In the Local Area The village of East Dean lies roughly between Chichester, Midhurst and Petworth and is also within 2 miles of Goodwood. There is a popular public house (Star & Garter) in East Dean, well known for good food and hospitality and it is within easy walking distance of the Fox Goes Free in Charlton and the Partridge in Singleton. To the west, Singleton has a primary school, a fine village cricket green and is home to the Weald and Downland Museum. A further popular primary school, along with local shopping facilities and West Dean Gardens, may be found at West Dean. The stunning countryside of the South Downs National Park is immediately to hand with a varied choice of footpaths and bridleways giving access to the Trundle, Graffham, Cocking, Lavant and the surrounding areas. Nearby Goodwood is internationally known for its famous racecourse and also provides a country club with tennis courts and two 18-hole golf courses. The annual Festival of Speed held at Goodwood has become a prominent international event, as has the Revival at its historic motor circuit. The Cathedral City of Chichester can be found approximately 8 miles to the south of East Dean and provides a comprehensive range of shopping and cultural amenities, arranged partly within its pedestrianised centre dominated by the Norman cathedral and ancient city walls. The arts are well represented with facilities including the internationally known Festival Theatre and Pallant House Gallery housing one of the best modern art collections in the country. Sailing may be enjoyed from the many centres around Chichester Harbour and both kite and windsurfing from the well-known beaches at West Wittering. A mainline railway station at Chichester offers services to London (Victoria and Gatwick), whilst Haslemere to the north provides a faster service to London (Waterloo) within 50 minutes.
