International Day of Charity 2025: Celebrating Compassion in Action
Every year on September 5, people across the globe pause to reflect on the power of giving. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 2012, the International Day of Charity has become a worldwide celebration of generosity, volunteerism, and community spirit. It also honors Mother Teresa, who passed away on this date in 1997—a lasting reminder of how compassion can change lives.
The 2025 theme, “To call the world to act with compassion and solidarity,” reminds us that real change begins with empathy and action. In today’s connected world, charity isn’t just about giving money— it’s also about listening, supporting, and creating hope where it’s needed most.
Charities in Geelong Making a Difference
In Geelong, Victoria, many organisations are turning compassion into action every day:
Lifeline Geelong & South West Victoria
Provides mental health and domestic violence awareness training, giving communities the tools to talk about difficult issues and support one another.
Barwon Health Foundation

Geelong Mummas is an online mothering community based in Geelong, Australia, founded in 2012 by Rachel Wilson, to provide a welcoming, non-judgmental
space where over 15,000 local mothers and mothers-to-be can connect, share advice, and offer each other support.
Geelong Food Relief Centre
It is a not-for-profit charity that aims to deliver nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing hardship. They work with agencies to provide food aid services to those who are disadvantaged in a dignified and compassionate manner.
How We Can Support Geelong’s Charities
There are many ways to help local charities thrive:
• Volunteer flexibly: Assist with driving, logistics, food pantries, and fundraising.
• Fund infrastructure: Help charities purchase equipment and strengthen training or storage facilities.
• Raise awareness: Share their stories within the community and beyond.
• Partner with businesses: Encourage corporate volunteering, workplace fundraising, and in-kind donations.
• Advocate for policies: Support initiatives like volunteer-friendly parking, local grants, and recognition of charities’ social role.
• Think long-term: Consider bequests or regular giving to ensure ongoing impact.
Both local and federal governments, along with the Geelong Community Foundation, provide significant support to charitable organizations in Geelong. The Geelong government offers grants of up to $10,000 to local charities and not-for-profits through Benefit Geelong. Federally, over $390,000 has been allocated to Geelongbased groups to assist those in need, as reported by a local news source.
This International Day of Charity, let’s celebrate how every act of generosity— small or grand—lights up lives. In Geelong and everywhere else, charities give us ways to live hope, not just talk about it. Your time, your attention, your voice, your giving—all of it matters.
“ Run4Geelong is an event that embodies our city’s energy and giving spirit. ”
Which is why I was pleased earlier this year to announce that the City of Greater Geelong would be the new naming rights partner for Run4Geelong until 2027.
Over the years this family-friendly event has united our community in a race for better health, and we’re proud to partner with Barwon Health Foundation to champion this cause.
Participants can choose where their registration fee goes, whether its Andrew Love Cancer Centre, Mental Health, Women’s & Children’s Health or one of the many other vital services Barwon Health provides.
They’ll be raising money for a cause close to their heart while enjoying the physical benefits of running, jogging or a stroll with family and friends – it’s a win-win for everyone.
This year’s Run4Geelong includes 10km, 5km and 3km events, and the beloved 1km kids course.
It doesn’t matter how fit you are – whether you’re a competitive runner, a casual walker or anything inbetween, there’s an event for every age and ability.
The course starts and finishes on our waterfront, winding through some of our city’s most picturesque locations.
I’ve always said Geelong’s waterfront is the best in Australia, and I’m thrilled to see so many events like Run4Geelong, Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and the Festival of Sails making such great use of this fabulous asset.
We’re committed to making Run4Geelong one of our region’s signature major events over the next three years and seeing it become even bigger, bolder and better.
As a lifelong running enthusiast myself, I’m keen to join thousands hitting the streets on 9 November for the City of Greater Geelong 5km event.
If you’ve registered, I hope to see you there! If not, and you’re keen to get involved, please visit run4geelong.com.au and join us for this fantastic event.

Father’s Day
This coming Sunday, September 7th, we celebrate not only our dads but also the uncles, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who guide us, cheer us on, and love us unconditionally. It’s a day to say “thank you” to the men who play a special role in shaping our lives.
Father’s Day has a uniquely Australian twist. While much of the world celebrates in June, Australians mark the occasion on the first Sunday in September. The tradition began in the 1930s, inspired by the growing popularity of Mother’s Day, and quickly found its place in the national calendar as a time to recognise the special role of fathers in our communities.
Celebrations vary from household to household, but one tradition remains constant: family. Many mornings begin with the classic breakfast in bed— bacon, eggs, toast, and a strong cup of coffee. With spring in the air, outdoor activities are a favourite. Backyard barbecues, fishing trips, a friendly game of cricket, or an afternoon at the footy all capture the spirit of the day. Children often add their own personal touch with handmade cards, drawings, or simple but heartfelt gifts that fathers treasure for years.
Shops and communities also get involved, offering Father’s Day sales, events, and even charity fun runs. But above all, the day is about family, gratitude, and making memories together.
So here’s to all the fathers and father figures—thank you for your love, your laughter, and your endless support.
Australia celebrates you!
Understanding Debits and Credits in Bookkeeping
By Jodie Moore
Bookkeeping is the backbone of any successful business. It provides a clear record of financial activities and ensures that all transactions are accurately tracked and reported. One of the most fundamental concepts in bookkeeping is understanding how debits and credits work. These terms can be confusing for beginners, but with a bit of explanation, their role in maintaining balanced financial records becomes clear.
What Are Debits and Credits?
In accounting, debits (Dr) and credits (Cr) are the two sides of every financial transaction. Rather than referring to increases or decreases in value directly, they represent movements in accounts within the accounting system. Each transaction affects at least two accounts — this is known as double-entry bookkeeping. The key principle is that for every debit, there must be an equal and opposite credit, keeping the books balanced.
The Basic Accounting Equation
To fully understand debits and credits, it’s helpful to start with the basic accounting equation:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
This equation must always remain in balance. Debits and credits help maintain this balance by recording increases and decreases to the various accounts.
We can take this a step further by including income and expenses.
Here’s how debits and credits affect the five major types of accounts:
Common Misunderstandings
This entry maintains the balance because the increase in expenses (debit) is offset by the decrease in cash (credit).
Again, both sides of the transaction are recorded, keeping the books balanced.
One common mistake is assuming that debits always mean money coming in and credits always mean money going out. This isn’t true. The effect of a debit or credit depends entirely on the type of account involved. For example, a debit increases an asset account but decreases a liability or revenue account.
Another confusion arises from personal banking. Have you noticed on your bank account statement that your Balance column shows as a Credit when you have money in the account? But your bank account is an asset, and we’ve just said that Assets are a Debit when they increase. So, what’s going on?
When you put money into the bank, the bank is now holding that money for you and it is effectively a liability to them but an asset to us (opposite transaction in a double-entry system). With this in mind, now look at your bank statement but from the point of view of the bank. The liability, the money they now owe us, is increasing so it is a Credit. The bank statement, although it is for your bank account, is actually a bank record, showing your account from their perspective, not yours. When you then say you are in credit, it means you have money in your bank account, and the bank owes you that money.
The Role of a Trial Balance
To ensure accuracy, businesses regularly prepare a trial balance, which lists all ledger accounts and their balances. The total of debits should equal the total of credits. If they don’t, it signals an error in the bookkeeping, such as a transaction being recorded only once or with the wrong amount.
Why It Matters
Understanding debits and credits is crucial for accurate financial reporting. Mistakes can lead to incorrect financial statements, which can affect business decisions, tax reporting, and investor trust. Even if software handles most of the work today, a solid grasp of these concepts allows business owners and finance professionals to detect errors and make informed financial decisions.
Final Thoughts
While debits and credits may seem daunting at first, they are simply tools to ensure that every financial transaction is recorded correctly.By understanding how they function within different account types, anyone can gain greater confidence in bookkeeping and financial management. Mastering this foundational concept paves the way for deeper financial literacy and better business decisions.
Financial Planning Basics
FINANCIAL
PLANNER
By Warren Strybosch
Financial planning involves working with a professional to navigate through the complexities of investment, taxation and changing rules and regulations. By working together, you can navigate a pathway to reach your specific goals, preferences and aspirations.
Financial planning can help you through all stages of your life. The financial planning process involves the following six steps:
To gain the most value out of the financial planning process, there are three fundamental issues that are important for you to consider and understand. These key components are discussed below.
Goal Setting
The starting point for any plan is to set your personal goals. Financial goals are likely to be different for each person and need to reflect your specific preferences, aspirations, and needs. Your goals may vary from short-term goals (less than one year), like buying a car, paying off your debt, or going on a holiday, medium-term goals (1-3 years), such as saving for your children’s education, or long-term goals (5 years or more), like saving for a comfortable retirement and leaving behind a legacy.
Your goals will be more real and achievable if you can apply the following attributes:
• Specific: Make them specific to you and your family.
• Measurable: Ensure there is a measurement in place to determine whether the goals have been met.
• Achievable: The goals need to be achievable, so while you may set a stretched target that requires you to be diligent, don’t set the target too high.
• Realistic: Your goals can be an aspiration, but must still be grounded.
• Time-targeted: You need to set time targets to achieve your goals.
Once you have determined where you are heading, you can work with your financial planner to develop the pathway to achieving your goals.
Budgeting
To put you on the path to building your wealth, you need to start saving money. This may mean working out how to find more money. The best way to do this is to set yourself a budget.
Setting a budget is important for everyone, no matter your age or how much money you have. It is especially important for people who are struggling to meet their goals or who keep building up debt.
A budget is not just about cutting expenses. It is about finding a good balance between your income and your expenses and deciding what is important to you so that you have money left over to save. A budget is not a fixed, forever plan. You can continue to make adjustments over time until you reach a comfortable outcome and have a good strategy in place that will meet your goals.
There are two sides to a budget:
• Your income – includes income from all sources such as salary, interest, rental income and dividends, but only include your regular income and make sure you use aftertax income or allow for tax payable in your expenses.
• Your expenses – include mortgage repayments, bills and general living expenses.
Tip
Go through the following documents to check you have captured all of your income and expenses:
• Bank account statements
• Credit card statements
• Pay slips (for both income and deductions)
• Cheque book details
• Expense receipts
• Bills and insurance certificates
You could also consider keeping a diary to record all your expenses – and don’t forget all the little ones as this is where you can often make some significant savings.
Setting a budget is a simple step but sticking to the budget can be harder.
Below are ten tips for setting a good budget:
1. Make it realistic or you will never stick to it
2. Budget an amount for fun, leisure and personal expenses so you can avoid impulse buying
3. Save your pay rises, bonuses, special payments or tax refund
4. Look for small savings – for example, take your lunch to work, or use internet banking to reduce bank fees.
5. Pay by cash or EFTPOS to avoid credit card fees (and also avoid accumulating debt)
6. Reduce fees and charges – combine bank accounts to reduce fees
7. Put your change into a savings jar at the end of every day
8. Shop around and compare prices on insurance policies. Look for companies that offer discounts for multiple policies
9. Use lay-by options instead of debt and credit cards
10. Update your budget each year
Understanding Debt
When used properly, debt can be an effective tool that may help you to achieve your financial goals. Debt can be used to purchase a range of items before you have saved the full purchase price.
It is important to understand the difference between ‘good’ debt and ‘bad’ debt. Debt can help you buy the family home, purchase a car or consumer goods and also enable you to purchase investment assets such as shares, managed funds or a rental property.
Where debt is used to acquire investments such as shares or property, this is known as gearing. This is often referred to as ‘good’ debt because it gives you the potential to claim a tax deduction for borrowing expenses and assets that will hopefully appreciate in value over time.
Borrowing to invest (gearing) simply allows you to use a combination of your own money and borrowed funds to accelerate wealth over the long term. However, it is a higher risk strategy that magnifies both the gains and losses from your portfolio. The higher the proportion of borrowed funds compared to your equity, the greater the associated risks. Options to gear into investments include margin lending, home equity loans or geared managed funds that borrow internally.
‘Bad’ debt is non-deductible debt, like borrowings for consumer goods such as cars and holidays. Even though a loan for the family home is non-deductible, it should not necessarily be viewed as ‘bad’ debt because the value of the home can grow over time. But looking at strategies to pay off this debt as quickly as possible will increase your wealth.
In any case, paying off non-deductible debt before deductible debt will usually be the most appropriate course of action for many people.
The cost of borrowing can be high, so you need to be disciplined and consider strategies to reduce the total interest cost, reduce the term of the loan and improve your cash flows.
Some of these strategies may include:
• Making loan repayments more often
• Making additional payments
• Repaying non-deductible debt first
• Combining loans into one account with a lower interest rate

The Toughest Person You’ll Ever Lead is Yourself And Why Getting That Right Changes Everything
LEADERSHIP
& CULTURE SPECIALIST
By Sally Higoe
This month, I’ve been running workshops across Victoria, diving into what makes leadership truly work - not just when things are smooth, but in those messy, pressure-filled moments that really test you. And here’s the big realisation that hit home for so many leaders who joined me: the toughest person you’ll ever lead isn’t your team. It’s yourself.
We often think leadership is about motivating others, keeping people accountable, or managing personalities. And yes, that’s part of it.
But if you can’t lead yourself first - under pressure, in the heat of the moment - everything else falls apart.
The way you show up becomes the blueprint your team follows. If you’re calm, clear, and steady when things get tricky, your team will draw confidence from that. But if you’re scattered, reactive, or constantly firefighting, they’ll mirror that too. It’s confronting, but it’s also empowering, because it means the biggest lever for change starts with you.
In my recent workshops, we explored something I call the Switch Point.
...That tiny, split second where you’re about to flip into old habits - snapping, shutting down, or taking over - or instead, pause long enough to choose the leader you actually want to be. That’s the moment that makes or breaks leadership.
Sounds simple, right? But here’s the kicker: very few leaders have ever been taught how to do this.
Under pressure, most of us run on autopilot. Your chest tightens, your brain races, you just want to react. And that’s when mistakes creep in. Rushed decisions, tense conversations, missed opportunities, even burnout. Not just for you, but for your team too.
One of the tools we worked with in the workshop was the 4 Energy Zones. It’s a quick way to notice where you’re at before things spiral:
• Green (Reset Zone): Calm, clear, present. This is your best leadership state.
• Red (React Zone): Triggered, tense, running hot.
• Blue (Rescue Zone): Over-helping and carrying too much while quietly burning out.
• Black (Resign Zone): Flat, checked out, just going through the motions.
Now, no one’s living in green all day, every day. That’s not real life. The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is awareness... catching when you’re sliding into red, blue, or black, and having a way to reset before it costs you or your team.
And that’s where the real value is. Awareness is step one, but awareness without action won’t change a thing. That’s why we built what I call a Leadership Reset Blueprint in the workshop. It’s personal. It’s practical. And it gives you something to grab onto in real time.
It’s as simple as five steps:
1. Recognise the real cost of staying stuck in your default behaviour.
2. Spot your early warning signs before you spiral.
3. Choose a circuit breaker - a phrase or action that snaps you back.
4. Engage your anchor - something physical or mental that grounds you fast.
5. Practise it when things are calm so it’s ready when you need it most.
The leaders who walked out of the room didn’t just leave with notes, they left with a reset tool that they could put to use that afternoon.
And that’s what I love most about this work - because when you lead yourself better, the ripple effect on your team is huge. More trust. More clarity. Less firefighting, more momentum.
And here’s the thing for you: if you want to start leading yourself better, you don’t have to wait until you’re in the middle of a high-pressure situation. You can start now.
I’ve created a simplified Flip the Switch worksheet – designed to be used in real-time – so pop it up in the office, for you and your team.
If you’d like me to forward you a downloadable link, just email me sally@sallyh.au & I’ll send it through.
It’s simple, but it works ... because when you can lead yourself well, you can lead anyone
And if this speaks to you, I’ve got good news.
I’m running an online version of this workshop on Wednesday 3rd September. It’s a chance to experience this process live, learn the tools in real-time, and actually practise them with me guiding you through.

Tax changes in 2024-25 that may apply to your small business
ACCOUNTANT
By Anjana Jogi
The new financial year has begun, which means it is now time to wrap up the 202425 financial year, here is a list of changes and rates that you will need to be aware of for your business in preparation for the 2024-25 tax return.
Small business instant asset write-off
Small business with aggregated annual turnover of less than $10 million will be able to continue to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets that cost $20,000 or less. Eligible assets must be first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025, and the write-off applies on a per asset basis.
The Labour Government has announced that it will extend the $20,000 instant asset-write off threshold for small business to the 2025-26 income year, however this has not been legislated
Division 7A rate
The Division 7A ATO benchmark interest rate for 2024–25 is 8.77%.
The Division 7A ATO benchmark interest rate for 2025–26 will be 8.37%.
Car depreciation cost limit
The car depreciation limit for 2024-25 is $69,674.
This amount will remain unchanged for the 2025-26 income year.
Amendment period extended for business
tax return
From the 2024-25 income year onwards, businesses turning over less than $50 million now have a longer window of up to four years from the date of assessment to make tax return amendments.
Previously the amendment period for small businesses was two years from the date of the tax assessment.
GST reporting enforcement
The ATO has announced that from 1 April 2025, it will begin transitioning small business with a history of noncompliance, from quarterly to monthly GST reporting.
If a business has a history of non payment, late or non lodgment or incorrect GST reporting, the ATO may require it to report monthly instead. The move is designed to improve compliance with GST obligations and build good business habits.
ATO interest charges no longer deductible from 1 July 2025
Amended legislation under ss 25-5 and 26-5 of ITAA 1997 will deny deductions for ATO interest charges, specifically the general interest charge (GIC) and shortfall interest charge (SIC), incurred on or after 1 July 2025.
Any GIC or SIC incurred prior to 1 July 2025 is not impacted by the changes to the law and will continue to be deductible for your 2024–25 and earlier tax returns.
Superannuation guarantee rate change
From 1 July 2025, the superannuation guarantee obligation for employers will rise from 11.5% to 12% for contributions made for employees.

The Power of Pricing: How Higher Pricing Can Boost Your Business
DIGITAL MEDIA
By Ethan Strybosch
Determining the appropriate price for your goods or services is an essential choice that can greatly influence your business’s success and growth. Although some might think that lower prices draw in more customers, the reality is that accurately pricing your services, even at a premium, can provide many benefits that lead to increased profitability and success. In this article, we will discuss the advantages of setting the right price for your service and why opting for higher pricing can be a more effective strategy for your business.
1. Perceived Value:
One significant benefit of elevated pricing is that it suggests a level of superior quality and worth. Consumers frequently link higher costs to enhanced products or services, which can foster a perception of exclusivity and appeal. When your products or services are priced at a premium, prospective customers are more inclined to see your business as a source of high-quality solutions, thereby boosting the chances of transforming them into dedicated, long-term clients.
2. Improve Profit Margins:
Increased pricing naturally results in enhanced profit margins, enabling your business to sustain solid financials and fund its expansion. With improved margins, you can allocate resources back into marketing, research and development, as well as enhancements in customer service, which ultimately boosts your competitive edge and overall business performance.
3. Better Customer Relationships:
Many people assume otherwise, but customers frequently choose to pay extra for outstanding service and an improved experience. By setting higher prices, you can invest additional resources in bolstering customer support and offering individualized care, which fosters better connections with your customers. These happy clients are more inclined to become advocates for your brand, sharing positive feedback and attracting more business to you.
4. Targeting the Right Audience:
Pricing your service correctly allows you to target the right audience effectively. A higher price point can attract clients who value quality over affordability, and who are willing to pay for the unique benefits your service provides. This targeted approach not only simplifies your marketing efforts but also helps build a loyal customer base that aligns with your business’s values and offerings.
5. Distancing from Competitors:
Setting a higher price strategically can differentiate your business from others, creating an impression of exclusivity in the marketplace. Competing on lower prices often leads to price wars and discounting, which can harm profitability and weaken the perceived worth of services. By opting for a higher pricing model, you showcase your belief in the value you provide and motivate customers to select you for your quality rather than solely for cost.
Why Spring is the Ideal Season for Exterior House Painting
PAINTING & DECORATING
By Steve Dahllof
Is your home’s exterior looking a bit tired? Perhaps a fresh coat of paint is in order. While outdoor painting can be undertaken in any season, spring offers numerous advantages that make it the optimal time to refresh your home’s facade.
Favorable Weather Conditions
Weather plays a crucial role in the success and longevity of exterior paint. Extreme conditions, such as heavy rain, hail, or fog, can lead to moisture-related issues like staining or mildew growth. Conversely, excessively hot temperatures can cause paint to dry too quickly, leading to blistering and cracking. Spring, often referred to as the “Goldilocks” season, provides the perfect balance: temperatures are warming but avoid the extremes of summer, creating ideal conditions for proper paint application and curing.
Restored Appearance and Protection
Over time, your home’s exterior endures constant exposure to the elements—storms, strong UV rays, dust, and debris. This can
result in faded, peeling, cracked, or blistered paint. Spring’s mild weather offers the perfect opportunity to address these issues, renewing your home’s appearance and providing a protective barrier against future wear and tear.
Increased Home Value
If you’re considering selling your home, boosting its value is a key priority, especially with rising mortgage rates. An exterior repaint is a cost-effective way to significantly enhance your property’s curb appeal and market value. A freshly painted house makes an excellent first impression on potential buyers, potentially adding tens of thousands of dollars to the sale price.
Streamlined Landscaping and Painting
Spring is a time of vibrant growth for vegetation. Trees, shrubs, and climbing plants produce new shoots, and gardeners begin planting flower beds. By painting your house early in the spring, before extensive planting or pruning, you can protect your landscaping from being damaged by ladders and foot traffic, ensuring a smoother painting process.
Enjoy a Stress-Free Summer
Completing your exterior painting project in the spring means it’s done before the peak summer months. Imagine relaxing on your deck or hosting backyard gatherings without the disruption of a painting crew. Knocking out this task in spring frees up your summer for enjoyment and leisure.
Tips for a Successful Spring Paint Job
• Choose a Calm Day: Avoid windy conditions, as wind can cause paint to dry too quickly and stir up dust that can embed in the wet paint. A light breeze is ideal. Always check the weather forecast for rain, especially if painting in the morning.
• Proper Surface Preparation: Before applying paint, thoroughly prepare the surface. This includes scraping away loose or peeling paint, gently sanding uneven areas, and applying a suitable primer.
• Invest in Quality Paint: Select long-lasting paint brands that offer durability for 10 to 15 years, saving you time and money in the long run.
• Apply Multiple Coats: For optimal protection and a flawless finish, apply at least two coats of paint.
Painting your home’s exterior is a significant undertaking, but the benefits—a refreshed look, enhanced protection, and increased home value—are well worth the effort, ensuring your home remains a source of pride for years to come.

IS VITAMIN B6 SAFE?
NATUROPATHY
By Kathryn Messenger
You may have heard of vitamin B6 being in the spotlight lately, as an overdose can cause peripheral neuropathy. The symptoms of this include numbness and pain in the limbs and healing can be slow. An overdose usually occurs when someone is taking multiple supplements, or food products that have added B6.
But the answer is not as simple as limiting B6, let me explain:
There are different forms of B6, just like there are different types of dwellings: caravans, bungalows and houses. Imagine you live in a caravan and a storm causes it to roll down the road and hit a tree, causing the rain water to come pouring through the roof. There, in the middle of the night, in rain and wind, your neighbour offers shelter in their house. It would be crazy to decide as a result of this that all types of dwellings are unsafe.
The main forms of Vitamin B6 are Pyridoxine, Pyridoxamine, and Pyridoxal5-Phosphate (P5P). Pyridoxine has been shown to cause peripheral neuropathy, whilst P5P is actually protective against it.
The problem with the B6 supplementation arises due to very little distinction between these different forms by the governing body in Australia (aka we don’t distinguish between the different types of dwellings, as they have been shown to be unsafe). This is seen in the labelling requirements on a B6 supplement, where B6 must be listed as the equivalent dose of Pyridoxine, even if it doesn’t contain that form of B6.
A recent European study has found that even a low dose of Pyridoxine can cause nervous system issues in some people, however, Pyridoxamine, and P5P have been studied to find that they can heal the nervous system.
So, firstly aim to get your B vitamins from meat (red, white and fish), and if you do
choose to supplement, make sure you check the form of B6, and always choose Pyridoxamine, or P5P. If you would like a safe B vitamin supplement, Whole Naturopathy can help with that, or if you’re suffering peripheral neuropathy as a result of a Pyridoxine overdose, I have successfully treated that, and would be happy to help you heal.
Local innovators complete Clean Economy projects tackling waste, housing and emissions
to identify viable biochar sources for commercial use.
Three Geelong-based businesses are leading the way in clean technology and circular economy innovation, thanks to support from the City of Greater Geelong’s Clean Economy Grants program.
The grants help businesses develop proof-of-concept products and services that reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and deliver environmental benefits to the community.
Rhino Instruments has successfully commercialised a lithium-ion battery management system that repurposes cells from discarded consumer battery packs to power industrial temperature monitors.
Battery waste continues to be a national challenge, due to limited recycling options and fire risks when incorrectly disposed of in general waste. Rhino Instruments’ system offers a safer, more sustainable alternative.
This local innovation demonstrates the potential of circular economy solutions to address the growing challenge of lithium-ion battery waste.
By extending the lifespan of battery cells through creative product design, the system delays the need for recycling.
FormFlow Pty Ltd, a modular housing manufacturer, is tackling housing affordability and sustainability through a market analysis study supported by a Clean Economy Grant.
The study explored circular economy finance models that separate land and home ownership, enabling affordable leasing options using FormFlow’s relocatable homes. These homes can be repurposed, resold or returned at the end of a lease, reducing costs and environmental impact.
The preferred model identified offers up to 40 per cent lower life cycle costs over 50 years and up to 23 per cent lower Global Warming Potential emissions, compared to traditional build-and-sell approaches. These insights will inform future product development to meet national housing and sustainability needs.
Fulton Hogan Industries Pty Ltd used its 2022-23 Clean Economy Grant to investigate the use of biochar in pavement products.
The project delivered valuable data on the strength properties of biocharbased materials and established key stakeholder connections to support future low-carbon and carbon-neutral product development. Work is ongoing
Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:
“These projects show the incredible innovation happening right here in Geelong, with practical solutions to national and global challenges like battery waste, housing affordability and low-carbon construction.
It’s fantastic to see local businesses leading the way in clean technology, creating new opportunities and jobs for our community right here in the region.”
Councillor Elise Wilkinson, Chair of the Environment and Circular Economy portfolio
“We’re proud to support these local innovators who are turning smart ideas into real-world solutions.
These projects demonstrate how clean technology and circular economy thinking can deliver better outcomes for our environment, economy and community. They also strengthen Geelong’s reputation as a City of Design.”
Will you be the next innovator or business to develop a Clean Economy solution? Applications are now open for the 202526 Clean Economy Grant round, closing 5.00pm on 8 September 2025. Grants of up to $25,000 are available.

They’re also actively involved in training and development, invited to Council events, and participate in mentoring sessions with councillors.
The successful candidates will elect the Junior Mayor and Junior Deputy Mayor to represent the group.
Nominations are open until Friday 3 October.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“I invite young people to consider nominating themselves.
Our Youth Council program empowers young people, helps to build their skillset and confidence, and enables Council and the community to hear directly from our younger residents.
We want to hear about the issues important to them, the challenges they’re facing and what needs to improve in the region for people growing up here.
We need a diverse Youth Council that’s representative of the Greater Geelong community, so we encourage everyone to consider nominating, regardless of previous leadership experience.
This is a chance to make a real difference in 2026.”
Junior Mayor Ayush Singh
“The Youth Council program is an incredible opportunity for young people to develop their skills while also giving back to their community.
I highly encourage young people to nominate themselves for this exciting and rewarding experience, where you’ll build confidence, make new friends, and be part of something that makes a difference.”

The City and AIBC are confident that this collaboration will pave the way for sustainable growth, innovation, and prosperity.
AIBC National Chair Deepak-Raj Gupta OAM:
Have your say on the future of Pakington Street
The City of Greater Geelong has put Amendment C433, which proposes planning scheme changes to guide the future of Pakington Street and Gordon Avenue, out for public exhibition.
The amendment covers three precincts, Pakington North, Pakington Heritage Core, and Gordon Avenue, and proposes to implement two Urban Design Frameworks (UDFs) which were adopted by Council in May last year. Adoption of the Pakington North UDF followed a deliberative community engagement process in early 2024.
The UDFs will create vibrant, connected, and sustainable neighbourhoods through a vision that balances growth, heritage protection, and the need for improved public spaces with more housing choice, commercial opportunities, and better walking and cycling links close to central Geelong.
The Pakington Heritage Core precinct will be protected and enhanced through modest growth, while Pakington North will feature mid-rise, mixed-use development with shops, services and community spaces at ground level and housing above. Gordon Avenue will transition from larger format commercial uses and low-scale housing to mid-rise, mixed-use buildings, with new housing, offices, and services.
Key changes include land rezoning to a mix of Residential Growth Zone, Mixed Use Zone, and Commercial 1 Zone, rezoning Council-owned land at Autumn Street to Public Park and Recreation Zone for a future park, and applying design and development overlays to guide building height, setbacks, landscaping, and street character.
As part of the public exhibition process, submissions on Amendment C433ggee are open until Monday 1 September 2025, and documents can be viewed online or in person at Wurriki Nyal or Geelong West Library.
Council will then meet to consider the submissions received. Any submissions that cannot be resolved are likely to be considered at a Planning Panel Hearing appointed by the Minister for Planning where submitters will be invited to speak to their submission before a decision is made on the amendment at a future Council meeting. If Council ultimately decides to adopt the amendment, the amendment would be sent back to the Minister for final approval.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:
“There are three distinct precincts: the Pakington Street heritage core, as well as frameworks for future new development and enhancement to Pakington North and Gordon Avenue, both which permit more housing.
The amendment and all the supporting documentation can be viewed on our website, allowing the community to see exactly what has been proposed so they can make informed submissions.”
Councillor Andrew Katos, chair of the City Planning portfolio:
“This is an important moment in the history of Pako, and it will shape the precincts for future generations.
All submissions will be carefully considered, so ensure your submission is in before 1 September so that your views can be recorded and considered in the final outcome.”

A renewed vision for Geelong’s vibrant waterfront is now open for public comment.
The Draft Geelong Waterfront Master Plan – which features 32 proposed projects ranging from small scale upgrades to major precinct redevelopments – was endorsed for community engagement at the August council meeting.
Building on the 2011 plan, it responds to changing community needs and growing visitor numbers, and identifies fresh opportunities for culture, business, and recreation.
The draft draws on feedback from more than 600 survey responses, listening posts, and government, education, business, tourism, and community stakeholders gathered in late 2023 and early 2024.
Five distinct precincts feature multiple proposed projects guided by the design principles of connectivity, environment, culture, and activation. They are:
• Western Beach Restoration (Rippleside Park to Western Beach Boat Club) – honouring Wadawurrung heritage and environmental values with a cultural walk, stronger pedestrian and cycling links, and ecological restoration.
• Convention and Creativity (Western Beach Boat Club to east of Cunningham Pier) – building on the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre as a catalyst for transformation, with a welcoming plaza for dining and retail, and upgrades to the youth precinct and western boat marine complex.
Exciting improvements on the way for Aldershot Reserve
• Heritage Leisure (Eastern Beach to Eastern Beach Reserve) – making family-friendly improvements for increased accessibility and comfort, with more shade and seating, and expanded recreational facilities.
• Limeburners Nature (Limeburners Point) – establishing clear links to Eastern Park, the Bellarine Rail Trail and shared path network, and reimagining the mineral springs.
The master plan sets a long-term vision for the Geelong Waterfront, with staged delivery subject to funding and partnerships with government and the private sector.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“The Geelong Waterfront is truly world-class and we are so fortunate to have it in the heart of our city. It’s up to us to ensure this exceptional public space continues to thrive for decades to come by preserving culture and heritage, restoring the natural environment, and setting new benchmarks in design, sustainability, and placemaking. The 2011 plan gave us the Wangim Walk and laid the foundations for new investment, but it’s time for a refresh and a rethink. This new plan shows what’s possible.”
Cr Trent Sullivan, chair of the Economic Development portfolio
“We want to understand the priorities of the people who use the waterfront most. There is enormous potential for sustainable development, better connection and improved amenity, as laid out in the plan. Community feedback will help us decide where to start.”

Junior Mayor reflects on Youth Council’s role in driving youth-led change
Junior Mayor Ayush Singh has highlighted the many events, opportunities and meetings that the 2025 Youth Council has taken part in over the last four months.
The Youth Council is made up of 11 young people, aged 12 to 17 at the time of nomination, who were elected to the City’s Youth Council Advisory Committee as the region’s official ‘youth voice’.
The Junior Mayor presented the Youth Council’s second report to Council at this week’s meeting, detailing the committee’s progress and achievements since their last report, including:
• Active involvement in shaping and promoting the 2025 Geelong Youth Survey, which received a massive 3,772 contributions and the biggest response from young people for a City-led engagement.
• Contributed feedback on a range of City strategies and projects including the Council Plan, Integrated Transport Plan, the Promoting CHANGE (Community Health and Nutrition Engagement) project, the Geelong Nature Festival, and Open Space, Public Realm, Public Art, and Community Health and Wellbeing strategies.
• Meaningful conversations with councillors through the Councillor Connect Mentoring Program, discussing fees and charges in the Draft 2025-26 Budget, housing, transport, vaping, and public safety.
• Shadowed councillors at a Community Conversations event held at The Nest Youth Hub, offering real-world insight into their roles and responsibilities.
• Learned about democratic processes in Victoria at a presentation from the Victorian Electoral Commission, with a highlight being an interactive activity that demonstrated how preferential voting works.
In previous years, the Youth Council gave advice and recommendations to Council in its mid-year reports. This year, the advice will be incorporated into the final report to give members more time to develop a deeper understanding of the issues they are advising on. This time will ensure their advice fully reflects the perspectives of local young people.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“Our Youth Council members are really capable and represent the diverse perspectives of their peers across the region.
Councillors enjoy sharing our learnings with them but also hearing from the horse’s mouth what is affecting young people in the Geelong region.”
Junior Mayor Singh
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Youth Council so far.
I have the opportunity to speak with my fellow Youth Council members about issues prevalent in our community and influence real change to better improve the lives of youth in Greater Geelong.
This has been an incredible chance for me to share what I feel affects people the most and to provide my own perspective on the decisions being made.
These experiences have not only built my skills but also given me valuable experience that I will carry with me throughout my life.
For the rest of the year, I’m excited to explore new opportunities I can be part of, and to watch the Youth Council grow together.
I can’t wait to see the change we create and to inspire more young people to get involved.”
Geelong leads the way in innovation, industry and investment
We’re continuing to back industry and innovation in Greater Geelong by welcoming clever ideas and billiondollar investment in our region.
The City’s Civic Precinct Wurriki Nyal hosted two marquee events recently, bringing together key industry leaders from manufacturing, construction, infrastructure, energy and advanced technology.
The events connected local businesses with major project opportunities, and highlighted Geelong’s growing capability and competitiveness to provide supply chain solutions that meet national and global needs.
More than 100 businesses gathered for the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Geelong Showcase in central Geelong this morning, where leaders behind some of Victoria’s most significant upcoming projects shared insights and updates. Attendees heard firsthand how to best position themselves for procurement opportunities, while also networking with new contacts and exploring potential collaborations.
Meanwhile,at the Advanced Fibre Cluster Geelong (AFCG) workshop on 25 June, experts from local public and private sectors explored how cutting-edge Geelong-made products could play a role in solving national challenges. The
Championing our readiness and growth underpins many objectives of our new Council Plan 2025-29, including core and critical infrastructure and economic development. It also drives our vision to be a leader as a clever and creative cityregion by 2049.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“Geelong has a proud manufacturing identity, it’s part of our story. Importantly, we continue to evolve as a City with diverse businesses. It’s about adapting to new industries, embracing innovation, and creating new jobs for the future. This is vital in supporting the needs of our rapidly growing population.”
Economic Development portfolio chair Cr Trent Sullivan
“This is what smart economic development looks like. We have bold ambitions for our city, captured in our new Council Plan 2025-29 and Geelong on the Rise: A Clever & Creative International City 202434 economic development plan. Providing a platform for these events is just one way to drive us closer to our goals. It’s exciting to know the connections made at our very own Civic Precinct could lead to something much bigger.”
Our Data Exchange dashboard shows 178 major projects valued at over $10 million are currently in the pipeline. That’s a total projected $16.2 billion investment in our economy, which means more local jobs and spending in our community. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT
Friend in Me
The Geelong Steam Preservation Society is a not-for -profit organization, incorporated in 1970. It built and operated a museum railway on the Belmont Common in Geelong between 1968 and 1978.
When the railway between South Geelong and Queenscliff was closed in November 1976, the Society negotiated to relocate its collection to Queenscliff. It first ran trains there in May 1979. The line through to Drysdale (16km) was re-opened in 1980 and now operates as the Bellarine Railway.
The Swan Bay Express operates year-round on most Sundays, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school holidays. Steam trains depart Queenscliff, taking passengers on a 45-minute return journey, around the picturesque shores of Swan Bay to Lakers Siding.
The Bellarine Railway is home to the Blues Train and Q Train and offers special events, including Day Out With Thomas and THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Rideenhancing the rail experiences offered to locals and visitors in the region.
Visit: www.bellarinerailway.com.au
Workshops Open Days
The workshop at Queenscliff will be open to the public on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November 2025. Visitors may inspect restoration of historic railway items; a steam locomotive, timber bodied railway carriage, steam crane and small Fordson tractor powered locomotive.
For further information email: info@bellarinerailway.com.au
Carriage 19
Car 19 was one of 21 carriages built for the South Australian Railways narrow gauge system at the Adelaide Loco Works between 1879 and 1881. The bodies were timber framed and clad with iron panels. The interior was polished timber with longitudinal seating down each side.
Restoration of Car 19 commenced in mid-2019 with the assistance of a $9,000 grant from the Geelong Community Foundation to purchase materials. Work is now well advanced. It is one of the oldest surviving railway carriages in Australia.
Steam Locomotive G 33
G 33 is the only survivor of 57 steam locomotives designed and constructed in Australia during WW2 to assist in moving the huge volumes of wartime freight. As the war ended, one of the locomotives was purchased for operation at the Fyansford cement works. It was replaced by a diesel-electric locomotive in 1957, officially retired in 1966 and donated to the railway museum at Newport in 1968.
In March 2013, arrangements were made for the locomotive to be moved to Queenscliff and restored to operation. The locomotive had been in good condition when retired. Restoration mainly involves making good the deterioration that had occurred during 45 years of display in the open air.
The engine units have been overhauled and the boiler section is well advanced. The public will have a rare opportunity to see close up the components that make up a steam locomotive.
Weekly Working Bees
Work is carried out every Tuesday from 10 am until 3 pm and similar hours on Saturdays. Some tasks require skilled work, but many simply require a useful pair of hands. A variety of age groups are involved, both male and female. New volunteers are always welcome and donations to purchase materials are also required. Turn up at 26 Bridge Street, Queenscliff.
Progress with the ASG locomotive may be viewed on the Facebook page G33 Fundraising and Progress. Car 19’s Facebook page is Car19 restoration. The Steam Crane restoration may be followed on Facebook at Steam Crane 30
TRADIES - PROTECT YOUR TOOLS
TIME FOR ACTION - MARK AND IDENTIFY YOUR TOOLS
Don’t leave tools unattended or in an unlocked vehicle. Criminals are opportunistic. If they see little risk and high value, your tools are gone. During 2019 there were 20,000 reports of stolen tradies tools. Many of these were from vehicles.
Keep your vehicle locked, your tools out of sight, and both in a lock up garage.
Mark your tools and keep a record
Clearly mark your tools with a unique identifier, such as your driver’s licence number with a “V” before it. Use an engraver or a UV pen. These are available from Neighbourhood Watch.
While marking your tools might not prevent them from theft, it can make them less attractive to steal as it can lower their value and make it harder for thieves to resell them. It’s also easier for police to identify your tools and return them to you when stolen and recovered.
Put a sign or sticker on your ute or toolbox saying all equipment and tools are marked. These are available from Neighbourhood Watch Greater Geelong. Email us at nhwgreatergeelong@ gmail.com
You can also look at using data dots – unique identification numbers encoded on polyester substrate to form microdots that act much like DNA.
Property Vault – www.propertyvault.com.au offers an online “vault’ in which to record your tools, etc. Take a look.
Consider adding an air tag to tradies trailers and tool boxes.
Taking photos of your tools and identifiable features can also help police track them down in the event they have been stolen.
Community Safety Perception 2025
A Municipal review of Perceptions of Safety and Protective Habits in residential areas.
How safe do Victorians feel in their own homes, and how do their everyday behaviours reflect those feelings?
The Community Safety Index 2025: Municipal Review of Perception and Protective Habits in Residential Areas explores this question by combining community perceptions with local crime data and security behaviours.
Developed from over 8021 responses to the How Safe Is My House quiz (which you can access here - https://howsafeismyplace. com.au/ ), this report offers a detailed municipal breakdown of how residents across Victoria experience, interpret, and respond to safety in their neighbourhoods.
This research goes beyond traditional crime statistics. It highlights the difference between objective safety (e.g. crime rates) and perceived safety, shaped by personal habits, socioeconomic background, and local context. By analysing both active security measures (such as CCTV and alarms) and passive behaviours (like locking doors and windows even when at home), the report provides a more complete picture of how people protect their homes, even in areas with low crime prevalence.
Key features of the report include:
• Safety perception ratings across six Victorian regions from 2020–2024
• Comparative trends in the use of home security systems and habits
• Regional insights into passive vs active protective behaviours
• Considerations for how population density and access impact safety practices
• Plans for increasing participation and improving inclusivity in community safety data
Whether you’re a policymaker, researcher, local council, or community member, this report offers valuable insights into what safety feels like on the ground and what can be done to support safer, more resilient neighbourhoods across Victoria.

Self-Image
One of my privileges as Chaplain at LPS is to visit classes and conduct a short wellbeing lesson. One of these lessons I addressed Self Image.
For this lesson I bounced off a Dr Seuss story, ‘Gertrude McFuzz’. Gertrude is a bird with a very plain tail. She is jealous of another bird called Lola Lee Lou wh o has a much prettier tail than Gertrude. Gertrude compares herself negatively to Lola Lee Lou, so much so, that she visits a doctor to get a pill that will make her tail grow. The message of the story is that we are ‘fine’, ‘right or ‘enough’ just the way we are.
In the class discussion we highlight the individuality and uniqueness of each person – that there is no one else in the world like them, with their creativity and their specific thoughts. No one is going to be able to achieve the special things that they will be able to achieve in this life.
I explain to the students that one of our biggest dangers is that we are naturally inclined to compare ourselves to others, wishing that we had something of their looks, abilities or attributes. Stopping ourselves from lapsing into these thoughts isn’t easy. Instead, being grateful for what we have and expressing positive selftalk as much as possible, helps create a healthy self-image.
Some suggestions for parents, for fostering a positive self -image in our children:
• –
• Speak positively about children’s looks –
• a child’s sense of

Standing Together Against Human Trafficking in Nepal
In the quiet valleys of Nepal, a silent crisis unfolds. Each year, around 35,000 children and women are ensnared by human trafficking, torn from their families and plunged into exploitation—whether for organ harvesting, forced labour, or sex trafficking. The heartbreak is compounded by a grim reality: less than 1% of these victims are ever rescued. This is a tragedy our community cannot ignore.
Youth Dimension, a dedicated not-forprofit, and our partner New Light Nepal are fighting back. Working on the ground, we’re empowering communities through education to break the cycle of modernday slavery. Our programs have already trained thousands of vulnerable Nepali mothers and daughters to recognise and resist traffickers’ deceptive tactics. However, the scale of this crisis demands more awareness, resources, and people willing to stand against this injustice.
Here in our community, we have the power to make a difference. Your support can fund a life-saving anti-trafficking initiative, creating a ripple effect of compassion and hope. No matter the size, every contribution brings us closer to a future where Nepal’s most vulnerable are protected and empowered.
Join us in this fight. Your generosity could be the difference between despair and deliverance for a needy child or mother. Together, we can shine a light on a brighter future for Nepal.
Donating to our fundraising account guarantees that 100% of your gift will go directly to New Light Nepal. No portion will be used for administration or any other costs. Please consider donating; even a small amount goes a long way to stop trafficking in Nepal. Account details are below.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB
In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.
You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.
There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.
Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. In our first season we had over 100 registered players and expect those numbers to grow in 2018 and continue to grow into the future as the club continues to develop.
The club aims to provide a positive family friendly enviroment for our members to develop their skills off the field and to also become great people off the field. The club is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking to get members involved in helping the club grow and develop.
We are aiming to become a huge part of the Leopold community and look forward to growing the sport of football (soccer) in our beautiful town.
Little Aths is loads of fun!
Athletes at the Corio Little Athletics Centre are getting excited with their summer track and field season not far away.
Saturday September 20 10.00am-12.00pm is their Come & Try day at Viva Energy Athletics Arena, Goldsworthy Reserve.
Potential athletes can try some events, and families can meet coaches and other centre representatives. The day includes a free BBQ and is lots of fun.
Little Athletics also offers 2 free trial weeks once the season starts on October 4. Athletes must be aged 5-16yo on December 31 and complete a trial registration for insurance purposes.
A variety of age-appropriate events are offered with the focus on improving each athlete’s personal best (PB). All-Abilities athletes are welcomed and supported. This may require reasonable adjustments to events or equipment to allow them to safely and confidently compete, and families are encouraged to suggest ways to assist their athletes.
Under 6 athletes begin running distances of 50m-300m, mini hurdles, long jump, shot put and discus. Other events are added age appropriately; hurdles, race walks, triple jump, high jump, javelin. Athletes are encouraged to try all events, but if there is something they do not like, they do not have to.
Free optional training sessions are offered to all athletes after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and athletes can attend regularly or casually. Sessions rotate through different event skills, as well as general fitness activities with a focus on having fun. Corio has an enthusiastic team of coaches, who have great rapport with their athletes and the number of personal bests and other achievements last summer was amazing.
“Little aths”, as it is known, is a fun social sport all the family can participate in together. Unlike many other sports where parents cheer from the sidelines or record the scores, “little aths” provides many more opportunities to be involved “hands on”. Adults are asked to take turns helping with tasks such as raking sand, picking up throws equipment, replacing the high jump bar, etc, for their own athletes’ events. Athletes love having their family members out there with them, and adults enjoy being close to the action.
The Little Athletics Vic registration of $89 includes both summer and the winter cross country season, the Centre fee of $75 has a scale of discounts for families with multiple athletes, and a uniform top costs $20-$25 depending on the style chosen.
Athletes under 9 and above may choose to compete in Region level events, and the Corio Centre has a lot of fun competing as “Team Corio” however many athletes choose to compete only at a local level for fun and self improvement.
Corio encourages and supports all athletes to compete within their own comfort level.
Through the support of the Corio Centre’s sponsors, entry fees to several Region level events are subsidised to encourage participation.

Jeremy CAMERON
WINS THE 2025 COLEMAN MEDAL
With the 2025 home and away season reaching its conclusion on Wednesday night, Jeremy Cameron has officially claimed the Coleman Medal It was the inevitable that has now become official; Jeremy Cameron has won the 2025 Coleman Medal.
With the final game in the 2025 AFL home and away season complete, Cameron sits alone on top of the competition’s goal-kicking leaderboard after a phenomenal campaign.
The Cats superstar finished on 83 goals in the regular season, 14 goals clear of Gold Coast’s Ben King in second place and 21 goals ahead of Hawthorn’s Jack Gunston in third.
It is a second career Coleman Medal for Cameron, his first coming in 2019 during his stint with the GWS Giants.
Jeremy Cameron Wins Coleman Medal | All 83 Goals
Take a look back at all 83 goals Jeremy Cameron kicked in season 2025 to win the Coleman Medal
The brilliant season kicked off in relatively mundane fashion by Cameron’s lofty standards, kicking seven goals across his first four games and sitting on 20 goals at the end of Round 9, an average of 2.2 goals per game.
But a switch was flicked and things changed in a hurry during the Cats Round 10 clash with Port Adelaide, Cameron finished with a seven-goal haul, five of which came in the final quarter and that kickstarted a sensational run.
Cameron would go on to kick 59 goals across his next 12 games at an average of 4.9 goals per game, including an 11-goal bag against North Melbourne in Round 20. becoming the first Geelong player since Gary Ablett Senior to hit double digits in a game.
Throughout the course of the season, the spearhead kicked four goals or more in 13 different games while only being held goalless on two occasions.
A four-goal haul in the final round of the home and away season took Cameron’s season tally to 83, eclipsing his previous career-high of 76 goals and finishing well clear in the race for the Coleman Medal.

You dream of it as a kid and to get the opportunity at the MCG, to be able to play against a club that we have had some big games against recently, it is a massive prospect.
I am super pumped.
O’Sullivan on the difference 12 months can make
I was pretty lucky last year that I got to play with Tom Hawkins in the VFL Finals, so you get a little bit of a taste of greatness there.
But for me this year, the step up to now be able to play in AFL Final. I got to watch from the sidelines as the AFL program went through that last year, so now to hopefully get the opportunity to replicate that is super exciting.
It is an amazing time to be at the footy club.
O’Sullivan on the challenge against Brisbane
Probably less so for me, but a few other boys probably have a bit of a sour taste in their mouth. Obviously we played them twice this year and they have done us both times.
They are a really quality opposition, hopefully it will be a really cracking game.
I think we have had some great games against them, this year they have come out on top both times but especially in the first game, we really took it up to them.
Hopefully it will be an amazing contest.
O’Sullivan on whether he will review Round 15
To say that you wouldn’t reflect on the games that you have played against them would be silly.
Like I said we have played against them twice now, so I think I have had a really good opportunity to figure out what the matchups will be like, and how they like to play.
That is a bit of an advantage, probably to both teams having to play against each other.
For me it will be reflecting on what my strengths are, just reiterating my routine and that sort of stuff away from the game to make sure I am ready to roll.
O’Sullivan on dealing with an extended break
I would like to think that I am a pretty relaxed person in terms of my mental preparation.
For us it is about treating this week and next week as if it was any other week. We have byes throughout the year and games where we have extended breaks, so it is a good chance throughout the year and something that the coaches reiterated to us, is that it could happen in Finals.
We have to find a routine that works for us and things we can do to get away from the game, but also to make sure that we sharpen the sword so we are ready to go.
For me this week is about finding a bit of a balance between resetting, trying not to think about footy too much and then when we get into next week, being ready to go.
Geelong’s list is in strong shape as they prepare for another Finals campaign

VJBL Competition Restructure for 2025/2026 Season
The Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) has confirmed a restructure to its competition framework for the 2025/2026 season.
The Key Change: Introduction of the Regional League (RL)
The new Regional League (RL) is now officially part of the VJBL competition structure and sits as the third tier of competition, beneath Victorian Championship (VC) and Victorian Junior League (VJL).
Competition Structure by Age Group:
Under 12 (U12): Teams will grade into VC, VJL1–5, or Regional League
Under 14 (U14): Teams will grade into VC, VJL1–8, or Regional League
Under 16 & Under 18 (U16 & U18): Teams will grade into VC, VJL1+
The Regional League will be organised into geographical pools, helping reduce travel compared to higher divisions.
This restructure aims to provide more appropriate competition levels across Victoria while supporting families with more manageable travel commitments.
What This Means for Geelong United:
This restructure allows Geelong United teams to continue competing in the VJBL while reducing overall travel and ensuring teams are grouped into geographic pools if they grade into RL.
This means our players can enjoy strong competition without the burden of excessive travel, making participation more accessible for families across our region.
Our VJBL Tryouts are fast approaching!

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG
WATERFRONT
The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.
This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:
Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.
There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.
A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.
POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND
Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.
The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.
The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.
A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.
This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.
SKATE PARK
Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.
We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

CUNNINGHAM PIER
The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.
The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.
Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.
A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.
ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT
The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.
The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.
The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.
Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
OLD PAPER MILL
Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.
The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.
Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.
Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.
WESTERN BEACH
In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.
Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.
Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.
Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s
RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND
Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.
Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.
The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.
The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!
Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.
Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.
Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.
A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.
STEAMPACKET GARDENS
A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.
On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.
There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.
The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.
Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.
THE CAROUSEL
One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.
Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.
A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.
Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.
The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.
Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.
The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.
OLD GAOL
The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.
Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.
Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.
It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.
The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.
BUCKET LISTS: WHY PLANNING IS IMPORTANT IN RETIREMENT
RETIREMENT
By Warren Strybosch
When I meet with a new retiree client for the first time, we go through a Client World Map meeting. The meeting helps me to better understand their financial situation, but it also gives me an opportunity to understand what their future goals and interests are. Retirement is more than an end to working life—it’s the beginning of a new chapter filled with freedom, purpose, and the opportunity to enjoy long-awaited goals. Whether your post-work dreams include extended travel, picking up new hobbies, or simply savouring quiet moments with loved ones, weaving these aspirations into your retirement modelling is crucial for achieving the lifestyle you desire.
The Dreams That Define Us
Retirement is the perfect time to pursue passions put on hold: a grand tour of Europe, finally writing that novel, volunteering abroad, or learning to paint. These aren’t just activities; they’re the experiences that bring meaning and joy. Without incorporating such personal goals into financial planning, retirees risk underfunding their aspirations—or worse, compromising on them entirely.
I personally have several ‘bucket list’ items I wish to achieve in life, and these may happen in retirement. One is to go to the Superbowl, and another is to write children’s books. Also, I want to see if I can get Wallballs off the ground...that was for you Tim (if by chance you ever happen to read this article –sorry people, that was in reference to a long standing in joke between me and a friend of mine).
Using Benchmarks to Guide Your Vision
The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) Retirement Standard provides a trusted benchmark of what retirement costs look like in Australia. For a comfortable lifestyle—one that includes private health insurance, a reliable car, dining out, domestic vacations, and even occasional international trips—ASFA estimates annual expenses of around $73,077 for couples and $51,805 for singles. To fund that lifestyle, a retiree would typically need a superannuation balance of about $690,000 for a couple or $595,000 for a single person (ASFA, 2023).
These figures are invaluable—but they reflect a generalized view of comfortable living. True contentment often lies in the bespoke: the trip of a lifetime, pursuing creative fulfilment, or simply more meaningful moments. That’s why your own goals should sit at the heart of retirement modelling.
Bridging Aspirations and Realism
Start by identifying your key goals: travel plans, lifestyle habits, family support, or bucket-list adventures. Estimate the costs, then compare them to the ASFA benchmarks. For instance, adding an annual trip overseas may stretch your budget beyond ASFA’s comfortable baseline—but aligning your super, pension, and savings to account for that ensures you don’t have to compromise experiences for safety.
Moreover, retiree spending tends to decrease over time—but the early years can be the most vibrant, and expensive—as retirees tend to prioritise lifestyle while they’re fitter and more mobile. Factoring in timing can help you balance spending and longevity, so you enjoy life now without risking your financial future.
Tailored Planning for Fulfilment
True retirement planning isn’t one-size-fits-all. It should start with:
• Clarifying personal goals—what matters most to you. We do this in our Client World Map meetings.
• Mapping costs—compare these to ASFA’s modest and comfortable budgets.
• Adjusting strategies—ensure your savings and income sources can fund both essentials and dreams. We provide several retirement modelling scenarios for clients to consider before the leap into retirement. This helps clients have peace of mind that they can afford their goals in retirement and not run out of money.
• Timing considerations—some goals are time-sensitive; others can wait.
Financial advisers often note that many retirees are overly cautious, underspending and leaving unused wealth behind. Your money should serve you—helping you live richly, not just last securely. We believe in leaving the house to the kids but everything else is yours to spend.
Lastly: Live Your Bucket List, Intentionally
Retirement is ultimately about freedom—the freedom to enjoy life and fulfill dreams. By incorporating personal goals into your financial modelling—and comparing them with trusted benchmarks like the ASFA Retirement Standard—you ensure your retirement isn’t merely “comfortable,” but deeply meaningful. Savour the journey, embrace your bucket list, and live the retirement you’ve earned.
If you are not sure whether or not you will be able to afford your goals in retirement, then consider booking an initial FREE retirement meeting with Warren Strybosch, an award winning financial advisor and speaker, who can help you Find Retirement (www.findretirement.com.au) with ease.

To Pay or Not to Pay the RAD? What You Need to Know About Aged Care Costs
AGED CARE
By Warren Strybosch
Moving into aged care is a big life change, and one of the biggest questions families face is whether to pay the Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) up front, or to hold onto assets and instead pay the Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP).
From 1 November 2025, new aged care rules will apply, including a 2% retention fee on RADs for up to 5 years. Many people are now asking: does it still make sense to pay the RAD?
The short answer: for most people who have the money available, paying the RAD is still the smarter choice. Here’s why.
What is a RAD and a DAP?
• RAD (Refundable Accommodation Deposit): A lump sum paid to the aged care home. Most (but not all) is refunded when you leave or pass away.
• DAP (Daily Accommodation Payment): An ongoing “rentstyle” payment charged if you don’t pay the RAD in full.
If you only pay part of the RAD, you’ll also pay a DAP on the unpaid amount.
New 2% Retention Fee
From November 2025, aged care homes will keep 2% of the RAD each year for up to 5 years. After that, no more is deducted. The remaining balance is refunded to you or your estate.
Example – Maree’s RAD of $500,000
After 5 years, Maree’s estate would be refunded $452,381
The Cost of Not Paying the RAD
If you don’t pay the RAD, you must pay the DAP. This is calculated using the Maximum Permissible Interest Rate (MPIR), which is set by the Government. For example, if the MPIR is 7.78%, and you don’t pay a $500,000 RAD, you’ll be charged around $38,900 a year
From 1 November 2025, DAPs will also increase with inflation (CPI).
Example – Maree with no RAD paid
The DAP starts high and keeps increasing, which can put pressure on cashflow.
Other Things to Consider
• Centrelink impacts: A RAD is not counted in the Age Pension assets test, but it does count for aged care fees.
• Tax: Paying a RAD might reduce your taxable income if it replaces investments earning income.
• Estate planning: RAD refunds are part of your estate. By contrast, money in joint accounts often goes directly to the surviving owner.
• Government protection: All RADs are guaranteed by the Commonwealth, even if the aged care home fails.
Case Study – Maddy
Maddy, aged 85, needs aged care after November 2025. She has chosen a home that requires a $750,000 RAD. She owns a house worth $1.7m and has $50,000 in the bank.
Comparing outcomes (simplified example)
So, Should You Pay the RAD?
While every family’s situation is different, paying the RAD is usually better if you have the money available. The 2% retention fee slightly reduces the refund, but the savings from avoiding ongoing DAPs (which grow with inflation) usually outweigh the cost.
Planning for aged care is about more than just covering fees—it’s about reducing financial stress, protecting your estate, and giving peace of mind for both you and your family.

Paying the RAD results in smaller ongoing costs and a higher estate value for her family.
How to Decide – A Simple Checklist
When weighing up whether to pay the RAD, consider the following:
• Do you have the cash available? If you need to sell your home or investments, think about timing and market conditions.
• What’s your cashflow like? Paying a RAD reduces ongoing fees (DAPs), which can make budgeting easier.
• Do you receive the Age Pension? Paying a RAD may increase your entitlement, as it’s not counted under the pension asset test.
• What are your estate goals? A RAD refund will go into your estate. If you prefer assets to pass directly to a spouse or joint owner, this might influence your choice.
• How important is certainty? Paying a RAD gives peace of mind by avoiding rising DAPs linked to inflation.
• Do you want flexibility? You don’t always have to pay the full RAD upfront—you can start with a smaller amount and top it up later.
