The house was fully restored to exceptionally high conservation standards, with effective thermal insulation, approximately ten years ago. Character is in abundance including an oak lintel over the inglenook which is reputed to have come from one of only two medieval nunneries in Wales, complete with 15th century carvings. Upstairs are the remnants of medieval paintings on the chimney and ceiling timbers. The importance of Gwern Y Fedw is reflected in several publications including Pevsner’s Powys Guide, Peter Smith’s Houses of the Welsh Countryside and it featured in a S4C TV documentary on the history of Welsh Houses. The very well-presented accommodation briefly comprises; kitchen breakfast room, living room, dining room, snug/study, office/ground floor bedroom/family room, bathroom, first floor landing room (currently used as a child’s bedroom) and two first floor large double bedrooms. Outside there are well-stocked cottage gardens, a wild meadow and the house has a range of attached barns and a further large detached outbuilding with open-fronted garage.

The buildings have electric and water supplies and could be converted into additional accommodation or various uses (subject to the relevant consents).. The property has to be seen to be believed and an internal inspection is a must for those serious buyers who want to purchase a piece of history which offers a wonderful rural lifestyle. Location The property is situated about 5 miles from the town of Llanfair Caereinion where there is a doctors’ practice; dental surgery; post office; library; bakery; convenience store/newsagent; fish and chip shop; pubs; garage and petrol filling station; and the Llanfair Light Railway. The Llanfair Light Railway provides a rail link to the nearby market town of Welshpool which is approximately 14 miles to the east. On the edge of Welshpool, Powis Castle has magnificent interiors and beautiful terraced gardens overlooking the Severn Valley. The old county town of Montgomery is about 15 miles away with its historic castle ruins and Newtown is about 12 miles to the south and provides a comprehensive range of services.

The wellstocked garden is mostly situated to the front and side of the house, with views over the neighbouring countryside, having been planted with a wide range of plants and shrubs and being well cared for by the current owners. A stream runs close to the eastern boundary, enhancing the idyllic position, with a path leading to the rear of the house where there is a small orchard area, raised beds vegetable garden, greenhouse, a wild garden and a ‘cutch tatus’ (a rare survival of an 18th century potato store) .
