SELLER INSIGHT

When we bought this property, it was basically a concrete shell sitting in half an acre of rough land,” say the current owners of Ashmead. “We could see the potential to create a wonderful family home, and over the nearly 35 years we have been here, it has proven to be exactly that. When designing the house, we took great care to ensure that it was comfortable, spacious, and suitable for everyday life and entertaining alike. There is plenty of room here for all aspects of family life: an office with separate entrance for working from home; a peaceful garden room for relaxing in front of the television; a bright and airy sitting room in which to read a book or chat over a cup of tea; and a large dining room which seats twelve for festive meals every Christmas and New Year. We have kept the property up to date throughout our time here, the most recent improvements being a brand new kitchen and redecoration of the garden room to match. What’s more, there remains scope for further changes: the dining room, home gym and office could easily be repurposed to create self-contained living accommodation for an elderly relative who wants to retain a degree of independence.”

Outside, the generous gardens serve as an extension of the house itself throughout the warmer months of the year. “The garden is one of our favourite aspects of living here,” the owners say, “as it is where we have made many happy memories as a family. The expansive lawn makes this the ideal family garden, providing plenty of space for children to play. Our dogs love it, too, as we can close the gate and let them run free. One of our favourite things to do when we have family here is to go out into the garden after dinner and kick a football around. We have hosted countless special occasions here too, from Christenings and anniversary celebrations with a marquee on the lawn, to children’s birthday parties with bouncy castles. The large driveway means that we are never short of guest parking, too.”

Indeed, the setting of the property is part of its appeal. “Being set well back from the main road, it is totally private here, with no passing traffic or footfall,” say the owners. “Only the paper boy and the postman come to the door! Yet, we are in the heart of a community with everything we need within striking distance. There is a coop and a pet shop just 5 minutes’ walk away, with larger shops less than 7 minutes away by car. The station is around 2 miles distant for trains to London, with Bristol airport and the M5 motorway also close by, so this is a great location for commuting or travel further afield.”*
