> Marathons in May – Race to £1 million

On 16 May 2024, Jon Cooke, CEO of, Sean Newman of Fine & Country Midlands and Craig Dyce, current age group World and European Duathlon Champion, will lace up their running shoes to embark on an incredible journey along the Grand Union Canal Towpath. The route spans 154 miles, beginning at Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, winding through the picturesque countryside of Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and the Chilterns, before concluding at Fine & Country’s Park Lane office in London.

The trio will cover approximately 34 miles per day over the course of five days, with an expected finish date of 20 or 21 May 2024, depending on progress. While Cooke and Dyce plan to run the route, Newman will be walking. The primary purpose of this extraordinary undertaking is to raise funds for The Fine & Country Foundation, which was established in 2014 and is dedicated to assisting those facing poverty and homelessness. Since its inception, The Foundation has raised over £940,000. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the three aim to contribute to the £1 million milestone with this fundraising effort.

While destinations like Mallorca and Ibiza draw visitors seeking sun and nightlife, there are dozens of lesser-known Spanish islands that provide a more tranquil beach escape. From the rugged shores of Galicia to the crystalline waters of the Canary Islands, these hidden gems offer the opportunity to unwind away from the crowds. Here are some of Spain’s best-kept island secrets.

Isla de Ons, Galicia: A Haven of Natural Beauty

Nestled within the Rias Baixas of Galicia, Isla de Ons emerges as a haven of unspoiled natural beauty. A natural paradise at the entrance to the Pontevedra estuary, the island is part of the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. This archipelago is made up of the main island, Ons, together with the islands of Onza or Onceta and other smaller islets. Despite its proximity to the mainland, the island remains relatively undiscovered, making it an ideal retreat.

Accessible by ferry from Bueu, Portonovo or Sanxenxo, Isla de Ons enchants visitors with its rugged coastline, pristine beaches and lush greenery. Despite fewer than 100 people living on the island, there are nine villages, each made up of a small cluster of homes, such as the far-flung village of Melide, with only three houses.

Located next to the ferry port, Barrio de Curro is the closest thing to an urban centre on the island. Here, there are places to eat, accommodation, shops and a church. The closest stretch of sand is Dornas Beach, comprising coarse sand, rocky forms and turquoise water.

From sea caves, such as Buraco do Inferno, to coastal viewpoints, such as Mirador de Fedorentos, which features an imposing natural balcony overlooking Fedorentos Cove and the islet of Onza, there’s much to explore on

the island. The lighthouse is also a drawcard. Dating from 1926, it sits at the highest altitude of the island and was one of the last lighthouses in the area inhabited by lighthouse keepers.

Islas Medes, Catalonia: A Diver’s Paradise Situated off the coast of Catalonia, the Islas Medes archipelago offers a sanctuary for underwater enthusiasts seeking to explore the rich marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean. Comprising seven small islands and islets, this protected marine reserve boasts crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life, making it a paradise for divers and snorkellers.

The islands have around 14 dive sites, including El Dofí and La Vaca. El Dofí is a series of underwater tunnels with a small dolphin statue, which gives the site its name. La Vaca is another underwater tunnel on the largest island, known for its dramatic lighting.

Access to the Islas Medes is restricted to preserve the delicate ecosystem, with boat tours and diving excursions departing from the nearby town of L’Estartit. If you’re feeling fit, you can kayak across to the island, or make your way over by paddleboard.

The Medes Islands were once a pirates’ paradise, but they weren’t the only ones to stay on the islands. In the 15th century, the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre built a fortification on the biggest island and stayed there for several decades. The last human inhabitants abandoned the archipelago in 1934, and no one has lived there since. Only one building remains – the 1868 lighthouse on Meda Gran, the biggest island. This, like the rest of the islands, can be observed from the water only – no one is permitted to land.

La Graciosa, Canary Islands: Serenity in the Archipelago Tucked away in the northern reaches of the Canary Islands, La Graciosa is a volcanic island in the Canary Islands, located two kilometres north of Lanzarote across the Strait of El Río. With its sandy beaches, turquoise waters and laid-back atmosphere, this remote island offers a peaceful, somewhat rustic retreat.

The only two settlements on the island are Caleta de Sebo in the southeast and summer-residence Casas de Pedro Barba; the rest of the island is owned by the Government of Spain and is administered by the National Parks Autonomous Agency. The accommodation is concentrated in Caleta de Sebo, and includes guest houses, self-catering houses for longer stays, apartments, and a campsite with showers and bathrooms.

Accessible by a regular ferry service from the town of Órzola on Lanzarote, Caleta de Sebo is the entry port for visitors, where whitewashed houses line narrow streets and local restaurants serve fresh seafood caught from the surrounding waters. It is also home to the Chinijo Museum, which claims to be the smallest museum in the world; it hosts an informative exhibition on the history of La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago.

Getting around is generally on foot or bicycle – streets and roads on La Graciosa are unpaved sand, and motor vehicles are limited to a few 4x4 taxis that can be arranged to take you wherever you want on the island and then pick you up. The island has four main hiking trails that lead to gorgeous beaches and impressive volcanic mountains. Alternatively, there are jeep tours on offer that visit some of the top natural attractions and beaches, boat tours that circle the island, and bikes are available for rent from several establishments in Caleta de Sebo - and the terrain is mostly flat. There are three mountain biking routes that run across the island.

Scuba diving is also a popular pastime here – La Graciosa is part of the Natural Park of the Chinijo Archipelago, Europe’s largest marine reserve, and home to several protected species. The island has several dive sites suitable for all levels and a scuba diving centre for equipment rental and guided diving.

Formentera: The Jewel of the Balearics Nestled between Ibiza and the mainland, Formentera beckons with its idyllic beaches, turquoise waters and bohemian charm. This is the smallest of the Balearic islands and is regularly cited as the prettiest. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, the laidback island is far from a secret – there are up to 88 ferry sailings per day from Ibiza, with crossing times ranging from 25 minutes to one hour – but it offers a tranquil escape from the party vibe of Ibiza.

International travellers first discovered the island during the hippy movement of the 1960s and 1970s, drawn to its relaxed air and the purity of its landscapes. The island still maintains a bohemian ambience, apparent in the markets dotted throughout its villages, annual ‘flowerpower’ parties and a languid pace of life.

Throughout its history, Formentera has been the subject of legends, written in novels by writers such as Jules Verne, and in songs by musicians as varied as Gilberto Gil and Pink Floyd. It continues to enchant visitors with its pristine coastline, dotted with secluded coves and sandy beaches. Playa de Ses Illetes and Playa de Migjorn are among the island’s most renowned stretches of sand, where crystalline waters offer a clear invitation to swimmers and snorkellers.

Away from the beaches, Formentera reveals a landscape of rolling hills, pine forests and salt flats, perfect for exploration by bike or on foot. The island’s villages, such as Sant Francesc Xavier and Es Pujols, exude a relaxed vibe, with whitewashed buildings, lively cafes, and artisanal shops showcasing local crafts. n

It’s no secret that most people like to feel special, whether it’s via the service they receive at a high-end hotel, on a luxury cruise or as a member of an exclusive club. Bronwen Hiller discovers the value of exclusivity in golf.

Exclusivity is like having that one and only key to a treasure chest – only in this case, rather than a treasure chest, it’s a golf club. And the golf club in question is The Dutch. The Dutch was conceived back in 1996, when four friends and golf professionals who lived in the Netherlands sat in front of a warm fire at Loch Lomond and formed a golf company called Made in Scotland. The aspiration was to improve the game they love in the Netherlands and they dreamed of creating a world-class golf experience that would compete with the top golf courses in Continental Europe.

That dream took some time to come to fruition but, in 2011, The Dutch officially opened. Made in Scotland worked with Colin Montgomerie and Ross McMurray of European Golf Design to create a course that would live up to the high standards necessary to host European Tour events. They took a site characterised by flat farmland and created interest with water – several lakes, streams and canals – and sensible shaping. The Dutch is every inch the Tour venue. Styled in the fashion of an inland links, The Dutch features links-like bunkering, undulating green complexes and diverse, burn-like water hazards. According to Phil Helsby, Managing Director of The Dutch, it is a “championshipstandard course with wonderful risk and reward holes, fast, undulating greens, year-round top condition and a great challenge to players of all standards”.

Soon after opening, the Netherlands put forward a bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup. France won that bid, but the infrastructure and facilities developed at The Dutch

remained as a lasting legacy and are pitched at a level capable of all the demands required to host any large-scale professional golf event.

Beyond golfing events, however, The Dutch represents a different kind of golf experience to anything that previously existed in the Netherlands. The level of service and the quality of facilities, from the Academy to practice areas to the locker rooms, are second to none. Within the clubhouse, there are multifunctional meeting rooms, dining facilities, there’s a large terrace, and outstanding locker/changing rooms with a bar, sauna and locker room attendant.

Along the course, there are two halfway houses and there’s a starters’ café at the driving range, valet parking and a maingate attendant who meets all guests on arrival. Helsby says, however, that possibly the most important difference is the involvement of golf professionals in the day-to-day running of the club. There are no less than ten PGA Professionals involved daily at The Dutch.

Helsby outlines what to expect from a typical round of golf at The Dutch. “On arrival, you are met by the main-gate attendant and welcomed to The Dutch. The next stop is valet parking, after which your clubs are prepared for play and placed on a trolley or buggy and you are shown the way into the clubhouse, where you will be welcomed by our hospitality team and led down to the locker room. Here, the locker room attendant takes over, offering a cup of coffee or tea and showing you the locker that has been reserved for you with your brass name tag already in place. Then, you’ll

visit the driving range to warm up, with the balls placed in pyramids for you to practise from a mat or from the grass tee before entering the course for 18 holes.

“During your round, you are looked after by the catering car, halfway houses on each nine and, on finishing the round, your clubs are cleaned and returned to your car. A drink on the terrace or in the spijkbar can be followed by a sauna/ shower in the locker room with a nice drink and a snack before getting ready for dinner out on the terrace or in the restaurant. From simple brasserie dining to fine dining, the choice is yours. After dinner, visit the whisky and cigar room before departure, when you are handed your car keys by the golf operations attendant and wished a nice journey home.”

Beyond the facilities and the golf pro involvement, there’s another aspect that draws interest – the air of exclusivity that surrounds the club. The Made in Scotland team already had a business network of avid golfers and The Dutch became their home, with the business network dubbed ‘The Clan’. The club quickly became a place where business meets golf, where companies indulge clients and build relationships that last beyond the tees.

The Dutch is a very private club – for a non-member to get a game, they need to know a member or have a corporate contact. According to Helsby, “Year in year out, many members say their guests are standing in line, waiting for their next invitation.” That’s the power of exclusivity –along with a superb golf course and a plethora of unrivalled amenities. The South African town of Franschhoek is nestled in a scenic valley around an hour from Cape Town in the heart of South Africa’s wine country. When the Huguenots first settled there over 300 years ago, they brought their traditions and knowledge in winemaking and viticulture from their native France. The French influence is still apparent, with many streets and businesses given French names.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Franschhoek is a destination of note for wine enthusiasts. In fact, the town is considered to be the country’s food and wine capital, with eight of the top 100 restaurants in the country, nearly 30 wine cellars, and over 28 restaurants to choose from for a gastronomic indulgence.

Here, amidst the rolling vineyards and serene olive groves, stands a testament to refined living: a property encompassing a magnificent six-bedroom Main House and a luxurious two-bedroom villa, sitting on a 2-hectare smallholding in Green Valley. The rural setting is tranquil, yet it is just a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Franschhoek.

On arrival at the property, visitors are greeted by the Main House’s imposing façade, where oversized entrance doors beckon with an air of grandeur.
