Tribute to Cody Ross Planned for Halftime of BYU Men’s Basketball Game on Jan. 29 University of New Mexico Department of Athletics

University of New Mexico baseball and the Westside Chamber of Commerce is planning a “Cody Ross Tribute,” the weekend of Jan. 28-29. Ross, a native of Carlsbad, N.M., and a member of the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants, will be recognized at halftime of the UNM-BYU men’s basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 29. “This is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to a great New Mexican,” said UNM head baseball coach Ray Birmingham. “It’s not everyday that one of our own is a member of a world championship team. What Cody did last fall was really special.” Ross batted .294 with five home runs and 10 RBI in 15 postseason games. He was named Most Valuable Player of the 2010 National League Championship Series after batting .350 with three homers and five RBI as the Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ross is one of just four players in NLCS history to record at least six extra-base hits in a series while his .950 slugging percentage is the best ever for a six-game NLCS series. The weekend begins Friday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m., with a banquet at Ladera Golf Course. Tickets are $50 apiece, or $500 for a table of 10, and must be reserved in advance by calling J.C. Lopez at (505) 507-4123. The banquet is limited to the first 350 people. All proceeds benefit the UNM baseball program. On Saturday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m., Ross will speak to a group of local Little League players at the Radisson Hotel (I-40 and Carlisle). At halftime of the BYU game, Birmingham will recognize Ross as an honorary Lobo, while his father, Ken Ross, will be presented with a UNM lettermen’s jacket.

The elder Ross played football at UNM as a sophomore in 1969, however, his career was cut short due to injury. He was a starting strong safety and had three interceptions on the season, including one for a TD against Army.

Simple Steps To Staying Safe

It’s important to have a fully charged cell phone when you travel.

(NAPS)—If you are a woman who travels alone frequently, there are a few simple steps you can take to help ensure your safety on the road and that could potentially protect you in a dangerous situation. • Selective parking: Whether it’s an outdoor parking lot or a covered garage, make sure the lot and space you are parking in are well lit. Avoid parking away from other cars and be aware of parking beside commercial vans without glass side panels, where potential attackers could be hiding. When you return to your car, quickly survey your surroundings, including under your vehicle and the backseat. • Have your keys in hand: Before you leave the store, take the time to find your keys and have them in hand as you walk to your vehicle. Time spent rummaging in your purse when you get to your car may leave you open to a potential attack. If you’re faced with a dangerous situation, the keys in your hand can also be used as a weapon. • Avoid playing Good Samaritan: While your heart might be in the right place, it’s not a good idea to stop to help someone when you are by yourself, especially in a remote area. It’s best to call 911 and let the dispatcher know the location of the person who is stranded. • Use your car’s safety and security features: Familiarize yourself with the safety and security features of your car. Does your car have a GPS? Is there a feature that will alert

emergency personnel if you are involved in a car accident? Automatic car starters are a good feature because they could save you critical time in a bad situation. • Keep your vehicle serviced: A poorly maintained vehicle could cause you problems at the worst possible times. Check your tires for wear and rotate them every other oil change. Have your battery checked for corrosion and make sure there’s the appropriate amount of water in it and that it holds a charge. Check your fluids and get your oil changed. Using synthetic oil such as Royal Purple can be a great way to extend the life of your car and save money. Synthetic motor oils can usually run longer than traditional motor oils, depending on the wear and tear you put on your vehicle. • Have a plan if trouble arises: Do you know what you would do if you were confronted by a potential abductor or carjacker? If you are approached by a person in or around your car, drop any bags, run and make a lot of noise that will draw attention to you. Try to stay in control of the situation. Whatever you do, do not go with the person to another location regardless of promises that you won’t be hurt. If you feel you’re being followed by another car, call 911 and drive to a police station or hospital. • Learn more: For more information about synthetic motor oil and other automotive products, visit www. royalpurple.com.

Sewage In The House?  Who Pays For The Cleanup? A sewage backup into your basement may be only the beginning of your troubles—but you can protect yourself from the cost.

(NAPS)—It’s a homeowner’s nightmare: sewer backup. Your life is suddenly turned upside down. Everything else on your personal agenda must be thrust aside while you deal with the unwelcome flow. Often its consequences include thousands of dollars in damage and an unlivable house. All too frequently the cause is a blockage in the municipal sanitary main. “Many cities and states have laws granting them governmental immunity from reimbursing homeowners for city-caused sewer backup damage into residents’ homes,” says Robin K. Olson, CPCU, senior research analyst for the International Risk Management Institute. “And even if your city doesn’t have total immunity, it might limit the damages it’s willing to pay.” For example, it might pay only if it knew of the problem in advance and had a reasonable amount of time to correct it. If the homeowner’s tree roots were a partial cause of the backup, the city might pay only a portion of the remediation costs. Typically, homeowners are responsible for maintaining the pipeline from the house to the city sewer main. Further, some places set a maximum figure that they will pay, such as $5,000 or $10,000, that might be wholly inadequate to clean up the mess.

On top of that, homeowners’ insurance policies usually do not cover such damage. “There is a solution,” says Olson. “Homeowners should purchase an ‘endorsement’ to their policy specifically covering such a loss to at least $50,000, including water damage, remediation and cleanup costs.” In addition, there are a few steps you or a professional cleaner can take: • Wet vac up all the liquid. • Scoop up all the solids. • Throw away anything not valuable. • Cut out soaked drywall and paneling. • Pressure wash everything with a disinfectant detergent. • Rinse, then vacuum up all the remaining water. • Set up fans to dry out the basement. For expert advice on the insurance, homeowners can consult an agent or broker holding the CPCU designation—assuring experience, advanced professional education and a commitment to high ethical standards. A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol

Many people may be able to control their cholesterol through diet and nutritional supplements, alone. (NAPS)—There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including

polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control anti-inflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol. To learn more, visit the website at www. Sytrinol.net.

Do You Need Financial Protection? Here’s A Checklist (NAPS)—Answering a few questions can help you determine if you need life insurance for financial protection: Do you need to protect your family? For many, the primary reason for having life insurance is to protect the family’s financial future and keep it safe and secure. The death benefit on a life insurance policy can be used by beneficiaries to fund a child’s education, take care of final expenses and help ensure that the daily future financial needs of your loved ones are met. Do you need to protect your home? You’ve saved diligently to afford a home where you can raise a family and create memories to last a lifetime. Many experts recommend that you consider using life insurance to help safeguard this asset—for many families, their greatest asset and their biggest expense. The policy proceeds can be used by beneficiaries as a way to continue mortgage payments in the unfortunate event of the loss of the provider. Do you need to protect your future earnings? Your human capital is the total value of your potential future earnings, which, in the unfortunate event of your death, would no longer be available to your loved ones. The death benefit can be used as a necessary source of income for your family to fund educations and a secure future. Protecting your human capital is even more important when you are in your 30s and 40s, when your human capital is highest and your accumulated financial wealth is typically lowest. For example, if you are 30 years old, earn $40,000 a year and expect to retire at age 65, that is $1.4 million of potential future earnings. Life insurance can guard against the potential loss of

human capital in the event of premature death. Without life insurance, that future income is unprotected and lost forever. Do you need to be more disciplined with your savings? A whole life policy may offer what you need. Paying premiums monthly, quarterly or annually to build cash value is a way to ensure that you are making regular contributions to an important part of your overall savings plan. You can even borrow from your policy’s accumulated cash value by taking a loan at competitive interest rates and use this money in any way you wish (policy loans reduce cash value and death benefit). Having the funds available for future needs, including paying off a mortgage, funding a college education, putting a down payment on a home for your child or paying for a child’s wedding, is an important “living benefit” of whole life insurance. Do you have an increased desire for a sound financial strategy? If you’re like most Americans, the answer is yes. A recent survey conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs and sponsored by New York Life noted that 83 percent of Americans age 30 and older agree that the economic crisis has increased their desire to provide financial protection for their family. A life insurance policy can be the foundation of a prudent financial plan. When you purchase a life insurance product, you want to work with a company that will be around for decades to come. As a result, it is important to consider a trustworthy provider that has a long, steady track record and a high degree of financial strength and stability. A knowledgeable advisor will help you determine the amount of insurance needed to protect your family. You can contact a New York Life agent toll-free at (800) 710-7945. A Speedier Internet Is Good For The Economy (NAPS)—After hearing the results of recent research, you may wonder if your Internet connection is up to speed. New research from the Communications Workers of America (CWA) indicates that nearly half (49 percent) of U.S. residents’ Internet connection speeds fall below the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) minimum broadband speed standard. Currently, only 1 percent of U.S. Internet connections meet the FCC’s broadband speed goal for the year 2015. “Speed matters on the Internet, enabling innovations in telemedicine, education, economic development, energy conservation and job creation,” said Julius Genachowski, chairman of the FCC. Many Internet connections are not fast enough to support emerging online services that save money and improve lives, such as home health monitoring or distance learning, which enables a student to participate in a class discussion via a video hookup. Without broadband Internet access, people cannot participate in important activities. Most job applications today are submitted online. People apply for and get public services via the Web. Kids need the Internet to do school assignments. Teachers communicate with parents through digital technologies. The FCC has released a National Broadband Plan to address the challenges of highspeed Internet access.

The plan lays a framework for all Americans to have access to affordable, high-speed Internet, but it has been stalled in part by debate on net neutrality. One solution recommended in the National Broadband Plan— which CWA agrees with—is to update the Universal Service Fund (USF) to include broadband Internet access support. Currently, the USF program only supports telephone service to rural areas and low-income families. To advance economic growth and maintain “CWA applauds the FCC for sustainable communities, all Americans its commitment to improving need access to high-speed Internet access to high-speed Internet connections. and recent decision to protect an open Internet,” said Larry Cohen, president, Communications Workers of America. “Improving broadband deployment, connection speeds, and adoption will help facilitate job and business growth across the nation.” To find out if your Internet connection is up to speed, you can take the Speed Matters test created by CWA. To report the real-time connection speed, the test sends an HTTP request to the nearest server and measures the time it takes to receive a response. Participation is voluntary. To learn more and to take the speed test, go to w ww.SpeedMatters.org.

Get Help Getting Healthy

You don’t have to go it alone. A social network on your computer or phone can help

(NAPS)—If you’ve long feared you’ve a slim chance of losing weight and staying fit, a few hints from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may help: • Make a commitment. Many people find it helpful to sign a written contract with themselves committing to the process. • Take stock of where you are. Your doctor can evaluate your health and weight and suggest lifestyle changes. • Set goals. “Exercise More” is not a specific goal. “I’ll walk 15 minutes, three days a week” is. • Identify resources for information and support. Join a weight loss group. • Continually monitor your progress. Studies have shown that the more consistently a person tracks food intake and exercise, the more likely he or she is to lose weight and gain fitness. To help, there’s now a health and fitness community with easy-to-use tools for tracking nutritional intake and exercise levels. It’s a social network for people interested in diet and fitness, with more than a million active members. Each member gets a personalized calorie counter and exercise tracker based on his or her profile and determines a daily calorie budget. Custom tools measure BMI (body mass index) and BMR (basal metabolic rate; the number of calories you

burn doing nothing). You can customize foods and exercises to help you meet goals based on your profile. The system lets you track food intake and exercise, with a fast and simple interface. There are more than 600,000 food items in the database and it’s growing daily due to user contributions, so most people find the majority of what they eat is already online. You can track your intake wherever you go because the MyFitnessPal. com site can be reached through a free app on both the iPhone and the Android platforms, giving members full mobile access to their account, including the entire food and exercise database. Phone and computer input sync automatically. The network remembers what you eat most often and makes it easy to add those foods again to your log. The more you track your meals, the easier it becomes. You can track calories as well as all major nutrients including, fat, protein, carbs, fiber, cholesterol and more. Graphs and reports monitor your progress. Because the community actively uses social media channels, you get a steady stream of motivation, communication and support. Discussion forums let users learn from each other, share tips and recipes, give and get encouragement and make friends. • Learn more online at www.myfitnesspal.com.

Maximizing Small-Business Assets (NAPS)—Across the United States, smallbusiness owners are finding new ways to reduce costs to maximize the bottom line. One place to cut costs and increase efficiencies can be the traditional office printer. A few simple steps can greatly reduce printing costs while helping the environment, a win-win scenario. Here are a few suggestions: • Establish a Printing Policy— Direct employees to print in color only when preparing clientfacing documents and presentations. Expand page margins when printing to get more on each page. • Consider an MFP—A multifunction printer, such as those from Canon’s imageRUNNER, imageRUNNER ADVANCE and imageCLASS product lines, combine a printer, scanner, copier and fax machine. Not only will this save office space, it can save the cost of buying and maintaining multiple devices and reduce the amount of energy consumed.

• Duplex Printing—MFPs come with duplex printing capabilities, meaning they can print on both sides of the page. Making the most of each piece of paper by choosing duplex printing as the default setting significantly reduces printing costs while saving resources used to make paper. • Conserve Energy Where You Can—Look for MFPs that are ENERGY STAR qualified. Energysaving modes will help reduce carbon emissions and provide significant cost savings while benefiting the environment. • Software Can Make a Difference—By pairing an MFP with the appropriate software, such as Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE Tracker, small-business owners can better manage documents and thereby cut costs. For example, employees can scan and e-mail documents instead of printing and faxing them. • Learn More—More tips and tricks for saving time, money and space can be found online at www.usa.canon.com.
