Seller Insight Tucked away on a quiet no-through road in the heart of the sought after Oxfordshire village of Adderbury is Mount Pleasant, a charming period cottage that dates back to the early 18th century. “When we first happened upon this house, it’s fair to say that it was in a pretty rundowns state, but nevertheless both my husband and I fell totally in love with it the minute we set eyes on it,” says Michelle. “It has a real chocolate box beauty to it and enjoys this wonderfully secluded location. It was clear that it was going to take a lot of work to bring it up to scratch, but for us it was an opportunity too good to miss.” “We essentially had to do everything to it. Ceilings had to come down, windows had to be replaced, the electric and plumbing systems had to be completely overhauled… you name it, we did it, but it was a hugely rewarding process and we’ve ended up with such a gorgeous home. It still feels very cottagey and retains lots of lovely original features, but it has a stunning modern kitchen and a beautifully refitted bathroom, all the things needed for comfortable modern living. I think we’ve struck the perfect balance between old and new.” “Just like the house, the garden was also a real project when we came here, but it too has been completely transformed,” continues Michelle. “It was nothing more than an overgrown jungle so we’ve cleared a lot of the plants and opened up the space to create a very pretty cottage garden that’s really easy to maintain. There’s a good-size area of lawn, we’ve used railway sleepers to create raised beds and right at the very end is an area that’s great for summer entertaining. The whole space is incredibly private and very peaceful; often the only sounds to be heard are the birds singing and the church bells ringing.” “I’d probably choose the lounge as my favourite room,” says Michelle. “It’s a really good size, but the low ceiling and open fire create such a cosy atmosphere.” “The house is so tucked away that a lot of people don’t know it even exists, and that’s one of the things I really love about it,” says Michelle. “It feels very secluded and yet it’s essentially slap, bang in the middle of the village so I can walk to the shop, any one of the four pubs, the Post Office or the school. We also have a really good bus service into Oxford that operates every fifteen or twenty minutes and it takes no time at all to drive into either Banbury or Bicester. All in all I think it’s a fantastic location.” “This is a real country cottage, but it has a lovely feeling of space,” says Michelle. “The bedrooms are all really good sizes, even the bathroom is very spacious so it’s a very comfortable family home.” “The house has lived up to all expectations and I will be very sad to see it go, but I’ll also be sad to leave the village,” says Michelle. “It’s a thriving place with a fabulous sense of community and we’ve made so many really good friends during our time here; it’s just that type of place.”* * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property.
