Tourism Department Encourages New Mexicans to Celebrate Independence Day Safely
T
he New Mexico Tourism Department is encouraging all New Mexicans and their visitors to celebrate this Fourth of July weekend safely by seeking alternatives to setting off of backyard fireworks. “New Mexico’s Independence Day weekend calendar is filled with safe and exciting events,” said Monique Jacobson, Secretary of the New Mexico Tourism Department. “This is also a great time to create new family traditions. My family likes to gather for banana splits for breakfast on the morning of the Fourth. Why not enjoy your ice cream at one of our 33 state parks still open and visit a stop or two along our Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail on your way home? We can exercise caution and still have a great time this weekend.” Leading the list of family getaway contenders are Rio Rancho’s eighth annual Pork & Brew BBQ State Championships- named one of the best 100 events in the nation by the American Bus Association – at the Santa Ana Star Center. Activities include live entertainment, fun jumps, pig races, kids’ corral, and, of course, food galore. With more than 30,000 in attendance last year, Pork & Brew has become one of the largest two-day events in New Mexico. And if you haven’t traveled to Roswell for the annual UFO Festival, your timing could not be better. You know the legend; now experience the fun. The Roswell Incident is now celebrated with the annual Roswell UFO Festival, which annually attracts doubters, believers, scholars, scientists, authors, astronauts, tourists and children of all ages – from this world and beyond - to this small Southeastern New Mexico city in search of a little truth and a whole lot of fun, foolishness and entertainment. Beware of Business Credit Cards
T
he Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure (CARD) Act of 2009 was supposed to protect consumers from changing interest rates, unreasonable fees and the insecurity from not knowing from one month to the next what new fees and penalties the creditcard companies would come up with. The Pew Charitable Trusts, a branch of the nonpartisan, civic-minded Pew Research Center, has released a Safe Credit Cards Project report warning about the ways credit-card companies are getting around the rules. To get around the restrictions of the CARD Act, credit-card companies have simply changed the name of the cards they’re issuing. They’re now
Dollars & Sense by David Uffington called “business” or “corporate” credit cards. Business credit cards were never intended to be covered by the act, so none of the new rules apply. Far too many consumers have been taken in, assuming they’re protected when they’re not. Getting one of these cards isn’t hard: Business or commercial cards are being promoted not only to businesses and corporations, but to consumers, just as the regular consumer cards were. According to the Pew report, some 10 million offers for business credit cards are sent out every month. Here are some comparisons, with “Protected” indicating the coverage of personal credit cards under the Act. Protected: Terms cannot change during
the first year, and 45 days notice must be given before terms change. Business: Terms can change at any time. Protected: Penalty interest rates cannot be applied to existing balances. Business: Penalty interest rates can be applied at any time, effective immediately, with no notice, to any balance. Protected: Penalty fees must be reasonable, and cannot exceed the violation itself. Business: Penalty fees are unrestricted. Protected: Payments over the minimum must be applied to the highest rate balance first. Business: Payment may be applied to
lowest rate balances, which lets highrate balances accrue interest. If you receive a mailing or application offering one of these credit cards, read the fine print -- twice. Go online a pull up a copy of the CARD Act and compare item for item what your new card would offer versus the protections of regular cards. Remember: With business credit cards, your interest rate could change overnight, and you can’t do a thing about it -- except pay the debt. ow long do you expect to live? These days, we hear more and more about unprecedented gains in longevity. In fact, IRS tables show that a 65-year old today can expect, on average, to live to age 86. Many will live much longer than that. The prospect of living a longer life is positive news – assuming you have the retirement income you need to afford the lifestyle you want. The problem is few Americans today may be able to count on pension plans and Social Security to support them fully in retirement; most will have to come up with another way to help ensure financial security. Maximum opportunity to build your savings Almost anyone can invest in an annuity– there are no income tests or other criteria
to purchase a non qualified contract. There are also no annual IRS contribution limits, as with IRAs and employer-sponsored plans. This means you can contribute as much or as little as you like in any given year within the issuing company’s guidelines What’s more, your contributions can come from any source, not just earned income (as is required with an IRA or qualified retirement plan); you can use other savings, assets from the sale of a business, a lump-sum inheritance, or other resources to fund your annuity contract. With an annuity, you’re not required to start taking distributions from your account at age 70 ½ (the required minimum distribution age for IRAs and 401(k) plans). As with other retirement savings vehicles, if you take a withdrawal from an annuity prior to age 59 ½, your distribution may be subject to contractual withdrawal charges, income taxes, or a 10 percent IRS early withdrawal penalty. Benefits you can plan on Many annuities provide guarantees that can give you a sense of certainty, especially in today’s uncertain markets. Fixed, deferred annuities offer a fixed rate of interest. It’s important to remember that all guarantees in annuities are backed solely by the claimspaying ability of the issuer.

(NAPS)—Companies that offer college tuition assistance provide a valuable perk for employees—but the benefit works both ways. Over 70 percent of workers participating in employer tuition assistance programs say there is a strong personal and professional value, and employers also win when employees go back to school. Companies can boost workers’ engagement and cultivate a workforce that can survive downturns and excel when the economy picks up. Researchers at the University of Phoenix Research Institute surveyed more than 6,700 employees in diverse industries about the aspects of tuition assistance they found most valuable. The results, published in “Bundled Value: Working Learners’ Perceptions of Tuition Benefit Programs,” show that participants believed tuition assistance positively influenced their education, finances, careers and lives. Employers should not just focus on economic benefits, the study suggests, but workplace-oriented outcomes such as improved productivity, retention and promotability.
