Old Town Americana Centennial Festival June 8th & 9th

A

LBUQUERQUE, NM- Next up in Old Town’s celebration of the New Mexico Centennial is a free public event on Friday, June 8th and Saturday, June 9th that celebrates all things “Americana.” The headliner for the event, the American blues-rock band, Indigenous, members of the Nakota Nation who grew up on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota, came to prominence in the late 1990s. The Native American band was originally comprised of two brothers, their sister and a cousin. Since those early days, the band has changed personnel and morphed into a nationally-known group with awards and records that appear on Billboard’s Top 10. They will perform at the Gazebo on Saturday from 3 - 3:45 and 4:15 - 5 p.m. The Americana Festival begins on Friday at 5 p.m. with performances at the Gazebo by the Squash Blossom Boys, followed by a 6 p.m. performance by BéBé La La featuring Alicia Ultan and Maryse Lapierre, and the Jaded Heart Duo. From 7 to 8 p.m. the band Breaking Blue closes the show with its special blues vibe. Saturday’s performances begin at 2 p.m. with a performance by Frank and James Chavez, followed by Indigenous. Kevin Morgan takes the stage from 3:45 - 4:15 p.m., after which Indigenous returns to close out the afternoon entertainment. The traditional, yet contemporary, Squash Blossom Boys bring together a mix of Old Time, Swing, and driving Bluegrass music. Versed in jazz improvisation and music arrangement, the band creates a unique sound that explores the roots and Boundaries of Americana. Bébé La La is a musical duo featuring singer-songwriter, guitarist, violist, Alicia Ultan (formerly of the award winning ‘twisted folk’ duo, Charmed) and singer-accordionist, Maryse Lapierre, originally from Quebec. The duo performs their original folk inspired songs as well as French ballads and a few cool covers thrown in, with their signature heavenly harmonies, rhythmic lilts and rich melodies in tow. The Jaded Heart Duo features singer-songwriter, Roger Jameson and violist-singer Alicia Ultan, who have played together since the days of the Jaded Heart Band, one of the staples of the Alibi Fall Crawls from the late 1990s into the early 2000s as well as frequent performers at Burt’s Tiki Lounge, The Launchpad, and many other area establishments. It all started for Breaking Blue in an apartment living room. Vocalist Chrystal Anderson had been composing lyrics for 15 years. When her words met Randy Martin’s banjo melodies, featured song” Crowded Room” was born, and went on to win the Santa Fe Bluegrass Festival’s songwriting contest, sponsored by the Southwest Picker’s Association.Their award-winning music will have you rummaging through photo albums, old yellowed letters, and recipe boxes, recalling memories of times gone by. The duo of Frank and James Chavez brings their performance of traditional New Mexico/Hispano folk music to the Gazebo stage. James is the leader of the well-known group Los Garrapatas. Kevin Morgan learned piano at 8, then guitar at the age of 16. He first teamed up as a teenager with Caleb Mannan to form the 1990’s alternative/shoegazer/pre-emo band Gettysburg. Shortly

after the duo returned from living in Nashville in 2001, they went separate geographical ways, and in 2005 he began performing solo around Spokane, Washington. C o m m e n ta r y Small Businesses: Add “Manage Online Presence” To Your To-Do List

S

mall- to midsized business (SMB) owners wear multiple hats, but the only one most ever wanted on their heads was that of “successful business owner.” However, today’s SMB owners typically manage countless functions that fall outside and can detract from their core products or services, including one they may not know is critical in today’s business landscape: managing their company’s online presence. Most SMB owners can’t rationalize investments that don’t boost their bottom lines, and many are unclear about whether being active online can grow their businesses. However, data suggests an online presence makes good business sense: According to Mediabistro, 50 percent of small-business owners have gained customers through social media. Meanwhile, consumers increasingly prefer businesses to communicate with them online, as opposed to one-direction, traditional marketing methods like direct mail. The combination of these trends presents a sizable challenge for the SMB owner: With so many hats and so little time, how does the small business optimize and manage its online presence? Consider these tips: • Keywords are key. SMBs should identify keywords that customers would utilize in an online search and incorporate them in their websites and their domains (e.g., www. raleighaccountingfirm.com), if possible. This approach increases the chances that the URL will rank high on search result lists.

• Get social. “Go where your customer is” has never been truer. According to The Nielsen Company, the U.S. Internet user averages three times more minutes on social networks and blogs than on e-mail. Smart SMBs are participating in social networking sites where customers frequent, including obvious choices like Twitter and Facebook and fast-growing sites like Pinterest, LinkedIn, Foursquare and Yelp. • Go ahead…ask. Because consumers place unparalleled trust in the opinions of other consumers, SMBs should ask satisfied customers to post reviews on social sites or write testimonials for their websites. Loyal customers will be happy to promote reviews and experiences via “share” buttons for Facebook and Twitter. • Allow someone else to wear the hat. It can be helpful to use a tool such as Brandify, which simplifies the building, evaluating and monitoring of an SMB’s online brand. SMB owners can log on to the Microsoftsponsored site quickly and for free to receive a score of their company’s online presence. Based

Rethink Snacking: Defend Your Day With Walnuts

N

inety percent of American adults snack daily and could be gaining valuable nutrition. A paper published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that smaller nutritious meals eaten throughout the day contribute significantly to the nutrient quality of the diet. The key is making snacking choices that are not “empty calories” but healthful options, providing important vitamins and minerals. Your body constantly defends against attacks from pollutants, free radicals and diseases, making it essential to fuel your body with nutrientdense foods. According to celebrated cookbook author Mollie Katzen, “Wise snacking is essential to good health, since snacking can help keep our bodies ready to tackle anything.” California Walnuts are a natural defender of the human body, and research funded by the California Walnut Commission suggests that they may promote heart health and help protect against cognitive decline and some types of cancer. Walnuts are an excellent way to keep your body fueled. Great snacking tips from Katzen: • Plan Ahead: Don’t get caught ravenous. Keep walnuts on hand; they make a great portable snack. • Measure Snack Portions: Measure a portion of your snack first and then put away the rest so you’re not tempted to overeat. Just a handful of walnuts (about one ounce) offers 2.5g of omega-3, along with protein, fiber and antioxidants. • Make Sure Your Snack is Balanced: A balanced minimeal should keep you satisfied; whole-food ingredients will fuel your body and defend your health. Try these vegan, glutenfree Blueberry-Walnut Snack

Bars, a favorite from Katzen. Chewy Blueberry-Walnut Snack Bars Nonstick spray 1 cup dried blueberries 3 cups additional dried fruit (mixed, per your taste) 1½ cups walnuts, chopped ¼ cup rice flour ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ cup agave nectar (or to taste) ¾ cup mashed silken tofu, soft or firm Preheat the oven to 350°F (325°F for a glass pan). Lightly spray an 8-inch-square pan with nonstick spray and line with parchment paper. Chop dried fruit into bitesized pieces and place in a medium bowl; add the walnuts. Sprinkle in the rice flour and salt, toss until combined. Spray a ¼-cup measure with nonstick spray before measuring the agave nectar (so it slides out easily!) then pour the nectar into the fruit and walnut mixture. Add the mashed tofu and mix with a spoon or your hands until everything is thoroughly combined. Spread the mixture into the prepared pan and bake in the center of the oven for 30 to 40 minutes or until brown around the edges and the top is dry to the touch. You can remove the pan from the oven at this point or, for a chewier result, turn off the oven and leave the pan in there for up to 40 minutes longer. Cool the pan for about 20 minutes before cutting the mixture into about a dozen small bars. Transfer bars to a cooling rack and let them sit an hour. (They’ll become chewy while “airing out” on the rack.) Store bars in a cookie tin at room temperature. If you’ll be keeping them for more than a few days, seal them in a heavy plastic bag and store in the refrigerator or freezer. Enjoy at any temperature. (They’re even good frozen.)

Green Your Vehicle Routine

F

or more “green” in your wallet as well as a greener environment, save money and energy with basic vehicle maintenance. Here are five ways you can do so: 1. Drive Green—Recognize that how you drive has a lot to do with fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your miles per gallon and increases wear and tear on your vehicle. Minimize unnecessary miles by combining errands. 2. Get a Tune-up—Regular tune-ups and maintenance and having clean air filters will help your car pollute less and burn less gas. With a proper tune-up, you can save 4 percent on the cost of gas and up to 40 percent by replacing a faulty oxygen sensor. Simply changing the car’s air filter can improve efficiency by 10 percent. 3. Lighten the Load—Get the junk out of the trunk and the stuff out of your car, with the exception of emergency items such as a spare tire, flares and a first-aid

kit. Extra items weigh the vehicle down and cause an increase in gas usage. 4. Tire Checks—According to the Car Care Council, around 2 billion gallons of gas a year could be saved if the tires on every American’s car were properly inflated. Optimal tire pressure for your vehicle is listed in the owner’s manual. Tires that are not properly inflated add rolling resistance that makes the engine work harder to move the vehicle. All this increases fuel costs as much as 3 to 5 cents per gallon and increases the risk of engine damage. 5. Gas Caps and Fill-up—Check your vehicle’s gas cap. Approximately 17 percent of vehicles on the road have loose, damaged or missing gas caps, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year. Topping off your gas tank when filling up your car can also release harmful vapors into the environment. “Vehicle owners who do their own maintenance should remember to recycle or properly dispose of fluids and other

vehicle components, including used motor oil, tires and batteries,” advises Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. More information about environmental awareness is included in the popular digital “Car Care Guide” that can be easily accessed through the council’s website at www.carcare.org/car-careguide. College Planning: Tips For Students And Parents

A

college education is one of the most important investments of time and money that students and their families will make. Workers with a bachelor’s degree earned 65 percent more, on average, than those with only a high school diploma, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Fortunately, there are steps to take now that can help make a college education a reality. If college is on the horizon for you or a family member, you probably need to think about how you’ll cover the costs. Understanding your scholarship, financial aid and student loan options will help you get started on the right foot. Prospective, new and current college students also need answers to questions such as how to select a major, what school is a good fit, and which housing options will best suit their personality, lifestyle and study habits. Tackling these questions can seem daunting, but students and their families have resources for finding answers thanks to friends, family, school guidance counselors and financial aid officers. Talking to other students and parents who have already gone through the process or are in the midst of it can help save time and energy. In fact, a new resource is available to help do just

that: Wells Fargo’s Online Community. It connects people with college-related questions with others who can help in developing a plan and getting answers. Here are a few things students and their families may want to discuss: Develop a budget: Paying for college involves a lot more than tuition and housing. Make an itemized list of monthly expenses such as cell phone and Internet service, food and school supplies to get a good estimate of your overall expenses. Create a plan: Young people should get a summer or after-school job, and then set up a savings and checking account to organize finances. Research financial aid: Check in on your financial aid options early and often. There are a number of steps to getting the best financial aid package for your needs. Track deadlines, so you’re not left scrambling. Career Education Assistance For A Competitive Job Market

E

ven with the U.S. unemployment rate high, technicians and skilled trade workers top the list of the hardest jobs to fill, according to a Manpower Group talent shortage survey. This gap in today’s competitive job market can be a great opportunity for those who are considering attending a trade or technical school over a traditional college or university. Specifically targeting this high-skilled worker need, one organization has introduced a Career Education Grant Program to provide a one-time $1,000 grant to members and their eligible dependents toward enrollment and attendance at an accredited trade or technical school. “Higher education provides a tremendous advantage toward success,” says Paul Pevsner, M.D., President of the Alliance for Affordable Services, “but the cost of postsecondary education continues to increase. That is why it is important for Alliance to offer members assistance in achieving their educational goals, regardless of the type of school they choose to attend.” The grant program is a welcome complement to the already successful Alliance Scholarship Program. Over $1.9

million in scholarship awards has helped more than 1,200 high school graduates and college students pursue undergraduate degrees since the scholarship program’s inception in 1996. The Alliance is dedicated to helping its members live better and save more. It leverages its strength in numbers to provide access to valuable benefits and services to meet the personal, professional and health care needs of over 75,000 members nationwide. Benefit availability is dependent on the package option chosen and the member’s place of residence and may be subject to change. For more information or to join, visit www. AffordableServices.org or call (800) 733-2242. The

annual grant application deadline is June 30.. (NAPSI)—
