The Royal Geelong Show:

A Celebration of Agriculture, Community and Heritage

Since its founding in 1855, the Royal Geelong Show has grown into one of Victoria’s most enduring regional traditions, embodying the spirit of rural life and the pride of its community.

A Brief History and Those Who Started It

The event came into being shortly after the formation of the Geelong and Western District Agricultural and Horticultural Society (now the Royal Geelong Agricultural & Pastoral Society Inc.). Its first meeting was held on 24 February 1855 at the Masonic Hall in Geelong. That meeting was presided over by Horatio Spencer Howe Wills, a pastoralist, settler and public figure who had settled in the region at “Belle Vue.”

The Society’s first Show took place in that same year, featuring exhibits of livestock, horticulture, and a ploughing competition. Over time, permanent showgrounds were secured, buildings erected (though some were lost to fire or storms), and the Show evolved in size and scope.

Activities, Competitions and Prizes

The Royal Geelong Show offers a wide variety of competitions, activities, displays and entertainment. Here are some highlights:

• Agricultural and Livestock Displays: Cattle (dairy and beef), sheep, poultry, miniature goats, rabbits, dogs, and more are all exhibited and judged.

• Homecraft & Horticulture: Arts & crafts, cookery, woodwork, floral art, photography, woolcraft and more— both for novices and experienced exhibitors.

• Vintage Machinery & Rural Heritage: Displays of machinery, tools, stationary engines and demonstrations recalling early farming and pastoral practices.

• Arena & Entertainment Events: Including equestrian events, woodchopping, sideshows, rides, showbags, local produce stalls, live music, free entertainment performances (such as stunt shows), interactive displays for children (like farmyard animal meets), etc.

As for prizes, there are many opportunities for winners across different competition categories to be rewarded. Some specifics:

• Blue Ribbon competitions: Flagship awards for top exhibits in livestock, produce, homecraft, etc.

• Monetary Prizes & Trophies: In many classes, 1st, 2nd and 3rd places receive monetary awards or vouchers, plus ribbons or cups. For example, in the Homecraft schedule, first prize, second prize, and third prize amounts are assigned in many classes.

• Special Prizes: For example, special recognitions like “Humble Backyard Chicken” in poultry, special awards in junior or novice classes, and in some years, school competition awards, ambassador-style awards.

When and Where

• Dates for 2025: Thursday 16 October through Sunday 19 October.

• Venue: The Geelong Showgrounds, located at 79 Breakwater Road, East Geelong (Breakwater), Victoria, on Wadawurrung country.

Community Call to Action

To all residents of Geelong and surrounding districts: mark your calendars and bring your family, friends, crafts, animals and competitive spirit to this year’s Royal Geelong Show. Whether you’re submitting an exhibit, competing in livestock or homecraft, or simply coming to enjoy the festivities, there’s something here for everyone.

Why you shouldn’t miss it:

• It’s a powerful celebration of our agricultural roots, showcasing the skills, produce, and artistry of our community.

• It gives local farmers, hobbyists, artisans, children, schools, and volunteers a platform to shine, compete, learn and connect.

• Socially, it strengthens bonds: families and neighbours gathering, volunteering together, creating memories. Economically, local businesses, food producers, and showbag vendors all benefit from the influx of visitors.

• It offers both entertainment and education: children especially gain hands-on familiarity with animals, machinery, and nature, plus opportunities to enter competitions.

So come along, participate, spectate, and support. Enter a competition, volunteer your time, bring a picnic or explore new stalls. Let’s make the Royal Geelong Show 2025 a vivid reminder of who we are: a community proud of its agricultural heritage, creative endeavours, and the generosity of spirit that comes from celebrating together. Be there—your presence makes the Show richer.

BOOKKEEPING

Pricing a product or service is one of the most critical decisions a business owner must make. Charge too much, and you risk scaring away potential customers. Charge too little, and you might not cover your costs or earn the profit you need to sustain and grow your business.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand how to determine the right price for your product or service using smart pricing strategies.

1. Understand Your Costs

The first step in pricing is understanding all of the costs involved in delivering your product or service. These costs typically break down into two categories:

• Fixed Costs: These are costs that remain constant, regardless of how much you produce or sell. They include things like rent, utilities, software subscriptions, and salaried employees.

• Variable Costs: These fluctuate depending on how much you produce or sell. Materials, hourly wages, packaging, and shipping costs all fall under this category.

Once you’ve calculated both fixed and variable costs, you can figure out your break-even point-the minimum number of sales you need to cover both types of costs. This is crucial, as it ensures that your pricing will at least allow you to avoid losses.

2. Analyse the Market

Next, you’ll want to research the market. Understanding what your competitors charge is an essential part of the pricing strategy. However, just copying your competitors isn’t always the best approach. Look at:

• Direct Competitors: These are businesses offering similar products or services. What price range do they offer, and how does your product compare in terms of quality and features?

• Indirect Competitors: These may not be offering exactly what you do, but they still capture your potential customers’ attention. For example, a local bakery might compete with a coffee shop that offers pre-packaged pastries.

• Customer Expectations: What do your customers value most? Are they looking for premium quality, or are they more focused on affordability? This can help you position your price in a way that aligns with what your target market expects.

3. Factor in Profit Margin

One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is not accounting for the profit margin. After covering all your costs, you need to ensure that you’re making a profit. Profit margin is typically calculated as a percentage of the cost of goods sold (COGS). A common rule of thumb for small businesses is to target a profit margin between 10% and 20%, though this can vary depending on the industry.

For instance, if your total cost per product is $50, and you want a 20% profit margin, you would add $10 to the cost (for a total price of $60). This ensures that your pricing strategy not only covers costs but also allows for sustainable growth.

4. Consider Psychological Pricing

Psychological pricing can have a powerful impact on your sales. For instance, pricing something at $99.99 instead of $100 can trigger a perception of a better deal, even though the difference is just one cent.

In addition to this “charm pricing,” consider tiered pricing strategies, bundling, or offering discounts for bulk purchases. Offering multiple price points or subscription-based pricing can also appeal to different customer segments and encourage repeat business.

Another side to Psychological Pricing is to deliberately have a higher price point to your competitors to have a higher perceived value. Be sure though that your product or service

Conclusion

can stand up to this expectation as it can very quickly crumble if people realise your product is in fact inferior.

5. Test and Adjust

Even with all the research and calculations in place, pricing is not a one-time decision. Over time, customer behaviour, market conditions, and your business costs can change. That’s why it’s important to test your pricing strategy. You might try offering a new product at a slightly higher price to see how customers respond or provide limited-time discounts to see if they increase sales volume.

By tracking your sales data and monitoring customer feedback, you’ll be able to adjust your pricing strategy as needed, ensuring long-term profitability.

Pricing is both an art and a science. By carefully calculating costs, understanding market conditions, factoring in profit margins, and considering psychological pricing techniques, you can find a price point that supports your financial goals.

In the end, the right price isn’t just about what customers are willing to pay—it’s about creating a balanced strategy that ensures your business can thrive in both the short and long term.

Waiting for Better Systems?

Here’s what to do while you wait

We’ve all been there.

Working in a system that feels clunky, outdated, or just flat-out unhelpful... where doing your job feels harder than it needs to be. It’s frustrating. And it’s tempting to believe that if only the system changed, everything else would fall into place.

But the trap is, if we lean too hard on blaming the system, we start to let ourselves off the hook.

Instead of stepping up, we start stepping back

Conversations get avoided. Decisions get delayed. The energy drops. And before we know it, we’re in a holding pattern, waiting for someone else to fix it.

That’s exactly what happened to a leader I coached recently. Let’s call him Belmont’s Manager.

His organisation’s workplace systems were clunky. Slow processes, unclear expectations, and no consistent way to track who was doing what.

Fair enough, it was a mess. But the bigger issue? He froze. He let that chaos justify not stepping in and leading.

He told himself, “What’s the point? Nothing sticks here anyway.”

And that mindset started leaking out to the team. They stopped taking ownership. Productivity flatlined. Morale dropped. No one was willing to go first... including him.

The turnaround didn’t come from a new system rollout or flashy new tools.

It came the moment he took ownership.

He stopped waiting for someone else to clean it up and started shaping the environment he could control:

• He set clearer expectations.

• Built simple rhythms the team could trust.

• Raised the bar (and followed through!).

Bit by bit, the culture shifted. Accountability increased. The team felt steadier. And he finally felt like a leader again... not just a firefighter.

And what hits hard the most? The systems didn’t change. He did.

And that’s the point.

You don’t need perfect systems to lead well. You need ownership.

Whether you’re leading a team, running a club, or simply trying to make something better where you are - the shift starts when you stop waiting and start leading from within

Want to go deeper on understanding and creating this shift?

On Wednesday, 15 October, I’m hosting a free  Lunch & Learn session to unpack how to lead from clarity - even when the pressure’s on and the systems aren’t great.

Email me at  hello@sallyh.au for details or to reserve your spot.

You’ll walk away with a fresh lens, practical tools, and a way to reset how you lead… without needing permission from anyone else.

Updated guidance on home charging expenses for plug-in hybrid vehicles

ACCOUNTANT

The ATO has released a draft guideline (PCG 2024/2DC) to calculate the electricity costs of charging an electric vehicle or PHEV at a taxpayer’s residential premises if they use either an electric vehicle or PHEV in gaining or producing their assessable income.

It outlines a method for calculating the cost of electricity when an EV or PHEV is charged at an employee’s or individual’s home. Taxpayers may choose to apply a rate of 4.20 cents per kilometre travelled in an FBT or income year.

Guidance previously provided by the ATO in PCG 2024/2 excluded PHEVs from applying the cents per kilometre rate of 4.20 cents (shortcut method), which can be used to calculate the electricity costs of charging an EV at a residential premises.

Fringe benefits tax

If an employer provides an employee or associate with an EV or PHEV that leads to the provision of car, residual, or expense payment benefits, as per this draft guideline, the employee or associate will have the option to use the shortcut method, i.e., a rate of 4.20 cents per kilometre travelled to calculate the taxable value of such benefits.

Income tax deductions

The shortcut method can also be used by an individual taxpayer to calculate work-related car expenses for income tax purposes. When using the logbook method, for a motor vehicle that is not a car, a deduction may also be claimed by calculating the total kilometres travelled by the vehicle during an income year.

Methodology

for calculating home charging costs for PHEVs

Step 1: Calculate actual petrol costs vs electricity costs for the FBT or income year.

Start by gathering the petrol receipts for the financial year. Alternatively, use the total petrol spent divided by the official average petrol price for the respective state.

Step 2: Calculate total petrol kilometres

Calculate the total petrol kilometres travelled by the PHEV during the year by converting the petrol amount into litres using the PHEV’s petrol consumption rate (divide petrol costs calculated in step 1 by the petrol consumption rate.

Step 3: Calculate total annual kilometres

Subtract your petrol kilometres from your total odometer reading for the period. The difference represents the distance travelled on electric power. Multiply the electric kilometres travelled by the cents per kilometre rate of 4.20 to calculate the home charging cost for your PHEV.

Eligibility for making a claim

To be eligible to apply this method, yearly odometer readings, logbooks, and at least one electricity bill must be maintained/obtained.

Adopting this methodology is optional, and a taxpayer may choose to opt out/ opt in every year.

5 FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGNS THAT ACTUALLY WORK (and how to make them thrive)

DIGITAL MEDIA

What if your next fundraising campaign didn’t just meet expectations-but shattered them?

If you’re aiming to boost donations, expand your reach, or build lasting donor relationships, it’s not about working harder-it’s about working smarter.

These five powerful campaigns aren’t just ideas-they’re proven strategies that inspire action and deliver real, measurable results.

Peer-to-Peer Fundraising: Empower your Supporters

Peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising isn’t just a trend-it’s one of the most eff ective ways to organically grow your NFP’s donor base. It empowers your supporters to fundraise on your behalf as individuals reach out to friends, family and colleagues, tapping into personal networks to spread your not-for-profit’s message.

92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family over any other form of advertising (Nielsen), making P2P fundraising a fantastic avenue for successful NFP campaigns. Plus, peer-topeer campaigns typically raise twice as much as traditional fundraising eff orts because they reach wider audiences.

The key to success is equipping your fundraisers with the right tools, such as social media templates, email scripts, and easy-to-use donation pages, to make the process accessible and enjoyable. Recognising top fundraisers with shoutouts or small rewards can also keep motivation high.

Success Story:

November’s global campaign is a great example, raising over $1 billion worldwide by turning personal stories into powerful fundraising tools. The combination of humour, personal connection, andglobalparticipation makes it one of the most effective peer-to-peer campaigns ever.

Seasonal Giving Campaigns: Capitalise on Key Moments

Seasonal giving campaigns align with key dates like Giving Tuesday, EOFY appeals, and the holiday season-times when people are naturally more inclined to give. Giving Tuesday alone raised over $3.1 billion in the U.S. in 2022, and 30% of all annual donations happen in December, with 10% occurring in the final three days of the year. By leaning into seasonal giving campaigns, your NFP can use these giving trends to increase fundraising throughout the year.

Creating urgency through countdowns, limited-time donation matches, or highlighting specific goals can significantly boost results.

Success Story:

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaignisaseasonalstaple, raising over $100 million annually during the holidays through both physical donation kettles and online giving platforms. Its recognisable branding and community engagement make it a model for successful seasonal giving.

Social Media Campaigns: Use the Power of Storytelling

As we discussed in our January Newsletter, social media is a powerful tool for notfor-profits, especially when it’s used to tell compelling stories. Story-driven campaigns can humanize your NFP’s cause which in turn creates emotional connections that inspire action. Focusing on real people and authentic stories that reflect the heart of your not-for-profit’s mission engages audiences. Short, emotional videos perform extremely well on social media such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. You can further engage with your fundraising campaign by encouraging followers to share their own stories and use dedicated hashtags to spread your NFP’s reach.

Success Story:

Charity:Water’s#WhyWatercampaign is a perfect example, using personal stories from communities impacted by clean water projects to create a global movement that has helped over 15 million people. Their simple, powerful storytelling approach turns donors into passionate advocates.

Recurring Giving Campaigns: Build Long-Term Support

While one-time donations are important, recurring giving campaigns create a steady, reliable stream of income. Over one year, monthly donors give 42% more than one-time donors and have a retention rate of 90%, compared to 46% for one-time contributors.

Highlighting the convenience and longterm impact of monthly donations can turn casual supporters into lifelong advocates of your not-for-profit. Offering exclusive updates or behind-the-scenes content on projects occurring within your NFP helps keep these donors engaged.

Success Story:

World Vision’s Child Sponsorship Program is a shining example of a successful recurring giving campaign. Donors receive regular updates, photos, and personal stories about the child they’re sponsoring, creating an emotional connection that fosters long-term support-often lasting for years.

Event-Based Fundraising: Create Memorable Experiences

Events, whether in-person or virtual, are another fantastic way to raise funds for your NFP and strengthen community ties. Fundraising events can account for up to 35% of annual donations for many organisations, including NFP’s and 84% of attendees say they’re more likely to donate after participating. The rise of virtual events has expanded reach even further, increasing participation by 30% in many cases.

Combining ticket sales with activities like raffles, auctions, or donation challenges for projects or a mission in your NFP can maximise revenue while fostering a sense of belonging among supporters.

Ethan Strybosch

Success Story:

The Global Citizen Festival blends entertainmentwithactivism, attracting millions of participants worldwide. By leveraging celebrity influence, live music, and powerful advocacy messages, it drives not just donations but also policy changes and global awareness for critical causes.

Key Takeaways for Campaign Success in Your Not-for-profit

• Personal Connections Matter: Authentic, emotional stories resonate more than generic appeals.

• Urgency Drives Action: Campaigns with time-sensitive goals or donation matches perform better.

• Diversify Your Channels: Combine email, social media, events, and paid ads for maximum reach.

• Consistency Builds Trust: Regular communication with your audience keeps your cause top of mind and strengthens donor relationships over time.

Why Spring is the Ideal Season for Exterior House Painting

PAINTING & DECORATING

Is your home’s exterior looking a bit tired? Perhaps a fresh coat of paint is in order. While outdoor painting can be undertaken in any season, spring offers numerous advantages that make it the optimal time to refresh your home’s facade.

Favorable Weather Conditions

Weather plays a crucial role in the success and longevity of exterior paint. Extreme conditions, such as heavy rain, hail, or fog, can lead to moisture-related issues like staining or mildew growth. Conversely, excessively hot temperatures can cause paint to dry too quickly, leading to blistering and cracking. Spring, often referred to as the “Goldilocks” season, provides the perfect balance: temperatures are warming but avoid the extremes of summer, creating ideal conditions for proper paint application and curing.

Restored Appearance and Protection

Over time, your home’s exterior endures constant exposure to the elements—storms, strong UV rays, dust, and debris. This can

result in faded, peeling, cracked, or blistered paint. Spring’s mild weather offers the perfect opportunity to address these issues, renewing your home’s appearance and providing a protective barrier against future wear and tear.

Increased Home Value

If you’re considering selling your home, boosting its value is a key priority, especially with rising mortgage rates. An exterior repaint is a cost-effective way to significantly enhance your property’s curb appeal and market value. A freshly painted house makes an excellent first impression on potential buyers, potentially adding tens of thousands of dollars to the sale price.

Streamlined Landscaping and Painting

Spring is a time of vibrant growth for vegetation. Trees, shrubs, and climbing plants produce new shoots, and gardeners begin planting flower beds. By painting your house early in the spring, before extensive planting or pruning, you can protect your landscaping from being damaged by ladders and foot traffic, ensuring a smoother painting process.

Enjoy a Stress-Free Summer

Completing your exterior painting project in the spring means it’s done before the peak summer months. Imagine relaxing on your deck or hosting backyard gatherings without the disruption of a painting crew. Knocking out this task in spring frees up your summer for enjoyment and leisure.

Tips for a Successful Spring Paint Job

• Choose a Calm Day: Avoid windy conditions, as wind can cause paint to dry too quickly and stir up dust that can embed in the wet paint. A light breeze is ideal. Always check the weather forecast for rain, especially if painting in the morning.

• Proper Surface Preparation: Before applying paint, thoroughly prepare the surface. This includes scraping away loose or peeling paint, gently sanding uneven areas, and applying a suitable primer.

• Invest in Quality Paint: Select long-lasting paint brands that offer durability for 10 to 15 years, saving you time and money in the long run.

• Apply Multiple Coats: For optimal protection and a flawless finish, apply at least two coats of paint.

Painting your home’s exterior is a significant undertaking, but the benefits—a refreshed look, enhanced protection, and increased home value—are well worth the effort, ensuring your home remains a source of pride for years to come.

Lose weight with intermittent fasting and feel great

NATUROPATHY

Intermittent fasting is where you use fasting for part of the day, rather than a longer term fast. It’s actually something we do each day, we finish eating at the end of the day and then we don’t eat again until breakfast (when we ‘break’ the ‘fast’). With the exception of small babies who need to eat around the clock, your body stores energy to keep you going through the night without any food.

Digestion time

It takes 5 hours to digest a meal, sometimes longer if it was a large meal, so what we generally do is space our meals that far apart to ensure we have a regular supply of energy throughout the day. Then overnight, your body use stores from the liver which last around 10-15 hours. Once the liver stores have been used, your body can fuel on the stored fat as an energy source.

Fasting vs low calorie

One important thing to note here is that fasting is not the same as eating less. To your body, a small meal indicates food shortages, and it holds onto fat for fuel, and slows down metabolism. This usually means you will feel tired, and possibly cold, as your body works hard to conserve energy. Fasting is about eating as much food as your body needs but over a smaller period of time.

How to begin

One of the easiest ways to start with fasting is if you wake up in the morning and you’re not hungry, wait until you do feel hungry, then eat. Eat good healthy food for your first meal as well as for the rest of the day. After dinner, don’t have any snacks, but if you feel like you want something in your mouth, go for a herbal tea or soda water.

There are a lot of recommendations that people skip dinner rather than breakfast, which I agree with, if you normally eat dinner alone. Cortisol levels, along with other hormones that can aid with metabolism, are higher in the morning. However, there are so many health benefits to eating with others and spending time with people over a meal so if dinner is the time that you spend with others, then this is your most important meal. Every traditional culture in the world sees the importance of a shared meal, make sure this is valued even when fasting.

Eating window

It can be really helpful to establish what’s known as an eating window. This is the period of the day when you are not fasting, for example: 10 hours/day or 8 hours/day, with a set start and finish time. You may like to start eating at 9am and finish by 7pm, or start at 11am and finish by 7pm. Find a rhythm that works for your

body and your lifestyle, then stick to that. You don’t even have to fast every day, even a few days a week means that you’re allowing your body to use your fats stores as a fuel source.

If you do go for a longer time in the day without eating, be sure to drink plenty of water and add some salt (Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt) this will help to keep you hydrated. The body needs some salt in order to absorb the water.

Understanding metabolism

If you understand how your body metabolises food you will probably know that refined carbs give you a quick energy supply, whilst whole carbohydrates are metabolised a little slower. Did you know that fats offer an even slower, longer supply of energy? If your body is used to fuelling on refined carbs most of the time, then switching to fuelling on stored body fats as a fuel source can be really difficult. But there’s something you can do to make this so much easier.

So, in order to prepare for fasting, your diet needs to include healthy fats: nuts and seeds, unprocessed meats, dairy, coconut oil, and olive oil. This way your body will be used to a slow steady energy supply and will find the switch to fuelling on body fat much easier.

If you have a disease that affects your metabolism, or are on medications that are required to be taken with food, be sure to check with a healthcare professional before beginning fasting. But this has to be the easiest (and cheapest) way to lose weight.

New food and agribusiness network to grow global opportunities

The City of Greater Geelong and Geelong Manufacturing Council (GMC) have announced a new Food and Agribusiness Network to help local industries to develop markets and capitalise on export opportunities across the globe.

This partnership cements our continued support for our region’s economic growth and export capabilities by increasing connectivity between local businesses and encouraging knowledge sharing across operations, product innovation, supply chains and business growth.

The City and GMC announced the network at a recent joint Exports Forum for food, beverage and agribusiness processors and manufacturers across our region.

The Exports Forum brought together businesses to share knowledge and explore supply chain development and export opportunities. Attendees learnt negotiation strategies, freight and logistics insights and how to manage foreign exchange risks.

New policy and guidelines set to encourage more outdoor dining spots

New alfresco dining guidelines and policy will provide clearer direction for cafe, restaurant and bar owners across Greater Geelong.

The Outdoor Dining Policy and Guidelines replace the previous guidelines and guide traders on suitable locations and alfresco furniture such as planters, tables and barriers.

The updated guidelines focus on establishing a consistent and efficient approach to the application process, permit types, positioning, safety measures, design elements, operations and maintenance.

Examples of requirements include:

• Outdoor dining infrastructure, such as tables and chairs, must be easily removable to allow for emergency services or utility access when required.

• Umbrellas must withstand winds up to 120 km/h and have a minimum clearance of 2.4 m from the footpath.

• Businesses are responsible for maintaining a clean and tidy outdoor dining space, including the removal of litter, bird droppings, tree debris and spills.

• Tables and chairs must be durable, weather-resistant and designed for outdoor use.

The updated guidelines have been informed by extensive public engagement in 2022 and this year, workshops and surveys with traders, emergency services and community members, and an accessibility review last year.

The Summer in the Laneways - Little Malop Street Outdoor Dining Trial, which allowed hospitality businesses to temporarily expand outdoor dining in this pedestrian priority street, provided important learnings that have also been incorporated in the guidelines. The trial tested dining configurations, aimed to increase foot traffic and evaluated pedestrian-priority concepts.

Find out more about the new guidelines or apply for a permit online.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

The new guidelines support small businesses to create thriving alfresco dining areas that attract locals and visitors alike.

Our new Outdoor Dining Policy and Guidelines pave the way for vibrant, accessible and safe environments that respect local character, enhance shared spaces and balance the needs of businesses, pedestrians and community.

They draw on best practice from other councils and cities, while ensuring the approach is local and tailored to our specific needs in the Geelong region.

Councillor Eddy Kontelj

We thank community members for sharing their opinions during consultation.

We’ve heard that traders, customers and pedestrians strongly support having more outdoor dining, simpler processes, more greenery and flexible, accessible design.

The City has made sure the Outdoor Dining Policy and Guidelines reflect local needs and aspirations, and we look forward to seeing more of these areas popping up.

It is particularly pleasing that the new policy and guidelines support the popular concept of ‘Dining to the Wall’ – referred to in the guidelines as ‘Trading Zone in front of business.’

This is an initiative that many traders and small business operators request of us post-COVID.

This will make for a very vibrant outdoor dining experience.

Community members aged 16-25 who are interested in making a difference are encouraged to apply for the 2026 Victorian Youth Parliament program.

The City and the Geelong Y (YMCA) are looking for six local young people to be part of our Greater Geelong team, with applications now open.

The annual program, which will reach its 40th anniversary next year, champions the voices of young people.

Participants will learn about the Victorian legislative system over five months and develop advocacy and community leadership skills.

The team will draft, debate and vote on their own proposed legislation (bill) on an issue that they are passionate about during a three-day session at the Victorian Parliament in July 2026.

Over the past 39 years, Youth Parliament has influenced more than 60 pieces of Victorian legislation, including laws on banning single use plastics and most recently the introduction of free public transport for under 18s.

The 2025 team developed a bill titled “Increased Swim Safety,” which is particularly relevant to beachside towns in the Geelong region.

The proposed legislation aims to reduce preventable drownings in the community, with a focus on eliminating hazards in the water that have the potential to become incidents for young people.

In July, this year’s Geelong Youth Parliament team debated the bill and it was passed.

The successful bill has been formally presented to Minister for Youth Natalie Suleyman who will distribute it to relevant state Members of Parliament for consideration.

“Council is excited to enable more young people to be heard on issues that matter to them.

Participants will build public speaking, critical thinking, communication, leadership and teamwork skills, which will serve them well throughout their studies and careers.

Young people will be provided with regular mentoring and support from a member of the City’s Youth Development Unit and The Y throughout this intensive program.

If you’re interested in learning about and influencing political processes, developing new skills, having a positive impact and meeting new people, Youth Parliament could be for you!”

“Attending Youth Parliament has been a truly life changing experience.

I met wonderful people, had the ability to advocate for change, speak within Parliament, witness how legislation is made and hone my public speaking skills and parliamentary understanding.

It is the best program I have ever participated in and I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in politics.”

Council will not pursue permit controls to protect trees on private residential land through a local law or planning overlay.

Instead, it has supported the refresh of its Urban Forestry Strategy, including community education initiatives and resources that promote the value, benefits and importance of trees on private and public land.

The decision follows an investigation and review of potential regulatory and non-regulatory options to safeguard trees on residential land, such as requiring a permit to remove trees identified for protection or tree maintenance grants for residents.

Public engagement earlier this year saw 1,610 page visits, 324 survey participants and six submissions, reflecting diverse opinions around prioritising environmental and community benefits, individual property rights, implementation issues and what makes a tree significant.

A majority of respondents (67.3 per cent) supported tree protection controls on private land, however this figure was expected given environmental and community groups were key stakeholders.

New housing development was seen as a major threat to canopy, while there was strong support for education, programs and resources to build support and knowledge around the significance of trees.

Council resolved not to introduce additional or duplicate controls to those being introduced by the Victorian Government.

The government’s Plan for Victoria was released after commencement of the City’s engagement, and contains an action to increase tree canopy cover to 30 per cent in urban areas.

Tree controls were introduced into the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme on 15 September in line with the Plan for Victoria, requiring a permit to remove a canopy tree over five metres and increased canopy cover.

Council reaches decision on protection of trees on private land

“Thanks to the community members for sharing their ideas and thoughts on options to protect trees on private land.

We had a massive response from residents who took the time to consider regulatory and non-regulatory options.

Rather than double up and pursue costly controls, we will support the community’s aspirations and the Victorian Government’s changes through education and resources.”

“The City of Greater Geelong recognises the significant value and importance that trees have in our region, having been designated a Tree City of the World for a third consecutive year.

Trees enhance the beauty of our region, improve the community’s physical and mental health, and reduce urban heat and climate change impacts.

They also serve as a location marker in Greater Geelong, with the You Yangs known for its eucalyptus and acacia species and the Moonah woodlands on the Bellarine.”

Share your thoughts on planned switch to digital parking in central Geelong

We’re calling on shoppers, workers, traders and other community members who park in central Geelong to give feedback on our plan to make parking meters completely digital in November.

We’re moving to a more sustainable and efficient system that accepts digital payments only and no longer produces paper receipts.

We’ve seen a significant decline in coin payments over the past seven years, with 85 per cent of drivers now paying for their parking by debit card, credit card or via the EasyPark app.

Despite this decrease in coin payments, the cost to collect the money from meters has increased to more than $250,000 per year. In addition, repairing printer and mechanical faults contributes significantly to operating costs in both parts and labour.

The planned change to digital payments will enable better use of ratepayer money.

Payment options will include credit/debit cards at parking meters and online payments through the EasyPark app, which gives drivers more control over their stay and ensures they don’t pay for unused time. Digital payment receipts will be available.

Drivers will also have the option of free two-hour parking sessions in all 2P on-street spaces.

Complete the online survey

“Council is keen to hear from the community about going completely digital in central Geelong.

The City reviewed our current parking system and identified clever and creative ways to improve machine reliability for drivers, reduce costs, and optimise productivity.

We’ve seen a steady decline in coin payments at the meter with customers preferring to pay via credit/debit card or EasyPark app.

Have a think about digital-only payments at parking meters and what the positives or challenges for drivers might be.”

“Other Victorian councils have made the switch to digital parking as it is more manageable and efficient.

Our data shows that a small proportion of drivers use coins, mostly for shorter parking stays, in central Geelong.

With this in mind, there is no need to use coins when accessing free two-hour parking sessions in all 2P on-street spaces.

Please share your thoughts on this plan and how it will impact you, particularly if you’re part of the 15 per cent who use coins.”

Greater Geelong leads Australia’s largest council-led smart street lighting rollout

The City of Greater Geelong, in partnership with Powercor, is proud to announce the near-completion of the transformative LED Street Lighting and Smart Control Project, marking a major milestone in the region’s journey toward sustainability, safety, and smart city innovation.

Over 4.5 years, more than 22,000 outdated and inefficient street lights have been replaced with energyefficient LED fittings, equipped with smart control technology, making it the largest council-led smart lighting rollout in Australia. This upgrade includes:

• 14,500 residential lights (Category P)

• 5,100 main road lights (Category V)

• 2,500 decorative lights

The new lighting system has delivered annual operational savings of approximately $2.2 million, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 3,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) per year. Additionally, lighting compliance and safety have been significantly improved in high-risk areas.

The new LEDs are up to 82 per cent more energy efficient than the previously used mercury vapour street lights and are already in use across several other municipalities in Victoria.

A key feature of the project is the integration of smart controllers and the development of a Central Management System (CMS), enabling remote monitoring and adaptive lighting control. This system, being developed in collaboration with Powercor, is scheduled for commissioning by late 2025.

Powercor, who own and maintain the majority of the region’s street lights, have played a pivotal role throughout the project. Their continued partnership ensures the long-term success and maintenance of the smart lighting infrastructure.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“This smart LED technology not only improves public safety and lighting quality, but also dramatically reduces our energy use and carbon footprint.

The partnership with Powercor has been instrumental in delivering this transformation, and the smart control system opens the door to future Smart City innovations.

Chair of the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio Councillor Elise Wilkinson

“The scale of this project sets a benchmark for other councils across the country and highlights the City’s commitment to innovation and environmental leadership.”

Powercor’s public lighting asset manager Noel Twyman

“We now have more than 80 per cent of our public lighting network transitioned to LED, which delivers more efficient lighting and reduced maintenance costs for our customers.

The smart technology in these lights will enable real-time management of our public light network, not just for the City of Greater Geelong but ultimately all councils across our network.

Congratulations to the City of Greater Geelong for embarking on this incredible project for their communities”

Powercor public lighting asset manager Noel Twyman controls the smart LED street light remotely, with City project manager Josh Salter, Cr Elise Wilkinson and Powercor project manager Barry Thebes.

Behind the scenes in Animal Management

We’re shining a light on the important work of our Animal Management team, who help to keep community members safe and provide education about responsible pet ownership.

Adrian Clarkson became an Animal Management officer after the global pandemic cut short a stint working overseas as a chef, a trade he’d dedicated 16 years to.

“I ended up doing some study online while at home in lockdown and I applied for roles in community safety.”

Having worked at the City for just over a year, Adrian says every day is different when dealing with requests from the community, and there’s never a dull moment.

“We attend to dogs at large and livestock on roads, we audit domestic animal businesses, gather evidence for barking dog complaints, and we investigate dog attacks and menacing rushes.

We’re outside on the road most of the time, out at beaches and in parklands, not stuck in an office somewhere or in a kitchen, as I’ve previously done.”

In the last financial year, Animal Management responded to 251 dog attacks and 503 menacing rushes and investigated 1,908 barking dog complaints.

“At the end of the day, community safety and wellbeing are our main priority.

We are there to not only enforce but also educate about responsible pet ownership – to contain animals, walk dogs on leads and keep them out of prohibited spaces, to ensure the safety of people and native animals.

We’re always here to help.”

Registering your pet greatly improves the chances of lost dogs and cats being returned home by one of our Animal Management team members.

Adrian recalls a heartwarming job where he picked up a 14-year-old dog from the vet that was flagged as ‘stolen’ against their microchip and, after some investigation, reunited it with its rightful owner.

“This dog in particular was missing a lot of teeth – that was one of the distinguishing factors that proved that [the man he reached out to] was the owner.

They lived six hours away and the dog had been missing for something like five or six years.

The dog and I were sitting in the park waiting for them to arrive and there were cars driving past, which it took no notice of.”

Adrian says the stolen dog then recognised the owner’s car.

“As soon as that one particular car came around the corner, its ears popped up, tail started wagging and it looked straight in the direction of the car and watched it the whole way around the park until they parked – it was amazing!

To reunite that dog was a real blessing, I think.”

Other instances where he’s seen his work make a real difference for an animal is when he’s worked with the RSPCA to check on the welfare of animals.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR BIKE OR SCOOTER?

Around 6,000 bikes are stolen each year in Victoria, mostly from streets and footpaths, train stations, car parks and front yards.

Recent opportunistic thefts saw two bikes brazenly taken, in broad daylight, from the veranda of a Belmont home; a youth’s bike was stolen from outside a shop while he waited inside and another was taken from a shopping centre entry while the owner did a quick shop.

Protect your bike from theft at home, on the street and wherever your cycling adventures take you. Lock up your bike securely in public places to prevent it from being stolen. Use high-quality U-locks or a U-lock and a strong chain lock to secure the frame and both wheels to a secure, immovable object in a well-lit, high-traffic area At home, take your bike indoors if you can. Whenever possible, keep your bike inside your home or office, in a locked shed or garage, or securely attached to a solid fixture behind locked gates.

Here are our top 10 tips to help make your bike less attractive to potential thieves and reduce the risk of it being stolen. https://nhw.com.au/cars-and-vehicles/protect-your-bike-fromthieves/

One of the most important tips is:

• Make your bike easy to identify and trace - Engrave the letter “V” and your drivers’ licence number (or another unique identifier) on the frame, apply data dots or attach GPS trackers. If your bike is stolen, this can make it easier for police to recover your bike and return it to you.

On researching what makes a good life, Harvard University found that the quality of our relationships matters significantly. The 85-year-old Harvard Study of Adult Development established that human connection is a precursor to a happier, healthier, more meaningful and satisfying life.

It comes as no surprise that connection has been a powerful theme in our impact research with Deakin University. Our first study with Deakin found that children develop a sense of belonging on our Take a Break program, while our second study established that building relationships was key to the long-term impact of Cottage by the Sea. Excitingly, our third research piece with Deakin is exploring the impact of Cottage supporters – I have no doubt that connection will play a vital role in this study too. This week one of our truly wonderful volunteers told me that “Cottage saved my life”.

Positive, healthy, real connection is important to us all at Cottage. A member of our Programs team encouraging a participant helps that young person feel supported. A volunteer in the garden smiling at a visiting teacher cements the sense of belonging we aim for everyone to feel at Cottage. Seeing a child enjoy the same meal for lunch as myself and my colleagues helps unite us all together. A moment in time (arguably more so for children experiencing vulnerabilities) can change a life – it can plant a seed of growth that helps steer a brighter future.

These meaningful connections are made possible with your support. Thank you for helping us give more young people the opportunity to experience belonging, community and hope. As the science confirms, it truly does enhance their lives.

Self-Image

One of my privileges as Chaplain at LPS is to visit classes and conduct a short wellbeing lesson. One of these lessons I addressed Self Image.

For this lesson I bounced off a Dr Seuss story, ‘Gertrude McFuzz’. Gertrude is a bird with a very plain tail. She is jealous of another bird called Lola Lee Lou wh o has a much prettier tail than Gertrude. Gertrude compares herself negatively to Lola Lee Lou, so much so, that she visits a doctor to get a pill that will make her tail grow. The message of the story is that we are ‘fine’, ‘right or ‘enough’ just the way we are.

In the class discussion we highlight the individuality and uniqueness of each person – that there is no one else in the world like them, with their creativity and their specific thoughts. No one is going to be able to achieve the special things that they will be able to achieve in this life.

I explain to the students that one of our biggest dangers is that we are naturally inclined to compare ourselves to others, wishing that we had something of their looks, abilities or attributes. Stopping ourselves from lapsing into these thoughts isn’t easy. Instead, being grateful for what we have and expressing positive selftalk as much as possible, helps create a healthy self-image.

Some suggestions for parents, for fostering a positive self -image in our children:

• –

• Speak positively about children’s looks –

• a child’s sense of

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Age-appropriate track and field events are offered with a focus on personal improvement, building self-confidence, teaching fundamental skills that transfer to other sports and having fun.

Relays are also a popular feature of the summer season and provide a great team and friendship building opportunity competing against other centres.

Athletes under 9 and above may choose to compete in Region and State level events, and have a lot of fun competing as “Team Corio” however many athletes choose to compete only at a local level for fun and self- improvement. Corio encourages and supports all ambitions and all abilities.

At Corio everyone cheers for everyone, and it soon becomes a social highlight of the week for families.

“Little aths” requires adults to participate alongside their athletes, taking turns helping with tasks such as raking sand, retrieving throws equipment, replacing the high jump bar etc.

Athletes love having family out on the field with them, and adults love being up close to the action.

Corio’s enthusiastic team of coaches offer optional free training after school for all athletes.

Sessions focus on skill development, general fitness activities and of course having fun!

Coach Leah enjoys “Giving back to the community and what I get out of it is when they want to tell you what they have achieved with a great big smile on their face.”

Brendan, another coach says “The look I see on a kid’s face when they have just set a new PB or when they can do an event that they were not overly confident doing is a great feeling. Teaching kids to be more confident and resilient is a skill kids will use for life, and if I can assist in that I will.”

Athlete Nathaniel says “I’ve really enjoyed training — learning how to do things properly, trying different techniques, and having fun with friends. The coaches have been amazing. I’ve made big improvements in discus, long jump, running, and high jump. Training has made a huge difference, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

For eligible families, the State Government $200 “Get Active Kids” voucher program opening on October 15 will cover Little Athletics Vic registration $89 (summer & winter), Corio Centre fee $75 and a uniform top $20-25. New athletes can have 2 free weeks trial, and then claim a voucher to register in time for week 3 or vouchers can be claimed by reimbursement for families choosing to register before the voucher program opens.

Go to www.getactive.vic.gov.au for more information. Trial and full registrations can be made here https://lavic.com.au/membership/

John Williamson is bringing his final tour to Geelong in 2025!

What can be said about John Williamson that hasn’t already been said?

2025 will mark his 55th year in the industry. He will also turn eighty. Twenty-five, fifty-five, eighty. From his humble beginnings as the son of a wheat farmer in the small Victorian Mallee town of Quambatook, it’s quite an achievement.

Since that young age of twenty-four, John has traversed this country for fifty-five years performing to hundreds of thousands of Australians. He has written and recorded well over 500 songs and has a swag of awards.

His live concerts take the audience on a journey across this vast land. From ‘Cootamundra Wattle’, ‘Cydi’, ‘Rip Rip Woodchip’, ‘Galleries of Pink Galahs’, ‘Raining on the Rock’, and his calling card, ‘True Blue’.

Williamson’s new single ‘If You Wanna Be An Aussie’ was released Friday 17 January. It is an inclusive and uplifting call to all Australians to treat everyone with respect and dignity which John cites as the true meaning of ‘the Australian way’. John will also mark this milestone year with a new album. His 21st studio album, How Many Songs, will be released on Friday 4th April via Warner Music.

Don’t miss out on seeing True Blue himself at Costa Hall before his ‘Travellin’ Days are Done.

Queen Forever: The Works Tour - 40th Anniversary Concert

Queen Forever presents: The Works Tour - 40th Anniversary Concert

In 2025, Queen Forever are set to embark on their most spectacular tour to date, celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Queen’s iconic The Works Tour across Australia and New Zealand.

This tour marks a monumental occasion in rock history, paying tribute to Queen’s unforgettable 1985 concerts, which were the last times Freddie Mercury graced these shores with his legendary presence. For Queen fans, this was also the final time the band’s full original lineup performed together in Australia and New Zealand, making this anniversary truly one of a kind.

Get ready for an electrifying journey back to Queen’s glorious 1980s heyday as Queen Forever honours the magic of The Works Tour. Prepare to be blown away by faithful renditions of iconic hits like “Radio Ga Ga”, “I Want to Break Free”, “Hammer to Fall”, and of course, “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”. With a fresh and exhilarating set list that dives deep into Queen’s incredible back catalogue, this show promises to take fans on a nostalgic ride that’s bigger and better than ever before.

The band, hailed as the world’s most entertaining Queen tribute show, brings together an incredible lineup of performers who faithfully recreate Queen’s legendary sound and stage presence. Gareth Hill’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury is nothing short of mesmerising, while Scott Bastian as Brian May delivers those legendary guitar solos with precision and flair.

Brad Hodgkinson channels the raw power and rhythmic finesse of Roger Taylor on drums, while Darryn McLaughlin steps into the role of John Deacon, delivering those unmistakable bass lines that gave Queen’s music its groove.

Paid for This.

Not to be confused with any of the fakes ones out there. I had to write this bio myself, which really threw my morning plans. I thought coming up with the title was the hard part, but writing a 150 word biography about a comedy show I haven’t performed yet is really hard.

It’s called You Paid for This, and yes, I’m aware you likely haven’t actually paid yet. It’s what we call in the biz “presumptive selling”. A bold, but risky move. The show does what the title suggests, presuming you buy a ticket.

I can’t promise much beyond an hour of jokes, sponsored by you. You haven’t paid yet, but we both know it’s only a matter of time. See you there! Damn it, 143 words.

AFL Match Report | Cats Fall Short at the Final Hurdle

Catch up on all the action from the 2025 Toyota AFL Grand Final

Geelong’s incredible run in the 2025 season has come to a heartbreaking end, with the Cats going down by 47 points to Brisbane in the Toyota AFL Grand Final.

It was a brutal and hard fought match for much of the afternoon, but a quick burst from Brisbane at the end of the third quarter proved to be decisive, the Cats unable to wrestle back the ascendancy as the Lions kicked away.

A telling factor in the contest was Brisbane’s dominance around stoppages, Geelong unable to win the crucial clearances when it mattered most.

Lawson Humphries was among Geelong’s best in a backline under siege for most of the afternoon, collecting 23 disposals, five score involvements and five intercept possessions.

It will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Cats after a terrific season full of growth, but it will also be a valuable learning experience for plenty of young players who got their first taste of an AFL Grand Final.

The start of the game was everything a fan could hope; brutal, contested and uncompromising. It took over 15 minutes for either team to break the deadlock and it was none other than Ollie Dempsey, who found space in the goal square and got on the end of a brilliant chain, kicking the opening goal of the game.

Brisbane answered shortly after, but Oisin Mullin would then set the MCG alight with a dashing goal, taking a bounce and slotting it on the run to give the Cats the lead.

Inaccuracy from the Lions would help Geelong maintain that lead, taking a three point advantage into quarter time.

Max Holmes was everywhere early collecting 11 touches and over 300 metres gained in the first quarter, while Jack Bowes was important with seven disposals (five contested) and a goal assist.

Bowes continued his hot start immediately after the first break, working hard inside 50 and kicking the opening goal just two minutes into the second quarter.

Brisbane then flexed their muscle and wrestled back the ascendancy in a hurry, kicking four of the next five goals to kick away and put the Cats on the back foot.

But as they have done all year, Geelong were able to answer the challenge with Shannon Neale and Brad Close nailing a pair of brilliant set shot finishes, leaving scores level at the end of the first half.

It marked the first time since 1909 that scores have been level at half time of a V/AFL Grand Final, setting the stage for a monumental conclusion to the season.

Lawson Humphries was brilliant in the opening half collecting 12 disposals, three score involvements and three intercept possessions while going at 100% efficiency, along with Bowes (10 disposals, one goal) and Max Holmes (17 disposals, three clearances) who continued to be heavily influential.

The intensity lifted to a new level after half time, Brisbane snatched the lead back before Max Holmes answered with a brilliant finish of his own, launching home a mammoth set shot from outside 50.

But in a decisive five minutes to end the third quarter, the Lions broke the game open with three quick goals to take a game-high 19 point lead into the final break.

Another flurry of goals from Brisbane after three quarter time sealed the deal, Geelong falling by 47 points in front of 100,022 spectators at the MCG.

Marcus Herbert

A stellar season from Marcus Herbert has seen him claim Geelong’s 2025VFL best and fairest award

Marcus Herbert has claimed Geelong’s 2025VFL best and fairest award, taking out the top prize at the CatsVFL presentation day on Friday.

As consistent as they come and brilliant with ball in hand, Herbert pieced together a terrific campaign across half back to win the award, ahead of George Stevens in second place and Patrick Kelly in third.

Herbert played 16 games across the season and averaged 24.6 disposals, 4.3 marks and 4.3 tackles, with the Cats often trying to get the ball into his hands as the main distributor off half back, and finished the count with 114 votes.

It continues a brilliant run of form over the past few years, with Herbert becoming a staple in the Cats’ line-up since making his VFL debut in 2021, also selected as the vice-captain this year.

AFL-listed midfielder Stevens finished runner-up with 105 votes as he continued to grow his game in a year that saw him make his AFL debut.

In his second year at Geelong, Stevens made his presence felt in the VFL, averaging 27.4 disposals (14.5 contested possessions), 8.1 clearances, 5.9 tackles and 4.1 score involvements per game.

It was a standout season that saw him make the initial Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year squad.

Versatile 21-year-old Kelly finished third with 102 votes, following a season where he played through a variety of roles to finish with an average of 14.9 disposals, 3.6 intercept possessions, 5.6 tackles, 2.4 marks and 1.8 clearances a game.

Kelly also claimed the Little Vic Award, which recognises the Cats’ VFL team’s best first-year player, in memory of long-serving Geelong Cats volunteer Vic Fuller.

NEXT GENERATION ACADEMIES

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Next Generation Academies (NGA’s) are a joint initiative between the AFL and AFL Clubs aimed at the attraction, retention and development of all talented players (both male and female), whilst growing participation in the underrepresented segments of our community. A key objective of the NGA’s is to increase the talent pool of Indigenous and Multicultural players. These groups are significantly underrepresented in the AFL comparative to the population, and therefore AFL Clubs are incentivised through draft concessions for their role in growing this talent pool. However, the primary function of the NGA’s is to provide a Club based talent program to all kids, using the AFL Clubs’ profile and expertise to raise awareness and interest in the programs.

ELIGIBILITY

To qualify for the Geelong Cats NGA the player:

1. Resides in the Geelong Cats zone in Victoria or the Northern Territory

2. Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

3. Was born in an African, Asian or non-English speaking country

4. Has at least one parent born in an African or Asian country; or

5. Has both parents born in a non-English speaking country other than Africa or Asia

GEELONG CATS NGA

DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY

The Development Academy introduces high-performance training for Indigenous and Multicultural players, including FatherSon and Father-Daughter prospects. The NGA Games serve as the entry point, where two training squads (boys & girls) are selected for the NGA carnival in the April school holidays. Training includes a mix of skill sessions, fitness testing and tactical education, with support from Geelong Cats coaching and recruitment staff. Postcarnival, players are offered to participate in monthly sessions both in person and online, aimed at individual development areas such as nutrition and recovery techniques. The program builds strong fundamentals and prepares players for potential selection in the U15 Geelong Falcons V/Line Cup squads at the end of their U15 year.

Development Programs will run throughout the year and will be advertised via the club’s social media channels and in partnership with AFL Barwon.

Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG

OCTOBER

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visit. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.

Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.

The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.

The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.

When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.

BUCKET LISTS: WHY PLANNING IS IMPORTANT IN RETIREMENT

RETIREMENT

When I meet with a new retiree client for the first time, we go through a Client World Map meeting. The meeting helps me to better understand their financial situation, but it also gives me an opportunity to understand what their future goals and interests are. Retirement is more than an end to working life—it’s the beginning of a new chapter filled with freedom, purpose, and the opportunity to enjoy long-awaited goals. Whether your post-work dreams include extended travel, picking up new hobbies, or simply savouring quiet moments with loved ones, weaving these aspirations into your retirement modelling is crucial for achieving the lifestyle you desire.

The Dreams That Define Us

Retirement is the perfect time to pursue passions put on hold: a grand tour of Europe, finally writing that novel, volunteering abroad, or learning to paint. These aren’t just activities; they’re the experiences that bring meaning and joy. Without incorporating such personal goals into financial planning, retirees risk underfunding their aspirations—or worse, compromising on them entirely.

I personally have several ‘bucket list’ items I wish to achieve in life, and these may happen in retirement. One is to go to the Superbowl, and another is to write children’s books. Also, I want to see if I can get Wallballs off the ground...that was for you Tim (if by chance you ever happen to read this article –sorry people, that was in reference to a long standing in joke between me and a friend of mine).

Using Benchmarks to Guide Your Vision

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) Retirement Standard provides a trusted benchmark of what retirement costs look like in Australia. For a comfortable lifestyle—one that includes private health insurance, a reliable car, dining out, domestic vacations, and even occasional international trips—ASFA estimates annual expenses of around $73,077 for couples and $51,805 for singles. To fund that lifestyle, a retiree would typically need a superannuation balance of about $690,000 for a couple or $595,000 for a single person (ASFA, 2023).

These figures are invaluable—but they reflect a generalized view of comfortable living. True contentment often lies in the bespoke: the trip of a lifetime, pursuing creative fulfilment, or simply more meaningful moments. That’s why your own goals should sit at the heart of retirement modelling.

Bridging Aspirations and Realism

Start by identifying your key goals: travel plans, lifestyle habits, family support, or bucket-list adventures. Estimate the costs, then compare them to the ASFA benchmarks. For instance, adding an annual trip overseas may stretch your budget beyond ASFA’s comfortable baseline—but aligning your super, pension, and savings to account for that ensures you don’t have to compromise experiences for safety.

Moreover, retiree spending tends to decrease over time—but the early years can be the most vibrant, and expensive—as retirees tend to prioritise lifestyle while they’re fitter and more mobile. Factoring in timing can help you balance spending and longevity, so you enjoy life now without risking your financial future.

Tailored Planning for Fulfilment

True retirement planning isn’t one-size-fits-all. It should start with:

• Clarifying personal goals—what matters most to you. We do this in our Client World Map meetings.

• Mapping costs—compare these to ASFA’s modest and comfortable budgets.

• Adjusting strategies—ensure your savings and income sources can fund both essentials and dreams. We provide several retirement modelling scenarios for clients to consider before the leap into retirement. This helps clients have peace of mind that they can afford their goals in retirement and not run out of money.

• Timing considerations—some goals are time-sensitive; others can wait.

Financial advisers often note that many retirees are overly cautious, underspending and leaving unused wealth behind. Your money should serve you—helping you live richly, not just last securely. We believe in leaving the house to the kids but everything else is yours to spend.

Lastly: Live Your Bucket List, Intentionally

Retirement is ultimately about freedom—the freedom to enjoy life and fulfill dreams. By incorporating personal goals into your financial modelling—and comparing them with trusted benchmarks like the ASFA Retirement Standard—you ensure your retirement isn’t merely “comfortable,” but deeply meaningful. Savour the journey, embrace your bucket list, and live the retirement you’ve earned.

If you are not sure whether or not you will be able to afford your goals in retirement, then consider booking an initial FREE retirement meeting with Warren Strybosch, an award winning financial advisor and speaker, who can help you Find Retirement (www.findretirement.com.au) with ease.

Understanding the Basic Daily Care Fee for Australians Entering Aged Care

AGED CARE

In last month’s article we discussed the RAD and DAP. This month we think it is important to discuss the Basic Daily Care Fee. We will explore what the Basic Daily Care Fee covers, how it is calculated, how it is paid, and what Australians need to know when planning for this cost.

Moving into residential aged care is a significant life transition for many older Australians and their families. Alongside the emotional considerations of leaving a long-term home, financial planning becomes a crucial part of the process. One of the most important components of residential aged care costs is the Basic Daily Care Fee. This fee applies to all residents, regardless of their financial position, and is designed to contribute to the everyday living costs within aged care facilities.

What Is the Basic Daily Care Fee?

Everyone pays a Basic Daily Care Fee. This fee helps pay for a resident’s share of day-to-day services such as:

• Meals and nutrition

• Cleaning and laundry services

• Facilities management and utilities (heating, cooling, water, and electricity)

• Basic furnishings and maintenance of communal spaces

Importantly, this fee applies for every day you are a resident, even on days you may be away overnight—for example, if you go on holiday or spend time in hospital.

How Much Is the Fee?

The Basic Daily Care Fee is set at 85% of the single person rate of the basic Age Pension. The federal government updates the fee on 20 March and 20 September each year in line with pension increases, ensuring it rises with the cost of living. Prices are published on the Department of Health, Aged Care and Disability website for transparency.

Based on current rates, the maximum Basic Daily Care Fee is $63.82 per day, or $23,294.30 per year. While this figure changes periodically, it provides a clear indication of the cost families need to plan for when moving into aged care.

How the Fee Is Paid

Residents pay the Basic Daily Care Fee directly to their aged care home, usually on a fortnightly or monthly basis. For many pensioners, the fee is deducted from their Age Pension, making the process straightforward. For others, it may be funded through private income streams such as superannuation pensions, annuities, or investment income.

This regular payment structure ensures aged care facilities receive consistent contributions to help cover the ongoing costs of providing everyday services.

Who Pays the Fee?

Every resident in government-subsidised aged care pays the Basic Daily Care Fee. This applies regardless of whether a person is a full or part pensioner, or whether they are selffunded retirees with significant assets. The universality of the fee reflects its role in ensuring fairness and shared responsibility for basic living costs in residential aged care.

Purpose of the Fee

The Basic Daily Care Fee serves several important purposes:

1. Shared Responsibility: It ensures all residents contribute to their daily living expenses, just as they would if living independently.

2. Government Sustainability: By asking residents to cover basic living costs, government subsidies can be directed toward clinical care and accommodation support.

3. Predictability: Because it is universally applied and updated twice yearly, families can plan ahead with greater financial certainty.

Interaction with Other Aged Care Costs

The Basic Daily Care Fee is only one part of the overall cost structure of residential aged care. Other potential costs include:

• Accommodation Payments: Such as the Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) or Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP).

• Means-Tested Care Fee: An additional charge based on assessed income and assets.

• Additional Services Fees: Optional charges for lifestyle or premium services beyond the standard package.

Together, these components form the complete financial picture of aged care, with the Basic Daily Care Fee acting as the essential foundation.

Financial Planning Considerations

Given that the Basic Daily Care Fee is ongoing, unavoidable, and payable every day of residency, it is vital to factor it into longterm financial planning. Key considerations include:

1. Cash Flow Management: Ensuring regular income sources can cover the $63.82 daily fee without exhausting savings too quickly.

2. Pension Interaction: For Age Pension recipients, the link between the fee and the pension ensures affordability and indexing over time.

3. Budgeting for Increases: Families should expect adjustments twice yearly in line with pension changes.

4. Asset consideration and Protection: If and when to sell the home and what to do with the proceeds to ensure the Power of Attorney and other family members interests are protected.

Professional financial advice can help structure income streams and asset management to comfortably meet this regular obligation.

Common Misconceptions

Many families misunderstand the Basic Daily Care Fee, especially when comparing facilities. Common misconceptions include:

• “The fee covers everything.” In fact, it only covers daily living expenses, not nursing or clinical care.

• “Wealthy residents don’t pay.” Every resident pays the fee, regardless of financial position.

• “It can be waived.” The fee is set nationally and cannot be negotiated by individual facilities.

The Basic Daily Care Fee is a cornerstone of Australia’s aged care funding model. At $63.82 per day, or just over $23,000 annually, it represents a resident’s contribution toward meals, cleaning, laundry, utilities, and other daily living services. Paid directly to aged care homes on a regular basis, and applying every single day of residency, the fee ensures fairness, sustainability, and predictability across the aged care sector.

By understanding how the fee is calculated, when it applies, and how it interacts with other aged care costs, Australians and their families can plan more effectively for the financial realities of residential aged care. Careful planning not only helps to meet the cost with confidence but also allows families to focus on what truly matters—the quality of care and support their loved one receives in this important stage of life.
