A

LBUQUERQUE, NM- Annular Solar Eclipse: A rare annular solar eclipse is happening on May 20th, and Albuquerque has been identified as one of the best locations in its path for viewing the cosmic phenomenon. The Balloon Museum is offering the public an opportunity to view the eclipse-which at its center point creates the “ring of fire” around the sun as the moon’s shadow fills the entire surface of the sun’s center-from the beautiful museum and grounds that offer majestic mountain views, soaring spaces and fascinating exhibits that celebrate the history, art, culture, science and sport of lighter-than-air flight. On Sunday, May 20th, from 4 - 10:30 p.m. crowds that include professional and amateur astronomers as well as the general public will gather for the opportunity to view the sun’s disappearance through the generous participation of The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS). The all-volunteer group will provide telescopes fitted with solar filters that will be projected on LCD screens inside the Museum. Everyone should be aware that it is incredibly dangerous to view the sun directly, as major permanent damage to the retina will occur. Because the eye does not have nerves, pain will not be felt until the damage is complete. Volunteers will roam the museum and grounds reminding all attendees that they must use special solar glasses or create a pinhole camera to view the eclipse directly. Solar glasses will be distributed to visitors free of charge (with regular admission) while supplies last. Materials to make pinhole cameras and project the eclipse will also be available. The Solar Eclipse event will include live music, food and beverages available for purchase, children’s activities that include interactive learning, crafts, jumpers, face painting and a climbing wall. The movie “Contact” will also be screened at 8:30 p.m. It was filmed at the Very Large Array near Socorro and features Jodi Foster as a scientist trying to make contact with possible life elsewhere in the Universe. All activities are included with regular museum admission. Parking is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs and/or blankets as seating is limited. Transit of Venus: If one major cosmic event isn’t enough for you, on Tuesday, June 5th there is another. Twice in every century the planet Venus crosses the face of the sun, creating a small black dot that slowly moves from side to side over a period of approximately 4.5 hours. Because the transit cannot be seen without significant magnification, TAAS is working with the Museum to provide telescopic images that will be projected on a large LCD screen so that visitors can check in regularly to see the planet’s progress. In addition to the view of the transit from Albuquerque, another large screen will feature live video from Hawaii courtesy of NASA. The Transit of Venus will take place between 4 and approximately 8:30 p.m. There will also be entertainment including the Albuquerque Concert Band from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. performing a John Philip Sousa composition, “Transit of Venus March,” written in 1883 to celebrate the 1882 transit of Venus. The all-volunteer organization features over 80 players representing a wide range of age, ability and background. This year from June 5th through August 8th the band will also perform concerts on alternate Wednesday evenings at the Balloon Museum, courtesy of the City of Albuquerque’s Cultural Services Department. Between 5:30 and 6 p.m., Peter Cuneo will speak about “Telescopes and Balloons” as part the Balloon Museum’s programming during

the Transit of Venus. Cuneo, a retired optical engineer with Lockheed Martin, is a celebrated gas and hot air balloon pilot and is an authority on the history of ballooning. The centerpiece of the Balloon Museum’s “Space and Science” displays is the Office of Naval Research Strato-Lab gondola. On its fourth ascension the Strato-Lab carried a 16” telescope, part of a spectroscope system, mounted on top of the gondola. The objective of the flight was to examine the atmosphere of Venus for the presence of water vapor. At 6 p.m. the New Mexico Philharmonic will take the stage to perform The Planets, Op. 32, a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. With the exception of Earth, which is not observed in astrological practice, all the planets are represented. Conducted by Oriol Sans, the orchestral performance will open with John Williams’ Star Wars Suite and E.T. The Extra-terrestrial Suite to offer a dramatic element to the celestial event. The Cooperage will offer a delicious menu to enhance the evening: gourmet burgers, sandwiches, salads and Brick Oven Pizza, plus desserts. A cash bar will be available for the over-21 crowd. The Museum will remain open for another half-hour following the concert’s end at 8 p.m. to allow visitors to view the fascinating exhibits prior to leaving. Admission to the Transit viewing and concert is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and children 12 and under are free.

C o m m e n ta r y Consumers Spending More In 2012 On Leisure And Entertainment

N

ew data from a major financial institution revealed that many Americans are enjoying themselves more in 2012. According to the Chase Freedom Lifestyle Index, a barometer of consumer trends based on aggregated Chase Freedom cardmember spending data, consumers are spending more on leisure activities and entertainment this year compared to the first quarter of 2011. The data shows that in the first quarter of 2012: • Spending at movie theaters increased by 24 percent, while theme parks saw a 21 percent increase compared to 2011. • Spending at recreation facilities, such as golf courses, ski resorts and campgrounds, rose by 7 percent compared to the first quarter of last year. Additionally, based on last year’s data, celebrations of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduations are driving springtime spending on gifts and consumer wish list items, such as flowers, jewelry and electronics. Between April and May of 2011: • Spending on flowers increased by 92 percent—although men spend nearly twice as much as women on flowers on Valentine’s Day, both spend roughly the same on bouquets and blossoms in May. • Spending on jewelry increased by 28 percent between April and May 2011. States in the Northeast drove the biggest increase, with 36 percent. • Total consumer electronics spending increased 21 percent nationwide, with a larger increase of 28 percent in the West.

To help you get in on the good times, consider these money-saving tips when you make a purchase in one of these popular categories: • Shop electronics retailers on Sundays for the best deals on consumer electronics. • Take advantage of 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 spent at movie theaters and grocery stores, now through June 30 with a Chase Freedom card. • Earn up to 15 extra points for every dollar spent on flowers from retailers such as ProFlowers, KaBloom and 1-800-Flowers.com through Chase Ultimate Rewards. Chase Freedom Cardmembers can earn 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases at gas stations and restaurants from July through September, and on accommodations purchased directly from the hotels and tickets purchased directly from the airlines and at Best Buy and Kohl’s from October through December. Cardmembers can activate 5 percent cash back online, over the phone, via text

Studies Prove Purified Dead Sea Salts Provide Highly Effective Relief

an’t breathe? Headaches or stuffy nose? Cold? Flu? Chances are, it’s allergies. In fact, a growing number of people—50 million in the United States—suffer from allergies, which doctors agree can be debilitating. According to Dr. Scott Cordray, a board-certified otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon and founder of LAVI Dead Sea Sinus Solutions, allergies are more than an annoyance. “They can make people feel sick and keep them from going to work or school,” he said. “Allergies can take a dramatic toll and lead to even worse diseases.” Often confused with cough, cold or flu, allergies are the fifth-leading chronic disease in the U.S. and account for nearly $8 billion in health care spending. Taking Control The good news is there’s hope. “There are things you can do to take control,” said Cordray. “Minimize exposure—wear a mask, for example, to protect yourself from pollen and dust. Practice good nasal hygiene by regularly using nasal moisturizers or sinus wash. And finally, treat the symptoms.” Doctors frequently prescribe nasal steroids or other medicated solutions that offer temporary relief, but these come with unwanted, potentially dangerous side effects. Natural solutions—most made with sodium chloride (table or sea salt)--may provide

C

some relief, but don’t reduce swelling or congestion like medicated alternatives. A Scientifically Proven, All-Natural Alternative Now, two internationally recognized medical journals cite a natural, powerful alternative using Dead Sea salts, which—unlike other salts that are nearly 100 percent sodium—are rich in magnesium and potassium, bringing highly effective relief to those who suffer. According to clinical studies published in the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology and The Laryngoscope, Dead Sea salts are superior to other salts in preventing and treating allergy and other chronic sinus symptoms and as effective as topical nasal steroids in reducing swelling and congestion. Purified Dead Sea salts offer the benefits of medicated solutions without the potential side effects. That makes it helpful for anyone— especially those for whom prescription or medicated products may not be an option, including cancer patients, older Americans or those undergoing postoperative care. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, Dead Sea salts have a long history of effectively treating skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis. This same anti-inflammatory effect is now proving beneficial in treating allergy symptoms and related illnesses.

Conserve Energy Even When You’re Not At Home

ool news for anyone who has ever wanted to remotely heat up the house at night on the way home after a long day at work or cool it down on the way home from a long vacation: You may soon be able to do just that. Thanks to a new technology breakthrough, you can now go green with a new thermostat and mobile app that lets you adjust your thermostat settings even when you’re not home. And it’s just as easy as when you’re at home because the mobile app looks just like your thermostat screen. What’s more, you also can check your home energy use from your mobile device and adjust the programming from virtually anywhere there is Internet or cellular access. You can even text family members at home by sending messages right to the thermostat screen. Your thermostat also can act like a digital picture frame. You can easily upload photos of your kids, pets or vacations. You can run a single photo as a screen saver or up to 100 photos as a slide show. Your thermostat will even tell you when your system needs service. And when you are home, but it’s not convenient to get up to adjust the thermostat settings, you can do it from your smartphone or tablet.

Beyond adjusting your thermostat remotely for energy savings, here are more tips for conserving energy costs when you’re on the go. • As the days get cooler, closing your curtains or blinds at dusk will help stop heat from escaping through windows. When the days get warmer, keeping the curtains or blinds closed in the morning will help keep out hot daytime sun. • The most common household appliances— phone chargers, televisions, computer monitors and DVD players—use valuable energy even when turned off. Unplug them when you’re not home to reduce your energy use and your monthly bill. • Clean or replace filters on furnaces and air conditioners once a month or as recommended. • Consider a programmable

thermostat with a mobile app so you can remotely control energy consumption from anywhere by using your smartphone or tablet. For more tips and information about this new ColorTouch connected thermostat, visit Venstar at www.venstar.com. (NAPSI)—
