FEELING BUSY BUT STILL STUCK? It Might Not Be Your Planning

LEADERSHIP

You’ve done the planning. The list is written. The calendar looks full. And yet, somewhere between your second coffee and that thing you still haven’t replied to, you feel it - that low-level pressure that never quite switches off.

Not chaos. Not overwhelm. Just a constant sense of carrying too much in your head

When planning starts to feel heavy instead of helpful, the issue usually isn’t organisation or effort. It’s something quieter... unfinished decisions that keep taking up space, even when you’re being productive.

The small compromises we barely notice

Most people don’t get stuck because of one big, dramatic choice.

It starts with small compromises. Saying yes when you really meant “maybe”. Leaving a decision half-made because now isn’t the right time. Letting something slide because dealing with it feels like effort you don’t have today.

Each one feels reasonable in the moment. Life’s busy. You’ll come back to it.

Except you don’t. And those decisions don’t disappear.

What it actually looks like day to day

This is the part most people recognise straight away.

It’s Tuesday afternoon. You’re getting through what needs to be done, but there’s a quiet drag underneath it all. You keep circling back to the same thought - that email you haven’t sent, the conversation you keep rehearsing, the choice you know you need to make but haven’t quite faced.

Nothing’s technically “wrong”. But everything feels harder than it should.

That’s what unfinished decisions do. They sit in the background, quietly pulling on your attention.

When unfinished decisions pile up

These decisions don’t shout for attention. They linger.

They show up as conversations you replay, options you keep weighing up, tasks that never quite leave your mental to-do list. You don’t feel stuck - you feel flat, distracted, or oddly unmotivated, even when you’re doing all the “right” things.

Your energy isn’t low because you’re incapable. It’s low because your attention is split.

Why planning stops working

This is usually where people think, I just need a better system.

So they add another app, another planner, tighter routines, more structure. But it doesn’t really help.

Planning on top of unresolved decisions is like reorganising a cupboard without taking anything out first. You can shuffle things around, but it never feels clear.

And that’s when life starts to feel unnecessarily hard. More effort. Less clarity. More mental drain.

The shift that actually helps

Good planning doesn’t start with better tools.

It starts with fewer compromises.

When you reduce the number of halfmade decisions in your life - the “I’ll deal with that later” ones - everything changes. Your head feels quieter. Your plans feel more realistic. Taking action feels right, not heavy.

This isn’t about being decisive all the time. It’s about closing loops instead of letting them sit there quietly draining you.

The real payoff

The thing that’s exhausting you isn’t your workload.

It’s the decisions you’re carrying but haven’t finished.

Not the big, dramatic ones - just the small, ordinary choices you keep meaning to come back to, quietly taking up more space than they deserve.

Once those are dealt with (either made, parked properly, or let go) planning starts to work again. Not because life is easier, but because you’re no longer dragging unfinished business behind you.

If you’ve been feeling busy but oddly stuck, that’s the place to look first.

If this is something you want to dig into more - especially if you’re someone who’s capable, organised, and used to handling things - you might also enjoy

Want More Money, More Time Or Less Stress?

We believe our clients all deserve the three freedoms: Financial Freedom; Time Freedom; and Mind Freedom. In other words, more money and time to spend on important things outside of their business, along with less stress. Is your business stifling your freedom?

Being in business is tough. At times, you might be worried about whether you’ll have enough cash in the bank to pay your team and suppliers. Perhaps you’re working 80-hours a week just to stay on top of things. Or, maybe the stress of daily business life is impacting how you turn up at home.

What would Financial Freedom look like for you?

This is about having enough cash in the bank - both in your business’s bank account and in your personal bank account - to do the things that will enrich your life. That could be buying new assets for the business or your family, having an amazing team Christmas party, or taking your family on a much-needed holiday.

We can help you achieve the cash levels you need for your desired lifestyle.

How would having Time Freedom impact your life?

As a business owner, do you feel like you need to be the first to arrive, the last to leave and even take work home with you? You could be too busy working in the business to spend time working on your business strategy. It’s also highly likely that there’s little time left for friends and family, let alone yourself.

We can help you achieve balance so that you are not only less stressed in your home life, but more effective when you’re working in your business.

What is Mind Freedom?

Mind freedom is being able to sleep soundly at night. It’s not burning yourself out before taking that much needed holiday, and it’s not getting sick the moment your holiday starts.

Attaining financial and time freedom can be the first step to achieving mind freedom. More money in the bank and more time outside your business generally leads to better perspective and less stress.

We believe it’s not only our duty to help our clients meet their taxation obligations, it’s our duty to help them achieve Financial, Time and Mind Freedom. Contact us for more information on how we can help you grow your freedom.

Drawings vs Owner Contributions vs Owner’s Equity

How they differ, how to reconcile them, and best practice in Xero

When business owners move money in and out of their business, confusion often arises around Drawings, Owner Contributions, and Owner’s Equity In accounting software like Xero, understanding the difference between these concepts is essential for clean reconciliations, accurate reports, and stress-free BAS and year-end work.

This article explains:

• What each term actually means

• How to reconcile them correctly

• Best practice for keeping things tidy and audit-ready

1. What is Owner’s Equity?

Owner’s Equity is the overall value of the owner’s interest in the business

In simple terms:

Owner’s Equity = Assets – Liabilities

It is not a transaction account you usually post to day-to-day. Instead, it is a section of the Balance Sheet that includes things like:

• Capital introduced

• Retained profits or losses

• Drawings taken by the owner

Key point:

Owner’s Equity is the result, not the process.

2. What are Owner Contributions (Capital Introduced)?

Owner Contributions (also called Capital Introduced) are amounts the owner puts into the business for business use.

Examples:

• Owner transfers personal cash into the business bank account

• Owner pays a business expense from their personal account

• Initial funds used to start the business

These transactions increase Owner’s Equity.

How Owner Contributions should be recorded

Best practice:

• Allocate these transactions to an Equity account such as:

- “Owner Contributions”

- “Capital Introduced”

- “Shareholder Funds” (for companies)

Common mistake:

Coding owner contributions to “Other Income” - this inflates profit and causes tax issues.

3. What are Drawings?

Drawings are amounts the owner takes out of the business for personal use.

Examples:

• Owner transfers money from the business bank account to their personal account

• Owner pays a personal expense using the business debit card

These transactions reduce Owner’s Equity

How Drawings should be recorded

Best practice:

• Allocate to a dedicated Drawings account under Equity

• Keep drawings separate from business expenses

Important:

Drawings are not tax-deductible expenses.

4. How these accounts work together

Think of it like a running balance:

• Owner Contributions increase equity

• Business profit increases equity

• Drawings decrease equity

All three ultimately roll up into Owner’s Equity on the Balance Sheet.

You usually won’t reconcile directly to “Owner’s Equity” - instead, you reconcile to:

• Owner Contributions

• Drawings

• (Sometimes) Share Capital or Loan Accounts

5. Sole traders vs companies (important distinction)

Sole Traders

• Drawings are common and expected

• Owner does not receive wages

• Profit belongs to the owner regardless of drawings

Companies

• Owners are usually paid via: - Wages - Dividends - Loans (Director’s Loan Account)

In companies:

• Drawings should generally be avoided

• Use a Director’s Loan Account instead

6. Best practice for clean records

Reconcile regularly

Leaving drawings unreconciled leads to:

• Messy year-end adjustments

• Confusion about how much the owner has taken

Talk to your accountant early

Especially if:

• The business is growing

• There are frequent owner transactions

• You’re moving from sole trader to company

7. Why this matters

Incorrect treatment of drawings and contributions can lead to:

• Overstated profit

• Incorrect tax reporting

• Confusing equity balances

• Extra accounting fees at year-end

Getting it right keeps:

• Your Balance Sheet accurate

• Your accountant happy

• Your stress levels low

Final takeaway

• Owner Contributions = money in Equity

• Drawings = money out Equity

• Owner’s Equity = the net result on the Balance Sheet

Treat owner transactions as equity movements, not income or expenses, and your reconciliations will stay clean, compliant, and easy to understand.

Future-ready Not-for-Profits: 2026 Digital Marketing Trends

In the everyday hustle of running a not-for-profit, it’s easy to look back and think, “We should’ve….” - should’ve had clearer messaging, should’ve reached more volunteers online, should’ve had stronger donor engagement. In Victoria and beyond, many foundations and charities have poured passion into their causes, only to struggle with limited budgets, fragmented communication channels, or outdated digital approaches. Those frustrations are very real - but 2026 brings a fresh wave of tools and trends that can help NFPs work smarter, not harder.

Let’s take a quick look at how digital marketing challenges of the pastsuch as low engagement, weak donor targeting, and unclear online impact - can be transformed this year through purpose - driven digital strategies. Then we’ll explore the top trends shaping the future of digital engagement for not-for-profits.

Turning Old Challenges into New Opportunities

Traditionally, many not-for-profits relied on print newsletters, events, or basic social posts to connect with supporters. These efforts often lacked data insights, and it was tough to track who was actually engaging or why donations fluctuated. But now:

• Data is no longer just for big businesses. With affordable analytics and simple dashboards, small teams can now understand supporter behaviour and tailor outreach.

• Storytelling can be more dynamic. Short videos and community-led content let real voices — beneficiaries, volunteers, supporters — share impact in compelling ways.

• Automation isn’t intimidating; it’s a way to do more with less, nurturing relationships without burning out your team.

Now let’s dive into the key digital trends that NFPs should consider in 2026.

1.

Short, emotional videos on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are exploding in popularity and engagement. These 15–60 second clips can showcase impact stories, volunteer moments, or donation journeys in a way that text alone simply can’t.

Benefits for NFPs:

• Boosts awareness with minimal production costs

• Makes complex missions relatable and human

• Encourages sharing and organic reach

Financial Responsibility: Use free editing tools (like CapCut), and prioritise authenticity over polished production - this keeps costs low while maximising engagement.

2. Predictive Analytics & Donor Targeting (Smarter Fundraising)

AI-powered predictive analytics lets you look ahead at donor behaviour - who is likely to give again, who needs a tailored ask, and when people are most receptive.

Benefits for NFPs:

• Better targeting increases donation ROI

• Supports personalised campaigns that feel meaningful

• Helps you allocate time and funds where they count

Financial Responsibility: Though analytics tools can cost money, start with simpler CRM systems or donor platforms with built-in analytics to avoid overspending on complex systems upfront.

3. Privacy-First Data Strategy (Trust Builds Support)

By 2026,digital privacy will be non-negotiable - audiences want transparency about how their data is used and protected.

Benefits for NFPs:

• Strengthens supporter trust and loyalty

• Reduces risk of data misuse or compliance issues

• Encourages people to share information willingly when they feel valued

Financial Responsibility: Invest in privacy- aware tools and clear consent practices. It may have upfront costs, but it avoids expensive legal or reputational issues down the line.

4. AI-Enhanced Content & Automation (Efficiency With Heart)

AI tools can help NFPs generate content ideas, personalise emails, and automate social posting - freeing time for mission-focused work.

Benefits for NFPs:

• Reduces writing and scheduling workload

• Improves the relevance of messages for different supporter segments

• Helps maintain consistent communication without expanding staff

Financial Responsibility: Choose tools that fit your budget and strategy. Avoid over- automation — the personal touch still matters most to supporters.

5. Community-First Engagement (Belonging Over Broadcast)

Audiences today want connection, not broadcasts. Shifting toward community groups (Facebook Groups, newsletters, Instagram DMs) encourages two -way dialogue and deeper loyalty.

Benefits for NFPs:

• Encourages repeat engagement from volunteers and donors

• Builds peer-to -peer advocacy and storytelling

• Creates micro - communities of passionate supporters

Financial Responsibility: Community building is low- cost but high- attention - plan regular content and volunteer moderators to sustain energy.

A Call to Action: Your Digital Future Starts Today

Victoria’s not-for-profits are spearheading incredible change - and digital marketing doesn’t have to be a barrier. Think of these trends as tools in your advocate’s toolkit: not flashy gimmicks, but bridges to deeper connections, smarter fundraising, and greater impact. Start small, experiment boldly, and always lead with your mission.

Your story deserves to be seen. Your supporters deserve to be heard. And 2026 is the year your digital strategy brings it all together

How to Paint metal surfaces

If you have metal garden furniture, aluminium window and door frames or an outdoor shed, cooler temperatures are a good time to paint them.

Like all painting, preparation is the key to success. Here are a few handy tips for getting the best appearance and protection for the metal surfaces around the home or office.

1. Clean the metal surface

Using sandpaper or another gentle scraping tool, remove all dust, dirt, debris and grease. A mild detergent should be sufficient but for more persistent deposits, mineral spirits will do the trick. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and leave to dry thoroughly. Don’t use water as it doesn’t clean metal effectively.

2. Get rid of peeling or loose paint

This applies to preparing all surfaces for painting – get rid of old paint that is loose or peeling. Otherwise, the new paint won’t stick. Use a hand wire brush, a scraper or sandpaper and gently sand back. Too much pressure and the metal surface may be gouged, leading to an uneven finish.

Some people like to use power tools for this part of the cleaning process but beware – this method may end up polishing the metal surface, leaving nothing for the new paint to adhere to. You will need to rub a scuffing pad along the metal surface; the pads will lightly scratch the surface, allowing the primer to stick.

3. Remove the rust

Rust is a sign that the metal is not totally sound. You may need to replace the roof or frames if there is structural damage. If there is rust in just a few places, apply a high-quality primer with rust-inhibiting properties by brushing or sanding. Painting over rust will damage the metal paint by causing it to rust as well.

4. Use the appropriate primer

Check that the primer you choose is compatible with the paint you’ve selected. Follow the instructions on the label as different primers have differing drying times.

Water-based primers are not appropriate for metal surfaces but there are many other options. Rust-inhibiter primers, iron oxide primers and galvanised primers are more suitable, depending on what you are painting.

Apply the primer immediately after the previous surface preparation. This will help prevent flash rusting or dust accumulating. If what you are painting is outdoors (for example, roofs, furniture or sheds), a second coat of primer will add an extra layer of protection against oxidisation.

5. Paint the surface

Metal paints come in oil-based and water-based brush-on or spray-can versions. Oil-based paint is trickier to work with but the results are last longer. Waterbased acrylic paints can be easier to apply but may be difficult to find in spray form for exterior use.

The easiest way to paint metal surfaces is with spray paint. (However, though it’s faster and easier, it doesn’t create as firm a finish.) If you decide to spray paint, hold the can 15 to 30 centimetres away from the metal surface – this prevents the paint from pooling. Using a long sweeping motion, spray whatever it is you want to paint. (Don’t be tempted to hold the can in one place.) If you notice excessive dripping, wipe everything clean and

6.

Work safely

Whenever you are painting metal surfaces, make sure you protect yourself. Wear a dust mask or respirator, protective goggles and gloves. Work in a well ventilated area – outdoors if possible. If you use power tools (for instance, when getting rid of rust), insert quality ear plugs to protect your hearing.

Peace of Mind When Travelling

If you’re like me, you probably take herbs and supplements regularly, if not daily. When it’s time to go on a holiday, it can be difficult to choose what to take. Do I take them all? Do I leave them all at home, or something in between?

When I travel, I want to be ready for common issues that might happen outside, like injuries, bites, and stings. I also want to prepare for specific illnesses, such as travel sickness and stomach bugs. Additionally, I want to be prepared for more typical problems like headaches, nausea, and colds or flu.

Usually, I just take my homeopathic first-aid kit; it is a kit of 20 remedies that have multiple actions, meaning they are helpful for more than one ailment. This kit has remedies to improve travel sickness, injuries, bites/stings, digestive issues, colds/flu and so much more. The instructions are very easy to follow, allowing you to select the best remedy based on your symptoms.

I also have a smaller travel homeopathic kit with just 7 remedies, which still covers a wide range of ailments. I formulated it

specifically thinking about what health issues may crop up when travelling or on holidays.

Homeopathy is a gentle system of medicine that originated in Germany, and gently stimulates your body to heal, but just because it’s gentle, it doesn’t mean it’s not powerful! On multiple occasions, I have seen injuries that were in the early stages of very severe bruising, turn to almost nothing after a few doses of homeopathic arnica.

I also have many patients who use homeopathy for mental and emotional issues, and tell me that it has changed their lives.

The selection of a remedy is based on the presenting symptoms, and the nuances between the symptoms will determine the best choice. You will know you have selected the correct remedy if the symptoms start to reduce. If there has been no change at all after a few hours, you can go back to the instructions and try a different remedy.

Homeopathy is decreasing in popularity in the Western world, not because it is ineffective, but because it is cheap to make and can’t be patented. This means that no one can make their fortune off of it, which leads to very little money

available for research and promotion. However, homeopathy is thriving in India, a country where the government doesn’t have the money to subsidise expensive medications, and is looking for a safe, cheap and effective option. Many medical doctors in India treat only with homeopathy and there are homeopathic hospitals set up to treat people with this modality.

If you’ve never tried homeopathy before, I would recommend starting with something like arnica, which is used for bruising, and once you’ve seen the results, there’s no turning back!

If you’re interested in purchasing a homeopathic first aid kit, you can do so here or send me an email.

Getting connected with your mates and community can have a massive impact on your wellbeing, hey? Whether it’s having a quick yarn with a neighbour, catching up with a friend, or joining a local group, social connections help us feel supported, valued, and not so lonely. This week, we’re having a look at some simple ways to strengthen those community ties.

Social connections are more than just socialising— they support mental and physical health, reduce stress, and can even improve longevity. Having people to rely on, talk to, or share experiences with makes everyday challenges easier to manage.

• Join a local community club, hobby group, or class.

• Attend local events or workshops to meet new people.

• Reach out to a neighbour or friend for a coffee or chat.

72-year-old local resident, Jane, started going to a weekly knitting group. It wasn’t long before she was learning new tricks and making some great mates for life. It really put a spring in her step every week and gave her a solid sense of belonging in her community. Building connections doesn’t have to be a big drama. Even the smallest gestures-like saying ‘G’day’ to a neighbour or rocking up to a group activity-can make a big difference to your wellbeing and sense of community.

Wellbeing Tip of the Week:

Reach out to someone new or attend one community activity this week. Notice how a simple connection can make you feel more supported and uplifted.

Community members are encouraged to support local traders and bring their lunch to enjoy while relaxing on the lawns, with live music and free summer-themed sweet treats.Lunch on the Lawns - Summer Series will be held every Thursday in February from 12 noon to 2.00 pm, with everyone welcome.

The revitalisation of Central Geelong has been a key priority of mine, and one of the themes identified in last year’s forums has been the need for activation of what we already have.

Following the overwhelming success of the Geelong City Market, I want to do something on weekdays, which is why we are activating our lawns on Thursdays in February.

It’s going to be amazing to see workers from the surrounding buildings and the broader community come together and enjoy some live music and summer treats while supporting local businesses and musical talent.

“I’m looking forward to bringing the summer vibes to the Wurriki Nyal lawns and seeing the community coming together in Central Geelong.

This is a great thing for Central Geelong, and I hope everyone gets behind it.”

City responds to Geelong Australia Day Committee and the Lions Club of Corio Bay’s decision to cancel Free Children’s Fun Day

In response to the news that the Geelong Australia Day Committee and the Lions Club of Corio Bay have made the difficult decision to cancel the Free Children’s Fun Day on Australia Day, the City of Greater Geelong is working with the Royal Geelong Yacht Club to support an expanded Festival of Sails program at Steampacket Gardens.

The expanded program will include free family-friendly Australia Day activities.

Sports and Recreation portfolio chair Councillor Eddy Kontelj:

Despite this year’s event not proceeding, I will continue to encourage and support Council to actively liaise and engage with the Geelong Australia Day Committee regarding 2027.

I have long been a strong advocate for the celebration of Australia Day, and while the usual Rippleside event won’t be going ahead, I’m pleased the City can support Festival of Sails to enhance their already significant program for the community.

Australia Day on our glorious waterfront is always a great day, and this year will be even better, so save the date.

Councillor Melissa Cadwell

Australia Day is a very important day, and fundamentally, it’s about recognising that we are privileged to live in the greatest country in the world.

That is worth celebrating, so City officers have been working closely with Festival of Sails organisers to ensure the community can continue to enjoy family-fun activities on the day, in the region.

I want to thank the organising committee of the Rippleside Park event for their service to the community over many years, but also for making the call that the event was going to be too challenging to deliver this year.

While it’s disappointing this year’s event could not go ahead, we will continue to liaise with the Geelong Australia Day Committee for 2027.

We look forward to supporting Festival of Sails as they finalise details of the additional activities planned for Australia Day as part of their 2026 program.

Discussions will continue following Australia Day about whether the event will return in 2027 and in what form.

Joint research into potential new bollard material to be funded in 2025-26 Clean Economy grants

Council has voted to award $25,000 in funding to Godfrey Hirst and Deakin University to support a joint research project.

The project will determine if there is a viable alternative use for carpet manufacturing waste in large-scale 3D printing.

The concept involves taking carpet manufacturing waste, which typically goes to landfill, and recycling it by converting it into feeder stock for recycled 3D printing (also called additive manufacturing, LFAM – Large Format Additive Manufacturing).

If successful, it could divert hundreds of tonnes of waste and landfill into a viable and sustainable product with potential uses across many applications including the redevelopment of the iconic Baywalk and Barwon Heads Bollards.

Many of the 159 bollards were originally made from recycled wood re-purposed from historical pier timbers. After 30 years of additional prolonged exposure to coastal conditions, these historical wood timbers are close to the end of their expected life due to natural factors such as fungal infections, pests, and rot.

If the prototype currently in development is successful, it is possible that the decaying wooden bollards might be replaced with 3D printed bollards made of stronger, more durable, and lighter material.

Using recycled carpet waste for the next phase of the bollards builds on the original vision of repurposing materials and reflects another part of the City’s manufacturing history.

Exploring ways to keep synthetic materials out of landfills contributes to the City and community’s commitment to circular economy and waste reduction.

At the same time, the use of modern composite materials can prolong the lifespan of the bollards and reduce maintenance requirements.

The project is a partnership between the City of Greater Geelong, Deakin University, the Advanced Fibre Cluster, and Godfrey Hirst.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

“We’ve been working very hard behind the scenes to get the next phase of the bollards up and going, and exploring innovative technology while we do it.

This project ticks a lot of boxes for us - it reflects our city’s rich history in manufacturing, it highlights where we are today in advanced manufacturing, and it contributes to the circular economy, and potentially reduces waste and landfill while preserving the legacy of our bollards that the community loves.

I will be following this research very closely, and I’m optimistic that this will provide exciting opportunities for local industry and create a viable future for the bollards for generations to come.”

AFCG chief executive David Buchanan:

“The Advanced Fibre Cluster Geelong is proud to support this iconic bollard project—working alongside our members to develop a durable, renewable solution that’s built for Geelong and designed to last.”

Godfrey Hirst Manufacturing Manager Aaron Dawson:

“This research project represents a practical step forward in addressing one of the biggest challenges facing manufacturing today—how to keep valuable materials in use for longer.

Exploring the potential to transform carpet manufacturing waste into durable, large-scale 3D printed products aligns strongly with our commitment to waste reduction and circular economy principles.

We’re proud to collaborate locally in Geelong on a project that could deliver real environmental benefits while creating innovative, long-lasting infrastructure for the community.”

Hundreds proudly become Aussie citizens

Four hundred community members have become Australian citizens and publicly pledged their commitment to Australia in front of friends and family.

Two ceremonies were held at the Norlane ARC Auditorium on Australia Day yesterday, which some community members may refer to as 26 January in reflection of their values. The City takes care to acknowledge Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and all First Peoples in Geelong at this event.

The emotional ceremonies were presided over by Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM and Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson. Councillors Andrew Katos, Eddy Kontelj and Rowan Story AM, RFD, along with Member for Corangamite Libby Coker MP, also attended to support the conferees.

The new citizens hail from 40 different countries, including Afghanistan, China, India, Germany, Nepal, Pakistan, the UK and the USA.

This year, we plan on holding eight to nine citizenship ceremonies in total, on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs. In 2025, we held 20 citizenship ceremonies and conferred citizenship upon 1,175 community members.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

“I love watching the conferees’ reactions as they take the pledge and are declared citizens, and as they receive their citizenship certificates

These ceremonies are so special and hold a lot of meaning for conferees.

Choosing to become an Australian citizen is a very important expression of commitment to being part of our region and Australia.”

Community encouraged to apply for arts development grants

Local artists and creatives interested in building their skills can now apply for an Artists & Creatives Professional Development Grant.

Applications are now open and close 5.00 pm on 16 February 2026, with notifications to be sent on 2 April.

Last year 10 local applicants were awarded grants for activities such as workshops, structured mentoring and an artist residency.

Individuals can apply for costs including travel, accommodation or registration fees for training, workshops, conferences or other development opportunities.

Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson:

“Nearly 18 per cent of our total population?in the region was born overseas and it is wonderful to see our rich and vibrant multicultural community continue to grow and contribute.

Congratulations to our 400 new citizens who have affirmed their commitment to Australia and its people, the values we share and our common future.”

As of 31 December 2025, more than 25,450 people from over 160 countries have been invited to attend one of more than 425 citizenship ceremonies hosted by local government councils and other organisations nationally as part of their Australia Day events program.

Of these, more than 18,800 people from over 150 countries have been invited to become citizens on Australia Day at one of more than 325 ceremonies.

Visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au/ citizenship to find out more about our citizenship ceremonies.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“As a UNESCO City of Design, Greater Geelong is a region that values our creative industries.

The talent among our local creatives is impressive, so it’s exciting to be able to provide support for career growth and development.”

Arts and Culture, Hospitality and Live Entertainment portfolio chair Councillor Eddy Kontelj

“These grants support the creative talent that makes Greater Geelong such a vibrant place.

If you want to grow your creative career, now is the time to apply.”

Young leaders unveiled for this year’s Youth Council

Eleven people aged 13-17 were formally inducted into the 2026 Youth Council at a City Hall ceremony this week.

Councillors, family and friends watched on as the group elected Vignesh Ram, 15, to lead the Youth Council as Junior Mayor and Bailey Roberts, 14, as Deputy Junior Mayor.

Members have already taken part in a three-day orientation, led by the City and in partnership with Youth Leadership Academy Australia.

During this period, they created a new charter, developed key priority areas and decided on a project to focus on throughout the year. Their key priorities are:

• Protecting native land skies and waterways

• Youth Health & Wellbeing

• Economic Equality and Opportunity

• Inclusivity & Safety within the community

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

Members should feel very proud of this achievement, as they faced stiff competition to get to this point.

They were selected from a pool of 26 candidates and nearly 2,100 votes from their peers across 17 local schools.

Council is excited to work alongside this important advisory committee and hear directly from young people about what matters to them.

Over the next 11 months, the group will meet monthly to consider matters affecting young people. At the conclusion of their term, they will present advice and recommendations to Council on ways to enhance the experience of growing up in Greater Geelong.

“I’m confident these individuals will make a difference in the community and use their new knowledge and skills in all aspects of their lives.

Junior Mayor Vignesh Ram:

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent young people across Greater Geelong.

Our Youth Council is excited to learn, collaborate and advocate on issues that matter to us, and we’re looking forward to making a positive difference together.

FEBRUARY 2026 EDITION

Championing Stories, Skills and Geelong’s Screen Industry

At the heart of Geelong’s growing screen industry is the Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation, a not-forprofit, volunteer led organisation championing a sustainable film and screen production sector in the region. Grant funding is a core part of what they do to support filmmakers to develop and produce work in the region.

Geelong Waterfront Film also contributes by actively supporting the ecosystem around screen production. This includes developing local skills, connecting creatives and industry professionals through regular Friends of Geelong Waterfront Film Meet Ups and an extensive database. Creating opportunities for work to be shown, stories celebrated and promoting the region as an unequalled filming destination.

The REEL Film Festival

During March – April, 2026 Geelong Waterfront Film is hosting the REEL Film Festival, a multi-event celebration of screen culture that brings industry professionals, creators and audiences together through education, inspiration and entertainment.

The Signature Event: 48 Hour Film Frenzy

At the heart of the festival is the much anticipated 48 Hour Film Frenzy Shoot Out, a high-energy, real-time filmmaking challenge. Taking place from 27-29th March, crews have just 48 hours to write, shoot, edit and submit a 4–7 minute short film.

Filmmakers are given three surprise elements - a location, a line of dialogue and a prop - revealed on the Friday night, ensuring creativity unfolds in real time. Open to all ages and abilities, films can be shot on a phone or professional camera, with awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Acting and Best Script. All eligible films are screened at The Pivotonian and/or the Multi Arts Centre in Torquay.

Indian Cinema Comes to Geelong

Geelong Waterfront Film PRESENTS

The Foundation is delighted to partner with the National Indian Film Festival Australia (NIFFA), proudly bringing the festival to Geelong for the very first time. This exciting addition celebrates Indian cinema from regional and independent voices to mainstream icons through public screenings at Readings Cinema on 20th – 22nd March. There will also be a night of Indian comedy, and Bollywood Dancing. Insightful Q&A sessions will explore co-productions, investment, distribution and development, broadening cultural reach and global connections.

Learning from the Best

The REEL Film Festival features a varied program of workshops and panel discussions, designed to demystify the screen industry and offer practical, real world insights across film, television, digital content and emerging technologies.

Headlining the festival’s panel program on 3rd March, is a flagship discussion exploring how creative thinking, modern technology and purpose-driven storytelling can take local ideas to global screens.

OF THE MONTH

With Hugh Nairn as MC, this dynamic panel brings together three outstanding industry professionals:

Clayton Jacobson, an award-winning Producer, Director, Writer and Actor best known for Kenny and Brothers’ Nest. Clayton shares how innovative storytelling and clever production approaches can rewrite the rules of independent filmmaking. He also brings deep insight into virtual production, having founded Dreamscreen Australia, Australia’s first end-to-end virtual production facility, servicing major productions including The Clearing, Love Me, High Country and La Brea.

Ella Bourne, Australian filmmaker and environmental storyteller, takes audiences from Torquay to Los Angeles with her globally recognised work. Director of Awoke and Great Ocean Love, Ella blends cinematic storytelling with environmental advocacy and strong female perspectives.

Jarrah Gurrie, editor for global music icons including Madonna, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez, brings a unique perspective from the world of high profile music videos and award-winning short films screened at Sundance. Jarrah’s discussion opens the door to understanding visual storytelling beyond traditional film, highlighting the crossover between music, digital content and cinematic narrative.

Together, the panel offers a compelling look at how today’s screen creators build sustainable, globally connected careers across multiple platforms.

The festival line up also features Julie Peters, whose extraordinary and unplanned 52-year career spans more than 30 roles across Australian television and radio. Other topics include Eco Filmmaking, Film Distribution, and how to shape award winning scripts. Screen Careers will run a workshop on “Breaking in, Standing Out: Navigating Careers in Screen.”

Creatives will also benefit from a workshop led by digital specialists Enterprise Monkey, exploring how the latest technology is reshaping content creation and creative workflows.

Actors are not forgotten, with thought-provoking panel discussions focused on performance, auditions, career development and navigating the evolving screen landscape.

Community, Celebration and Screenings

Beyond education, the REEL Film Festival continues to embrace fun and community connection. A lively Movie Trivia Night, hosted by the Questionable Company, invites film lovers to test their knowledge while raising funds for the Foundation in a high energy, laughter filled evening.

The community is also invited to attend local film screenings at The Pivotonian Cinema, showcasing films shot across the region followed by engaging Q&A sessions with the creative teams behind the work.

The Geelong Waterfront Film Foundation continues to play a vital role in strengthening the region’s creative community by championing a sustainable film and screen production sector in the region.

Healthy Minds and Nature

How do we maintain a Healthy Mindset, particularly when things become stressful?

I recently heard a Mental Health expert suggest that the single most helpful practice for maintaining a Healthy Mindset was to be in the outdoors, spending time in nature –exercising, playing, relaxing or working.

January is possibly my favourite month because of summer, warmer weather, school holidays and cricket. My wife and I love the walks around so many picturesque parts of the Bellarine. We are so lucky down here – there are so many attractive and stimulating options. Some very healthy things happen to our minds and bodies when we exercise outdoors.

Here are some of the benefits:

• Endorphins and Dopamine are released into our brains that lift our moods

• Unwanted chemicals are expelled

• We receive a Vitamin D intake

• We burn off calories

• Our senses are stimulated, and an appreciation of nature is enhanced

• Our heart rate increases, and we breathe in fresh air that refreshes our brains

• We experience a mind shift – like a recalibration

• Improved sleep patterns result

One parent I spoke with was celebrating the Family Project in their backyard that her child was happily involved in. She explained that her child was stimulated and entertained for some hours while they worked together as a family on clearing and cutting up some unwanted plants.

Another benefit of the above is that if we do this with our children or partners, we can create opportunities for important connections and conversation.

A further spin-off is that it has the potential to counteract the overuse of Screen Time. Many families struggle with issues around gaming and the misuse of media. It’s not always easy to maintain the necessary limits in this area, so if healthy alternatives can be fostered, the issues around the mistreatment of these devices can be managed a little more easily. Some suggestions that may be helpful:

• Have a family outing to a spot around the area for a walk or other activity

• Go to a park to kick or throw a ball

• Ride the bikes together

• Walk the dog near or far

• Develop a family project – plant a garden or clean up the backyard together

• Go to the beach or hit the surf

• Go fishing

• Have a picnic in the backyard

All the best everyone. Stay positive. I hope the holidays are going well. Rob Hunter LPS Chaplain Robert.Hunter@education.vic.gov.au

‘PAWS FOR GAWS’ CHARITY DOG WALK RETURNS TO SUPPORT VULNERABLE ANIMALS

Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is thrilled to announce the launch of the 2026 PAWS for GAWS Charity Dog Walk; a fun, community event in support of vulnerable animals.

Taking place on Sunday 1 March 2026, the event invites dog lovers and community members of all ages to join a relaxed 4km walk along the picturesque Geelong Waterfront, starting and finishing at the Eastern Park BBQ area in East Geelong, followed by festivities at the event hub.

GAWS CEO Helen Cocks said community support of events like PAWS for GAWS makes a meaningful difference to the lives of lost, surrendered and stray animals in the Geelong region.

“As a community, when we walk together for a cause we all care deeply about, the impact goes far beyond one beautiful day,” Ms Cocks said. “PAWS for GAWS is not just about dogs on leashes - it’s about the thousands of animals in need of care, shelter and a second chance.”

“The support we receive through this charity dog walk directly translates into care, medical treatment and brighter futures for the animals in our shelter. We are deeply grateful for our community.”

Participants are welcome to join with their dogs or simply walk alongside GAWS in support. Along with the scenic waterfront stroll, the day will feature:

• Post-walk festivities, entertainment and activities for families and dogs

• A lively event hub with food, coffee and community stalls

• Merchandise

• Pooch Parade – Categories: best dressed, waggiest tail and best trick

• Prizes and giveaways

All funds raised through PAWS for GAWS go directly toward supporting GAWS’ vital work: providing shelter, care, veterinary support and rehabilitation for homeless, abandoned and surrendered animals. GAWS’ shelter is a not-for-profit organisation and relies entirely on the generosity of the community to continue its mission.

Last financial year, more than 3100 animals arrived at GAWS needing care. It costs GAWS more than $65 a day to provide care for one animal.

Registrations are now open and all registrants receive a PAWS for GAWS branded dog bandana and bumper sticker.

We warmly thank everyone involved for their ongoing commitment and look forward to welcoming you through the gates on show day to experience country life at its best.

BIKES and SCOOTERS

Bikes and E Scooters are often easy targets over the summer holiday period, particularly in our beachside towns.

Whether you are just running into a mate’s place, at home, at the shops, in the caravan park or at holiday homes, remember to secure your bikes and e scooters to prevent their theft.

• Use a good quality D or U lock

• Lock it to a fixed, immoveable object that can’t be broken or moved

• Lock the frame and wheels to the parking infrastructure with one or more locks, especially if your wheels have quick release mechanisms.

• Whenever possible, keep your bike inside your home or in a locked shed or garage,

• Engrave the letter “V” and your drivers’ licence number (or another unique identifier) on the frame, apply data dots or attach GPS trackers.

• Take photos of your bike, including identifying features, marks and accessories

• Register your bike on BikeVAULT – a free service, supported by Neighbourhood Watch Victoria. You can record your bike’s make, model, colour and serial number and even upload photos of it. Take a look - https://www.propertyvault. com.au/bikevault/

ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BIKE, even if it’s parked in your garage, your carport or on your balcony or if you’re only leaving it unattended for a short period.

LOCK YOUR CARS

Sadly, opportunists are out there checking cars for valuables left in unlocked cars. Ensure it’s not your car they find unlocked. And most recently, residents in Lovely Banks, Corio, Lara, and Waurn Ponds were the unfortunate targets.

Continue to be vigilant and lock your vehicles whenever unattended and take everything of value with you.

We are all busy juggling work, kids on school holidays, shopping, home and everything else that is life.

And all too often we get a bit careless and leave the laptop in the car ready for tomorrow, or forget to bring the handbag or backpack inside.

Whether you are spending a day at the beach, running into the supermarket or to pay for fuel – LOCK YOUR CAR!!

Let’s keep our neighbourhoods safe! #Lockyourcars

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

SPECIAL EVENTS ARE SO MUCH FUN!

A range of open day competitions hosted by other centres are offered to athletes aside from their own centre’s Saturday morning competition. During winter, Corio athletes competed in a cross-country open day held at the You Yangs and hosted by Werribee.

So far this summer, athletes have been to Werribee for a relay open day, and to Ballarat, Horsham, Swan Hill and Whittlesea for track and field events.

Region and State level events are only for U9-17 athletes, so open days are great opportunities for younger athletes to have the experience of competing with other centres.

Athletes have loads of fun making friends, who they will likely meet up with at other events in the future. Quite often, longstanding friendships are made, and athletes enjoy catching up.

Noah and Billie have been to several open days together.

“I love open days because I make new friends and get to see how good I am against other boys my age” (Noah)

“It’s so much fun going away with my family, I get to make new friends, and I love winning medals.”(Billie)

The Swan Hill open day is called the “Battle of the Borders” with centres from Victoria, NSW and South Australia competing.

This season, 30 centres participated, and a “Team Corio” of 8 athletes did amazingly well, bringing home 30 medals, setting 7 Swan Hill records and 1 Corio “Out of Centre” record.

2 athletes won their 100m and qualified to compete in the Junior Swan Hill Gift, with one placing second. This open day also included a “Best Centre” award, with Corio placing second.

Swan Hill runs on grass, which was a novel experience as well.

Each January, Little Athletics Victoria hosts the State Combined Events Championships. This event is similar to a heptathlon, where athletes compete in a set combination of events and points are scored, accumulating an aggregate score. These championships have no pre-qualifying requirements, so all U9-17 athletes can enjoy the experience of competing at the State level.

There are still a number of special events to come this summer, including the Western Metro Region Track & Field Carnival being hosted at home by Corio this season.

Join Kathy Lette - beloved humourist and author of the Australian classic Puberty Blues - as she returns to Geelong with another riotously entertaining tale.

Full of laugh-out-loud humour and flashes of devastating pathos, Kathy Lette’s The Sisterhood Rules is a romp through secrets, scandal and the unbreakable – if occasionally exasperatedbonds of sisterhood.

Twin sisters Isabel and Verity have always been inseparable – until Verity has an affair with Izzy’s husband, leaving them hopelessly estranged. But when their mother goes missing, Verity and Izzy are forced to reunite to find her. From there, the problems only get bigger: their mother has a new younger lover and where there’s a will … he’d clearly like to be in it. Australian Eagles 50 Years Of Hotel California

An unmissable tribute to one of the greatest albums in rock history!

Fifty years on, Hotel California remains a cornerstone of classic rock - an iconic album that defined a generation and cemented the Eagles as rock legends. In 2026, The Australian Eagles Show, Australia’s premier tribute to the Eagles’ unforgettable sound, honours the milestone live in concert.

The show’s first set will see the band performing the Hotel California album in its entirety, followed by the second set of all the other Eagles classic hits.

Renowned for their pitch-perfect harmonies and masterful musicianship, The Australian Eagles Show is fronted by the supremely talented Michael Thompson and Shayne Browne. Backed by a powerhouse five-piece band, the show brings to life the legendary sounds that have captivated audiences for five decades.

Audiences can expect faithful recreations of timeless classics like ‘Desperado’, ‘New Kid in Town’, ‘Life in the Fast Lane’, and, of course, the Grammy-winning epic ‘Hotel California’. This tour also honours the solo hits of Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and the late Glenn Frey, offering a full-bodied tribute to the band’s enduring legacy.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1971, the Eagles are one of the bestselling bands of all time, with more than 150 million albums sold worldwide, six number-one albums, and six Grammy Awards. Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) remains one of the best-selling albums of the 20th century, while Hotel California, released in December 1976, is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock albums ever recorded.

The Australian Eagles Show doesn’t just perform the songs — they channel the spirit of the original band, delivering an authentic concert experience that continues to wow fans across Australia and beyond.

FEBRUARY 2026

‘We Are Geelong:’ Cats Launch 2026 Brand Campaign

The Geelong Football Club is proud to launch its new brand campaign titled ‘We Are Geelong,’ ahead of the 2026 AFL season.

Selected from the famous opening line of the club song, ‘We Are Geelong’ invokes a sense of unity with a connection between players, staff, members and fans.

Whether at home or far away, the brand aims to remind all Geelong people that they are a valued part of the Cats family, connected in the club’s quest for the ultimate success.

A focal point of the community, the Cats are a unique club with a state of the art precinct, the towering lights at GMHBA Stadium dominating the skyline and reminding visitors of the importance of Geelong to the region.

But it takes so much more than just the players on the field to continue achieving success, with the Cats’ loyal and devoted followers helping the club to continue striving for greatness.

The brand encapsulates a feeling of pride while also remaining fearless, creating an impact that lasts and that everyone is a valued part of the Cats family.

It also entails an explorer mindset, looking to unlock authentic experiences by inspiring adventure, individuality, freedom and discovery.

Geelong aims to welcome all to the club, while also giving back to the community and celebrating our heritage.

The ‘We Are Geelong’ campaign will be evident across the Cats’ social media channels, website, memberships, community and all content across the 2026 season, as the Geelong Football Club continues to push for success this year.

Learning From the Master: Dempsey Evolving Ahead of 2026 Season

Looking to take the next step in his development, Ollie Dempsey has sought advice from an all-time great during the pre-season in preparation for another big campaign

There are a plethora of emotions that any draft prospect will go through, as they watch on and wait to see if their dreams will become reality.

A combination of excitement, anticipation, nerves and patience are required, while clubs sift through the draft pool in search of their next superstar.

The experience was no different for West Australian prospect Renee Morgan, who had to wait until the middle of the third round to hear her name called out.

But any worries were quickly dispelled for Morgan, creating a moment with her friends and family that she will remember forever.

It is not necessarily a rarity for players to seek guidance from others who have walked the same path before them, helping to develop their understanding of the rigours involved with Australian Rules Football.

It is, however, an uncommon phenomenon for the mentor providing counsel to be one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.

The situation is one that has befallen young Cats star Ollie Dempsey and his ever-growing connection with Gary Ablett Junior, the pair forming a strong bond over footy, faith and family.

Already firmly in the conversation as one of the competition’s best wingers, Dempsey has noticeably spent plenty of time in the gym over the pre-season, looking to match his elite endurance and running prowess with strength around the contest.

The change has come as Dempsey looks to expand his skillset and experiment with different roles in the lead-up to the 2026 season, and there is nobody that can provide advice on playing through the midfield quite like ‘The Little Master.’

“He actually has given advice, he has been really good,” Dempsey said.

“I say that I don’t often talk to him about footy, but when I do, he has a wealth of knowledge.

“I have touched on it with him, the footy side of things a bit more recently and it has been really good. Working on a few different things like spacing around the footy, it is obviously a bit different coming from the wing to inside.

“I have learned a bit off him which is really nice, and I will continue to do that as I go along in my career, which I am very blessed to be able to do.”

Dempsey’s last two seasons have been nothing short of extraordinary, going from a fringe player at the beginning of 2024 to a Rising Star winner and one of Geelong’s most important players, all within the space of 18 months.

But despite his accomplishments on the field, the 23-year-old set tongues wagging around the competition with some preseason images showing his progression heading into 2026, something that Dempsey said his teammates did not miss.

“I did see a few of those posts, a lot of the boys gave me a bit of smack about it which is funny as well,” Dempsey said.

“I think it is always something, I am trying to get bigger and stronger, especially if I am going to play different positions.

“As long as I keep my running up, which I think I have, I felt like I have come back fitter than ever which is really nice.

“I just want to keep working towards that, keep getting bigger hopefully.”

The Cats have been down in Warrnambool this week as part of their 2026 Community Camp.

Players have taken part in numerous activities including school visits, a super clinic and an open training session.

Once the team returns to Geelong, preparations will ramp up with the new season drawing ever so close.

The Cats’ first match simulation is less than two weeks away, before their official practice match on the 25th of February and then all eyes will turn to Opening Round.

But before all that happens, Dempsey noted that the trip down the coast has provided a nice chance for the Cats to give back to the community and the club’s loyal fans.

“It is so nice coming down here,” Dempsey said.

“We often come down here, every year to Warrnambool and it is always a good community. We were greeted by a lot of good fans down here, so we love coming down here.

“We get to visit schools and do all of that, it is a good time of year.”

WELCOME TO GEELONG UNITED BASKETBALL’S WEEKLY UPDATE

WNBL Update

Our squad hit the court last Friday afternoon for their final home game of WNBL 26.

A tough task lay ahead in reigning premiers Bendigo, who up to this point Geelong had never beaten throughout their two seasons in the league. However, it was the home side who would come out firing, surprising the Spirit to claim a 7 point win and another major scalp for the season – Venom now having defeated all top end sides in Townsville, Perth and Bendigo.

Next up was a road trip to Sydney on Sunday afternoon, where once again Geelong would show some true grit, silencing a Flames side who were looking to make one last attempt at a finals berth. Claiming back to back wins for the first time this season, Geelong walked away 13 point winners.

Next up, we’re hitting the road once again for our final regular season game. We’ll look to spoil another season at AIS Arena when we take on the UC Capitals who desperately need the win to have any hope of making the final four.

NBL1 Update

Things are starting to take shape ahead of the NBL1 season, which kicks off for our Geelong sides on March 28.

Some big signings have already been announced, with plenty more big names still to come!

Our women’s squad are looking to go one better than last season, where after a perfect regular season and finals campaign, they fell agonisingly short at the final hurdle, going down to a tough Knox outfit in the Grand Final.

The team though will be boosted by the re-signing of captain Jaz Shelley, alongside speedy point guard Lilly Rotunno.

As for the men’s squad, the man who many consider one of the GOAT’s of Geelong Basketball, DeMarcus Gatlin is back for another season with united. Another huge signing was also announced late last week in current Cairns Taipans NBL star, Lachlan Barker.

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG

FEBRUARY 2026

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate Parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Rippleside Park is a beautiful regional foreshore park located on the Bay Trail.

This well utilised park provides exercise equipment, BBQ facilities, beach access and open spaces with views over Corio Bay.

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

The City partnered with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and the Federal and State Governments to build a regional-level play area for children of all abilities to play together.

The park features:

• 4x Accessible BBQ’s and picnic facilities

• 4x Accessible parking bays

• Registered Changing Places

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

Protecting retirement income from inflation

AGED CARE

The fall in inflation from multi-decade highs is good news for the Australian economy. Many retirees are struggling to manage their cost of living because of the cumulative impact inflation has had on their financial position. Looking forward, retirees need a portfolio that is protected from inflation risks so that they don’t experience another cost-ofliving crisis when inflation has another upturn.

Maintaining the long-term real value of investments

The key to a successful investment strategy is the ability to generate returns over the long term. Managing inflation is an important piece of the strategy. Long term investments need to be able to generate a real rate of return that provides growth in the investment value. The investments do not need to capture short-term inflation changes, but they need to offset the impact of inflation over time. Assets that are expected to do this are generally referred to as ‘growth’ assets. To demonstrate this, we can look at the historical performance of assets over the long run1.Looking at Australian investment returns between 19002023, equities provided a return higher than inflation in 81 years which was 73% of the time. The one-year success rate for bonds and bills (cash) were lower, constrained by historical limits on bond yields. Both bonds and bills provided a one-year real return only 62% of the time in the same period.

The long run probabilities are shown in Figure 1. As the investment horizon extends out, up to 25 years, the probability of equities providing a real return increases. The higher returns on the investment eventually overcome any initial shortfall. Bond and bill investments show little improvement with a longer investment horizon2. At horizons of 20 years, the probability of delivering a positive real return from nominal bonds was only 60%. Historically, all investment horizons of 16 years (and longer) have provided a positive real return for Australian equities. While history does not provide a guarantee, the increase shown in Figure 1 should provide confidence that a long-term investment in equities will provide real capital growth.

This analysis can be extended to diversified products such as a 70/30 growth fund (70% equities and 30% bonds) and a

50/50 balanced fund (50% equities and 50% bonds). These both show trend improvements over time, benefiting from the exposure to growth assets, but over longer periods. The 70/30 fund needed 20 years and the 50/50 fund 25 years historically to ensure the positive real return.

The portfolio comparison in retirement is important in the generation of income over longer periods. If income is taken as a set percentage of the balance than changes in income will directly link to market movements. Also, there are market-linked annuities available in Australia where the capital is consumed but the income, which is paid for life, will be directly linked to the performance of the specified market or underlying investments. This paper provides a historical basis to consider the inflation protection provided by these income streams. Historical investment performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance, but it is worth considering the timeframe for recovery from historical shocks.

1. The historical data in this paper comes from the Dimson, Marsh and Staunton dataset as provided by Morningstar.Recent data on indices relates to the S&P/ASX 200 Accumulation index, Bloomberg AusBond Composite 0+Yr Index and Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill Index. Recent inflation data is the CPI sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

2. The majority of these periods were between 1933 and 1973 when bond yields were set by regulation.

Inflation risk in retirement

Inflation is often called out as a risk in retirement that needs to be managed differently. Longevity and sequencing risks are also noted as being different, and these are not present in the accumulation phase. One of the challenges with managing inflation risk in retirement, is that inflation risk has a different impact on a portfolio in the retirement phase. Management of inflation risk in retirement needs a different approach. It is not just that capital needs to regain its real value, but every income payment needs to keep its value to maintain the target lifestyle of the retiree.

We can examine this difference by considering the outcome for someone who started to draw an income at the start of 1973. This was one of the worst years in the historical comparison where the inflation spike meant that any investment-linked income would be falling in real terms in the first year. If a retiree’s income was linked to an investment, the real value would have declined for any of the three assets: Bills by 3.5%; Bonds by 26%

and Equities by 30.7%. What happens over time is the recovery in the level of income. Income linked to equity performance briefly exceeds the original value in 1980 but dips again before maintaining real gains from 1983. Bills provide higher real income from 1985 while bonds will take until 1992. The 19year impact on bonds highlights the exposure that nominal bonds have to inflation risks. The pattern for income linked to the different markets from 1973 can be seen in Figure 2.

Source: Calculations, based on data from Morningstar, S&P, Bloomberg and ABS

There is more at stake for retirees. The impact is not just the length of time to recover the real capital value, but the income that is lost over that period. For the nine years that the real equity-linked income is under the starting point, a retiree needs to reduce their lifestyle or run their capital down early. The shortfall is shown in Figure 3. It highlights the cumulative shortfall in income, relative to the initial lifestyle of the retiree. The starting point is where inflation risk creates an impact which might be after the start of retirement.

The shortfall highlights the extent of the impact from an inflation shock. The worst performance is from bonds, where more than 7 years of income (lifestyle) were lost over a 17-year period before a modest recovery. For equity-linked income, nearly three years of lifestyle were lost over nine years. While there was a strong recovery after, this is an average of a third of total spending that needs to be cut for an extended period. Cash investments took longer to fully recover, but the extent of the pain was not as large. The worst point is ten years after the shock, where the retiree has missed 1.7 years of real spending.

Source: Challenger calculations, based on data from Morningstar, S&P, Bloomberg and ABS

The extended pain highlights why inflation risk is an additional risk to consider in retirement. It is not just the capital recovery, but it is the lost lifestyle that happens when an income stream does not keep pace with inflation. Retirees that choose a market-linked income stream need to have the capacity to sustain a potential extended period of reduced lifestyle before they can enjoy an increased lifestyle later in retirement.

Payment profiles and income indexation

The analysis so far has highlighted how inflation shocks can impact a lifestyle based on an initial spending level. In practice, not all spending profiles are the same. The different approaches to generating income provide differing levels of starting income. There are some differences in product features that impact the payment rates, so for comparison we will look at rates for Challenger Lifetime Annuity (Liquid Lifetime) options as at 8 April 2024 where the lifetime income streams all include capital access and a death benefit in line with the maximum allowable under the Capital Access Schedule3. The differing options for indexation of an income stream include:

• CPI-linked lifetime income

• Market-linked lifetime income4

• Accelerated payments with market-linked lifetime income

A CPI-linked lifetime income stream sustains the lifestyle of the retiree by adjusting their payments with changes in the cost of living. A market-linked income stream uses an indirect approach, that requires market movements to exceed CPI inflation over time to maintain the lifestyle of the retiree.

3. For an explanation of how the Capital Access Schedule operates see: 4.9.3.35 Means test assessment of asset-tested income streams (lifetime) | Social Security Guide (dss.gov.au)

4. Different market-linked options are available, but the initial payment is the same for each option.

Accelerated payments are designed to smooth the income profile of market-linked income streams. Recognising that payments are expected to grow over time, some of the income can be front-loaded by indexing the payments by a fixed percentage lower than the market return. This provides a higher starting payment that will grow more slowly. This fixed percentage is sometimes called the assumed investment rate (AIR). The analysis includes payments for an AIR of 2.5% p.a. and 5% p.a. The difference in the initial payment rates as shown in Figure 4 can be substantial.

Source: Challenger, as at 8 April 2024

Figure 2: Investment-linked income example
Figure 3: Cumulative shortfall in real incomes
Figure 4: Initial payment rates

Current rates provide a range of starting payments, per $100,000 of around $4,000 to $7,000 a year, for a 65-yearold male. A market-linked lifetime annuity with a 5% AIR has payments starting at a rate 78% higher than one with no AIR. Over time the payments will increase by 5% less each year so over time the payments will cross over. This wedge is independent of market movements.

The paths for the 30 years from Dec 1993 to Dec 2023 can be seen in Figure 5. This shows the five-fold increase for payments that were linked to the accumulation performance of the S&P/

ASX200 over that time. The 5% AIR hurdle provided the highest initial payment, but lower indexation meant that this would not have been the highest after 2004, only 11 years into retirement. The smaller increase in the payments with a 5% AIR would not have kept up with inflation from the initial payment level. It provided a flatter spending profile that declines in real terms.

Dividend strategy

Another approach with an equity investment is to use only the dividend payments for retirement income. Dividend yields tend to be counter-cyclical so dividends are not as volatile as share prices. The question is how well they keep up with inflation over time. Again, we can use the available historical data5 to see what might have happened. One difference is that none of the dividends are reinvested. When dividends are higher, a marketlinked strategy effectively reinvests the excess. A dividend strategy spends this excess which has an impact over longer horizons.

Another difference with a dividend strategy is the starting income levels. The starting income reflects the dividend yield available at the time, with no consumption of capital over time. The first challenge is to see if the dividends protect from inflation for the given starting level. Figure 6 highlights how the dividend strategy does not provide the same level of protection of an equity market-linked strategy. It begins with a 60% success rate, similar to the equities market-linked strategy with a 5% AIR. Over time, the success rate improves, but it does not match an equity market-linked strategy. Historically, dividend growth over 25 years was below inflation in 10% of the scenarios. The earliest in this sample was 1929-1954 and the latest was 19691994.

Source: Challenger calculations, based on data from Morningstar, S&P, Bloomberg and ABS

The dividend strategy maintains the capital invested in the underlying equities so the income payments will be lower than what can be achieved if the capital is consumed over retirement. On average, the dividend yield has been 4.65% p.a. and is currently 5.2% including franking credits. Investors might expect inflation protection similar to an equity-linked 5% AIR investment. In practice, the initial income is lower with a dividend strategy, but the lower income is better protected than the 5% AIR strategy. However, it can take a long time to catch up the initial income gap.

Another impact of maintaining the capital is that the dividend strategy does not increase payments at older ages. The comparison to market-linked lifetime income streams is shown in Figure 7 which shows that only the market-linked strategy with a 5% AIR has a higher initial payment at age 65, but by age 75, the dividend strategy provides lower payments than any of the other strategies. This demonstrates that a dividend strategy supports a lower lifestyle than a strategy that will consume capital over time. Retirees are unable to maximise the money available to spend through retirement if they do not draw down on their capital.

Age Pension

Another consideration for retirees thinking about inflation protection is their entitlement to the Age Pension. Around two in three current retirees receive at least a partial Age Pension, and while this is likely to decline, a significant proportion of retirees will continue to receive some Age Pension in the future. The Age Pension provides an income stream that automatically increases with inflation. Over time, it will also increase with real wages growth, but the real wage declines in recent years mean that it is probably still several more years until the Age Pension will increase more than inflation.

The mechanics of the Age Pension indexation can result in retirees receiving a partial Age Pension being over compensated. The full Age Pension payment is indexed and any means-tested amounts are calculated relative to the new full payment. While earned income is likely to increase with inflation, the assets held by an asset-tested pensioner might increase by less than inflation, or even fall. In this case, the proportionate increase in Age Pension payments might be higher than inflation reducing the need to fully protect a retirement portfolio from inflation. This protection is provided only up to the value of the Age Pension. If a retiree has any lifestyle requirements above the safety-net provided by the Age Pension they need to be fully protected against inflation.

Conclusion

Protecting an investment portfolio from inflation can be an important concern for any investor. In retirement, the challenge increases as a retiree needs to protect their income stream to be able to sustain their lifestyle. While some investments can protect against inflation over the long run, market-linked investments don’t necessarily protect an income stream from inflation over the short to medium term. Retirees who want to be able to maintain their lifestyle need the inflation protection that can be provided by a CPIlinked income stream. The Age Pension will deliver some of this for retirees, but those with a lifestyle goal above the Age Pension’s safety net will need an additional source of inflation-protected income.
