Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition: Explores African-Native American Identity Opens at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Albuquerque, NM (3/30/11) -- The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center will open the Smithsonian traveling exhibition “IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas” focusing on the seldom-viewed history and complex lives of people of dual African and Native American ancestry. “This exhibition brings forth an obscure topic that in reality, has its roots in all of our lives and that is, that the blending of races has always taken place among the Native and African American peoples.” said Ron Solimon, President/CEO of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. “It challenges us all to discover who we really are so that it can shape who we can become.” Through the themes of policy, community, creative resistance and lifestyles, the exhibition tells stories of cultural integration and diffusion as well as the struggle to define and preserve identity. “IndiVisible,” produced by the National Museum of the American Indian in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), will be on view through September 24, 2011 and then will continue to travel to museums around the nation. “The topic of African-Americans is one that touches a great number of individuals through family histories, tribal histories and personal identities,” said Kevin Gover (Pawnee), director of the National Museum of the American Indian. “We find commonalities in our shared past of genocide, alienation from our ancestral homelands, and the exhibition acknowledges the strength and resilience we recognize in one another today.” “We are proud to have contributed to this important and thoughtful exhibition,” said Lonnie Bunch, director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. African American oral tradition is full of stories about ‘Black Indians,’ with many black families claiming Indian blood.” The exhibition was curated by leading scholars, educators and community leaders including Gabrielle Tayac, (Piscataway), Robert Keith Collins, (African-Choctaw descent), Angela Gonzales (Hopi), Judy Kerèsz, Penny Gamble-Williams (Chappaquiddick Wampanoag) and Thunder Williams (Afro-Carib). African-Native Americans from across North America share their perspectives in a 10-minute video in the exhibition. Additional programming includes a schedule of films about AfricanNative Americans and a panel discussion an April 27th titled, “The Painted Heart: Beauty and Diversity in African-Native American Lives.” Panelists include Hakim Bellamy, Social and Community Programs Coordinator, NM State Office of African American Affairs; Richard Luarkie, Governor of Laguna Pueblo and Tom Lark, Curator, African American Performing Arts Center. This event is from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the Avanyu Gallery with an admission of $5 general public; $3 IPCC members. The Links, Incorporated is a primary program collaborator for this exhibition. The Links, Inc. was founded in 1946, and is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. In addition to Links, the National Council of Negro Women is also partial sponsor of this exhibition. Dr. Harold Bailey, Executive Director for the Office of African American

Affairs with the State of New Mexico said, “This exhibition will educate the public about the connection between Native and African American peoples. We should not only embrace our heritage and maintain this historical and cultural relationship, but add to it.” The accompanying exhibition book, “IndiVisible: African-Native American Lives in the Americas’ edited by Tayac, features 27 essays from authors across the hemisphere sharing first-person accounts of struggle, adaptation and survival and examines such diverse subjects as contemporary art, the Cherokee Freedmen issue and the evolution of jazz and blues. The richly illustrated 256-page book is available online at www.americanindian.si.edu/exhitions/indivisible and at Shumakolowa Gifts in the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. An online version of the exhibition and full national tour schedule are available at www.americanindian.si.edu/ exhibitions/indivisible. Support for the exhibition is provided by the Akaloa Resource Foundation and the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is an institution of living cultures dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of the life, languages, literature, history and arts of the Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established by an act of Congress in 2003, and will be erected on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Currently, during the pre-building phase, the museum is presenting exhibitions, producing publications, hosting public events and offering an array of interactive programs and educational resources at the museum on the Web at www.nmaahc.si.edu.

10 Items To Put On Your Home Spring Cleaning List (NAPS)—The changing seasons are a reminder that it’s time to check around the house to make sure things are operating properly and safely. Here are 10 often overlooked tasks to add to your home spring cleaning list. 1. Defrost the freezer: Ice buildup makes freezers less efficient and takes up space. Throw away out-of-date or freezer-burnt food. 2. Update the first-aid kit: Replace missing supplies and update emergency contact information, including the poison control center. 3. Donate old clothes: Clean out closets and take unused clothes to a clothing donation center. 4. Clean up the computer: Delete old files and e-mails, organize documents and photos into folders and run a virus scan. 5. Clean the chimney: Hire a chimney sweep to clear the flue and perform an inspection. 6. Caulk and weather strip: Keep rain from seeping in and cooled or heated air from seeping out by caulking around windows and

10. Check batteries: There are 21 batteryoperated devices in the average home—from flashlights to smoke detectors to cordless phones. Test each device and replace the batteries with fresh ones.

doors. 7. Drain the hot water heater: Check for rust and remove sediment that may have collected at the bottom of your hot water heater. 8. Call the termite inspector: Termites establish new colonies every spring, so get a professional inspection of your home. 9. Review your family emergency plan: Have an established plan in case of fire or other emergency. Make sure windows and other escapes are easy to open from the inside.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 3,000 people in the United States lose their lives in residential fires every year. You should test smoke alarms once a month and change the batteries inside at least twice a year. Also replace smoke alarm batteries if the detector emits a warning sound, such as chirping or beeping. Make sure there’s at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home, particularly inside or near sleeping areas. To help householders, Interstate Batteries makes 16,000 different kinds of batteries for powering cars, laptops and everything in between. The company’s All Battery Centers promise to have, find or build the right battery for just about any gadget around your home. For more information, visit : www.interstatebatteries.com.

A Smartphone Can Be A Smart Way To Get Organized (NAPS)—Any time of year can be the right time to take a self-inventory and identify changes we would like to make. For some, it’s embracing a healthier diet; for others, it’s a new workout routine or balancing their checkbook. The good news is that with the latest smartphone technology, chances are there really is an app for that—and possibly even on a 4G system. Since 4G can be up to 10 times faster than 3G, the apps that really take advantage of 4G capability include those that are data intensive, such as video chat, live streaming video, and music and gaming. Here are some useful applications that are easy to download and are designed to help you meet five common goals. Remember, some apps are designed to be used on certain phones and not others. Manage Your Money • Mint.com Personal Finance: An easy way to manage money on the go, this Android app lets users see all their accounts in one place—all for free. • Sprint Mobile Wallet: This app gives users an easy, secure way to buy physical and digital products using their Sprint phone. Customers use a universal PIN to make purchases easily using their Visa, MasterCard and Amazon Payments accounts at participating online merchants, right on their phone. Sprint Mobile Wallet is available to download through Sprint Zone on most Sprint phones. Get Fit Whether hitting the gym or pounding the pavement, these Android apps are designed to help you get active and get in shape. • CardioTrainer: Whether they choose to break a sweat indoors or outdoors, users can take advantage of this app to track walking, running, biking and other activities. It features a pedometer, calorie counter, music player, schedule and reminders and more. Users can also set up and follow a two-month fitness routine, and even stake some money to be donated to charity if they don’t meet their goal. It’s available for Android phones. • Instant Heart Rate: By placing their finger gently over the camera lens and holding it steady for 10 seconds, users can see their heart rate and keep track of

how well that workout is working no matter where they are. Get Organized Save time and keep organized on the go with Sprint phones such as HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Epic 4G and BlackBerry Style. These phones can regularly sync contacts, calendar and e-mail with the user’s business and personal accounts. Downloadable apps for Sprint phones provide additional organization features: • Astrid Task/To-do List: This to-do list/task manager is designed to help users get stuff done. It features reminders, tags, sync, a widget and more. • Springpad: Users can save the things they want to remember with this app, including notes, tasks, lists, wines and recipes. Users can scan barcodes, take photos and search nearby places. The app automatically organizes and enhances what users save with useful links and relevant news and offers and then syncs with springpadit.com for universal access. Available for Android and BlackBerry smartphones and through GetJar for basic phones. Keep in Touch These days, there are more ways than ever to keep in touch with loved ones, no matter how much distance separates them. Of course, there’s text messaging, picture mail and social networking on Sprint phones. For anyone who’s already a pro at those, there’s now a whole new option: video chat. In fact, in a recent survey of well-known movie, TV and sports stars, Sprint found that many celebrities are looking forward to using video chat to keep in touch with friends and family. For example, Vanessa Williams, currently starring in ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” said clear and reliable video chat “would be an awesome feature for a cell device!” and expressed a desire to mobile chat with her “daughter in college to stay connected at any given time.” Amanda Beard, Olympic champion swimmer, said, “If I could video chat with anyone in my phone, it would be my son. I really get sad when I have to leave him even for a day, so it would be nice for him to see me and I him.” There are two programs available for the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic:

• Fring: This app allows free two-way video calling over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi. • Qik: Users can see and hear each other with two-way live video chats over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi, plus record and share videos with friends, family and social networks with this app. All videos are stored to the users’ account at qik.com. Go Green • Wireless Recycling: When you purchase or upgrade to a new device, remember to responsibly recycle old/unused wireless devices through a trusted take-back program. To learn more, go to www.sprint.com/responsibility or follow @ SprintGreenNews on Twitter.

Being Green, Seeing Purple (NAPS)—What’s big, purple and hangs in ash trees across the country? It’s called a “purple trap.” Set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and its state partners, this is a device that monitors for the presence of an invasive pest called the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle. The EAB Kills Ash Trees Since its discovery in 2002, this beetle has killed tens of millions of ash trees and threatens to kill millions more as it continues to spread. The adult beetle is metallic green and only about 1⁄2” long. As a larva, it spends its entire life burrowed under the bark of a tree—which makes the EAB tough to spot. While under the bark, the EAB disrupts the systems that transport food and water to the tree, eventually starving and killing it. When the EAB exits a tree, the beetle leaves a distinctive D-shaped hole in the bark. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s purple traps will monitor for a destructive beetle in your ash trees.

Purple in Ash Trees Unlike the EAB, purple traps are easy to spot. The trap is a three-dimensional triangle that’s about 24

inches long. It’s made out of thin, corrugated purple plastic and covered in glue. The beetles are attracted to the color, as well as a scented lure used to bait the traps. In the spring, EABs fly around, nibble on ash tree leaves and look for a mate. If one lands on a purple trap, it will get stuck in the glue. But don’t worry, purple traps pose no risk to the trees—or humans, pets or wildlife. Purple traps do not draw the beetle to an area—rather, they help detect it if it is already present. What You Can Do You can play a role in stopping the spread of EAB and destruction of ash trees. Start by talking to your friends and family about the serious threat this beetle poses to America’s ash trees. Understand that the beetle typically doesn’t move far on its own. It’s known as a hitchhiker, catching rides in cut wood. So don’t move firewood. Buy firewood locally and burn it where you buy it. Learn more about the EAB at www.stopthebeetle.info. If you spot a purple trap on the ground or possible signs of EAB damage in your trees, you can contact your state’s Department of Agriculture or Natural Resources, or call the toll-free USDA-EAB Hotline at (866) 322-4512.
