Anzac Day stands as a solemn tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACS). Observed annually on April 25th, this day holds profound significance as it commemorates the service and sacrifice of those who fought and died for their countries, particularly during World War 1. At the heart of Anzac Day lies the poignant phrase, “Lest We Forget,” serving as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of the ANZACS.

Anzac Day traces its origins to the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915, where ANZAC forces made their mark on history with their courage and resilience amidst unimaginable hardships. Despite facing formidable challenges, including harsh terrain and determined enemy opposition, the ANZACS demonstrated unparalleled bravery, forging an indelible legacy that continues to resonate a century later.

While Gallipoli remains a defining moment in ANZAC history, the contributions of these brave men and women extended far beyond the shores of Turkey. From the trenches of the Western Front to the deserts of the Middle East, the ANZACS fought with distinction in battles that tested their mettle and resolve. Their selflessness and sacrifice are deeply ingrained in the fabric of Australian and New Zealand identities.

Lest We Forget: The phrase “Lest We Forget” serves as a solemn vow to remember and honour the sacrifices of the ANZACS, ensuring that their memory endures for generations to come. It reminds us of the human cost of war and the importance of cherishing the freedoms we enjoy today—freedoms that were secured through the ultimate sacrifice of so many.

Each year, on April 25th, Australians and New Zealanders gather in solemn remembrance to pay tribute to the ANZACS. From dawn services to marches and memorial ceremonies, the day is marked by a sense of reverence and gratitude for those who served. Through these acts of commemoration, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving the memory of the ANZACS and the values for which they fought.

Anzac Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the ANZACS in service of their countries. Through the phrase “Lest We Forget,” we honour their memory and pledge to uphold the values of courage, sacrifice, and mateship for which they stood. As we reflect on their legacy, let us ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten, and that their spirit continues to inspire future generations to strive for peace and unity.

With Autumn firmly here, the balance of our events offering has tipped from outdoor, physical activities in favour of more indoor and cultural pursuits.

The spotlight is shining brighter on our talented artists and producers, with festivals dedicated to film, music, food and wine all on the calendar.

Whether it’s performances at the Potato Shed, or exhibitions at the National Wool Museum (NWM), Council is committed to supporting our clever and creative community.

Showing at the NWM through to mid-July is an exhibition celebration 40 years of our iconic Pako Festa, through the objects and stories of Geelong’s multicultural communities.

Showcasing fashion, crafts, heritage items, archival material and fascinating reflections, it tells the story of our dynamic and increasingly multicultural city.

On top of this, the exhibition will be augmented by a special event at the NWM on 16 May, featuring quality local food and international short films.

There is also plenty occurring in our live music space.

Council has a strong focus on fostering collaboration and helping to grow Geelong and The Bellarine’s music sector.

In partnership with the Live Music Office and APRA AMCOS, we are offering Live & Local, which is delivering development workshops, micro-music festivals and a local industry forum.

We are also looking to develop strategic policy to ensure our live music sector can support greater participation and more job opportunities.

To help keep people up to date with activities in the scene, the City of Greater Geelong has established a Music Industry Register.

It provides musicians with information about live music activities, workshops, grants, networking and professional development opportunities.

Work, Wander, and Well-being: Mastering the Art of the Working Holiday

Taking your business on the road for a working holiday presents an enticing blend of work and leisure, allowing you to explore new destinations while keeping your operations running smoothly.

This concept has gained popularity with the rise of digital nomadism and the increased flexibility in work arrangements. To ensure success, it’s crucial to approach this venture with strategic planning and thoughtful consideration of various factors.

Here are the key strategies and considerations to ponder:

1. Technology and Connectivity

• Reliable Internet Access: Your foremost priority should be ensuring consistent and reliable internet access. Research connectivity options in your intended destinations, including local SIM cards with data plans, satellite internet, portable WiFi devices, and co-working spaces known for their high-speed internet.

• Tech Tools and Software: Leverage cloud-based services for data storage and collaboration, ensuring you can access your work from anywhere. Utilize task management and communication tools to stay connected with your team or clients.

2. Time Management

• Flexible Scheduling: Adopt a flexible yet disciplined approach to your work schedule. Be mindful of time zone differences that may affect your communication with clients or your home office. Allocate specific hours for work and exploration, ensuring neither aspect is neglected.

• Productivity Techniques: Employ productivity methods such as the Pomodoro Technique or time blocking to maximize your efficiency during work hours, allowing you to fully enjoy your leisure time.

3. Legal and Financial Considerations

• Insurance and Health Care: Ensure you have comprehensive travel and health insurance that covers you internationally. Consider any vaccinations or health checks you may need before departure.

• Tax Obligations and Business Regulations: Understand the tax implications and any local business regulations that may apply to working in a foreign country. Consult with a tax advisor or legal professional to navigate these complexities.

4. Work-Life Balance

• Setting Boundaries: It’s crucial to establish clear boundaries between work and leisure time. Be disciplined about “switching off” from work to immerse yourself in the new environments and experiences.

• Mindfulness and Well-being: Regularly practice mindfulness and self-care routines to maintain your physical and mental well-being. This balance is key to sustaining productivity and enjoying your working holiday to the fullest.

5. Networking and Community Engagement

• Local Networking Opportunities: Look for opportunities to meet local professionals and other digital nomads. Co-working spaces often host networking events and workshops that can enrich your experience and provide valuable connections.

• Online Communities: Join online forums or groups for digital nomads to share tips, advice, and experiences. These communities can be invaluable for support and networking.

6.

Adaptability and Contingency Planning

• Flexibility: Be prepared to adapt your plans as needed. Travel uncertainties, work demands, and personal preferences may change during your trip.

• Emergency Plan: Have a contingency plan for emergencies, including knowledge of local emergency services, access to emergency funds, and backup accommodation options.

7. Cultural Sensitivity and Local Experiences

• Cultural Awareness: Take the time to learn about and respect the local customs and cultural norms of your destinations. This mindfulness ensures harmonious interactions and enriches your travel experience.

• Explore and Engage: Allocate time to explore local attractions, cuisine, and culture. Engaging with the local community and environment can inspire creativity and provide a refreshing perspective on your work.

Conclusion

Transforming your working holiday into a productive and fulfilling experience requires careful planning, flexibility, and a balanced approach to work and leisure. By considering the key strategies outlined above, you can navigate the challenges and reap the rewards of combining work with the adventure of travel. This not only fosters personal growth and resilience but also opens up new opportunities and insights for your business.

Carrying forward the unused concessional contribution cap

ACCOUNTANT

Does a person need to fully use their current year’s concessional contribution cap before they can access their unused concessional contribution cap from earlier financial year?

For the 2023-24 financial year, the unused concessional contribution cap can be carried forward when a person had a total superannuation balance on 30 June 2023 of less than $500,000.

Then, once they have fully used their 2023-24 concessional contribution cap of $27,500, they are able to carry forward their unused cap, starting with any unused cap from 2018-19.

This can be a very useful strategy to reduce tax in the current year for people able to maximise their salary sacrifice contributions, or to make personal tax deductible contributions.

The unused cap can be carried forward for a period of up to five years.

Therefore, from 1 July 2024, any unused cap remaining from 2018-19 will no longer be available.

However, from 1 July 2024, even though any unused cap from 2018-19 will drop off, the maximum concessional contributions available to a person who has not made any concessional contributions since 1 July 2019 will be:

Cautionary notes:

1. Reportable superannuation contributions are added back for the purpose of determining liability to pay Division 293 tax. When maximising concessional contributions, it is important to consider if all, or a part of the contributions will be subject to the additional 15% Division 293 tax.

2. If aged between 67 and 75, a contributor will need to have met the work test (or be eligible for the work test exemption) in the current financial year to be able to claim a tax deduction for their personal superannuation contributions.

Changes to phase 3 tax cuts accepted in parliament

On 27 February 2024 the Albanese government’s proposed changes to the previously legislated stage 3 tax cuts passed both Houses of Parliament. The Bill received Royal Assent on 5 March 2024.

As a result, the tax rates that will apply to Australian resident taxpayers from 1 July 2024 are:

Being able to carry forward the unused concessional contribution cap can be very useful for, amongst other things, people wishing to manage a capital gains tax liability following the disposal of assets such as an investment property.

The changes will result in a tax cut for all Australians with a taxable income exceeding $22,575 however, for higher income earners (those with taxable income of more than ~$146,000), the tax cuts will be less than originally legislated.

Loving the not-knowing... a leadership game-changer!

Ever think about your fitness? Chances are you do... in some way or another.

But I’m guessing, that when you think of ‘being fit’, you think physically.

I’ll even go so far as to say that your awareness and focus around being ‘emotionally fit’ is not even a thought...?

How’d I go, is that true?

Fitness. There’s physical and there’s emotional.

Emotional Fitness is based on the relationship you have with yourself, and it can be measured by the quality of your relationship with uncertainty...

The more emotionally fit you are, the greater your ability to handle ‘hard’ moments better...because you can see things more accurately.

You’re not clouded by mistrust, rigid rules, swayed perspective, lack of boundaries...

Instead...

* you are flexible in your thinking –more ‘fascinated’ than offended

* you see things more clearly

* you trust yourself and

* you have self-respect

These traits, this ability to be emotionally fit, shows through an increased knowledge of who you are.

You are also low in drama and know when and how to language your truth.

You’re open to others; show more compassion, and every day you move closer to being in complete alignment with your values.

It feels good.

And it’s a wonderful place to lead from

It brings objectivity.

It brings the ability to adjust, even lean-in to, uncertainty.

Leaning-in will make it easier to feel inspired and creative; to see opportunity in new experiences, in an uncertain world, in a workplace that’s filled with change.

For some people, when they are surrounded by uncertainty, they fill their world with comfort...

Anything that makes them feel safe, secure and reduces never-ending internal questioning.

Another word for comfort is certainty. So, there is a big possibility that you and/ or your team have overcompensated with comfort and certainty in your worlds.

Comfort clouds;

• outside the box thinking

• the yearning to feel challenged and

• the desire to create.

Staying in your comfort zone, allowing this kind of thinking and feelings to foster in your workplace will surely be stifling and choking your bottom-line results.

It’s time to encourage greatness. It’s time to bring back some spark, to lighten up, to lean-in to self, to move towards the state of becoming emotionally fit.

Here’s some easy steps that you and your team can follow;

8 FIND GEELONG | APRIL 2024 www.findgeelong.com.au

1. to stimulate originality and expression

2. to go back to basics and

3. to EMBRACE THE UNCERTAINTY and bring more flexibility to your role –and life!

1. HAVE A GO! –

2. Say Yes and then work out how.

3. The key is to make up your mind quickly and change it slowly. When you say YES, it confirms you’re worth it. You will then back yourself to figure out the rest. This way you’ll consistently discover that you’ve got more to give, and you have yet another level within.

2. TRUST YOUR SENSES

2. Doing this effectively will form a belief within yourself that you can draw on at times of uncertainty - this will carry you through. By believing in yourself and trusting your senses, you’re more likely to give it a go in the areas that you may not think you know so well.

3. DO ONE THING EVERY DAY TO GET YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

3. Could be as simple as speaking to someone you wouldn’t usually, going down a slide at the park (with or without the kids!), go bare foot on a trail walk.

4. DO THE LESS PREDICTABLE THING

4. Not to shock others, but to surprise yourself. This will build your inner trust.

5. CHOOSE A MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND LOOSEN UP –

5. “I have no idea how to do this, yet I’m going to have a good ole crack at it and work out where I suck”.

5. Through striving forward and giving it a go, we discover where we struggle

5. and where the gaps are for us to move forward.

5. “Fantastic, I now know what I have to learn and where to progress”

Salary Packaging: Saving tips for your mortgage

Buying a home is a massive milestone for most people, but it often comes with the financial responsibility of a mortgage. These loans can seem daunting at the beginning, but by doing everything you can to pay them off, you’ll feel more and more in control. Plus, we’re here to help! We’ve put together a list of the smartest ways to save money - so you can put it back into your mortgage and pay it off quicker. By the end of this article, that loan will seem way more manageable. So, let’s get started.

Prioritise repayments

As we all know, the more payments you make towards your mortgage, the quicker you’ll be able to pay off your loan. But the catch with loans is that a large portion of what you’re paying back is interest. So, your goal is to pay back as much of the debt as you can, as quickly as you can, reducing the amount of interest you’re paying - because by paying off your debt quicker, it will have less time to rack up interest. Here are some smart ways of doing just that.

First off, if you can, pay more than the minimum required amount each month. This will mean you can significantly reduce the total interest paid over the loan’s lifespan and shorten the repayment period. Don’t have a ton of extra money at the end of a month? Even small additional payments can have a substantial long-term impact on your loan, potentially saving you thousands of dollars in interest in the long run.

Put unexpected cash into your mortgage. Whether it’s a tax refund, money as a gift, a work bonus, an inheritance, or any other

unexpected windfall, by allocating those funds towards your loan, you’ll lower your interest considerably.

Just remember to check what your lender’s policies are on extra repayments, particularly if you have a fixed-rate home loan. While variable-rate loans typically have no restrictions on how many additional repayments you can make, fixed-rate loans can have limitations, including prescribed thresholds, or the total amount that you can put in over a period of time.

Open an Offset Account

Offset accounts are a simple and effective way to cut down on the interest you pay on your mortgage. It’s simple - they work like regular savings accounts, except they’re linked directly to your home loan. This means that the money you save into this account directly reduces your loan balance, which brings down the interest you pay on your mortgage. Here’s how it works: If, for example, you owe $600,000 on your home loan, and you have $20,000 in your offset account, you’ll only pay interest on $580,000. This means you’re freeing up extra money that you can then use to make additional repayments on your loan, meaning you’ll be able to pay it off quicker.

Set Up Automatic Payments

Setting up automatic payments for your mortgage has many benefits. For starters, it will mean that the amount of money will be automatically allocated to your salary, so you don’t have to worry about getting tempted to spend it on something else. But another, and less known fact, is that because automatic payments help you avoid late fees, you may be able to lower your interest rate. You’ll probably have seen that many lenders offer discounts or incentives to people who open automatic repayment options. This is because they favour mortgage payments that are made on time each month. And by doing that, you can

10 FIND GEELONG | APRIL 2024 www.findgeelong.com.au
SALARY

actually improve your credit score, which means you could potentially qualify for better mortgage terms in the future.

Consider Biweekly Payments

Another effective strategy for saving on your mortgage is to switch to a biweekly payment schedule. Instead of making one monthly payment, you make half of your monthly payment every two weeks. The result is that you end up paying 26 halfpayments per year, which is equivalent to 13 full payments - instead of 12. So, by paying fortnightly, you end up making an extra month’s repayment each year. Meaning that you’ll save on interest because you’ll be paying off your loan faster.

Salary packaging your mortgage payments

Yes, you read that right! With salary packaging, you can pay your mortgage using pre-taxincome instead of after-tax earnings. Which means your mortgage repayments are effectively tax-free. Plus, the benefit is applicable to every tax bracket. The fact that you’re able to pay off your mortgage using pre-tax income means you’ll already be saving money. You could then use the difference to increase the amount of your repayments, helping you pay down your loan faster and potentially saving you thousands of dollars in interest.

To make things even easier, you can opt to have your loan repayments deducted directly from your salary. Doing it this way eliminates the need for separate repayments from your bank account, so

you don’t even have to think about it every month. Plus, you can sync your mortgage payments with your salary pay cycle, so that your mortgage payment is always on time, which, as we now know, could increase your credit rating.

Setting it up is a simple process, especially when you use a trusted salary packaging provider. Remember to check your employer’s Fringe Benefits Tax status before getting started.

INCREASE YOUR SALES

BUSINESS COACH

In the dynamic landscape of Australian retail, traditional tactics such as blanket discounts are losing their efficacy. Today’s consumers are discerning, seeking value beyond mere price slashes. With retail sales under strain, businesses are rethinking their approaches, pivoting towards strategies that resonate with the evolving demands of the market.

The advent of online shopping has ushered in a new era of transparency, prompting consumers to prioritize necessity over impulse purchases. The era of rampant discounting is waning, with many Australians scrutinizing the motives behind hefty markdowns. Discounted goods may signal either surplus inventory or inflated initial prices, both of which fail to align with consumers’ quest for genuine value.

The Australian retail landscape, once saturated with stores, now faces a recalibration, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now is the opportune moment for businesses to introspect and recalibrate their strategies. Analysing the closures of competitors becomes imperative, unravelling the reasons behind their demise and discerning whether their former clientele aligns with one’s own target market.

To entice and retain customers in this shifting terrain, businesses must prioritize five fundamental drivers:

1. The 5 Rights of Business: Aligning products, pricing, timing, quality, and quantity with market demands ensures a competitive edge. Offering the right products at the right price and time, coupled with impeccable quality and optimal quantity management, maximizes appeal and minimizes excess inventory.

2. Exclusivity: Distinguish your offerings by providing exclusive products or unique value propositions. Whether through exclusive product launches, enticing gifts with purchase, or bundled packages, differentiate your brand to stand out amidst competition.

3. Staff Expertise: Invest in training and equipping your staff with comprehensive product knowledge. Empower them to cater to consumers’ needs effectively, offering suitable alternatives and enhancing basket sizes through personalized service.

4. Bundled Services: Extend value beyond the product itself by offering supplementary services like after-sales support or customization options. Enhancing the overall customer experience fosters loyalty and strengthens brand affinity.

5. Evolutionary Displays: Captivate consumers’ attention with visually appealing displays across all touchpoints. Invest in captivating store layouts, compelling online presentations, and impactful marketing materials to leave a lasting impression. Rather than relying solely on deeper discounts, emphasize the breadth and quality of your product assortment to establish your brand as a premier destination.

In navigating the evolving retail landscape of Australia, businesses must embrace adaptability and innovation. By aligning strategies with changing consumer preferences and industry dynamics, retailers can not only survive but thrive in this competitive environment.

In the intricate tapestry of retail, success hinges not only on the products offered but also on the immersive environments created to showcase them. As businesses endeavor to resonate with consumers amidst evolving trends, the art of crafting captivating experiences emerges as paramount.

Theatre in Store and Online: Transforming mere transactions into theatrical experiences is the cornerstone of modern retailing. Infusing theatrics into physical stores and digital platforms alike cultivates

an aura of intrigue, beckoning consumers to explore and discover. From dynamic window displays to engaging marketing campaigns, instilling a sense of curiosity ensures a steady flow of returning customers eager to unveil new narratives.

Curiosity as Currency: In the realm of retail, curiosity is a potent currency. Constantly refreshing displays, both in-store and online, fosters a sense of anticipation, prompting customers to embark on a journey of exploration. Placing enticing offerings towards the rear of the store encourages patrons to traverse the entirety of the space, uncovering hidden gems along the way. Strategically positioning markdown racks towards the store’s depths tantalizes visitors with bargain-hunting adventures, while the allure of loss leaders captivates their attention, enticing them to delve deeper into the retail tapestry.

Embracing Innovation: Innovation serves as the lifeblood of retail, breathing vitality into the shopping experience. Regularly introducing new products not only differentiates businesses from competitors but also keeps consumers returning in anticipation of novel discoveries. Embracing online exclusivity not only expands reach but also provides a platform for experimentation, allowing businesses to refine their offerings and maintain relevance in an ever-evolving landscape.

The Power of Emotive Marketing: Beyond transactional interactions lies the realm of emotive marketing, where connections are forged on a deeper, more resonant level. By tapping into customers’ aspirations and desires, emotive messaging transcends mere persuasion, inspiring loyalty and devotion. Upholding authenticity and sincerity, retailers can evoke a sense of belonging, positioning themselves as purveyors of not just products, but experiences that enrich lives and fulfill aspirations.

In the words of Alvin Toffler, a visionary ahead of his time, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” As the retail landscape continues to evolve, embracing innovation, fostering curiosity, and nurturing emotional connections emerge as indispensable strategies, propelling businesses towards sustained growth and enduring success.

In the ever-evolving landscape of retail, adaptation is the key to resilience and growth. As we reflect on our journey, it’s imperative to assess what we’ve learned, what needs to be unlearned, and what lessons we can glean from the discerning customers of today. Here are five imperatives that demand our attention:

1. Be First to Market: In a world where innovation drives consumer preferences, being first to market is paramount. Anticipating trends and swiftly introducing innovative products or services positions businesses at the vanguard of consumer consciousness, fostering brand loyalty and market dominance.

2. Know What is on Trend: Understanding prevailing trends is not merely a luxury but a necessity in today’s fast-paced market. By staying attuned to shifting consumer preferences, businesses can tailor their offerings to align with the zeitgeist, ensuring relevance and resonance with their target audience.

3. Have Profitable Lost Leaders: The concept of loss leaders takes on new significance when profitability is paramount. Strategically leveraging loss leaders as catalysts for customer engagement and upselling opportunities can yield substantial returns, provided they are meticulously curated to balance cost and allure.

4. Craft an Irresistible Offer: In a sea of choices, standing out necessitates crafting offers that captivate and compel. Whether through exclusive promotions, bundled packages, or personalized incentives, presenting customers with an irresistible proposition not only drives conversions but also cultivates enduring loyalty.

5. Utilize Compelling Displays: The adage “first impressions matter” rings especially true in the realm of retail. Utilizing captivating store and window displays acts as a gateway to consumer engagement, enticing passersby to step through the threshold and immerse themselves

in the brand experience. By creating an environment that beckons and beguiles, businesses ensure that no opportunity for engagement is lost.

As we navigate the complexities of modern retail, embracing these imperatives empowers us to not only meet but exceed the expectations of today’s discerning consumers. By learning from their preferences, unlearning outdated practices, and embracing innovation, we pave the path towards sustained success and relevance in an ever-changing marketplace.

Why Video Is Important?

VIDEO PRODUCTION

In this current fast-paced digital landscape, technology is ever-changing but the consistent factor that has stayed evident is that there will always be a need for visual representation whether that be marketing material, products, or video content.

In the last 10 years, we have seen a shift from a stock standard / formulated corporate video to detailed narratives with intricate storylines and a demand for creating high-end, high-budget video content for social media platforms.

So what does this mean for a small business or not-for-profit? In order to answer that, we need to first know the “why videos are important”.

Video content has become a fundamental part of how we as businesses are seen by the outside world. In an instant, your business can be seen by thousands of people with a click of a button, a swipe or pop up.

In a recent survey done by wyzowlPeople watch an average of 19 hours of online video content per week. 96% have watched an explainer video to learn about a product or service and 88% have bought that product or service after watching a video.

This is why making videos that are clear and concise are essential to capture your audience. Not only does it send a message about your brand but also shows that you take pride in what you do, how you do it and most of all you love what you do.

Video is a great way to get your message across in a short amount of time and can also be crafted and targeted to your needs. Once you understand why your business needs a video then the next step is to understand the stages of video production.

There are 3 main stages:

1. Pre-Production: the concept, key messages and scripting

2. Production: filming components

3. Post-Production: editing, drafts, completion

Having a basic understanding of the process helps when you are working out timelines for campaigns and also knowing that it takes a little bit of time to create a good video makes all the difference.

Embracing a new approach to traditional marketing and allocating the budget for making video content will help ensure that you keep up-to-date with current trends but also secures longevity of your business or not-for-profit.

Keep this in mind - customers are more likely to share video content with their friends and family than other types of content.

Quick Tip:

Making videos doesn’t need to be hard Plan, Prepare and Practise your script before you record. This will simplify the process for you.

Government superannuation contributions to be added to paid parental leave

From 1 July 2025, parents will receive 12% superannuation on government-funded paid parental leave (PPL) on top of the minimum weekly wage of $882.75 per week.If enacted, this measure will provide parents who access the PPL government scheme with super contributions paid into their nominated super account equivalent to 12% of their leave pay.

Current eligibility for PPL

Residency test

A person must meet the residency requirements from the day they become the child’s primary carer until the end of the PPL period. The parent must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or an eligible temporary visa holder.

Work test

To meet the paid parental leave work test, an individual must have:

- worked for at least 10 of the 13 months (295 days in a 392-day period) prior to the birth or adoption of the child

- worked for at least 330 hours in the 10-month period (at least 7.6 hours a week on average)

- had no more than an 8-week gap between 2 consecutive working days.

Income test

Eligibility for the government scheme is limited by taxable income measured in the year prior to having the child. For the 2023–24 year, the income threshold is $168,865 or $350,000 for a 2-parent family.

In a 2-parent family, parents may share the current 20-week PPL between them.

Introduction of super payments by the government

From 1 July 2025, parents accessing the government scheme would also receive government-funded superannuation contributions into their nominated super account, at 12% of the leave pay.

Under the current minimum weekly wage of $882.75 per week, the super that will be paid by the government amounts to $106 per week.

Other matters

Announced in the 2022–23 Federal Budget and pending parliamentary

approval, 2 additional weeks of PPL will be added each year from 1 July 2024 to the current 20 weeks until it reaches a total of 26 weeks by July 2026.

With this Bill, each parent will be provided a reserved leave of 4 weeks from July 2026 intended to encourage shared care. Also included in the Bill is concurrent leave, which means that from July 2026, both parents can take 4 weeks of PPL at the same time if they wish to do so.

Next steps

This measure will have implications for both employees and employers.

Employees

If enacted, the benefit a single parent may receive for 2 children would amount to $4,240 (based on the current 20-week PPL period). Compounded annually for an average of 30 years, this will result in a more than $20,000 increase in superannuation balances upon retirement.

Employers

This measure does not change how employer-run PPL programs are conducted. Although some employers choose to pay super, the introduction of this measure does not mandate employers to make superannuation contributions for any PPL they may pay to their employees.

Google Reviews

DIGITAL MEDIA

In today’s digital landscape, the influence of online reviews on businesses cannot be overstated. Among the plethora of review platforms available, Google Reviews stand out as a crucial factor in shaping a company’s online reputation. Positive Google Reviews not only boost visibility but also foster trust among potential customers. The significance of Positive Google Reviews lies in several key aspects.

Firstly, they play a pivotal role in enhancing visibility and credibility for a business. Google’s algorithm prioritises businesses with higher ratings, making them more likely to appear in local search queries. Positive reviews contribute significantly to a company’s credibility, establishing trust among prospective customers.

In the modern consumer landscape, online reviews heavily influence purchasing decisions. Studies have shown that a staggering 93% of consumers rely on Google Reviews to assess the quality of a business, and 72% won’t take action until they’ve read reviews. Positive Google Reviews serve as social proof, reassuring potential customers

that they are making a sound choice by opting for a particular product or service.

Positive Google Reviews also provide a competitive edge in a crowded marketplace. A higher star rating and positive testimonials can be the differentiating factor that influences a customer to choose one business over another.

One effective approach for gaining Google reviews is implementing automated review requests. Utilising automated systems to request reviews can streamline the process. After a customer completes a purchase or service, an automated email or text message can be sent, politely requesting feedback. This ensures that satisfied customers are prompted to leave a review without significant effort on their part.

Another strategy involves incentivising positive reviews. While it’s crucial to remain ethical and compliant with review platform policies, offering small incentives can motivate customers to share their positive experiences. Consider providing discounts, loyalty points, or exclusive access to promotions as tokens of appreciation for leaving a positive review.

Timing and personalisation also play crucial roles in soliciting positive reviews. It’s essential to send review requests when the positive experience is fresh in the customer’s mind. Personalising the request by addressing the customer by name and referencing specific details of their interaction with the business demonstrates that their feedback is valued.

Lastly, actively engaging with existing reviews, both positive and negative, can further enhance a business’s reputation. Responding to reviews, expressing gratitude for positive feedback, and addressing concerns in a constructive manner not only demonstrate excellent customer service but also encourage others to leave reviews.

Best tips for cleaning up after painting

The job of painting your home doesn’t finish when you stand back and admire your smooth, newly coloured walls and ceilings. There is a whole lot of stuff to do after the last brushstroke before you can celebrate your painting project being fully completed with a glass of wine or beer.

What do I do with cloths, sheets and tape?

Even while you are painting, you can make your final clean-up easier and quicker by having a damp cloth handy to wipe up drips and spills straightaway. Drips on dry or non-porous surfaces can be wiped off with mineral spirits or paint thinner.

Before the paint dries, remove all masking tape. This will minimise the likelihood of the new paint film lifting off with the tape. No problem if it has dried – just score the edge of the tape with a sharp knife or razor blade before removing the tape. For glass surfaces, wait until the paint is completely dry before using a knife or paint scraper.

When you remove the drop cloths or sheets, fold the corners into the middle. This prevents sills or drips from flicking onto surrounding areas.

Oily rags can spontaneously combust (catch on fire) if piled up or left in a closed container or space. Not fun! You can safeguard against this by immersing oily rags in an open container filled with water or drying them before putting in the washing machine.

How do I clean paintbrushes?

There are few things more tedious than getting your brushes, rollers, edgers, scrapers and paint trays out for a new job and discovering that you didn’t clean them after your last one. When you’ve finished painting, clean whatever equipment you used immediately so that paint doesn’t dry permanently on them, and dry them thoroughly to prevent rust. If you used latex paints, you will need warm soapy water; oil paints need turps, mineral spirits or paint thinner. Don’t soak brushes in solvent or water as this can damage the bristles. Pour the soapy water or solvent into a container and dip the paintbrush into the solution. Work it through the brush bristles, dipping up and down in the container several times. Spin the paint brush in a waste area to

remove excess water or thinner and then repeat process with a clean container and clean water or thinner.

A useful tip is to use one set of synthetic painting tools for oil-based products and another set for water-based products. It is much easier to clean the paint brushes if you don’t switch back and forth between the two types of bases.

A paintbrush comb is one of the best ways to clean a paint brush. It cleans through the centre of the brush and removes any residue near the ferrule’s edge. Paint residue left in the brush hardens, causing the bristles to ‘set’, which makes them lose their bend recovery. Once clean, use the paintbrush comb to straighten the bristles or filaments. Reshape the paint brush to its original shape and lay flat to dry.

What about rollers and trays?

For rollers, disassemble and rinse with warm water, add detergent and work it into a lather to remove the paint. Air dry it standing upright to avoid crushing the fibres. For solvent-based paint, pour the solvent into the paint tray, circulate it through the roller and let it soak for a few minutes. Squeeze the excess solvent out of the roller and repeat the process with new solvent until it’s clean.

Pour unused paint from your tray back into the tin, providing it’s not contaminated by insects or dirt. Run water over your paint tray, use a scrubbing brush to remove the rest of the paint and dry the tray off with an old cloth. Discard tray liners when dry.

After using the appropriate cleaner on your hands, wash them with soap and water.

Of course, to save time and effort, you could hire a professional painter who will do all this for you!

The other kind of Liver Disease

NATUROPATH

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is on the rise and is caused by poor dietary choices. But just like anything that is caused by a poor diet, it can be improved with a good one. If you would like to know more about Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD), see my article from last month, but for NAFLD, read on.

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Unlike AFLD, NAFLD isn’t primarily linked to alcohol consumption. Instead, it results from factors such as poor dietary choices, sedentary lifestyles, and insulin resistance. The liver, faced with an influx of refined sugars and unhealthy fats, undergoes a process where excess glucose is converted into fat, leading to the accumulation observed in NAFLD.

Diagnosis

NAFLD is diagnosed the same as AFLD, by a blood test, and if you’re someone who doesn’t drink much, the elevated liver enzymes will be determined as nonalcoholic liver disease. However, there are signs and symptoms that give us some good clues on the health of your liver.

Firstly, waist to hip ratio. If the measurement around your waist is larger than that of your hips, it’s likely that fat has accumulated around your digestive organs. This places stress on both your liver and your pancreas, two organs that work closely together in metabolism. If you need help with how to lose this weight around your abdominal organs, I have a 6 week Nutritional weight loss course that can help you here.

Other signs of poor liver function include poor recovery after drinking, an energy slump in the early afternoon, and a host of other conditions such as headaches and dry skin.

Fatty liver and fatigue

Because the liver is involved in metabolism (how your body uses and stores energy from food), it’s not a surprise that poor liver function can have you feeling exhausted. You may find that your energy is particularly bad after eating processed food compared to when you eat wholefoods. By following the dietary ideas below, your energy levels will start to improve.

How to improve liver function

It makes sense that if this disease was caused by too much sugar, white flour products, and deep-fried foods, that

reducing or eliminating these would be a great place to start.

Some foods that are good for your liver include:

- Leafy green vegetables: spinach, kale, roquette, cabbage, broccoli.

- Healthy fats: oily fish, olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds

- Protein: Unprocessed meat, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts & seeds.

- Whole Grains: Brown rice, quinoa, wholegrain bread and crackers.

Once you have fatty liver disease, you will need to make long term changes to your diet. The good news is that the foods that will help you to heal are foods you should be eating anyway for optimal health. It can be a long road, but there are many natural medicines to help repair the liver. I see such good results in my clinic with people’s energy levels in a short time after taking liver herbs, and there are some great herbal and nutritional products to improve metabolism and turn this disease around.

CITY AND KARDINIA PARK STADIUM TRUST

JOIN FORCES ON NEW MASTERPLAN

The City of Greater Geelong and Kardinia Park Stadium Trust (KPST) are working together to set the future vision of Kardinia Park. This work expands upon the earlier work from the City of Greater Geelong which was undertaken throughout 2022 and 2023.

Urbis has been engaged to facilitate a comprehensive consultation process to create a masterplan supported by all the park’s stakeholders and community –including City of Greater Geelong, Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, Geelong Football Club, Geelong Cricket Club, Geelong Central Netball Association, Netball Victoria, Kardinia Senior Citizens Club, St Mary’s Sporting Club, Geelong Football Umpires League and Kardinia Aquatic Centre.

This week, a future-focused visioning workshop was held to allow an extensive range of Geelong and precinct-based stakeholders the opportunity to discuss goals, objectives, inhibitors and enablers for a successful precinct.

There were facilitated discussions regarding amplifying benefits for Kardinia Park as well as reflections and conversations regarding other great sports and entertainment precincts around the world and what they are doing well.

This was the first step in the consultation process towards creating an aligned vision for the precinct.

The engagement sessions will continue with a series of workshops, due diligence and investigations involving both the park’s stakeholders and the broader community over the next six months.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan:

“The City of Greater Geelong manages 65 per cent of Kardinia Park – it’s a very significant place for both elite and community sport in our region, and this comprehensive process will give everyone the chance to have input on the reserve’s long term future.

We’re looking forward to productive discussions with all the stakeholders, and the broader community to create this new vision to support the community for the next 30 years.”

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust Chief Executive Gerard Griffin:

“The City of Greater Geelong and Kardinia Park Stadium Trust have engaged Urbis to facilitate a comprehensive vision for the entire Park and Precinct.

HOWZAT! NEW TRAINING FACILITY FOR MARSHALL CRICKET CLUB

A modern turf and hard wicket training facility is officially open at the home of the Marshall Cricket Club.

The Bears have been based at South Barwon Reserve on Barwon Heads Road, Belmont since 1934, where players made use of a three-pitch hard wicket training facility that was built in the 2000s and was in disrepair.

The $446,000 project was proudly funded by the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Programme ($237,000), Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund ($194,000) and Marshall Cricket Club ($15,000).

The City of Greater Geelong provided project support through the scoping and planning stages, facilitated the funding requirements and milestone reporting, and liaised between state and federal representatives.

The brand-new training facility is set to expand capacity at training sessions and boost participation rates for the club which has experienced significant growth.

The location of the old training nets, which didn’t meet current standards and provision levels, led to many training sessions being reduced down to two nets due to poor light from shadowing and wetness. This limitation reduced the training time available for both junior and senior training programs.

The new infrastructure includes sufficient storage for equipment used to maintain the facility and the club’s turf wicket for games.

Member for Corangamite Libby Coker

“These fantastic new facilities are funded with $237,000 from the Federal Government, $194,000 from the Victorian Government, and $15,000 from the club itself, and include a new turf and hard-wicket training facility that will help inspire a new generation of Aussie cricketers.

Boasting five senior teams, four junior boys’ teams and the ‘Blasters’ program with 30 participants, cricket is alive and well in Marshall and I hope these new facilities are enjoyed for many years to come.”

Christine Couzens MLA, Member for Geelong

“The State Government is proud to support the Marshall Cricket Club with their new training facilities.

I congratulate the club on their work to provide first class facilities for their members to enjoy, and to help the club grow in the future.”

Councillor Ron Nelson

“Council is proud to support Marshall Cricket Club through the process.

The City initiated the project and provided ongoing guidance to the club as it navigated the design and construction of the modern turf and hard wicket training facility.

The Bears can now cater for the significant growth it has experienced over the last few years as interest in cricket skyrockets among juniors and seniors.”

Construction will begin this month and is expected to finish by the end of June 2024.

Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Corio, the Hon. Richard Marles MP

St Helens is such a fantastic spot for fishing and families alike.

The Albanese Government is pleased to contribute to these new facilities, that will invigorate the area and ensure its continued enjoyment for the future.

Councillor Eddy Kontelj

It’s a beautiful place to visit and the new shelter will mean there’s extra undercover space for people enjoying BBQs or a picnic.

This is a project the Council has been looking to deliver for quite a while and we’re happy we now have the funding to do that thanks to the federal government.

With spectacular views across Corio Bay, St Helens Reserve features BBQ facilities, a playground and public toilets. It is also the access point for the St Helens Jetty.

The $435,000 in funding will come from the City’s allocation under Phase 3 of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

Lease opportunity in Council-owned Norlane buildings

The City of Greater Geelong has launched a search for community groups and businesses interested in leasing two Council-owned buildings in Norlane.

Previously home to a childcare centre known as City Learning and Care – Trudy Moritz and a maternal child health facility, the two buildings at 19 Sparks Road are now vacant.

This EOI process is an invitation for interested parties to demonstrate that the property will be suited to their organisation’s needs.

The buildings are intended to be leased together with a land area of approx. 1765 square metres.

It is likely that investment in renewing the facilities to make them fit for use will be required.

The community is also invited to have its say about the type of uses it would like to see in the buildings, and these responses will be considered as part of the City’s assessment of proposals.

The City will assess all submissions and may enter into a lease with a preferred business or organisation.

International Women’s Day celebrated with Women in Community Life Awards

The City, in partnership with the Women in Community Life Advisory Committee (WiCLAC), has celebrated International Women’s Day by acknowledging and honouring the extraordinary contributions and leadership roles of women across the region.

The 2024 Women in Community Life Awards recognised 29 women* nominated across seven categories: First Nations Woman, Climate Action, Disability Rights, Economic Empowerment, Education, Human Rights, and Leadership in Women’s Health.

Commencing in 2016, the annual awards acknowledge the contribution women have made to the Greater Geelong community and in particular, the impact they have made to promote and advocate for the advancement of gender equality.

The UN Women global theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Count Her In: Accelerating gender equality through economic empowerment.

These awards offer deserved acknowledgment to numerous women in Greater Geelong who have devoted themselves to enhancing our community.

We’ve been inspired by the stories of all our nominees — women who have demonstrated exceptional commitment in their professional and volunteer endeavours, enriching Geelong and improving the lives of its residents.

When reflecting on the remarkable efforts of all the nominees, it’s only right that we honour them on a global day dedicated to celebrating women’s contributions.

Sharing the stories of our region’s inspirational women ignites the spirit of community, fostering a vibrant and inclusive Geelong for everyone.

The 2024 award recipients are:

Leopold Tennis Pavilion Redevelopment

Underway as New Playground is Installed

A new local playground has been installed and the Leopold Tennis Pavilion Redevelopment project, situated at the Leopold Memorial Reserve on the corner of Melaluka Rd and Bellarine Hwy, continues to progress.

The existing playground was deconstructed and donated to the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds (RORP) program, which has now sent over two hundred playgrounds overseas to developing countries. These destinations include Fiji, Egypt, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Timor Leste, and Vanuatu.

Specifically, the former Leopold Recreation Reserve Playground is earmarked for Angeles, Philippines, as part of a larger shipment of 14 playgrounds, where they will be reinstalled by the local Rotary & Lions Clubs there.

The new playground installed at the south end of the reserve as a part of the Leopold Tennis Pavilion Redevelopment project, which was funded in the City’s 2022/23 budget as part of the Leopold Tennis Pavilion Redevelopment project, features colours selected to blend harmoniously with the natural environment.

Its new location at the south end was determined through consultation with users of the reserve, maintaining its proximity to the existing sporting club rooms.

Project construction commenced with the demolition of the old pavilion just before the end of last year, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the reserve.

The new upgraded facility will feature:

• a social space

• kiosk/kitchen

• internal and external storage

• female-friendly club amenities including showers

• toilets and accessible public toilet

• an accessible car bay

The upgrade was made possible thanks $1 million from Victorian Government’s Sport and Recreation 2022 – 23 Local Community Sport and Recreation Projects fund and $720,000 contributed by the City of Greater Geelong.

During the redevelopment process, existing public toilet facilities will remain available, with demolition scheduled upon the completion of works.

The City is evaluating community feedback on the draft concept plan for improvements to Highton’s five hectare Morena Street Reserve.

This hidden gem, running from Morena Street to Old Flour Mill Road, is a favourite among walkers, pet owners and families with its impressive views and limited road frontage. The steeply sloping site has a number of environmental, water management and accessibility factors to consider.

Greater Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan

The Leopold Memorial Reserve is not only used by local tennis enthusiasts, but it also serves local families too.

So, it is wonderful to see that the new playground has been installed and I trust it will be well used by the community for years to come.

Councillor Jim Mason

Ensuring there is adequate access to open spaces, play spaces and parks across the Bellarine ward is a high priority for Council.

Small local playgrounds play a vital role in fostering community cohesion and providing safe spaces for children to play, explore, and interact with their peers.

These types of playgrounds at reserves not only promote physical activity and healthy development but also serve as gathering points for families.

The Leopold Tennis Pavilion Redevelopment project will be complete in August.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

Public feedback is a vital part of the City’s planning for parks and recreation areas.

We thank community members from Highton and beyond for sharing their ideas and letting the team know how the draft concept plan for Morena Street Reserve can improve.

This data will inform our final concept plan, with the project to progress to detailed design this year.

Councillor Ron Nelson

Overwhelming support for proposed Morena Street Reserve works

The City’s draft concept plan proposes keeping the existing wetlands and $2.2 million in works to this undeveloped open space over three years. This includes new pedestrian paths, a grass kickabout space, improved drainage, new trees and vegetation, and seating.

Consultation last November and December saw 1,221 visitors visit our Have Your Say page, with nearly 95 per cent of contributors out of the 250 completed surveys and quick polls supporting the draft plan.

The Morena Street Reserve is a complex site with the footprint of an existing trail and drainage basin in the northern area.

This reserve is a bit of a hidden gem in Highton, with stunning views across the Barwon River, central Geelong and Corio Bay.

There are a lot of factors to consider and I’m looking forward to the final concept plan and works maximising the potential of this special space.

The ATO is currently reviewing claims made by R&D entities under the R&D tax incentive for expenditure incurred using the arrangements specified in these taxpayer alerts.

The ATO has urged entities that have entered, or are contemplating entering, into arrangements of concern to promptly engage with them.

Changes proposed for DGR status and charitable giving rules

The Federal Government released a draft report that proposes policy reforms to incentivise philanthropy and increase outcomes for donors, charities and taxpayers.

Several reforms to the administration and oversight of organisations with deductible gift recipient (DGR) status also came into effect on 1 January 2024.

The proposed and enacted reforms aim to facilitate firm foundations for the future of philanthropy, enabling greater donor choice and ensuring that regulation continues to support trust and confidence in charities.

The areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the tax deductibility of donations, regulatory framework and public information on charities and giving.

Tax deductions to be denied for interest charged by the ATO

After 1 July 2025, a proposed amendment to the tax law will mean that deductions will be denied for ATO interest charges, specifically the general interest charge (GIC) and shortfall interest charge (SIC).

GIC is incurred when tax debts have not been paid on time and SIC is incurred when a tax liability has been incorrectly self-assessed and resulted in a shortfall of tax paid.

Both GIC and SIC are currently tax-deductible for all entities. Removing the deduction is intended to encourage entities to correctly self-assess their tax liabilities and pay on time.

The ATO also imposes a late payment interest, which is not tax-deductible and excluded for the purposes of this measure.

Electric vehicle home charging expenses – guidance finalised

The ATO has finalised the practical compliance guideline which will assist taxpayers with calculating electricity costs relating to charging electric vehicles at home. In response to the surge in use of electric vehicles in Australia, provision of electric vehicles to employees or associates was recently made exempt from FBT (conditions applied)

From 1 April 2022 and 1 July 2022 for FBT and income tax purposes respectively, a cents per kilometer rate of 4.20 cents can be used to calculate electricity costs of charging an electric vehicle at residential premises. This guideline does not apply to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles which have internal combustion engines or are not considered low-emission vehicles.

This guideline also does not apply to electric motorcycles and electric scooters.

2024 TAX UPDATES

Incentivising pensioners back into the workforce – updates

Pensioners and those on Veterans' entitlements will be enticed back into the workforce with an increase to their work bonus concession balance. This measure is being supplemented with an increase to the time limit for the suspension of pension entitlement from 12 weeks to 2 years. This means if a pensioner earns too much income over a period of time, their pension will be suspended instead of cancelled.

Effective from 1 January 2024, all pensioners over pension age and eligible Veterans now have a maximum work bonus balance limit of $11,800 up from $7,800 and all new age pension recipients have a maximum work bonus income balance of $4,000 (previously nil). Also effective from 1 July 2024, employment income nil rate will be doubled to 24 weeks (previously 12 weeks) for income support recipients.

Guidance finalised for depreciation of composite items

The ATO has finalised guidance on whether an asset that is made up of a number of components (a composite item) is itself a depreciating asset, or whether one or more of its components are separate depreciating assets.

The Taxation Ruling TR 2024/1 provides the Commissioner’s view on identifying the relevant depreciating asset and hence its effective life and depreciation rate for the purposes of Div 40 of ITAA 1997.

Guiding principles have also been provided to help ascertain the level of “interest in the underlying asset” and apply the decline in value provisions for the purposes of s 40-35.

This Ruling does not address Div 43, which provides deductions for certain capital works expenditure.

FBT record-keeping simplification - upcoming changes

The Commissioner of Taxation now has the power to allow companies to reduce their FBT compliance costs by utilising other corporate tax records.

This measure reduces the complexity of FBT compliance obligations as employers can rely on other substantiation documents to finalise FBT returns.

Employers may still choose to use approved forms such as employee declarations and the prescribed forms detailing the fringe benefits provided to employees and associates if they wish. In some instances, it may benefit an employer to continue using standard FBT measures.

The effective start date for the change will be 1 April 2024 (commencement date of the 2025 FBT year).

Revised stage 3 tax cuts now law

The Labor government announced changes to personal tax rates that will provide a tax cut for every Australian taxpayer commencing from 1 July 2024.

Changing the original course of action, as announced by the previous Coalition government, the new tax changes aim to focus on the low and middle income earners and provide cost-of-living relief.

The Medicare levy low-income thresholds for 2023-24 have also been increased, reducing or eliminating the amount of Medicare levy paid by Australians on lower incomes.

The bills amending income tax rate thresholds, tax rates for individuals and Medicare levy low-income thresholds, have now received Parliamentary approval to become law.

Do you know that the number one item stolen from cars is number plates? Crooks want your number plates so they can affix them to stolen cars, in turn using that car to commit a variety of other crimes.

Affixing tamper proof or one way screws to your number plates is a simple and worthwhile way to prevent crime. Having “Safe Plates” offers several benefits:

1. Deterrence: The presence of tamper-proof screws sends a clear message that the plates are secured and tampering with them is difficult. This can actas a deterrent for potential thieves who may be looking for an easy target.

2. Reduced Theft: Tamper-proof screws make it more challenging for thieves to steal license plates. The added difficulty may dissuade individuals who are looking for quick and easy targets, reducing the overall incidence of theft.

3. Prevention of Misuse: Stolen license plates are sometimes used in the commission of crimes, such as robberies, hit-and-runs, or other illegal activities. By securing plates with tamper-proof screws, the likelihood of such misuse is diminished.

4. Cost Savings for Vehicle Owners: When license plates are stolen, vehicle owners may face costs related to replacing the plates, reporting the theft to authorities, and dealing with potential legal issues arising from the misuse of the stolen plates. The use of tamper-proof screws can help mitigate these costs by preventing theft in the first place.

5. Enhanced Security: One-way screws are designed in a way that makes it easy to install them but difficult to remove. This ensures that the plates remain securely attached to the vehicle, providing enhanced security against tampering.

6. Removal: If you wish to remove the plates – perhaps on the sale of your vehicle or to fit personalised plates, you can remove the screws with a special removal tool. Most police stations will have this tool as do some of our Neighbourhood Watch Groups. Call us for more info.

We Have The Power: MCM Launches Sleep At The ’G 2024 to address youth homelessness

Now in its 11th year, the highly anticipated MCM Sleep At The ‘G event, launched at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on 29 February, is set to take place on Thursday, 16 May.

A key highlight on the Victorian events calendar, this unique blend of fun and fundraising promises an unforgettable experience for all participants. Popular MC and entertainer, Geraldine Quinn, graced the launch alongside Melbourne Football Club players Sarah Lampard and Tahlia Gillard.

Victorians are invited to embrace the power of community by registering online to sleep at the MCG, enjoying a full program of activities, entertainment and community connections. Participants – known as sleepers – will gain insights into the challenges facing young people experiencing homelessness in Victoria, hearing their stories firsthand. The event strikes a balance between awareness and enjoyment, including an outstanding lineup of live music, games, DJ, fashion parade, and exciting prizes. The night will also offer a variety of well-being activities for participants to enjoy, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Sleepers will witness the community unite in a shared desire to drive positive impact encapsulated only through the spirit that is Sleep At The ‘G. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Sean Spencer, Acting Chief Executive Officer of MCM, expressed his commitment to the cause, stating, “It’s a fun night for a serious issue. We’re proud to build on the previous success of this event again in 2024, raising awareness and embracing the power of community. I urge all Victorians to come together to be part of this memorable experience.”

Renae Johnston, MCM’s Philanthropy, Partnerships & Branding General Manager, emphasised the impact of funds raised, noting, “Funds raised from Sleep At The ‘G in 2024 will enable critical services to be provided to young people who have experienced significant trauma and homelessness. Homelessness is never a choice, but unfortunately a reality for too many young people in Victoria.”

In 2023, the collective efforts of the community and corporate sector raised an incredible $780,000, contributing to the construction of accommodation for Victoria’s homeless youth.

This year, the goal is to kick the ball out of the park and raise more than $1 million!

About MCM (Melbourne City Mission)

MCM is one of the oldest not for profits in Victoria. MCM for 170 years has been committed to driving systemic change including to end youth homelessness. MCM witnesses daily young people seeking safe, stable, and affordable housing. With your help we have the power to change this.

The Youth Homelessness Crisis

Every night in Australia 122,494 people are estimated to be experiencing homelessness. That is more people than the MCG on a sold our AFL Grand Final day! Over 30,000 of these people are Victorian and over 7,600 are aged 12–24 years old. MCM has the largest provision of refuges in the state, and our refuges are full. Many young people are waiting at the doors of a refuge after leaving institutional care or escaping violent homes. Homelessness is usually a result of other forms of disadvantage building to a crisis. Family violence, abuse and mental health are the major drivers into homelessness for young people. But once they become homeless, they face even more dangerous situations; sleeping rough, in unsafe

housing, couch surfing and many others that leave them vulnerable to danger and risks. The longer homelessness lasts, the harder it is for a young person to rebuild their lives.

Homelessness becomes a cycle–surviving from one day to the next. Without the support of organisations like MCM, a young person can become further entrenched in long term homelessness, increasing trauma and poverty, losing all hope of reaching their full potential. We know that 50% of adults experiencing long-term homelessness were homeless as young people. Breaking this cycle is vital to give young people their best chance of a better life.

Funds raised from one night sleepover at the MCG will provide stable, supportive homes to help young Victorians become independent, thriving adults.

Nationally, in 2021 nearly a quarter (23.0%) of all people experiencing homelessness were aged from 12 to 24 years (28,204 people). The rate of homelessness for young people aged 12-24 years grew by 15%. Each night in Victoria, there are only 127 beds available across 17 youth refuges. A lengthy wait list often poses a challenge. This is where your generosity can make a difference. Donations allow caseworkers to explore alternative shortterm accommodation until a bed in a refuge becomes available.

According to March 2023 data on young people coming to MCM for homelessness support, 4 in 10 (40.7%) 16 to 24 year olds experienced a significant and episodic mental health crisis, with many instances so severe they led to emergency department presentation. Of the 12,000 15 to 24 year olds, who came to a Victorian Specialist Homelessness Service alone in2021-22, many had complex mental health issues linked to and often driven by their experiences of homelessness at such a young age.

The benefits of laughter become the benefits of a growing and successful business.

Laughter in the workplace offers numerous benefits, contributes to a positive and healthy environment, and has been shown to boost performance, improve morale, engagement and creativity, while generating a more enjoyable and innovative work atmosphere.

Workplaces all over the world introduce laughter yoga to their staff because of its strong team building and stress management elements. Studies indicate that enhanced employees’ moods and overall well-being resulted in employees being 10% more productive.

Laughter may be productivity’s best medicine as it reduces stress , boosts immunity, creates resilience, fights depression, and acts as a coping mechanism to pain. A laughter yoga session can be a fun and effective method to add a sense of well-being to the work environment.

Experience the benefits of laughter yoga firsthand on any Saturday morning at Eastern Beach in front of the swimming enclosure at 9:00am.

135 Corporate Dash

Who will take the crown of fastest corporate leader?

On Friday the 17th of May business leaders from across Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine will leap from the barriers to sprint, jog or swagger 135 metres along the home straight at Geelong Racing Club, all in support of Lifeline Geelong.

This lively and friendly competition has been dubbed 135 Corporate Dash – the number 135 representing the estimated number of people who are affected by each life lost tragically to suicide (family, friends, first responders).

To earn a place in the barrier, business leaders will need to raise a minimum of $1,500 for Lifeline Geelong by signing-up at 135-corporate-dash.raiselysite.com

Up for grabs is the coveted title of fastest corporate leader in town and bragging rights of unmatched proportions!

You can help them dash for the finish line by making a donation to an already registered business leader or by nominating another business leader to take the challenge.

Over 20,500 calls are made to Lifeline from the Geelong region each year – that is 56 calls from local people in crisis every day. Head of Corporate and Community Partnerships (Vic), Michael Parker said many people don’t realise local Lifeline centres rely on donations and fundraising to keep services running. It costs $3,500 to train and support each crisis supporter. Each call to Lifeline costs around $39.

“A Lifeline crisis supporter takes on average 220 calls per year and each call from a help seeker lasts approximately 19.5 minutes,” Mr Parker said.

Businesses from a variety of industries are already signing up. Will an IT guru saunter past a sparky? Will a mortgage broker get a lead on a lawyer? Adding an extra dash of fun, some business leaders are planning creative and themed racing attire to encourage extra donations. So get behind a business leader that inspires you and make a donation at 135-corporate-dash.raiselysite.com

“Every donation made to 135 Corporate Dash will stay here in the Geelong community and support our local centre helping Lifeline answer every call,” said Mr Parker.

Eight Australians die every day by suicide and more than 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt each year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians between the ages of 15 and 44.

To register, nominate or donate visit geelongswv.lifeline.org.au

Project Connect Ensemble

A dynamic physical theatre work

New Australian Theatre Work Shines Spotlight on Loneliness, Aloneness, and Social Disconnection

Inspired by the profound experiences of disconnection shared by many in our community, the groundbreaking theatrical production, a/lone, delves into the depths of loneliness while uncovering the transformative power of embracing solitude and connecting with community.

Developed by the Project Connect Ensemble and written and directed by the accomplished Janine McKenzie, a/lone is a dynamic original production that explores the human condition with a unique blend of humour and pathos. Combining physical, absurd, and verbatim theatre techniques, accompanied by an evocative live original score by Sheshtin Honey, the production promises an unforgettable journey of insight and connection.

Featuring performances by Xavier McGettigan, Stacey Carmichael, and Emily Jacker-Lawrence, and designed by the talented Alard Pett, a/lone made its debut with a sell-out Australian premiere performance at the Geelong Arts Centre in 2023. Its success continued as it captivated audiences at the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, earning international acclaim.

Director Janine McKenzie expressed her enthusiasm for sharing this important conversation on the international stage, stating, “Audiences will see themselves and people they love in the stories we tell. This performance resonates deeply and continues to stay with you long after you leave the theatre.”

Originally developed through Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine, after Producer and Performer, Stacey Carmichael, was awarded one of the two 2023 Ignition Grants, a/lone reflects the commitment of Geelong Arts Centre to showcase extraordinary stories and champion connections through art.

a/lone is a timely exploration of an important topic, raising awareness about loneliness in Australia where 1 in 3 Australians feel lonely, 1 in 6 report severe levels of loneliness, and 1 in 2 Australians are embarrassed to talk about it. The production aims to open up the conversation and encourage greater engagement with oneself, others and organisations as a means of combatting loneliness.

Josephine Balfour-Oatts of The Scotsman praised a/lone, stating, “The work is realized with warmth and generosity as it considers whether a greater engagement with the self might be a worthwhile and effective means of combating loneliness, asking: if you are attending to and investing in your own company, are you ever really alone?”

a/lone is part of the VCAA VCE Drama Playlist and will tour Victoria Feb-June, 2024. Kicking off in Geelong this month and finishing at the iconic La Mama Theatre, Melbourne.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.

The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.

We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.

FC Leopold is a community club that fields senior mens teams, a senior womens team and multiple miniroos and junior teams in Geelong competitions.

LOCAL EVENTS

The Program

This is a program that shows you how to get to the heart of true leadership, for emergent leaders who are looking to step up or established leaders who know their stuff but can’t quite get it moving the way they envision it.

Together, we traverse 3 themes over 6 weeks. We build on the ability to lead self, lead team and lead through challenges.

The first stage finds leaders finally ‘getting’ why some things work for them and some things don’t, and then they learn how to displace their personal energy to attend to it all.

The leader then moves into new ways of thinking, using a framework to avoid or pinpoint challenges, one that outlines the steps needed to create a healthy, purposeful, connected, results-driven culture. The leader will learn how to align the team to his/her own strengths, vision and values for ultimate outcome - collaboration, acceptance, drive and everyone working together towards the same common goal.

We don’t leave it there though, because we know this probably won’t be a smooth ride. There’ll be tough decisions to make, difficult conversations to have and moments of feeling like it’s time to give up but instead, the leader must face it all; rise up and lead the way.

So we give our leaders the tools they need to deal with these uncertainties AND improve the quality of all their relationships - promoting unity yet individuality, performance yet not conformance.

All this for 2 hours a week, over 6 inspiring weeks. We’ll wrap up with a personal 1 on 1 chat where we’ll go over the leaders personalised plan or cover questions about future planning and success ideas.

Move into the Christmas season (and 2024) with the confidence and certainty of knowing who you are and what matters, as a leader.

Our Journey

Begin 2024 with purpose, connection and the skill to guide your people to autonomously operate the system while you effectively navigate and scope the most well-rounded possible plans.

I’ve bundled up the stuff I know that matters with the tools I know that work, to give every leader the fundamental ability to be the True Character of Self Leadership.

back to back theatre season 2024

At a time like this, in a placeless warehouse, three employees approach a possibly pointless task. Struggling to work together, they grapple with questions of inclusion, identity and intersectionality. They are forced to test the limits of their bodies, their cooperation and their capacity to care. Civility slips, bad behaviour escalates and reality distorts. The witching hour is here. Who will be the scapegoat?

In the making of this new work, Back to Back Theatre invites new voices into the devising room. Zoë Barry’s score is assembled from collected field recordings of bad things. Anna Cordingley’s design demands the actors’ physical participation to reach its manifestation.

MULTIPLE BAD THINGS is theatre. It is not real. But in a world where self-righteously indignant voices so often drown out the most disenfranchised and vulnerable, this theatre sometimes feels real.

Welcome to the workplace at the end of the world. They’re only saying what you’ve already been thinking.

Brilliant Bruhn Hits New Heights In Easter Monday Triumph

Tanner Bruhn produced arguably the best performance of his career to date to help Geelong continue their unbeaten start to the season with a 36-point win against Hawthorn at the MCG on Monday.

Bruhn finished with a career-high 27-disposals, 15 coming in a scintillating first term which saw the Cats pile on seven goals to one.

The 21-year-old stepped up in the absence of skipper Patrick Dangerfield to lead the Cats for contested possessions (15), clearances (9) and centre clearances (5).

“It was a massive effort from all of the boys today but on a personal note I’ve felt like I’ve improved as the weeks have gone by and hopefully can help keep the good work up,” Bruhn told geelongcats.com.au post-game.

After a fast start the Cats were challenged by the Hawks in that second term, but Geelong responded well swinging back the momentum their way in the third term before lightning hit and saw the game delayed.

“It caught a lot of the boys by surprise, but we got back out there.”

“We probably didn’t start (final quarter) the way we like but I thought we finished the game well regardless of the circumstances. It was a full team effort tonight and the boys were good.”

Bruhn was well supported in the midfield by Mitch Duncan (26 disposals, 1 goal) and Brandan Parfitt (21 disposals, 10 tackles). While ruck Toby Conway did some nice things in just his second AFL game with 18 hitouts, 11 disposals, 2 clearances and a goal.

Geelong sits fourth on the ladder at the conclusion of Round 3, just percentage behind the top placed GWS Giants.

The Cats next challenge will see them travel to Adelaide for Gather Round to play the seventh placed Western Bulldogs on Saturday at 8.10pm AEDT.

Geelong’s new seatless terrace lets AFL fans stand up for revived tradition

• Safe-standing area can fit 2,000 spectators on their feet

• Cats face St Kilda in AFL round one at GMHBA Stadium

The AFL’s newest grandstand has set aside a place for thousands to watch matches on their feet, the most prominent example of a new trend of sporting venues embracing a seatless spectator experience.

Geelong will play St Kilda on Saturday in the first match of the season at the newly refurbished GMHBA Stadium, widely known as Kardinia Park, marking the completion of the five-stage redevelopment and the opening of the 14,000-capacity Selwood Stand.

Cats midfielder Max Holmes said the team was looking forward to playing in front of the new grandstand, the construction of which was delayed by almost a year.

“I’m really excited to see what it’s like, I think the whole stand is really cool but that bit [the standing area] especially is pretty awesome,” he said.

The capacity of the venue is now 40,000 and, thanks to a joint decision of the club and stadium trust, more than 2,000 of those are reserved for patrons who want to watch the match without a seat.

The area has been named the Ablett Terrace in honour of the entire Ablett clan, and is a nod to the demolished Gary Ablett Terrace, which included space for a similar number of standing spectators.

The chief executive of the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, Gerard Griffin, said sporting venues had to cater to different tastes and demographics.

“You’ve still got to have your corporate suites but equally, you’ve got to have your standing room areas to be able to say you’ve got something for everyone,” he said.

All 2,300 tickets in the standing room section have already been sold for Saturday’s game. At $30 an adult they are the same price as other general admission tickets, but half the price of a reserved seat elsewhere.

Australia’s major sporting venues have largely become all-seater arenas in recent decades, as the tradition of terraces has been tested by international stadium disasters.

Only some exceptions remain, but these are largely the result of a lack of development or a decision to preserve traditional grassed areas.

“Because people fundamentally love congregating together, hanging out, eating, drinking and standing and watching together.”

One is Adelaide Oval’s hill adjacent to the forward pocket in which Eddie Betts performed much of his work during his period at the Crows. Similar places exist in rugby league’s suburban grounds, like the prominent hill at Leichhardt Oval.

Yet there is now a global trend away from jamming in as many seats as possible into stadium designs.

The requirement for all-seater arenas in the English Premier League, brought in following the 1989 Hillsbrough disaster, has been relaxed in recent years and clubs can now apply for licenses for fans to occupy safe-standing areas.

And in North America, the Toronto Blue Jays’ baseball ground has recently removed 8,000 seats to establish places described as “social areas” and “gathering spaces”.

“Baseball stadiums in the US are pulling out seats and converting to standing room,” Griffin said.

In Australia, Sydney’s two recently built rectangular stadiums Commbank and Allianz include convertible standing areas behind the goals, largely to facilitate active football supporters.

Alex Stevenson, a 73-year-old Cats fan will be enjoying Saturday’s match from his reserved seat. But he said he had fond memories of watching games in the 1960s from the standing area as a teenager.

“You get a few cans of beer that you could stand on to look over people’s heads and so on,” he said.

He said the stadium’s commitment to standing areas has allowed a larger cross-section of the traditionally workingclass Geelong community to watch the games, and the decision to retain the area respects this tradition.

“That’s progressive the way I would see it,” Stevenson said.

The new Abblet Terrace is also set to take on a new character. The standing patrons have been moved from the back of the old terrace much closer to the action, and with the higher angle of the stand the area sits ominously above the forward pocket.

“As we’ve seen with Adelaide Oval,” Griffin said, “hopefully it will become a sort of ‘extra man’ factor for the team and I think you will find the players will try and draw in that part of the ground to promote their barracking and support of the team in critical moments.”

Holmes said he “hopes it gets a bit crazy up there”.

April 2024 & AGED CARE

Age Pension rate changes

RETIREMENT

For most Australians over 65, the age pension is still the most significant source of income according to Rice Warner. Roughtly 39% of Australians over Age Pension Age, receive the full pension and 24% receive a part pension.

So how much income does the Age Pension provide you?

New Age Pension Rates (from 20 March 2024)

From 20 March 2024 the maximum full Age Pension increases $19.60 per fortnight for a single person, and $14.70 per person per fortnight for a couple.

The rates for a full Age Pension for Australian residents for the period 20 March 2024 to 19 September 2024 are listed below:

• Single: $1,116.30 per fortnight (approximately $29,028 per year)

• Couple (each): $841.40 per fortnight (approximately $21,876 per year)

• Couple (combined): $1,682.80 per fortnight (approximately $43,753 per year)

• Couples separated due to illness each receive the Single rate (see above), which combined is $2,232.60 (approximately $58,048 per year)

Note: Annual amounts are approximate. The figures above include the pension and energy supplements.

The tables below provide more detail in terms of the latest increase and how the Age Pension is broken down.

Source: Services Australia. Applicable 20 March 2024 to 19 September 2024 *Annual amounts are approximate.

Next Age Pension increase may be in September.

It is unclear whether or not September will bring with it another increase in the Age Pension rates. This is because the Australian Bureau of Statistics evaluates these increases based on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Male Total Average Weekly Earnings, and the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index. In September 2020 the Age Pension rates did not increase, although that was for the first time since 1997. If this happens again this September, then we might not see an increase. Let’s hope, for those retirees, there is a change in CPI allowing for the increase in the Age Pension. With the cost of living increasing, we know that retirees need all they can get.
