The City of Geelong is one of Victoria’s largest regional capital cities. Geelong had a population of approximately 230,000 as at the 2019 Report which includes 16,000 businesses. Geelong’s location is in strong growth corridor, making it an ideal location for businesses to explore options outside of the capital city.
The Find Geelong acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands where Geelong now stands, the Wadawuarrung people of the Kulin nation, and pays repect to their Elders - past, present and emerging - and acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within our community.
The Find Geelong was established in 2019 and is owned by the Find Foundation, a Not-For-Profit organisation with is core focus of helping other Not-For-Profits, schools, clubs and other similar organisations in the local community - to bring everyone together in one place and to support each other. We provide the above organisations FREE advertising in the community paper to promote themselves as well as to make the community more aware of the services these organisations can offer. The Find Geelong has a strong editorial focus and is supported via local grants and financed predominantly by local business owners.
Readers are advised that the Find Geelong accepts no responsibility for financial, health or other claims published in advertising or in articles written in this newspaper. All comments are of a general nature and do not take into account your personal financial situation, health and/or wellbeing. We recommend you seek professional advice before
Like it or not, your clients are going to need aged care advice. That is why we believe every adviser should be knowledgeable about aged care advice. There are three great reasons to incorporate aged care advice into your service offering.
1] The critical third phase: By breaking retirement into three distinct phases, (active, quiet, and frailty years) you can help your clients understand and plan for their future.
2] Growing demand: There are now more than half a million Australians who are aged 85 and over and at age 65, a person’s chance of needing aged care during their lifetime is also high. Aged care is complicated, and great advice can make a big difference.
3] Meeting the Code of Ethics: The Code of Ethics, while initially causing stress, aims to strengthen the advice profession by prioritising clients. Given the high probability of clients experiencing frailty, aged care planning is crucial.
Ready to make aged care advice part of your practice? Get in touch with us today to learn how we can help you build the knowledge and tools you need to support your clients through every stage of retirement.

This year introduces Flavours of the World, where you can take your tastebuds to Greece, France, Malaysia, Ukraine, Mexico and more. Enjoy a Ukrainian dinner, a French brunch, or a night out inspired by Mexico City - no passport required.
For the foodies, celebrity chef Adrian Richardson will host an Italian multicourse dinner using produce from Lonsdale Tomato Farm matched with wine from Lethbridge Wines.
Cheese lovers can’t go past the tasting session at Splatters Cheese Bar in Pakington Street, and 1915 Restaurant will deliver a smoky, slow-cooked winter dinner to remember.

As the calendar flips to July, a new financial year begins — and with it, a fresh opportunity to take stock, realign your goals, and build strong financial habits for the year ahead. Whether you’re planning for retirement, growing your wealth, or simply trying to get better control of your cash flow, July is the ideal time to get organised.
Here are seven smart steps to set yourself up for a financially successful 2025–26.
1. Review the Year That Was
• Assess income, expenses, savings
• Did you meet your financial goals? What surprised you?
2. Reassess Your Financial Goals
• Update your short- and long-term goals
• Consider life changes (job, family, health, retirement plans)
3. Rebalance Your Portfolio
• Consider risk profile, do you need to rebalance your investments so that they are in line with your preferred asset allocation?
4. Plan Your Super Contributions Early
• Do you wish to set up monthly contributions (such as a salary sacrifice) to spread out cash flow?
• Consider carry-forward and bringforward rules – if you are not sure what these are do you need to seek professional financial advice?
5. Budget Refresh and Spending Audit
• Review your monthly cash flow
• Identify your planned budget, do you need to review your spending in any areas?
• Consider reviewing providers for things like car insurance, home insurance and health insurance. Could you save money by taking time to go through this process?
6. Documentation
• Would it help you to start the year off by keeping better records this year?
• Ensure you’re keeping accurate records from the beginning of the financial year. Digital tools or apps can make this easy and efficient.
7. Estate Planning and Insurance Check
• Do you need to review beneficiaries, wills, powers of attorney?
• Check personal insurance cover (which may include Total and Permanent Disablement, Life cover, income protection and trauma cover), are these still appropriate for your circumstances?
The start of a new financial year is more than a date on the calendar — it’s an opportunity to take control of your finances and build momentum toward achieving goals.

The mindset shift that helps leaders reclaim clarity, energy and control.
“I’m doing everything I can, but I still feel behind.”
If that sentence rings true, you’re not alone.
You’re not a bad leader. You’re not broken.
You’ve just been trained to respond more than strategise
In today’s fast-paced work culture, the expectation to solve problems instantly, make decisions on the fly, and “just get on with it” is embedded. But real leadership? It demands more than reaction time.
It requires strategy...
and most people aren’t taught how to think that way.
The Problem Isn’t Motivation. It’s Misalignment.
The leaders I work with aren’t short on energy. They care deeply. They want results.
But they’re operating from a place of:
• Constant reactivity
• Mental overload
• Endless tasks with little traction
• Short-term thinking, stretched across too many priorities
They’re not lazy. They’re overloaded. And they’re making decisions in survival mode, not strategy mode
But strategic thinking isn’t something you’re born with.
It’s not a personality trait, and it’s definitely not reserved for execs or analysts.
It’s a practical skillset that anyone can learn - especially leaders! When you do, everything changes.
You start recognising patterns, not just reacting to symptoms.
You get clearer on what matters most.
You stop chasing every opportunity, and instead double down on what works.
You move from spinning plates to setting direction.
Inside my Power To Lead approach, we work with a framework and practical tools that make strategic thinking simple and sustainable:
• The Strategic Edge Playbook - a guide to build your own decision filter and getback to what matters
• Self-Leadership Blueprint - clarity and rhythm to stop overwhelm before it starts
• Energy-to-Impact Checklist audit what’s fuelling you vs. what’s draining you
And we anchor it all in the SHARP Model:
• Self-Awareness
• Honesty
• Alignment
• Resilience
• Purpose When you lead from the inside out, strategic thinking becomes natural, not another pressure point.
It’s Not About Doing More. It’s About Thinking Better.
If you feel like your brain’s working overtime but the results aren’t landing... it’s time for a reset.
Not of your motivation. But of your approach.
Want to learn how to think more strategically in your leadership? Send me an email at hello@sallyh.au and mention this article, and I’ll send you the Strategic Edge Playbook.

You wake up in the morning, check your phone, and see notifications that your online payments have been received through the night, you’ve got notifications from all the different cloud services you use. Everything just works… Right?
In 2025, the digital landscape continues to evolve at lightning speed-but so do cyber threats. For small businesses, especially those across regional centers like Geelong, Victoria, the risk is no longer. From phishing scams to ransomware attacks, cybercrime is a daily reality that can cripple even the most well-run business. In FY2023-24, according to the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), they registered more than 36,700 calls to its Australian Cyber Security Hotline, marking a 12% rise compared to the prior financial year. The average expense of cybercrime for small businesses increased by 8% to $49,600. The average self-reported cost of cybercrime per incident for individuals rose by 17% to $30,700.
That is why it is necessary to assess where you and your business stand when it comes to cybersecurity.
These steps, while simple, are costeffective and can help protect you and your business.
Updates to your devices and software often contain new features or change the functionality of the application you use, but one of the most important aspects of updates is the security updates. These security updates allow the latest bugs to be remedied on devices, whether it be your laptop or your phone and remove the vulnerability.
Patching these security vulnerabilities is made easy with Automatic Updates. Ensuring your device is set to update automatically means you won’t have to even think about updating.
(MFA)
Passwords are vulnerable to compromise, and Multi-Factor Authentication gives you an extra layer of security. MFA will require a combination of multiple pieces of information only you know, such as a password, rolling number (authenticator
app, RSA token), physical device or even a biometric reading.
Securing your accounts with an MFA is a must-do in our connected life, some examples of high-quality MFAs are.
• YubiKey (https://www.yubico.com)
• Microsoft Authenticator (https:// www.microsoft.com/en-au/security/ mobile-authenticator-app)
• Google Authenticator (https:// support.google.com/accounts/ answer/1066447)
• Duo (https://duo.com)
How to check if my login information has been compromised
A great online tool run by Australian Troy Hunt is the website Have I Been Pwned
This allows you to check if your email and password have been compromised by any large data breaches. No organisation is immune to data breaches with these well-known Australian businesses hit; Optus, Medibank, Latitude Financial, and Pizza Hut, to just name a few recent.
Endpoint Protection
Anti-virus, EDR, XDR, MDR. While there are many names for endpoint protection, and it is an important element in protecting your devices with market leaders offering ransomware protection (rollback) and other advanced features. Protect your business by protecting your devices.

I just watched The Diary of a CEO episode featuring Amjad Masad, Bret Weinstein, and Daniel Priestley, and one idea stopped me in my tracks:
AI agents, digital employees that think, search, decide, and act on their own.
They’re already being used to replace thousands of jobs in some of the world’s biggest companies. And you can build one in minutes.
It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by that.
But working in the not-for-profit space, my mind went somewhere else entirely:
What if this same technology, so disruptive to business, could actually unlock capacity for the organisations doing the most good?
Most NFPs don’t have 100 staff. Some don’t even have 10.
They’re underfunded, overworked, and still out here changing lives.
Imagine if they had access to smart, ethical AI agents that could:
· Write donor emails
· Analyse data
· Draft reports · Schedule campaigns · Handle admin
· Run operations 24/7
Not to replace staff, but to give them time back.
Time to connect. To build. To breathe.
At Good Cause, we haven’t rolled out AI agents for our clients (yet). But we’re watching closely. Testing the waters. Asking better questions.
How can we make this accessible to small teams?
How do we protect ethics and data?
And how do we use this power to lift people, not just profits?
Because the future isn’t waiting.
But we can shape how it shows up.

Amended legislation under ss 25-5 and 26-5 of the ITAA 1997 will deny deductions for Australian Taxation Office (ATO) interest charges, specifically the general interest charge (GIC) and shortfall interest charge (SIC), incurred in income years starting on or after 1 July 2025.
GIC is incurred when tax debts have not been paid on time. SIC is incurred when a tax liability has been incorrectly self-assessed and resulted in a shortfall of tax paid. Removing these deductions is intended to encourage taxpayers to correctly self-assess their tax liabilities and pay on time.
This measure was announced in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook 2023–24 and received Parliamentary approval in March 2025 to become law.
The ATO imposes interest in specific situations, including: - late payment of taxes and penalties - an increase in tax liability as a result of an amended assessment, and - an increase in other tax liabilities, such as goods and services tax or pay as you go amounts.
Next steps
The Commissioner may remit the interest charges in circumstances where it is fair and reasonable to do so. As they are no longer deductible, the remittance of the interest charges will no longer be considered an assessable recoupment.
If you are SAP taxpayer, then the denial of deduction for SIC and GIC incurred starts from the first day of your SAP that begins after 1 July 2025.
We encourage you to consider paying off or setting up payment plans for any overdue tax debts before 1 July 2025. Any partial payments will also help reduce non-deductible GIC charged post 1 July 2025.
Any GIC or SIC incurred prior to 1 July 2025 is not impacted by the changes to the law and will continue to be deductible for your 2024-25 and earlier tax returns.
If you (have) or plan to deduct GIC or SIC for the 2024–25 or an earlier income year and it is later remitted, the amount that is remitted will need to be included in your assessable income in the year in which the remission occurred.
We can assist you in managing your tax liabilities in a timely manner or engage with the ATO on your behalf to avoid interest and penalties.
Please contact our office if you have any queries in relation to this matter.

When it comes to running a successful business, profit often takes the spotlight. However, there’s another equally—if not more—important financial metric that can make or break a company: cash flow. While profit is a measure of success, cash flow is the lifeblood of day-to-day operations. Understanding cash flow and how to manage it effectively is a key skill in bookkeeping and financial management.
Cash flow refers to the movement of money in and out of a business over a given period. It includes all sources of income (cash inflow) and all payments or expenses (cash outflow). The goal is to maintain a positive cash flow meaning more money is coming in than going out.
There are three main types of cash flow:
1. Operating Cash Flow – Money generated from a company’s core business activities, such as sales of goods or services.
2. Investing Cash Flow – Cash related to the buying or selling of long-term assets, like equipment or property.
3. Financing Cash Flow – Cash received from or paid to investors and creditors, such as loan repayments, dividends, or capital injections.
Even a profitable business can fail if it doesn’t manage cash properly. For example, you might have strong sales and show a net profit on paper, but if customers are slow to pay invoices, you might not have enough cash on hand to pay your bills or employees. This is where cash flow becomes critical.
Positive cash flow allows you to:
• Pay suppliers, rent, and wages on time
• Reinvest in your business
• Weather financial setbacks
• Plan for growth
On the other hand, negative cash flow— when expenses exceed income—can quickly lead to debt or insolvency if not addressed.
Bookkeeping is the foundation of good cash flow management. Accurate, up-todate records help you understand where your money is going, where it’s coming from, and how much cash is available at any time.
A bookkeeper tracks every financial transaction and classifies it correctly— ensuring that inflows and outflows are recorded in real time. This detailed recordkeeping makes it possible to:
• Generate cash flow statements, which summarise cash movements over a period
• Monitor accounts receivable and accounts payable
• Forecast future cash needs
• Identify trends and potential shortfalls
Bookkeepers also play a key role in reconciling bank statements and ensuring that your recorded cash balance matches what’s actually in the bank.
1. Invoice Promptly and Clearly: Delays in billing mean delays in payment. Send invoices as soon as a job is completed and make sure payment terms are clear.
2. Follow Up on Late Payments: Don’t be afraid to chase overdue invoices. Consider offering discounts for early payment or charging late fees.
3. Monitor Expenses: Regularly review your spending. Look for areas to cut costs without sacrificing quality.
4. Plan for Seasonality: If your business is seasonal, plan ahead by saving surplus cash during peak months.
5. Build a Cash Reserve: A buffer of a few months’ operating expenses can provide security during lean periods.
Cashflowismorethanjustabookkeeping buzzword—it’s a vital component of financial health. Bookkeepers provide the structure and accuracy necessary to track, analyse, and improve cash flow. By keeping a close eye on where money is coming from and going to, businesses can make smarter decisions, avoid cash shortages, and create a more stable financial future.
In short, managing cash flow well doesn’t just keep the lights on—it keeps your business moving forward.

There are many wood surfaces inside a building that need painting. Skirting boards, dados, architraves, window frames picture rails, feature timber walls and furniture –all require different painting technique to plaster walls.
Here is a step-by-step guide to achieving a smooth, painted finish.
1. Cover work surface
Spread plastic sheeting on the floor around the to-be-painted area so it doesn’t get splashed on. Laying newspaper or canvas on top of the plastic will stop you slipping on the plastic beneath and also soaks up paint spills.
2. Prepare wooden surface
Don rubber gloves and goggles or glasses to protect your hands and eyes. Mix a solution of water and TSP, sugar soap or borax according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip a cloth in the solution, squeeze dry and wipe all surfaces to be painted. Rinse with another cloth dipped in clear, warm water. Let the timber dry completely.
Now check for any holes, gouges, nicks or scratches. Fill them in with wood filler using a flexible putty knife.
3. Sand the surface
Don a dust mask or respirator and hearing protection. Sand the timber flat areas with a random orbital sander and 200–280 grit sandpaper. This helps the wooden surface to bond with the paint. Sanding by hand is better for uneven surfaces such as you find on furniture.
4. Clean off dust
Using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove the dust and wipe with a damp cloth.
5. Prime wooden surface
Mix your primer well and apply with a brush or roller. When it has dried, check to see if the primer is transparent or streaky; if so, apply the primer a second time. A roller will prime a flat surface more quickly and leave it with a smoother finish.
6. Sand again
Use 220-grit sandpaper to sand down the dry surface again. Apply light pressure so that gouges don’t form.
7. Clean again
Use a vacuum cleaner and cloth as before to wipe away the dust.
8. Paint the surface
Foam-density rollers are useful for painting large surfaces. Insert a paint tray liner into the paint tray, then pour in paint so that it
fills the tray less than halfway. Gently dab the roller into the paint and roll the paint up and down the slope of the tray a few times to distribute the paint evenly onto the roller. Roll the paint lightly onto the wooden surface. A high-density foam roller gives better coverage with thinner latex paint than with oil-based paints.
Paintbrushes are better for fiddlier jobs like window frames and furniture. Insert the bristles of the brush into the paint can just a third of their length each time you need more paint. Once on the wooden surface, stroke the brush in a parallel direction to the wood grain. Use short strokes. Keep a wet edge at all times so that you don’t leave overlapping marks.
For a more professional appearance, you could try spraying the surface rather than using a paint brush.
Do not be tempted to apply a second coat of paint after this coat has dried, as this will cause the paint to tear.
9. Sand the first coat
The way to achieve a smoother finish is to sand and paint one more time. When the first coat had dried, sand as before. This will flatten any bumps or inconsistencies introduced by the roller or paintbrush.
Gently sand by hand with 220-grit sandpaper. If using an orbital sander, attach the sandpaper and run it as lightly as possible over the surface. Do not apply any other weight except that of the sander itself.
After sanding, bunch up a cloth. Keeping it loose, run it lightly over the surface. If you apply too much pressure, the cloth ‘s surface may embed itself onto the wood.
10. Apply a second coat of paint
Apply a second coat with the roller or brush, and let dry, preferably overnight. Paint is more durable the longer it is left to dry.
For more painting advice on painting in winter, contact Dahllof Painting Services at kerna1967@gmail.com.We will be happy to answer all your inquiries.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is defined as consistently high arterial blood pressure: a systolic pressure of over 130mmHg or diastolic pressure of more than 90mmHg. It is a major risk for cardiovascular disease and is present in over one third of Australians.
Like water in a pipe, blood flows through your blood vessels: arteries and veins. When the blood vessels are narrow more pressure is required, and when the walls of the of the blood vessels are stiff, they don’t increase in diameter to allow for more pressure. This causes blood pressure to increase, rather than adjusting to these changes.
Atherosclerosis (arterial plaque build-up) is the main cause of hypertension, but it is also caused by other factors such as diabetes, obesity, and sleep apnoea. Lifestyle factors such as excess sodium or alcohol, smoking and lack of physical activity also increases the risk, and sadly, as you age, changes in collagen causes blood vessels to stiffen leading to increased blood pressure.
Sympathetic nervous system, “fight or flight” dominance is higher with obesity, metabolic syndrome, heart failure and renal disease. This also causes the release of the hormone cortisol, which leads to inflammation. Inflammation reduces the normal regulation of blood vessel constriction and relaxation which means a higher blood pressure.
Obviously, if your sodium or alcohol intake is high, these need to be reduced. Diets that are high in fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains and low in refined carbohydrates (think sugar and white flour products) such as the Mediterranean have been well researched to prevent hypertension.
Garlic has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve arterial health. It also regulates cholesterol, as well as reducing waist circumference, body mass index (BMI) and inflammatory markers. It’s really helpful in both prevention and treatment of high blood pressure.
Consuming oily fish improves blood pressure and blood vessel function, it is recommended to eat oily fish at least twice a week. Fatty acids found in fish reduce blood pressure, improve blood vessel and heart function, are antiinflammatory and antioxidant.
Chinese population studies show that just 1 cup/day of green tea or Oolong tea significantly reduces the risk of developing hypertension. It has found to be antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective. Black tea is from the same plant and will also reduce blood pressure, although green tea is more effective.
Blueberries are high in flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, amongst other antioxidants, and have been shown to reduce inflammation which is present in hypertension. Vitamin C is also found in capsicum, tomato, citrus fruit, and cruciferous vegetables, Vitamin E is found in the oils of nuts and seeds, leafy vegetables, eggs and dairy.
Aerobic exercise improves atrial stiffness in hypertension and also improves other risks for cardiovascular disease. It is recommended that in order to reduce blood pressure, a combination of moderate to vigorous exercise as well as strength training should be incorporated into your routine
If you need further support to reduce your blood pressure, there are many other natural products that can help.

Eight schools in Greater Geelong participated last year, with students from Fyans Park Primary School and Northern Bay College winning NAIDOC Medals of Excellence and prizes. We look forward to recognising this year’s recipients.
Our libraries across Greater Geelong are holding multiple Storytelling with Art sessions, providing 5-12 year olds the opportunity to listen to stories and create their own, using First Nations symbols and modern elements. Limited places are available.
There are several other events and activities happening across Greater Geelong for Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, First Nations people and community members of all backgrounds, including:

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“The projections on City Hall will be vibrant and engaging for people of all ages.
We are proud to showcase these expressive works from local First Nations artists through this project.
The projections are just one of the many ways community members can celebrate NAIDOC Week and learn more about First Nations Cultures and histories.
We are grateful for the contribution of Wadawurrung and First Nations artists in sharing their important stories and Culture with our community and visitors in celebration of NAIDOC Week.”
Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson
“I encourage the local community to check out the growing number of events in the calendar.
NAIDOC Week is a special time that provides an opportunity for community members to connect deeply with our region’s Wadawurrung and First Nations communities, their Culture and resilience.
These events and opportunities will be informative, educational, family friendly and welcoming to allies who want to show their support.”
Two innovative Geelong-based design projects are currently captivating international audiences, reinforcing the region’s growing reputation as a global leader in sustainable and creative innovation.
The Dell Eco Reef, an ocean-friendly artificial reef structure designed to restore coastal habitats, is currently on exhibit at the prestigious Trienal de Design de Covilhã in Portugal.
Meanwhile, Perpetual Pigments, a research-led design project exploring pigment extraction from textile waste, is featured at the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2025 in France – one of the world’s most influential events focused on design and social innovation.
These international exhibitions support the City of Greater Geelong’s International Engagement Strategy and its role as a designated UNESCO City of Design, highlighting how local creativity is contributing to global conversations around sustainability, circularity and community resilience.
The Dell Eco Reef, created by Australian designer Alex Goad in collaboration with the City of Greater Geelong, has already been trialled in the waters off Clifton Springs. It presents a scalable, naturepositive solution to coastal erosion and habitat loss, using modular, marine-friendly structures to support biodiversity and environmental restoration.
Perpetual Pigments, developed by Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials, pioneers a groundbreaking approach to sustainability by transforming textile waste into vibrant pigments. Supported by Sustainability Victoria, this world-first research extracts colour from discarded natural fibre textiles, producing micropigments suitable for applications in art, fashion and design. Co-curated by Dr Russell Kennedy and Dr Tonya Meyrick, the project included collaboration with First Nations artists who used the pigments to create works showcased during Geelong Design Week 2023.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“The projects exemplify the creativity and ingenuity of the region’s design and research sectors.
The Dell Eco Reef and Perpetual Pigments projects are outstanding examples of how Geelong designers are using creativity to address environmental and social challenges.
Exhibiting in Portugal and France places Geelong on the world stage, forging global connections and creating new pathways for collaboration, investment and shared learning.”
Environment & Circular Economy chair Councillor Elise Wilkinson
“Geelong’s design innovation is reshaping global conversations on sustainability.
These design projects’ innovative fusion of science, design and culture not only addressed environmental challenges but also celebrated identity and expression aligning strongly with the City of Greater Geelong’s values and its leadership as a UNESCO City of Design.
Together, these international exhibitions strengthen ties with other UNESCO Creative Cities and demonstrate Geelong’s ongoing commitment to innovation-led economic development, cultural diplomacy and global design leadership.”
We’ve improved accessibility and inclusivity for patrons of Norlane Aquatic and Recreation Centre (ARC) with the installation of new automatic doors leading to the warm water pool area.
The original doors were heavy and required manual operation, posing a challenge for community members with mobility issues. They often needed assistance from staff, carers, or fellow patrons to access the space.
Following community feedback, the City installed new automatic doors, which have transformed the experience for many by making the warm water pool hall more accessible and welcoming.
Since the installation, feedback from patrons has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have reported that the automatic doors have significantly improved ease of access and safety.
Verna, patron
“I absolutely love them. I couldn’t use the other doors and had to get someone to help, as I was frightened that I would fall. It’s brilliant now - I walk through them like I own the place!”
Lin, patron
“The new doors are the best thing ever! I’m so impressed because it was really hard before and if I was here on my own, I would need help opening the doors.”
This upgrade supports the City’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where all community members feel a sense of belonging, in line with our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2024-28.
“The large, cumbersome doors were not user-friendly for those with accessibility needs.
From the very start, we’ve wanted Norlane ARC to be transformative for our northern suburbs through its exercise and wellbeing facilities.
Once staff heard that the original doors were creating a barrier to independent access, they took meaningful action to improve accessibility and customer satisfaction.
We thank community members for speaking up and sharing their challenges with staff.”
Councillor Anthony Aitken
“Council is focused on helping to facilitate community members getting active and maintaining a healthier routine.
As chair of Council’s Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee, it is encouraging Council has been able to address this issue.
I hope the other accessibility improvement concerns identified can be resolved going forward, to enable the Norlane ARC to reach its full potential and inclusiveness of this wonderful investment in our northern suburbs.
Our recent 2024 Geelong Preventative Health Survey found that 92 per cent of people with disability self-reported lower levels of health, compared to 42 per cent of those without disability.
Warm water exercise is low impact and especially helpful for people living with disability and other conditions, managing chronic pain, or recovering from injury.
Ensuring access to this pool reflects the key priority areas in our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan.”
The Little Malop Street precinct has undergone a fresh facelift, delivering a cleaner, safer, and more inviting space in the heart of our city.
Led by the City of Greater Geelong’s City Works team, the project addressed a range of long-standing maintenance issues, including:
• deteriorated road surfaces on Little Malop Street and Downes Place;
• dirty and stained footpaths;
• misaligned and raised pavers creating trip hazards;
• damaged planter boxes and bollards;
• unsightly graffiti.
Community members and visitors are set to receive a free two-hour parking session in all 2P on-street spaces on weekdays across central Geelong from Monday 14 July.
Council adopted the initiative as part of the 2025-26 Budget last night with the aim of making it easier for locals and visitors to support businesses in the city and encouraging the revitalisation of central Geelong.
This key measure was councillor-led, backed by suggestions in our recent Central Geelong Revitalisation Forum.
Free parking will only apply to on-street 2P parking bays, and time limits will continue to apply. Each vehicle will be eligible for a single allocation of free parking in 2P bays per day.
To be eligible, drivers will still be required to start a parking session at the parking meter or through the EasyPark app, but there will be no charge.
Parking across the region remains free in all zones between 5.30pm – 9.00am and on weekends.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
Improving Little Malop Street aligns with our goal of attracting more people to the city centre and supporting local businesses.
We’re focused on drawing more people into central Geelong to boost the culture and local economy.
I look forward to continuing efforts to revitalise and maintain vibrant public spaces to create a welcoming city centre.
City of Greater Geelong chief executive Ali Wastie
This is a great example of how small, targeted improvements can make a big difference.
By enhancing the look, feel, and functionality of Little Malop Street, we’re creating a place where people want to live, work, and spend time.
We also aimed to reduce the need for ongoing maintenance, making this a smart investment for the future.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“Council is excited to roll out the weekday initiative next month.
We’ve listened to feedback from businesses, shoppers and residents who say they would benefit from a free parking initiative in central Geelong.
We want to make parking in the heart of our region easier by helping community members save money and boosting foot traffic for local businesses.”
This will be a great step forward for our economy and liveability.

We’re investing $3.4 million into our beloved Lara Golf Course to ensure it remains sustainable and a destination course for golfers in our region.
Water security initiatives, worth $2.4 million, have begun and will continue for around eight months. This will include drainage and dam remediation works, upgrades to course irrigation and a feasibility study into long-term sustainable water solutions.
With the course irrigation works soon to commence, there will be significant impacts to operations of the course during this time. The first nine holes will need to be closed approximately September/October 2025 to December 2025/January 2026, pending planning permit approvals. Play on the second nine holes will be affected from December 2025/January 2026 to April/May 2026. We are currently working through strategies to ensure the most efficient use of the course during this time.
A total of $1 million worth of upgrades are planned for the driving range and pro shop. At this stage, these works may start in September/October 2025.
Timings around the upgrades’ duration and closures may change without notice.
We’ve worked with the Project Control Group, made up of stakeholders from the golf club and City, on how to best manage the closures and reduce impacts to golfers.

“Golf is one of our region’s most popular participation sports.
Council is committed to ensuring Lara Golf Course is sustainable in the longterm through $3.4 million in upgrades.
While the rolling works to the fairways, greens, driving range and pro shop will cause short-term disruptions, they will future proof this facility and ensure a superior experience for the most discerning golfer.
We thank members and users for their patience during this time.”
You Yangs ward councillor Chris Burson
“Lara Golf Course is renowned for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere and lush Santa Ana couch fairways and greens.
We’re excited to improve the offering at Lara Golf Course, which boasts the most affordable green fees for an 18-hole course in the region.
The water security initiatives in particular will make a big difference to drainage across the site as we investigate long-term solutions.
We can’t wait to tee off on the improved course come mid 2026!”
The City of Greater Geelong has hosted its first Geelong India Business Roundtable, bringing together key state, national and international stakeholders to stimulate opportunities for business and investment.
The City-led event brought together the Consul General of India in Melbourne, Dr Sushil Kumar, representatives from the Australia India Business Council, the Australia India Chamber of Commerce, and local businesses such as Care Essentials and Enterprise Monkey.
Key government and education stakeholders were also present, such as Invest Victoria, Global Victoria, Regional Development Victoria, Deakin University, The Gordon, Geelong Manufacturing Council, Advanced Fibre Cluster, the Office of Richard Marles MP, Committee for Geelong, Geelong Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Wyndham.
As the fastest growing region in Australia and Victoria’s second largest city, migrants make up a significant portion of Geelong’s growing population, with Geelong being home to more than 5,000 residents born in India.
Dr Kumar spoke about the opportunities presented by India’s growing economy – from green energy to fintech – noting his support for ongoing dialogue with the City, while guest speaker Abhay
Sinha, Managing Director at Care Essentials and winner of 2023 Exporter of the Year at the Australian Export Awards, discussed the extensive entrepreneurial potential that exists when the two economies work together.
The roundtable provided a platform for guests to explore opportunities for future growth and investment with India, especially Geelong’s rapidly increasing Indianborn population and India’s projected status as the world’s third-largest economy by the end of the decade.
Progress is already being made to seek Sister City opportunities within India, while the City also hopes to work with Creative Victoria and Visit Victoria to explore Bollywood and tourism opportunities for Geelong, in addition to critical economic development initiatives.
The roundtable also served as the first step in plans for an upcoming Geelong–India International Business Forum, which will bring together businesses from across India and Greater Geelong to foster joint ventures, establish new trade pathways and investments and deepen links.
Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM
“I had high expectations for this event going in, but the first Geelong India Business Roundtable has absolutely exceeded them.
To have so many key representatives from both the Geelong and Indian economies in the one place to explore opportunities is a significant win for our City.
What is absolutely clear from the event is that there is so much opportunity for economic growth and new jobs for our City which is just waiting to be explored.
The mood in the room was extremely positive and collaborative, and people are already asking about when the next event will be held.”
The
‘The Art of Grieving’.
The exhibition will be held at the Geelong Regional Library and Heritage Centre as the centrepiece of National Grief Week, a Hope Bereavement Care (Hope) initiative taking place in August.
Last year’s inaugural Grief Week exhibition featured 26 artists displaying 64 works – including paintings, drawings, photographs, poems, sculptures, music and films. It attracted over 500 people to reflect on the universal but often misunderstood human experience of grief.
Hope established an Australian-first awareness week focused specifically on grief to change the societal conversation around the loss of loved ones and reduce any isolation and stigma faced by the bereaved – particularly those who have experienced pregnancy loss or loss by suicide.
A not-for-profit organisation reliant entirely on community funding, Hope assists residents of the wider Geelong region grieving after the sudden and unexpected loss of loved ones by providing free information, support groups and counselling.
Hope’s Community Access and Development Coordinator Melinda Hopper said National Grief Week 2024 had been “extremely well received” by locals.
“The feedback was that we achieved our aim of creating conversation, increasing awareness and bringing hope,” Hopper said. “The events on offer gave our community cause to reflect upon their own experiences, thoughts and ideas about grief and loss.
“Grief Week 2025 activities will aim to challenge our community further. We hope the art exhibition challenges visitors to lean into those sometimes difficult but important conversations about grief and loss.
“Ultimately, we want visitors to take away some hope –hope for a future where grief is more talked about, better understood and where we all feel better equipped to navigate it when the time comes.”
‘The Art of Grieving’ officially launches on Sunday 17 August at the start of Grief Week 2025 and will remain open until Thursday 28 August. The exhibition will showcase the evocative works of Hope clients and other community members in order to increase awareness of grief as a normal response to loss.
“As a population of predominantly migrants who bring their traditions, phobias and taboos with them, we don’t ‘deal’ with death well (in Australia),” said Loretta, an attendee at last year’s Grief Week exhibition.
“Even as a bereaved parent myself, I shy away from others’ pain and loss. I feel guilty that I should do more or be someone who is more open, but I still find it difficult.
“This is why Grief Week is important. It’s for being seen in our grief, seeing others in theirs and just learning that being in that space is what is required of us.”
Other attendees at Hope’s 2024 art exhibition described the experience as “cathartic” and the atmosphere at the gallery as “so supportive” and “really joyous”.
Highlights of the inaugural launch event included a music performance led by a young Hope client whose brother died by suicide and speeches by people with lived experience of traumatic loss.
“I was personally very touched by hearing the music and stories of the presenters sharing their grief journeys,” said an attendee who wished to remain anonymous.
“As the mother of a recent suicide of one of my adult children, it truly touched my heart and I felt one of the speakers in particular was telling my grief story. She put into words exactly how I have been feeling but hadn’t been able to vocalise.”
Another attendee, Margaret, expressed gratitude for the Geelong community having the opportunity to participate in a grief-specific awareness week.
“If only it could happen in every town and open up the conversations about grief, it would be a wonderful thing and could broaden the ways the bereaved might find release and comfort,” she said.
Community members wishing to attend the 2025 art exhibition launch event can respond online at evt.to/eiomuidiw, while anyone interested in being a Grief Week sponsor can view Hope’s sponsorship proposal here

The Geelong Animal Welfare Society has launched its Winter fundraising campaign and is calling for donations to support vulnerable cats and dogs waiting for their forever homes.
Last financial year, almost 3600 animals came into GAWS’ care. As a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation, GAWS is encouraging people to donate to its Winter Appeal and help animals in its shelter.
It costs GAWS an average of $65 a day to provide care and essentials to one animal. The organization hopes to raise $60,000, with donations going towards food, shelter, medical care and enrichment.
GAWS CEO Helen Cocks said: “At GAWS, we believe every life is precious and worth every minute and dollar invested in them to prepare them for adoption.
“We are hoping our community can support in way of donations to enable us to continue to provide the best care possible to the hundreds of cats and dogs admitted to our shelter.”
During the Winter Appeal campaign, GAWS is sharing heartfelt winter tales through emails, social stories and its website; real stories of resilience and hope. From the moment a frightened animal arrives at the shelter who has been lost, abandoned or surrendered to the days of healing, care, and trust that follow, these journeys are nothing short of miraculous.
These are more than just stories; they remind us that with compassion and kindness, lives can be transformed. But for every happy ending, there’s still one more animal who’s patiently waiting.
The tale of Nutmeg
Injured and barely able to continue, Nutmeg was found injured while trying to protect her kittens.Upon arrival, the GAWS veterinary team acted quickly. A complex emergency surgery was performed to remove the bullet and treat her life-threatening internalinjuries.Later, asecondoperationwasrequiredtoremove her severely damaged eye.Though the surgeries were long and uncertain,Nutmeg pulled through thanks to the dedicated GAWS vet team.
Nutmeg’s story quickly gained media attention, appearing on the front page of the local newspaper, sparking community outrage and compassion. X-rays showing the bullet lodged in her body highlighting the reality of animal cruelty and the vital role of welfare organizations.
Though now living with one eye, she continues to show affection, resilience, and love. Her story is a powerful reminder that every animal deserves safety, dignity, and care.
Nutmeg, the two-year-old domestic short hair, cost more than $10,600 during her 106 day stay. The sweet and affectionate cat received the best of care including extensive pain management, surgical bullet removal, desexing, exploratory laparotomy, eye enucleation, whole body x-rays, along with essential medical services and general care. Nutmeg’s medical expenses alone cost more than $3,690.
The GAWS shelter receives no government funding, with income generated from donations, fundraising and support of the local community. People can help by encouraging others to donate to the GAWS Winter Appeal and help more animals find the warmth, safety and love they so deeply deserve.

Winter is truly upon us in Geelong and we are rugging up against the cold and moving about to get warm.
Sharing laughter with other people and laughing for no reason at all is one of the best ways you can warm your body and soul.
During the cold winter months the benefit of laughing out loud can be felt right from the moment you take your first breath. Scientific studies have shown that people of all ages benefit from regular laughter yoga sessions in a group.
In the words of the Founder of Laughter Yoga, Indian physician Dr Madan Kataria, “It combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing techniques which brings more oxygen to our body and brain making us feel more energetic and healthy. Ten to 15 minutes of laughter yoga exercises can reduce stress, make your imune system stronger and keep your mind positive during challenging times”.
Laughter yoga provides a rich network of caring-sharing relationships with people and builds communities. Since laughter is a universal language, you can connect with people from all around the world irrespective of language, culture and country.
Laughter can positively impact our physical emotional and social wellbeing lowering stress, depression and anxiety. In a world full of noise, laughter cuts through and connects, and is a powerful tool for a lasting effect.
Hundreds of people, some daily, at one of the thousands of social community laughter clubs around the world, come together like those laughers who gather every Saturday between 9:00 – 9:30 am at Eastern Beach in front of the wading pool to enjoy the happiest way to wellness.
Saturday 19 July Laughter Club will celebrate 25 years of bringing more laughter and joy into the lives of hundreds of people. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to come along and join in the fun.

QUALITY OVER COST: What should be the ultimate indicator for your home security devices?
By investing in quality, you’re investing in peace of mind and long-term security for your household.
Ensuring the safety of your home and loved ones requires prioritizing quality over cost when choosing home security devices. Quality ensures reliability, durability, and performance, providing effective protection and peace of mind.
Here are the qualities that you should look out for when choosing your devices. It is important to note that in Victoria, all security installers that you do hire would need to be fully licensed by Victoria Police.
Look for devices from reputable brands with a track record of reliability. Read customer reviews and testimonials to gauge the reliability of the product.
Choose a brand that offers excellent customer support and provides reliable technical assistance when needed. This ensures that any issues or concerns with your security devices can be addressed promptly.
Warranty
Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer to safeguard your investment. A longer warranty period indicates the manufacturer’s confidence in the quality and durability of their product.
Integration
Consider whether the device integrates seamlessly with other components of your home security system or with other smart home devices you may already own. Compatibility with popular smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant can enhance functionality and convenience.
Here are some devices that you could consider to install and have in your home.
A smart doorbell with a built-in camera allows you to see and communicate with visitors at your doorstep from anywhere using your smartphone. It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance the security of your front entrance.
Install entry sensors on your doors and windows to detect when they are opened or closed. These sensors trigger an alert whenever a door or window is breached, providing an early warning of potential intruders.
Motion Sensors
Place motion sensors in key areas inside your home, such as the main entryway or hallways. These sensors detect movement and can trigger an alarm to alert you of any unauthorized activity when you’re away.
Display visible signs and stickers indicating that a security system protects your home. This can act as a deterrent to potential intruders and make them think twice before attempting a break-in. You can request Neighbourhood Watch stickers for free if you email admin@nhw.com.au for you to have on your window.
If you are still unsure, request a quote with our partner, RACV to find the right and tailored solution for your home https://www.racv.com.au/home/home-security/ alarm-systems
REMEMBER – when you receive notifications/alerts to your phone of activity at your home - if a crime is occurring at that time, call Triple Zero, no matter what time of day or night.
If you are reviewing footage and find suspicious activity at your home or to your property, report to Police Assistance Line on 131 444
A not-for-profit venture led by a dedicated, passionate committee of communityminded individuals with a variety of skills. This event has become a flourishing annual celebration prominently featured on the Geelong calendar. We’re dedicated to creating a positive impact through the vibrant art scene, making our mark as a must-attend, uplifting occasion in the local community.
In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.
You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.
There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.
Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.
FC Leopold was established in 2016 by Jared Larkins and Mitchell Vials. The club is based in Leopold, Victoria and played its first competitive games in 2017. A gold medal at the national level is a fantastic achievement, but to win five in the same national meet twice and also set meet records in all five events both times, is amazing!
Athletic ability came naturally to Kobi Matheson who began competing with the Corio Little Athletics Centre when he was six.
Kobi is very talented in a range of track and field events, consistently medals in State and National competitions and is an athlete to watch in the coming years.
“My dad got me into athletics just for fun and then he started training me as I wanted to get better.”
At under 9, Kobi who has cerebral palsy was classified as a multi-class athlete (an athlete with a disability) to compete at Region and State level and his athletics career has skyrocketed since.
By under 10, Kobi developed a passion for shot put and discus and began training with his coaches Chris and Elle Larkins.
“They are the reason I can throw so well. They come to every Region and State Championships to help me and the others they train.”
Kobi also enjoyed javelin, and began training in this as well although javelin was not an available multi-class event.
“In 2024 Little Athletics Victoria made javelin an official multi-class event and I was so excited. It was my first time competing in javelin at State level. I had been waiting for this day, and the first time I competed I won!”
In 2024 Kobi also won State level gold in shot put, discus, long jump and bronze in 200m, qualifying him to represent Victoria in the Australian Little Athletics Championships (ALAC) in Adelaide where he won gold in all five events.
In April 2025, Kobi represented Victoria for the second time at ALAC in Adelaide and for the second year won gold in all five events.
Not only did Kobi win five gold twice, he also set meet records in every event each year. An outstanding effort.
“ALAC is an amazing experience. You get to cheer teammates on, watch others from around Australia and it’s a great way to make friends.”
In 2023 Kobi competed in Launceston as co-captain of the School Sport Australia Victorian team, and won three gold and a bronze personal medal, along with two bronze relay team medals.
His ambition is to “one day become an Olympian” and his coaches and the Corio Little Athletics Centre would not be surprised if he does.
Kobi‘s coach Elle says “Kobi is very dedicated and determined to achieve the best from himself and we have no doubt that he will succeed in the goals he sets his mind to. We are very proud of his throwing success.”
Kobi says “I love doing athletics because it keeps me fit, and I get to see my friends every week. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of this if it wasn’t for my coaches, and my dad and his partner who drive me everywhere.”
Little Athletics Australia’s classification method groups athletes with disability to create meaningful (multi-class) competition.
In multi-class competition, athletes with a range of disabilities compete against each other and rankings are determined by calculating the percentage they scored against the baseline for their classification.
Inclusive opportunities are available for athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities, vision impairment, hearing impairment and transplant recipients. Athletes are required to submit medical reports and meet the minimum impairment criteria in order to compete. Award-winning Kiwi comedian, podcaster and improviser Guy Montgomery brings his new stand-up show ‘I’ve Noticed So Many Things, It’d Be Unfair To Keep Them To Myself’ to Costa Hall in 2025.
He’s well known to Australian audiences through TV shows like Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee, Have You Been Paying Attention and Thank God You’re Here.
The national tour will include dates at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the iconic Atheneum Theatre in Melbourne – where Montgomery will play his biggest Melbourne International Comedy Festival shows to date, the Perth Comedy Festival and the Sydney Comedy Festival, before shows in Brisbane, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Gold Coast and wrapping in Geelong.
Montgomery said, “People often wonder what I get up to when I’m not relaying my observations about the world to them and I’m finally ready to talk. The truth is whenever I’m not relaying my observations, I am out in the community, harvesting a fresh crop of bespoke observations. That’s what this show is about.”
The shows follow Montgomery’s sold out 2024 tour ‘Over 50,000,000 Guy Fans Can’t Be Wrong’ that saw him perform in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. In addition this year, Montgomery’s growing popularity in Australia led to him hosting the Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and saw his TV series Guy Montgomery’s Mont-Spelling Bee premiere on ABC TV.
Join Guy for a chance to think “I’ve also noticed that” or “I had not noticed that but now I think about it, that is a bit what it is like.”

After performing to packed houses at the Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane comedy festival, Bron Lewis brings her ‘Who’s Talking’ tour to Geelong!
Before Bron Lewis was one of Australia’s most promising new comedians, she was a high school teacher for almost a decade. Bron became a teacher because she hates learning – she would rather saw off her own legs then learn a new card game, and in her opinion whoever coined the term ‘board game’ was bang on. It was an era where she both nurtured young hearts and encouraged kids to be brilliant but also made some lifelong enemies. It was also, as it turns out, a hotbed for comedy and her new show Who’s Talking? touring Australia in 2025. There’s the smart kids, the quiet kids and then there’s those enemies as mentioned, who feature more in Who’s Talking? than the nerds.
Who’s Talking? reveals what your high school teacher really thought of you. Whether they believed your lame excuses, wanted to say to the Year 8 boy who refused to leave the class and more with hilarious stories of schoolroom antics.
Bron was the co-winner of the National Raw Comedy competition in 2022. Bron’s a regular panellist on the hit show Have You Been Paying Attention?, has appeared on Thank God You’re Here and The Project, has a prominent presence on stages all around the country.
Bron’s critically acclaimed show Probably sold out in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane and scored her a nomination for Best Newcomer at the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. In 2024 Bron followed up with her new show, Obviously, touring to sold-out audiences across Australia and also appearing on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Oxfam Gala.

Among the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music, and with 30 million albums sold worldwide, and over 2 Billion streams total for such monumental hits as “I’m Not In Love” (featured in Guardians of the Galaxy), and “Dreadlock Holiday”, 10cc are one of the very few acts to have achieved commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure.
And now, following their barnstorming Australian tour of 2023, 10cc return in 2025 to get audiences up on their feet, clapping, dancing and singing along to one of the most outstanding collections of eclectic hits ever to have emerged from the UK.
Says 10cc leader Graham Gouldman, “The band is sounding fantastic! Our main strength is the songs. Hit after hit after hit. It’s relentless. We show no mercy!”

Recently, the children at Story House Lara were so lucky to enjoy a Reconciliation Walk to the ‘Kevin Hoffman Walk’ in Lara. We discussed and recognised plants that we have in our own indigenous edible plant and herb garden here at the service.
We also discovered some new types of plants that were very interesting such as a Native Hibiscus in full flower and a few years more mature than the two that we planted in honour of ‘Sorry Day’.
Our service welcomes families from Lara and surrounding suburbs including Avalon, Lovely Banks and Corio.

The VFLW Cats returned home to Deakin University in winning form, bringing their relentless pressure throughout an intense match against the Western Bulldogs, finishing with a 23-point victory on Saturday afternoon.
With their first win of the 2025 season now under their belt, the young Cats outfit displayed plenty of confidence and composure in their clash with the Bulldogs - responding effectively in every measure of the match in a strong 8.9 (57) to 5.4 (34) win - which they will be looking to carry through for the remainder of the season.
Abby Favell (28 disposals, seven tackles, one goal) played a tough game, breaking through packs and charging the ball toward Geelong’s forwards, as did Mekah Morrissy (23 disposals, eight tackles, 10 clearances), who shined on Saturday with her excellent run-andcarry and ability to create scoring opportunities for her teammates.
Hayley Peck (23 disposals, 21 hitouts, eight intercepts) played a crucial role, winning stoppages from the centre and picking off marks from the opposition, while Mel Staunton (two goals, 15 disposals, six clearances) was Geelong’s only multiple goalkicker and inspired her group with her physical prowess.
Fresh off a breakthrough win last week, Geelong was energetic in the opening term as Poppy Schaap snapped through an early goal that ignited her team, followed up skilfully by Favell and Jemima Woods, who pushed the lead out to 14 points at the first break.
Staunton brought plenty of physical pressure from the centre to keep possession for the Cats, while Morrissy displayed excellent vision, hitting targets up forward in a dominant first quarter for the Cats.
After a late goal in the opening term, the Bulldogs kicked their second to push back Geelong’s relentless attacking pressure, but Lily Jordan slotted through her first major to keep the momentum in the Cats’ favour.
Favell continued her show of dominance with some tough play down the corridor, tallying 16 disposals and three score
involvements in a solid first half, as did Peck, who was instrumental in all facets of the game with 12 disposals and four intercepts.
Geelong remained determined throughout the second quarter, facing limited entries from the Bulldogs’ defensive set-up, but the run-and-carry play style from the Cats’ midfield set up Staunton for a goal after the siren, extending their lead to 24 points at half-time.
The Bulldogs came out strong after the main break, kicking the first two goals of the third term, but the Cats locked the ball inside their forward 50 from there, peppering through minor scores before Stephanie O’Kane found their answer late with her first goal to hold an 18-point margin to end the third term.
Geelong was defensively sound for the majority of the quarter, with the backline duo of Molly Walton and Faith Qoon combining for nine intercept possessions in the match to that point, stifling many of the Bulldogs efforts.
The fourth term continued the see-sawing action of the match as the Bulldogs kicked the first major, until Seisia White responded with a brilliant goal after marking the ball in a heavy contest, then Staunton later struck the final blow at the siren to give Geelong a 23-point win over the Western Bulldogs.

Yeah it was good, just some family time for me.
I think that was the last week of the byes, it was sort of spread out this year so it was nice to finally have a bit of a rest.
A few days off goes very quickly and suddenly you are straight back here and into it.
So some family time for me, I got away in the caravan which is always nice and sat around the campfire, which is very unlike me.
We are 10-5 and we are playing a good brand of football, when we do play at our best. There is a lot of improvements to come as well, so we know there is a bit to work on.
But when you come up against any team at the moment, it feels like anyone can push you and challenge you on any given day. You have got to be at your best for long periods throughout the game to get the result.
Cameron on the takeaways from the season so far
It has been really positive obviously, it has been good.

It has been a good start and we are looking forward to the pointy end of it.
Cameron on his own form
From a numbers view it probably looks alright, but I think I have still been very inconsistent.
Especially to start off the year, I started a little bit slow and it took me a bit to get going but it was nice to get going off the back of that.
It is like how I summed up our season as a whole, it has been a little bit inconsistent at times but positive overall.
Cameron on his career outlook
I don’t really sit back and put an endpoint on it, I haven’t done that yet.
I have always loved the game and loved playing, I love training as well and I think you are over halfway there.
I have always said that I am probably not the greatest in long meetings and that sort of thing, but we do it really well here and that keeps me young and fresh along with the younger players as well. I really enjoy having a young group coming through that are so bubbly, there is always something going on.
Sometimes I sit back and they are playing all these different games and things, I remember when I used to do that but now I just don’t have the energy for it.
Cameron on the challenge against Richmond
I look at Richmond and I sort of touched on it before, that any team can win on their day.
They have brought so much excitement to footy this year, the way they play they just go for it.
It is impressive to see the way they can move the ball and finish off, I think celebrating as one stands out to me for them when they do good things. As a young group it is important to stick together like that and really be present, enjoy the moment and that is someone I have always tried to carry through with my football.

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.
The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.
This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:
Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.
There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.
A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.
Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.
The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.
The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.
A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.
This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.
Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.
We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.
Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?
Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.
We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.
The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.
The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.
Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.
A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.
The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.
The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.
The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.
Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.
The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.
Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.
Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.
In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.
Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.
Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.
Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s
Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.
Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.
The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.
The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!
Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.
Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.
Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.
A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.
A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.
On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.
There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.
The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.
Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.
One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.
Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.
A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.
Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.
The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.
Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.
The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.
The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.
Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.
Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.
It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.
The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

The average amount retirees spend in retirement in Australia depends on their lifestyle and whether they are single or part of a couple. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) provides a widely used benchmark:
As of 2024, ASFA estimates:
Comfortable Retirement (per year):
• Single: Around $51,000
• Couple: Around $72,000
Modest Retirement (per year):
• Single: Around $34,000
• Couple: Around $49,000
These figures assume retirees own their home outright and are relatively healthy. A comfortable lifestyle includes things like private health insurance, regular leisure activities, some travel, and eating out. A modest lifestyle covers basic living costs but with less room for discretionary spending.
Total Spending Over Retirement
Assuming a 25-year retirement:
• Comfortable couple: ~$1.8 million
• Modest single: ~$850,000
Of course, individual spending varies based on health, housing, and personal choices.
Retirees in Australia spend most of their money on the essentials, with some variation depending on their lifestyle and health needs. According to ABS data and ASFA research, the main spending categories for retirees are:
1. Housing and Utilities
• Even if the home is owned outright, costs like council rates, home maintenance, and utilities (electricity, gas, water) are significant.
• Renters face higher ongoing housing costs.
2. Food and Groceries
• This remains a consistent expense, though many retirees adjust spending by cooking at home more often.
3. Health Care
• Includes private health insurance, out-of-pocket medical costs, pharmaceuticals, and dental care
• Health costs tend to increase with age.
4. Transport
• Includes car expenses, fuel, registration, and public transport
• Those in regional areas often rely more heavily on private vehicles.
• Many retirees allocate funds for domestic or international travel, hobbies, and dining out, especially early in retirement.
6. Insurance
• Health, home, car, and in some cases life insurance are ongoing costs.
Spending patterns typically decrease as retirees age, particularly after 75, when travel and discretionary spending reduce and health costs often rise.
At Find Retirement, we help clients to answer the important question as to how much money they need in retirement and whether or not they will be able to afford all of their future gaols.

In aged care, both RAD and DAP are ways of paying for accommodation, but they differ in how the cost is structured:
RAD – Refundable Accommodation Deposit
• A RAD is a lump sum payment made to an aged care provider when someone enters residential aged care.
• It is fully refundable when the resident leaves or passes away, minus any agreed-upon deductions.
• Think of it like an interest-free loan to the aged care home, which helps them fund infrastructure and services.
• A DAP is a daily fee calculated from the RAD amount using a government-set interest rate called the Maximum Permissible Interest Rate (MPIR).
• Instead of paying the RAD upfront, the resident can pay the equivalent cost over time as a non-refundable daily charge.
• This suits residents who prefer to keep their assets invested or don’t have access to large cash reserves.
• Residents can also choose a part RAD, part DAP arrangement.
Significant changes to RADs are set to commence on 1 November 2025 under the new Aged Care Act. From this date, aged care providers will be permitted to retain 2% per annum of the RAD as a daily rate, capped at five years, totaling a maximum of 10% retention . Additionally, the maximum accommodation price that providers can charge without prior approval has increased from $550,000 to $750,000, effective from 1 January 2025, with annual indexation to follow .
These reforms aim to enhance the sustainability and fairness of the aged care system, ensuring that providers can continue to offer quality care while maintaining financial viability.
