Albuquerque Tourism Industry Celebrates National Travel & Tourism Week ALBUQUERQUE, NM (May 4th, 2011)– The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) celebrated a successful year in tourism at our 30th Annual Luncheon today. Nearly 350 industry professionals came together to celebrate travel and tourism with presentations by Mayor Richard J. Berry, City Council President Don Harris and Dale Lockett, ACVB President/CEO. The luncheon kicks off National Travel & Tourism Week in Albuquerque. The national celebration has taken place since 1984 with events across the country to champion the power of travel. It was established as National Tourism Week when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May. Tourism is a $1.3 trillion industry in America. Travel and tourism in Albuquerque has a huge impact on our city: • Albuquerque’s second largest private industry generating more than $2 billion annually • Brings approximately 3 million visitors to Albuquerque each year • Produces over $30.7 million in local taxes annually • Employs nearly 25,000 people in Albuquerque • Conventions/meetings generate more than $65 million in direct spending

In addition to the ACVB Annual Luncheon and the Unsung Heroes of Tourism recognition, the National Train Day event will take place downtown to kick off National Travel & Tourism Week. The Rio Metro Regional Transit district will host the first ever National Train Day on Saturday, May 7th at the Alvarado Transportation Center in Downtown Albuquerque from 1-5pm with entertainment and educational activities.

Our local National Travel & Tourism Week celebration includes the Unsung Heroes of Tourism program. The Albuquerque 311 Citizen Contact Center was recognized as the 2011 Unsung Heroes of Tourism. The 311 team is relied upon to provide locals, as well as visitors, with accurate information about bus routes, City attractions, events, and lodging by responding to over 1 million in-bound calls annually. The 311 team is active during large events such as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta as well. A portion of the team was recognized at ACVB’s Annual Luncheon today and the entire contact center team will be honored on Thursday, May 12th. This year’s class of Unsung Heroes of Tourism marks the 12th annual recognition, which honors a local community group that has made significant contributions to the city’s tourism industry.

Spring Savings Dollars & Sense by David Uffington

Spring is a great time to do repairs and preventative maintenance on your vehicle and home, and to save money in other ways, too. Here are some ideas: Car maintenance: If you live in a snow area, run your vehicle through a car wash that includes under-carriage spray to remove road salts and avoid corrosion. Schedule a tune-up and oil change. Make sure fluids are topped off and tires are at the right air pressure. Invest in a small tube of car paint (get this from your dealer for an accurate match) to cover any dings or scrapes. House: Compare heating bills from this recent winter and winters past. While the prices might have changed,

you can compare your actual usage. If your heat usage went up this winter, consider why. If you have an older home, you might be in line for more attic insulation before next winter. While up in the attic to check insulation depth, use a flashlight to look at the plywood roofing, and around vents and eaves: Are there any signs of water leaks? If you had window drafts, you might find sales on new windows over the summer. At the very least, put caulking on your list of things to do. Walk around the house and check for any winter damage to siding and the roof. Don’t forget the foundation. If you need repair work you can’t do yourself,

get estimates early, as summer is the busiest construction season. Children: Scout charity and thrift shops for children’s summer play clothes. If you find bargains on items they can wear to school in the fall (and if you’re sure of sizes), select a few outfits to get them started and avoid last-minute shopping panic. Local summer day camps can be an economical way to let your children experience camp without going too far from home. Investigate camps sponsored by the YMCA and local church and youth groups. Inquire about low-income scholarships, if you qualify, and sign up early before all the

slots are filled. If you’re hoping for a family vacation this year, check a new book called “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Best Family Destinations.” In spite of the title, the publication is packed with information on vacation spots in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, including beaches, outdoor adventures, historical sites, amusement parks and much more. You Can Help Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger (NAPSI)—There’s hopeful news for the more than 50 million Americans who struggle with hunger. On Saturday, May 14, thousands of Postal Service letter carriers will be helping to “Stamp Out Hunger.” Here’s how you can join with millions of other Americans to help: Simply leave donations of non- perishable food items, such as canned soup, canned meats and fish, canned vegetables and fruit, as well as pasta and rice, next to your mailbox before the time of your regular mail delivery. Letter carriers will do the rest, collecting the donations and delivering them to food banks and pantries in the community. If you don’t have a mailbox, you can leave your donation on the porch. Also, a number of metropolitan post offices across the country have special collection boxes at their offices. Contact your local post office to find out how you can help. “With hunger striking many needy Americans recently, including working families, children and the elderly, help is needed now more than ever before,” says Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

Supporting the letter carriers in their effort to Stamp Out Hunger is entertainer/entrepreneur and host of “America’s Got Talent,” Nick Cannon. Growing up, Cannon and his family turned to their local food pantry for help during tough times and experienced firsthand the importance of efforts to feedAmerica’s hungry. “Helping your neighbors in need is easy,” says Cannon in a public service announcement that emphasizes how the demand for food assistance has never been greater and how easy it is to participate in this year’s drive. “Leave your donations at your mailbox and your letter carrier will do the rest.” Now in its 19th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, with more than 1 billion pounds of food donated since its inception in 1993. Last year the letter carriers collected a record total of more than 77.1 million pounds of food from generous Americans, surpassing the previous record of 73.4 million pounds collected in 2009. The Postal Service joins the National Association of Letter Carriers, Campbell Soup Company and Feeding America to conduct the Stamp Out Hunger initiative.

C o m m e n ta r y HER MONEY, HER INVESTMENTS Provided By: Timo Haugen, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network

Faced with student loans and with an eye toward owning a new car or a first home, it’s not surprising that many twenty-something women think saving for “old age” can wait for just that, an older age. But the need is more urgent. Any woman who wants to secure her future needs to begin today by taking time to consider investments and retirement planning. Historically, the financial services industry has been slow to view women as viable customers, preferring to target the traditional male investor. But, this mindset is changing with more companies recognizing the role women play in making financial decisions. Getting on track for saving Even though more women than ever are working and building their financial independence, many still depend on their husband’s income and investment expertise for their financial well-being. However, divorce or death can quickly change that situation. A discouraging thought since it’s widely known that about half of all U.S. marriages end in divorce. The average woman can expect to live to age 80.2, which is 6.8 years longer than a man.1 Add to that the fact that in our society today, experts say, for the first time, more women are living without a husband than with one.2 Smart choices for the future No matter your age, here are basic steps for building a financial strategy that will move you closer to self-reliance:

1. Establishing solid goals. Be it a dream home on a lake or a comfortable condo in the city, concrete objectives give you something tangible to strive for and make it easier to assign a price tag to goals. Establish your goals, set a time frame, list the steps you need to get there, and implement your plan. Start now. 2. Assessing your financial position. Take a critical look at finances, especially with regard to life goals. Consider asking an objective outside financial professional for help in calculating where you stand. Know what investments you have and how much they are worth. Estimate how much you will have saved by retirement and how long that will last you based on your lifestyle. 3. Seek out good financial guidance. Look for information wherever available and never hesitate to ask questions. 4. Create a solid portfolio. Young investors should start as soon as possible to research financial information and start saving. Even seemingly small amounts of saving now can help build future stability and eventual wealth. 5. Team up with a financial professional you can trust. Women who are unfamiliar with the financial products available should team up with a financial professional they can trust. For both women and men, it pays to create a clear vision of one’s financial future; both in terms of a better-focused, less stressful today and a comfortable, more prosperous tomorrow. 1.
