar, lit by a cluster of chandeliers and natural light through the geometric glass roof. Cloistered by Corinthian pillars and Nasrid motifs, it hosts dark sofas, arm and tub chairs, a grand piano and attentive staff. It also provides access to the gorgeous Botanical Spa by Sisley, where I have an appointment to come, and the gym, where I do not.

After checking in, we decide never to leave. Our Premier suite is composed of polished marble, framed by enriched cornice plasterwork and floor-to-ceiling mocha drapes. Three separate balcony doors reveal a feast of both traditional and Moorish architecture, while, more prosaically, our room hosts a widescreen television, a DeLonghi coffee machine and a welcoming bottle of bubbly on ice. The hotel’s experiences guide reveals, “a private jet catalogue is available to those wishing to explore far and wide”, but we decide to acquaint ourselves with nearby Malaga harbour instead, finding an array of cafés and bars necklacing an eclectic mix of yachts, cruisers and commercial ships. Offshore, a container ship holds station, while we find the ghost of Picasso in an art exhibition reflecting Malaga’s rich, creative heritage. We resolve to visit the Picasso museum tomorrow. We visit the adult-only Media Luna chill-out rooftop bar, closed now until warmer weather returns. Stunning, coastline views and sunsets await summer visitors as an accompaniment to gourmet food, classic cocktails and drinks. Breakfast the next morning is in the white-marble Mediterraneo Restaurant, offering a feast King Alfonso XIII, whose dream gave birth to the Miramar in 1926, would have relished. A panoramic view of terrace, garden and azure sky entertains and Chef Diego’s passion for produce is exemplified by a frame of honeycomb, fresh from a local beehive. Gold lobsters discreetly adorn pure white walls and marine-accented chairs invite. ➤➤

We discover just how extensive Chef Diego’s larder is when we stroll to the nearby harbour in the afternoon and drink Mojitos, mine cardamom flavoured, the sweet juice crushed before our eyes from freshly cut sugar cane. “It’s from the Costa Tropica, 45 miles east, at Nerja,” the vendor tells us. Driven by warm African winds and protection from the Sierra Nevada, a microclimate gives life to subtropical fruit and vegetables, reminding me conversely, that skiing in the Sierra Nevada is just one and a half hour’s drive from Malaga. Parrots serenade and pines wave us along a boulevard to the centre of Malaga, where the scent of sticky toasted almonds, nougat and marzipan draw us like moths to a flame. We leave with a fragrant bag of candied orange and nougat. At Plaza de la Constitucion, coffee lovers are netted by other intoxicating aromas and under the arch of lights along the Calle Marques de Larios, generous lumps of priceless marble provide rest for the weary. When the seagulls siesta in the tranquil harbour, we decide it’s time to visit the Museo Picasso. We arrive when entry is free, between 4pm and 6pm on Sunday – at other times entry is eight euros. The museum is an extraordinary insight into this genius’ life and work. We have reserved our last day for pure relaxation. In the Botanical Spa by Sisley, transcendental jets pummel my body as palm trees glitter in winter sun and fellow guests enjoy the 9,000-square-metre walled gardens. Reluctantly packing, I acknowledge the revelation, courtesy of my spa meditations, that the time and effort that goes into a work of art is invisible to the untrained eye. Here, though, the team has clearly stamped their signature on the masterpiece that is the Gran Hotel Miramar. n

udapest has been a popular investment choice for over 20 years, offering stability, along with business potential and comfortable living. From an investment perspective, statistically, the rentals market is very active, presenting attractive results in both long- and short-term rentals, which in some cases show yields of over 12%. There’s been a continual, steady rise in property values in the regenerated district over the last few years and city centre properties are in high demand. here are times when property owners and developers struggle to understand why their reasonably priced, well-located property is not getting the offers or the value they expected. It is easy to forget that buyers are looking for their dream home. Buyers can’t always see the potential of a property through the blur of the current owner’s taste or the blank canvas of an empty apartment. A small investment in staging and styling your property can be the difference between months on the market and a quick sale. Although home staging is not a new concept to the property market, over the past few years it has continued to grow in popularity as more and more homeowners recognise the benefits. For a property to sell for the best possible price within the shortest time frame, it needs to appeal to the largest number of potential buyers. Much like a retail shop window uses mannequins to display items in a manner that allows people to picture themselves wearing the clothes or using the products, staging showcases a home’s best features, creates appeal and entices potential buyers to see themselves living in that home – it creates aspirations. Staging alone leads to listed properties selling 73% faster, with sales typically reaching higher prices, according to the Real Estate Staging Association. As an example, we saw one property on the market with two different agents for 417 days, with the highest offer sitting more than 11% under the asking price. With a little over 1% investment in staging and styling, combined with the Fine & Country selling strategy, the property exchanged contracts in just 57 days. This resulted in a net saving for the owner of £37,270 when investing in staging the property. This shows a little style can go a long way, with the homeowner reaping the rewards of their investment.
