A beautiful conversion of a Tudor/Gothic style country mansion. Danbury Place, as it was once known, was originally an English country house, set within a deer park and first built in 1589, during the reign of Elizabeth I. Eventually, the house having fallen into disrepair, architect Thomas Hopper was commissioned to build the new Danbury Place in 1830, just a couple of hundred feet from the old building. Built in a Tudor Gothic style, it is a large, red brick country mansion with a grand central stone staircase and is located on the periphery of Danbury village on one of the highest points of the county of Essex, giving far-reaching views. In 1845 the house was sold to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for use as an Episcopal Palace for the Bishop of Rochester, and it was then that it became known as Danbury Palace. The Chapel was added during 1860-1868 by Bishop Wigram. During the Second World War Danbury Palace was used as a maternity hospital, visited by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and following the war was sold to Essex County Council and then lent itself for a variety of uses until recent years when the current conversion was carried out.

Inside, this stunning building does not disappoint. On approaching the grand entrance doors with a Coat of Arms overhead, inscribed with the motto ‘Furth, Fortune and Fill the Fetters’ you enter a beautiful reception hall with an historic fireplace and impressive, sweeping staircase with oak balustrading and outstanding chandelier, leading to this first floor apartment.

Careful attention to detail during the restoration has retained original features whilst incorporating modern, high specification accommodation, including oak flooring with underfloor heating. Being one of the largest apartments the feeling of space is immense with its high ceilings and wide, bright hallways giving an open and airy aspect. On descending the staircase your eye is taken by a beautiful, high overhead fanlight window, inset in decorative plasterwork, providing natural light and giving a contemporary feel and complemented by the further feature window lying ahead.

Seller Insight It was the unique history of this property which first appealed to me,” says the current owner of Danbury Palace Drive, “steeped in stories and resplendent with original features and details. The property has passed through the hands of various owners over the centuries,” the owners continues, “gaining a Chapel, parkland and lakes along the way, and was even used as a maternity hospital during the Second World War. The most recent conversion was completed just two years ago, of which this apartment is a part.” “The magnificent entrance hall provides an impressive welcome to the property, with a grand staircase leading up to the first floor where this stunningly appointment apartment resides.” “There is a great sense of community on the estate, with residents often coming together for barbeques or the annual fete in the communal grounds. We have even had tennis tournaments on the shared court, with visiting friends and family mixing with the neighbours in one big sociable group, enjoying the sunshine together.” “I will miss driving up to the property at night, coming up the sweeping driveway to see the beautiful Grade II listed house in all its splendour, sitting amidst the stunningly landscaped grounds.”* * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property.
