New Mexican Appointed Trustee of the Prado Museum Foundation Spanish Colonial Arts Society

T

he Spanish Colonial Arts Society announced that their Board President, Jim Long, was appointed as an International Trustee of the Prado Museum Foundation in Madrid, Spain on October 18, 2012. The official appointment was made by Carlos Zurita, Duque de Soria (Duke of Soria), who is the brother-in-law of the King Juan Carlos I. Carlos Emilio Juan Zurita y Delgado, Duke of Soria, Duke of Hernani, Grandee of Spain (born Málaga, 9 October 1943), is the husband of Infanta Margarita of Spain, the younger sister of King Juan Carlos of Spain. As husband of the 2nd Duchess of Hernani and Duchess of Soria, Zurita is styled as His Excellency The Duke of Soria and Hernani. The Duke of Soria is President of the Spanish Federation of the Museums Friends Associations and President of the Friends of Prado Museum Foundation. He also is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine. Long is a prominent New Mexico businessman. Among his many business ventures, one he is most proud of is the Heritage Hotels and Resorts. He credits his appointment to two things, his long time friendship with past US Ambassador to Spain, Edward Romero, and Jim’s involvement with the Spanish Colonial Arts Society in Santa Fe. The Society has the only museum in the United States that is dedicated exclusively to Spanish colonial art, and the Society presents the largest and oldest Spanish Market in the country, 2013 will see the 62nd annual Market. The Museo del Prado is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. The Prado was founded 200 years old and is considered one of the finest in the world. The museum exhibits attract 3 million visitors per year and the Foundation has 15,000 supporters. There are currently 70 trustees representing 15 countries, with only four of them from the United States. The Prado features one of the world’s finest collections of European art, from the 12th century to the early 19th century, based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art. Founded as a museum of paintings and sculpture, it also contains important collections of other types of works. A new, recently

opened wing enlarged the display area by about 400 paintings, and it is currently used mainly for temporary expositions. The Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world, and it is considered to be among the greatest museums of art. The large numbers of works by Velázquez and Francisco de Goya (the artist more extensively represented in the collection), Titian, Rubens and Bosch are among the highlights of the collection. The collection currently comprises around 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings, in addition to a large number of other works of art and historic documents. By 2012 the Museum will be displaying about 1300 works in the main buildings, while around 3,100 works are on temporary loan to various museums and official institutions. The remainder of the collection is in storage.

Selective Service: A Young Man’s Civic Duty

M

any believe that part of being an adult is doing your civic duty. For some, this involves volunteering, paying taxes or serving on a jury. For young men, it includes registering with the Selective Service when they turn 18. The law requires virtually all male U.S. citizens and immigrants to register with the Selective Service System. To be in full compliance with the law, men turning 18 are required to register during the period of time beginning 30 days before until 30 days after their 18th birthday. Those who register are eligible for federal student aid, most federal jobs and federal job training. Male noncitizens living in the U.S. who are 18 through 25 must register to remain eligible for citizenship. Many states require registration for a driver’s license. Failure to register can result in fines and possibly a prison sentence. Plus, those who do not register are not eligible for student aid or job training. To learn more, visit www.sss.gov. --NAPSI

Starting Your Own Business—An Alternative To The Job Search

W

hile being laid off or “downsized” can be a traumatic time for anyone, especially in a tight job market, it could also be an opportunity to change your career direction. One popular alternative is to start your own business. After all, how many of us dream of “being our own boss” and controlling our own destiny? But is starting your own business right for you? There are four key questions you will need to ask yourself before making the transition from worker to entrepreneur: • What sets you apart? According to CNN, there are nearly 6 million small businesses in the U.S. What skills are you able to perform, or what products are you able to produce that will set you apart and make you better than the rest? It is vital that you do your research to see how saturated this particular segment of the market is. • What skills are you lacking? When you start your own business, you become responsible for every aspect. Do you know how to write a business plan, analyze profit margins and set prices? Do you know the regulations governing your industry? What tax implications do you need to understand? Does your industry require particular certifications? You may need to consider additional education, whether it be a certificate or a full academic degree. Speak with other small-business owners; ask them if there is education they wish they had pursued before

starting out. • How are you going to pay for this? Consider all your expenses. Will you operate your business out of your home or will you need a physical office space? Will you be a sole proprietor or hiring contractors and employees? What types of insurance and precautionary measures are necessary? It is crucial to keep in mind the amount of time it takes to build a customer base; it is likely that you will be operating at a loss for the first couple years. Do you plan on taking out a loan or seeking investors? Also, consider the amount of risk involved-is there another steady income in your household or is this business the sole income? • Where can you seek help? Many small businesses thrive by helping each other out. If you are not willing to get out there and talk up your business, entrepreneurship is probably not for you. Work with your local chamber of commerce and small-business administration; they provide resources for promoting your business and networking and serve as excellent resources for the inevitable bevy of questions you will have along the way. Most communities have entrepreneur groups that assist with strategic planning, securing funding and promotion. Many colleges and universities also offer similar opportunities. “Our Center for Entrepreneurship and Market Capitalism works with business owners for the good of the entire business community,” said Dr.

Protect Your Family During Cold And Flu Season

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 22 million school days are lost annually due to the common cold—but a little care can help you protect your family. Most parents have faced this difficult scenario at some point: Your child comes home from school with a cold or, worse, the flu. Soon enough, you have it, too. Flash forward two weeks and some form of a cold or the flu has made it through the ranks of your entire family. While there’s no surefire way to completely prevent these viruses, there are simple solutions to help keep your family healthy during cold and flu season. Here, Kevin Ronneberg, M.D., associate medical director, Target, offers his flu-proof tips: Get vaccinated. Protect yourself and your family by getting vaccinated. Prevention is the key to staying healthy during cold and flu season. Disinfect your home. Keep your house clean and germ-free by regularly wiping down surfaces and high hand-traffic areas with a gentle yet effective cleaning solution that’s nontoxic and safe for pets and young children. Clean up after playtime. Avoid spreading the germs your kids may have picked

up while sharing toys by washing their hands immediately following playtime. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay hydrated. Dehydration doesn’t just occur during hot weather. Cold weather and hot and dry buildings promote dehydration, too. Dehydration can leave your body more susceptible to common colds and the flu, so drink up. Get up and go. During moderate exercise, immune cells circulate more quickly through the body and increase their ability to kill bacteria and viruses. Exercising on a daily basis also builds your immunity over time. Think twice before you share. Avoid sharing food, drinks, utensils or lip gloss. Germs can easily carry from one person to the other. Even if you feel well, flu symptoms can take one to three days to appear following exposure—you may be spreading illness and not even know it. Cover up that cough. Help prevent the spread of viruses by teaching your kids to cough or sneeze into the crook of their arm, sleeve or inside of their jacket or sweater. If you think the flu is something to sneeze at, think again. The flu causes more than 200,000 hospitalizations annually, with more than 20,000 of those being chil-

dren. Protect your family and get vaccinated this cold and flu season. Flu vaccines are available now at any Target Pharmacy, with no appointment necessary.

Boil Water Advisory: Think Before You Drink

T

he power goes out. There is construction in your neighborhood. A flood strikes. A water main cracks. Each of these can cause a disruption in the flow of water to your home. This disruption can affect the quality of your water for drinking, cooking and household chores. In these instances, Boil Water Advisories are issued to ensure consumers take proper precautions to make sure water is safe to drink. Boil Water Advisories do not mean that water is contaminated, but rather that it could be tainted. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention work to ensure consumers only use water that has been properly disinfected for drinking, cooking, cleaning dishes or for personal hygiene during a Boil Water Advisory. Follow these safety tips until the Boil Water Advisory has been lifted: • Drink bottled water. Drink water from a source you know wasn’t affected by a water main, such as water from a bottled water cooler or single-use bottled water. You may want to contact a local bottled water delivery service to quickly get access to three- or five-gallon jugs of water. • Boil water to disinfect. This is the best method for ensuring drinking water is disinfected. Boil water for one minute, let it cool and store it in clean, covered containers. Boiling will kill any disease-causing organisms and provide you with clean, potable water. • Use household products. If you cannot boil your water, an alternative is to use unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to sanitize the water. Simply add ⅛ teaspoon (or eight drops) of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach for each gallon of water. Stir well and let it stand for 30 minutes before use. • Filter cloudy or murky water. Look at the appearance of your water in a clear glass. If it looks discolored or murky, you may want to filter it and disinfect it. You can create a very basic filter using a clean cloth, a coffee filter or a paper towel. However, it will still need to be disinfected.

• Call your Culligan Man. If your neighborhood or community is under a Boil Water Advisory, make sure to follow sanitizing procedures for water softeners and drinking water systems installed in your home. You can find these procedures outlined in your Culligan product owner’s manuals. It is also important to call your local Culligan Dealer. Your local Culligan Man can answer any questions about the quality and safety of your water, availability of bottled water services and what steps to take to address your home’s water treatment system.
