Anzac Day is one of the most significant national days in Australia. It is observed annually on April 25th, which commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troops at Gallipoli in 1915 during World War I. The day serves as a tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all servicemen and women who have served in conflicts since.
Anzac Day is marked by a series of ceremonies and events, with the most prominent being the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Thousands of people gather before sunrise to honor the Anzacs in a solemn and moving tribute. The service includes prayers, speeches, hymns, and the haunting sounds of the Last Post, followed by a moment of silence.
Across regional Victoria, communities hold their own Dawn Services in local war memorials, bringing together people of all ages to pay their respects. These ceremonies often include wreath-laying, recitations of the Ode of Remembrance, and reflections on the sacrifices made by Australian service members.
As each year passes, Anzac Day remains a vital part of Victoria’s cultural and historical identity. It reminds us of the cost of freedom and the enduring spirit of those who served. By attending services, participating in marches, or simply taking a moment to reflect, we ensure that the legacy of the Anzacs lives on for future generations.
Anzac Day in Victoria is more than just a public holiday—it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and community spirit. It is a day when Australians come together to remember the sacrifices of those who served and to uphold the values of courage, mateship, and perseverance that define the Anzac legacy.
Anzac Day continues to serve as a bridge between generations, ensuring that the lessons of history are never forgotten. By attending services, participating in commemorations, or simply taking a moment of silence, Victorians reaffirm their commitment to honoring those who defended the nation’s freedom. The Anzac spirit remains an enduring symbol of resilience and unity, reminding us all of the power of remembrance.
we forget.

Greater Geelong has the largest public art collection of any municipality in Victoria.
Our public art tells the stories of our city, while adding colour and intrigue to our open spaces.
It stimulates minds, inspires and challenges people, attracts visitors and brings culture to our Clever and Creative city.
And we want your help shaping the future of public art in our region over the next decade.
The City of Greater Geelong is developing its new Public Art Strategy to provide a clear direction for our public art programs over the next ten years.
It’s essential this strategy reflects the aspirations of our community and we’re holding interactive workshops for people to share their views and experiences of public art.
The first of these will take place at our Wurriki Nyal civic precinct in central Geelong on Thursday 3 April, with another workshop planned at Barwon Heads Arts Hub on Saturday 5 April.
Our libraries in central Geelong, Corio, Lara, Armstrong Creek and Drysdale will host informal pop-up sessions across various dates.
You can also fill out a survey on our Have Your Say webpage and tell us what you love about art in Geelong and beyond, and share great local stories that we could bring to life through public art.
Already many fantastic murals and sculptures breathe life into public spaces across our region and pay homage to the people, cultures, industries and movements that have shaped our city.
As Mayor, I want Geelong to be renowned for its public art and plan to champion art throughout my term.
I urge you to have your say in the future of our public art, as it’s part of the cultural identity we all share as the City of Greater Geelong.

At 7:30pm on Tuesday 25 March 2025, the Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, released the Government’s 2025-26 Budget. The Treasurer identified five main Budget priorities:
• Helping with the cost of living;
• Strengthening Medicare;
• Building more homes;
• Investing in every stage of education; and
• Making our economy stronger, more productive and more resilient.
The Budget features a number of measures that will impact those leading into retirement and those already in retirement.
It is important to note that at this time any proposed measures are not yet law and could change through implementation.
The big picture
The Budget deficit has made an unwelcome, but not surprising, return. The Albanese government has been clear that we were headed back into the red, and Treasurer Chalmers says the $42.1 billion deficit is less than what was forecast at both the last election and at the mid-year update. Gross debt has been reduced by $177 billion down to $940 billion, saving around $60 billion in interest over the decade.
Nonetheless, Australia is navigating choppy international waters with a “volatile and unpredictable” global economy.
Australia will feel the shockwaves from escalating trade tensions, two major global conflicts – in Ukraine and the Middle East, and slowing growth in China. Treasury predicts the global economy will grow by 3.25 per cent in each of the next three years in the longest stretch of below-average growth since the early 1990s.
However, Australia is in a good position to deal with the difficult conditions, the Treasurer says.
The Australian economy has “turned a corner” and continues to outperform many advanced economies. Inflation
has moderated “significantly”, and the labour market has outperformed expectations. Meanwhile growth is predicted to increase from 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent by 2026-27.
Much of the 2025 Federal Budget was already known, after a volley of preelection spruiking for votes. But Treasurer Jim Chalmers had one surprise up his sleeve - $17 billion in tax cuts. The first round of cuts will kick in on 1 July 2026 and a second round on 1 July 2027, saving the average earner $536 each year when fully implemented.
Reduction in the lowest marginal tax rate for individuals.
The lowest individual marginal tax rate will be reduced over two financial years from the current 16% to 14%.
From 1 July 2026, the 16% tax rate, which applies to taxable income between $18,201 and $45,000, will be reduced to 15%. From 1 July 2027, this tax rate will be reduced further to 14%.
The reduction in the lowest marginal tax rate means that in 2026-27, individuals may see a tax reduction of $268 and in 2027-28 and future years, a reduction of $536 per year compared to the 2024-25 tax rates.
The energy bill relief is also being extended to the end of this year. At a cost of $1.8 billion, every household and around one million small businesses will each receive $150 off their electricity bills in two quarterly payments.
The government claims that energy bill relief has helped to drop electricity prices by 25.2 per cent across 2024.
Students aren’t forgotten in the Budget with a cut of $19 billion in student loan debt, with all outstanding student debts reduced by 20 per cent and a promised change to make the student loan repayment system fairer.
The government is tackling the cost of living where it’s often most obvious – at the cash register. It is providing support for fresh produce suppliers to enforce their rights and will make it easier to open new supermarkets. It’s also planning to focus on “unfair and excessive” card surcharges.
Almost $8 billion will be spent to expand bulk billing, the largest single investment in Medicare since its creation 40 years ago.
Treasurer Chalmers says 9-out-of-10 GP visits should be bulk billed by the end of the decade with an extra 4,800 bulk billing practices.
thresholds The Medicare Levy low-income thresholds to be exempt from paying the Medicare Levy for singles, families and seniors and pensioners will increase in 2024-25. *Individual resident taxpayer and does not include 2% Medicare Levy, where relevant.
There’ll also be another 50 Urgent Care Clinics across the country, taking the total to 137, and public hospitals will get a boost of $1.8 billion to help cut waiting lists, reduce waiting times in emergency rooms and manage ambulance ramping.
The cost of medicines is also in the government’s sights. The maximum cost of drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will be lowered for everyone with a Medicare Card and no concession card. From 1 January 2026, the maximum co-payment will be lowered from $31.60 to $25.00 per script and remain at $7.70 for pensioners and concession cardholders. Four out of five PBS medicines will become cheaper for general non-Safety Net patients, with larger savings for medicines eligible for a 60 day prescription.
An extra $1.8 billion is also being invested to list new medicines on the PBS. Increasing the housing stock.
The government’s previously announced target of 1.2 million new homes over five years has seen 45,000 homes completed in the first quarter.
The budget sees an extra $54 million to encourage modern construction methods and $120 million to help states and territories remove red tape.
With building set to increase, more apprentices are needed, and the government has announced financial incentives of up to $10,000 to encourage more people to take up apprenticeships in building trades. Some employers may also be eligible for $5,000 incentives for hiring apprentices.
The Help to Buy program that allows homebuyers to get into the market with lower deposits and small mortgages will be expanded with an extra $800 million to lift property price and income caps to make the scheme more accessible.
To help increase housing stock available, foreign buyers will be banned from purchasing existing dwellings for two years from 1 April 2025. Land banking by foreign owners will also be outlawed.
The Government will provide additional funding over five years from 2024-25 to continue delivery of the aged care reforms:
• $116.1 million in 2025–26 in additional funding for the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission to deliver its regulatory functions under the Aged Care Act 2024
• $53.2 million in 2025–26 to continue implementation of the Single Assessment System and support the staged digital implementation of the Aged Care Act 2024 to ensure continuity of aged care assessment services
• $47.6 million over four years from 2025–26 to support First Nations organisations to deliver culturally appropriate aged care assessments for First Nations people
• $24.4 million in 2024–25 for additional Commonwealth Home Support Programme assessments to meet new requirements under the Aged Care Act 2024
• $7.8 million in 2025–26 for the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission to support the staged digital implementation of the Aged Care Act 2024
The Government will provide additional funding over five years from 2024-25 to fund the outcome of the Fair Work Commission’s decision to increase the minimum award wages of registered and enrolled nurses employed in the aged care sector:
• $48.7 million over three years from 2024–25 for Commonwealth Home Support Programme providers to cover the cost of the increase in award wages
• $35.5 million over two years from 2025–26 to fund historical leave provisions for Commonwealthfunded aged care providers
The Government will also provide an additional $2.5 billion over five years from 2024-25 (and an additional $6.1 billion from 2029-30 to 2034-35) to meet the cost of the Fair Work Commission’s decision for aged care nurses with funding to other aged care programs including residential aged care, the Home Care Packages program and the Support at Home program.
Despite concerning events on the world stage, Australia’s economy is emerging “in better shape than almost any other advanced economy”.
Inflation and unemployment are coming down and wage growth will be stronger. To help underpin continuing economic growth, the Budget adds $22.7 billion to the government’s Future Made in Australia agenda.
It includes extra investment in renewable energies and low emissions technologies and an expansion of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. The plan also includes more than $15 billion in support for private investment in hydrogen and critical minerals production, clean energy technology manufacturing, green metals and low carbon liquid fuels.
And, as the trade war kicks off, the Budget allocates $20 million to a Buy Australian campaign.
“The plan at the core of this Budget is about more than putting the worst behind us. It’s about seizing what’s ahead of us,” the Treasurer says.

If You’re Feeling Tense, Foggy, or Over It—This Is Probably Why
There’s a moment leaders don’t talk about enough—the one where you look around and realise you’re doing everything “right”... but something still feels off.
You’re productive. You’re showing up. But underneath it all, there’s pressure. Pressure to be better. Pressure to prove you’re across everything. Pressure to lead with certainty when internally, you’re not sure if you’re even making a dent.
This pressure doesn’t just drain your energy—it kills your presence. It clogs up your clarity. It makes even small conversations feel heavier than they should.
Let’s call it what it is: you’re not just tired. You’re carrying too much.
When you decide to stop seeing yourself as someone who just does the work and start owning the role of someone who
leads with intent, your nervous system responds. The mental fog lifts. You get moments of calm presence. You trust yourself a little more.
That’s not woo-woo. That’s biology. That’s your brain creating a new pathway.
But you’ve got to anchor it. Sit in it. Visualise that version of you often. Otherwise, the old noise sneaks back in and runs the show.
The Pressure You’re Carrying? It’s Not Helping You Lead.
Let’s get blunt: all that pressure you’re placing on yourself to be better, get it right, or make sure no one sees you sweat—it’s stealing your edge.
If you don’t let go of it:
• You’ll start doubting your own gut calls.
• You’ll prep for conversations but still leave frustrated.
• You’ll start looking to others to validate decisions you already knew were right.
• And slowly, you’ll stop trusting yourself—which is exactly what kills momentum.
You don’t need more skills. You need less noise.
Letting
Here’s how to start doing it in real terms:
1. Spot the internal pressure you’ve normalised. What are you trying to prove? Who are you trying to impress? Is it even necessary anymore?
2. Decide to stop letting it lead your decisions. Not once. Every day. Because this stuff creeps back in if you don’t call it out.
3. Build the new neural path. Visualise yourself leading with confidence and calm. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between visual and real. Use that to your advantage.
4. Shift from external to internal outcomes. Before a big conversation or decision, ask yourself:
• What do I want to feel when this is done?
• Am I chasing approval, or am I aligned with what matters?
• What would make me proud here?
This is how you build self-trust in real time.
Got a big leadership goal? Whether it’s team transformation, driving strategy, or stepping into a higher-level role—you’ll only move towards it when your clarity outweighs your pressure.
Ask yourself:
• What will show me I’m making progress—without needing it to be perfect?
• What’s the version of “structure” that helps me operate well?
• What do I want to feel during this process—not just achieve?
Start writing your vision in real words, with milestones, emotion, and impact. You’re not building a to-do list. You’re building a leadership story.
Here’s the trap: in the pursuit of your next goal, you drop the habits that created the progress you already have.
Don’t do that.
If you’ve built momentum—stronger 1-on-1s, team connection, more honesty, better energy—protect it
Keep the rhythm of weekly WIPs. Stay accessible with open-door sessions. Hold your 1-on-1s. Make them count. Keep the cultural rituals that foster trust.
That’s your leadership foundation. Don’t bulldoze it to build something new.
You’re Not Behind—You’re Just Carrying Too Much
This is the part most leaders miss. They keep piling on strategies and tools and KPIs, trying to “fix” what’s not working.
But the real shift doesn’t come from adding more. It comes from letting go.
Let go of:
• The belief that you need to have all the answers.
• The pressure to prove your worth through results.
• The tension that creeps in when your focus is on how you’re being perceived.
Because when you let go of that? You finally get access to the good stuff: Calm. Clarity. Decisiveness. Momentum.
Ready to work through this in real terms? DM me or book your Power to Lead Call. Let’s clear the clutter and get you moving with sharp, confident focus.

Is your passion as strong as it was when you started your business? What is your Vision for your future?
Where do you see yourself in 1, 3, 5, 10 years’ time?
Why are you in business?
For those of us who have been in business a number of years, we sometimes loose our mojo. We forget why we started our business in the first place. Especially after any major uncontrollable events such as we have experienced over the last few years. To look towards a future with passion, longevity, and scalability, now more than ever we need to think outside the square.
The most successful businesses over the years are those that have been able to adapt to consumers’ needs. Not what they want to sell. Spending patterns have changed, needs have changed. Consumers are looking for that which they do not have, to make their lives easier, both at work and home. One of the most successful companies in the world right now is Zoom. Most people did not need zoom 2 years ago but now almost all service providers and offices use it continuously. Many families use it to keep in touch with friends and family members around the world. Kodak used to be one of the biggest companies in the US, today they only sell products that relate to the print market as they did not move with the times into the digital sphere.
Your purpose does not change. Your direction may change, the product mix you sell will change over time, but your purpose rarely ever changes. Every one
of us has their own passion and purpose for starting a business.
Did you go into business to:-
• Leave a legacy for your family?
• Build a nest egg for your retirement expeditions?
• Increase your assets for early retirement?
• Want to be your own boss?
• Want to work your hours around family commitment?
• Set up a business that will allow you to travel and still run your business in online?
• Support others in the community?
• Give back in any way you can?
Whatever you purpose was, do you still feel the same passion for your business today?
Reinvigorate that passion in your business through increased Sales, Profits, customer traffic and basket size.
Your consumers have been locked up for so long they are looking for excuses to get out and to buy what they do not have or need to replace. Whether you sell physical products or services, the action plans are essentially the same. Create theatre and excitement with your goods through the selling process. Be creative with the presentation of the products. Change your marketing message. Technology is moving everything so fast the need is for new and different moves with that speed. They do not necessarily want to replace what they had, they want an updated better model.
What are you doing differently compared to two years ago? What differentiates you from your competitors? How are you displaying your goods in an innovative way that creates interest with
your current consumers and attracting new ones. With the number of businesses that have sadly closed their doors that is good for those that have been able to stand the test of time. Be creative with the products as well as the marketing. Through the internet, most consumers today are savvier about the products that are available and can read through a “marketing sell”. Research the market, check out your competitors what they are doing. Do not be a “me too” know your competitors so you can do things differently. Be authentic, be genuine, be up to date with trends.
There is every opportunity for growth if we work towards one key goal, our consumers WIIFM. What motivates your consumer? What do they need to make their life better? Their experience with you both in store and online is just as important as the products or service they buy. Our consumers are the backbone of our business. Look after them by making their life easy and responding to their needs.
If you are not sure how to apply this in your business, seek help through a mentor whom you can bounce your ideas off, and work through a plan to achieve the results you are looking for. My Passion is to help small business owners to achieve their goals, one business at a time. Bring me your passion and I will assist you to turn it into increased sales, profit, traffic and basket size. https:// developingexcellenceinbusiness.com. au/contact-us/.
Reignite your passion in your business and your consumers will come with you.
If you would like support to address this in your business book a time for a complimentary A.W.P. Appointment With Purpose with Deb Fribbins https:// calendly.com/deb-fribbins/discoverysession. We will explore your options together to secure longevity in your business.

You wake up in the morning, check your phone, and see notifications that your online payments have been received through the night, you’ve got notifications from all the different cloud services you use. Everything just works… Right?
In 2023, it is common for a business to use many different cloud services, even for hands-on businesses like electricians, at a minimum you’ll have your bank account, email, website, invoicing, payroll, payment system and that’s as a starting point. Businesses without basic security measures are vulnerable to cyber security attacks, and in 20212022 the average cost per cybercrime reported was $39,000 for small businesses.
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it’s good to have a check to see where you and your business stand.
These steps, while simple, are costeffective and can help protect you and your business.
Updates to your devices and software often contain new features or change the functionality of the application you use, but one of the most important aspects of updates is the security updates. These security updates allow the latest bugs to be remedied on devices, whether it be your laptop or your phone and remove the vulnerability.
Patching these security vulnerabilities is made easy with Automatic Updates. Ensuring your device is set to update automatically means you won’t have to even think about updating.
Passwords are vulnerable to compromise, and Multi-Factor Authentication gives you an extra layer of security. MFA will require a combination of multiple pieces of information only you know, such as a password, rolling number (authenticator app, RSA token), physical device or even a biometric reading.
Securing your accounts with an MFA is a must-do in our connected life, some examples of high-quality MFAs are.
• YubiKey (https://www.yubico.com)
• Microsoft Authenticator (https:// www.microsoft.com/en-au/security/ mobile-authenticator-app)
• Google Authenticator (https:// support.google.com/accounts/ answer/1066447)
• Duo (https://duo.com)
How to check if my login information has been compromised
A great online tool run by Australian Troy Hunt is the website Have I Been Pwned. This allows you to check if your email and password have been compromised by any large data breaches. No organisation is immune to data breaches with these well-known Australian businesses hit; Optus, Medibank, Latitude Financial, and Pizza Hut, to just name a few recent.
Anti-virus, EDR, XDR, MDR. While there are many names for endpoint protection, and it is an important element in protecting your devices with market leaders offering ransomware protection (rollback) and other advanced features. Protect your business by protecting your devices.

What if your next fundraising campaign didn’t just meet expectations—but shattered them?
If you’re aiming to boost donations, expand your reach, or build lasting donor relationships, it’s not about working harder—it’s about working smarter.
These five powerful campaigns aren’t just ideas—they’re proven strategies that inspire action and deliver real, measurable results.
Peer-to-Peer Fundraising: Empower your Supporters
Peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising isn’t just a trend—it’s one of the most eff ective ways to organically grow your NFP’s donor base. It empowers your supporters to fundraise on your behalf as individuals reach out to friends, family and colleagues, tapping into personal networks to spread your not-for-profit’s message. 92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family over any other form of advertising (Nielsen), making P2P fundraising a fantastic avenue for successful NFP campaigns. Plus, peer-topeer campaigns typically raise twice as much as traditional fundraising eff orts because they reach wider audiences.
The key to success is equipping your fundraisers with the right tools, such as social media templates, email scripts, and easy-to-use donation pages, to make the process accessible and enjoyable. Recognising top fundraisers with shoutouts or small rewards can also keep motivation high.
Success Story:
Movember’s global campaign is a great example, raising over $1 billion worldwide by turning personal stories into powerful fundraising tools. The combination of humour, personal connection, andglobalparticipation makes it one of the most eff ective peer-to-peer campaigns ever.
Seasonal giving campaigns align with key dates like Giving Tuesday, EOFY appeals, and the holiday season—times when people are naturally more inclined to give. Giving Tuesday alone raised over $3.1 billion in the U.S. in 2022, and 30% of all annual donations happen in December, with 10% occurring in the final three days of the year. By leaning into seasonal giving campaigns, your NFP can use these giving trends to increase fundraising throughout the year.
Creating urgency through countdowns, limited-time donation matches, or highlighting specific goals can significantly boost results.
Success Story:
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaignisaseasonalstaple, raising over $100 million annually during the holidays through both physical donation kettles and online giving platforms. Its recognisable branding and community engagement make it a model for successful seasonal giving.
As we discussed in our January Newsletter, social media is a powerful tool for notfor-profits, especially when it’s used to tell compelling stories. Story-driven campaigns can humanize your NFP’s cause which in turn creates emotional connections that inspire action. Focusing on real people and authentic stories that reflect the heart of your not-for-profit’s mission engages audiences. Short, emotional videos perform extremely well on social media such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. You can further engage with your fundraising campaign by encouraging followers to share their own stories and use dedicated hashtags to spread your NFP’s reach.
Success Story:
Charity:Water’s#WhyWatercampaign is a perfect example, using personal stories from communities impacted by clean water projects to create a global movement that has helped over 15 million people. Their simple, powerful storytelling approach turns donors into passionate advocates.
While one-time donations are important, recurring giving campaigns create a steady, reliable stream of income. Over one year, monthly donors give 42% more than one-time donors and have a retention rate of 90%, compared to 46% for one-time contributors.
Highlighting the convenience and longterm impact of monthly donations can turn casual supporters into lifelong advocates of your not-for-profit. Offering exclusive updates or behind-the-scenes content on projects occurring within your NFP helps keep these donors engaged.
Success Story:
World Vision’s Child Sponsorship Program is a shining example of a successful recurring giving campaign. Donors receive regular updates, photos, and personal stories about the child they’re sponsoring, creating an emotional connection that fosters long-term support—often lasting for years.
Event-Based Fundraising: Create Memorable Experiences
Events, whether in-person or virtual, are another fantastic way to raise funds for your NFP and strengthen community ties. Fundraising events can account for up to 35% of annual donations for many organisations, including NFP’s and 84% of attendees say they’re more likely to donate after participating. The rise of virtual events has expanded reach even further, increasing participation by 30% in many cases.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced that its data-matching program for lifestyle assets information obtained from insurance providers will continue for 2023–24 to 2025–26.
Data items collected include policy details for assets covered by the program and associated identification details (such as names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, ABNs and email addresses). This information will be matched against ATO lodgments to improve their tax compliance risk profiling and to provide a holistic view of your assets and accumulated wealth.
The lifestyle assets data-matching program allows the ATO to identify and address taxation risks, including omitted or incorrect reporting of income, capital gains, GST credits or fringe benefits tax. The program will also address inappropriate use of assets by self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), for example, where funds may be acquiring assets but applying them for the present-day benefit of members or other related parties.
Client information and policy details will be collected in relation to the following classes of assets:
- Caravans and motorhomes valued from $65,000
- Motor vehicles (including cars, trucks and motorcycles) valued from $65,000
- Thoroughbred horses valued from $65,000
- Fine art valued from $100,000 (per item)
- Marine vessels valued from $100,000
- Aircraft valued from $150,000.
You should be aware that capital gains tax may apply in relation to certain personal use assets or collectables. Where an asset purchased through your business is applied for personal use, liability for fringe benefits tax may arise. Special rules also prohibit personal use assets and collectables held by your SMSF from being used or leased by a related party.
If you have any questions about this data-matching program or would like to review your arrangements, please contact our office.

There are two types of reports that a business may be required to submit to the ATO on a regular basis – Business Activity Statement (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statement (IAS). These are used to report and pay several tax obligations. The difference between them is dependent on whether a business is registered for GST or not (see my article in the May 2024 edition about GST).
An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) is used by businesses that are not registered for GST but still need to report and pay other tax obligations. The IAS is used to report:
• PAYG Withholding (Employee Tax)
• PAYG Instalments (Business Tax Prepayments)
• Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Instalments
Who Needs to Lodge an IAS?
• Businesses not registered for GST but still withholding tax from employee wages.
• Businesses required to make PAYG instalments without a GST obligation.
• Entities directed to by the ATO.
Due Dates for IAS Lodgment
The IAS is usually required quarterly and is due by the 28th of the month following the quarter. For example, an IAS for the July to September quarter must be lodged by October 28. If you use a BAS Agent or Accountant to submit this for you, then you get additional time. Once your PAYG Withholding exceeds $25,001, you will need to switch to Monthly reporting.
A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is for businesses that are registered for Goods and Services Tax (GST). It is used to report and pay several tax obligations, including:
• GST (Goods and Services Tax)
• PAYG Withholding (Pay As You Go) –Employee Tax
• PAYG Instalments – Business Income Tax, prepayment
• Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Instalments
• Luxury Car Tax (LCT)
• Fuel Tax Credits (FTC)
• Wine Equalisation Tax (WET)
Businesses registered for GST must lodge a BAS, usually on a quarterly basis. However, some businesses with a large turnover may need to lodge monthly, while smaller businesses may qualify for annual reporting.
The BAS lodgement and payment deadlines depend on the reporting frequency:
Monthy 21st of the following month
Quarterly (Standard) 28th of the following month after the quarter ends (e.g., for Q1: July-September, due by October 28)
Annually When lodging the annual income tax return
If you use a BAS agent or Tax agent however, you will generally get additional time for the March, June and September Quarters. Late lodgement or payment may result in penalties and interest charges from the ATO.
Purpose Reports GST, PAYG, and other taxes Reports PAYG and other tax obligations (no GST)
Who Lodges? Businesses registered for GST Businesses not registered for GST but required to report PAYG
Lodgement Frequency Monthly, Quarterly, or Annually (depending on size of business)
Due Date
Monthly or Quarterly (depending on size of business)
21st or 28th of the following month (depending on frequency)
Businesses can lodge their BAS and IAS through various methods:
Online via the ATO Business Portal
Through a registered tax agent or BAS agent
Via Standard Business Reporting (SBR) software
By mail (paper lodgement, less common)
• Keep accurate financial records: Ensure all invoices, receipts, and payroll records are up-to-date.
• Use accounting software: Platforms like Xero, MYOB, or QuickBooks can simplify BAS and IAS reporting.
• Understand ATO payment plans: If unable to pay on time, businesses can negotiate a payment plan with the ATO to avoid penalties.
• Lodge on time: Late lodgement may result in penalties and general interest charges.
• Seek professional help: A BAS agent or accountant can ensure compliance and help reduce errors.
21st or 28th of the following month (depending on frequency) Conclusion
It is important to understand your obligations when it comes to BAS and IAS. Keeping adequate records and lodging on time will help you to stay compliant and avoid unnecessary penalties.

Interior painting relies for success on the quality of its preparation. Preparing a room for painting is time-consuming and laborious, but if you follow these tips, you will have beautiful, smooth walls every time.
Preparing the room
Shift all possible furniture out of the room and cover what’s left with canvas drop cloths. Canvas absorbs paint and prevents it leaking onto the floor, a common problem if you use old cotton sheet or plastic sheets. You can also cover odd-shaped furniture with cling wrap.
Dust all surfaces to be painted whether you believe they are clean or not. Minute fibres or dust particles will interfere with the painting process. You can use a damp cloth but the best tool for dusting is a long-handled microfibre duster, preferably with an extension handle to reach up to ceiling level. It is a good idea to wear a face mask while doing this, even if you don’t have allergies or your walls have been dusted recently.
To get rid of cobwebs and persuade spiders and all creepy crawlies to leave, use a long-handled brush.
To protect skirting boards and other surfaces you don’t want painted, apply masking or painter’s tape. Using a putty knife, press down firmly on the tape, especially where the unpainted and tobe-painted surfaces meet. This reduces paint bleed.
Check for any indentations or cracks in the surface. Use a putty knife and a minute amount of putty to fill in. Wipe off the excess and sand back gently.
Whether DIY or done by professionals, washing the walls is mandatory. If you’ve hired professionals, washing walls is not usually part of their service and they will charge extra for doing it. Hire a professional cleaner or do it yourself.
Using a sponge mop, clean the walls (and ceilings if you are painting those) with a solution of sugar soap, also known as TSP (trisodium phosphate). It is essential to apply sugar soap in kitchens, especially near greasy areas like stoves, as grease can prevent paint adhering to the walls. Walls previously painted with a satin or gloss paint also need sugar soap so that the new coat of paint will not crack due to the slippery sheen of the gloss. Note that sugar soap will darken some wooden surfaces such as mahogany.
To apply, put on rubber gloves and goggles and mix sugar soap into a bucket of warm water until it is dissolved
completely. Dip the sponge mop into the solution and wipe down the walls. Rinse the surface with a clean sponge and let it dry before starting to paint.
For small rooms, you could try Selley’s Sugar Soap Wipes. Clean with the smooth side and scrub with the other, rougher side to remove marks and stains. For more stubborn stains, try Mr Clean Eraser Pad Block. Cut to the size you need and test on an inconspicuous area. Scrub off those hard-to-lift pen scribbles or oils stains and rinse with water – easy!
First, set up a safe workstation. Access to and from the door should be free and uncluttered. Avoid situations where you have to reach over or across a ladder or painting equipment.
While you are painting, cover your paint trays with aluminium foil, or a plastic or garbage bag. Put a paper plate of baking foil to catch the drips under each paint can. Have a damp cloth within reach to be able to immediately wipe up drips before they dry.
Even when closing a paint tin carefully, there is the likelihood of paint splattering across the room. When you first open the can, punch a series of holes (using hammer and nails or a nail punch) in the rim’s channel where the paint collects so it will drain into the can and not all over your newly painted project.
Stretch a rubber band or tie a piece of string vertically over the paint can. Use it to scrape the excess paint off your brush. This reduces the amount of paint collecting in the channel of the rim.
Preparing your room thoroughly before painting will be worth it when you see the magic result at the end!

If you had a day to yourself, would you spend it in bed?
People often come into my clinic for fatigue, and this is one of the questions I ask, as it tells me some important information. Fatigue can be present in so many different ways, and understanding the nature of it, is the start of understanding exactly what is going on in your body.
Some people start their day with fatigue, and it improves as the day goes on, others start fine, but can hardly stay awake after lunch, and others get progressively more exhausted as the day goes on. For these people, when It’s bad enough, their ideal day is a day in bed, as they are just too tired to enjoy other activities.
If you’re sleeping through the night and getting enough sleep, this is likely to be adrenal fatigue: when you have been stressed or anxious for a long time, and your body has put the breaks on, trying to get you the rest that you need. Often at
or even before this point, people turn to caffeine, the easy fix for the fatigue. This may work for a while, then one of two things can happen, either the caffeine stops being effective, or it keeps you awake at night. In both circumstances, you wind up being tired again.
The first thing to do, is to calm the nervous system. If your body has been pushed for a long time, it’s time to slow down and have some rest. Spending time with friends, creative activities, and exercise can all be really helpful here.
Breathing exercises can also be really helpful, and if you learn how to do them, they can be really effective in a moment of stress or anxiety. There are a lot of different techniques for calming breathing, choose one where your exhale is longer than your inhale.
So, now that we’ve addressed the nervous system, it’s time to look at your diet. Sugar and refined carbohydrates will give you a sudden energy boost, followed by a
slump. If you feel like you need the boost, add protein and fats to keep your energy constant. For example, dried fruit on its own will give you a low afterwards, but if you combine it with nuts and seeds, the fats and protein will keep the energy going steadily for longer.
If you are absolutely exhausted and your ideal day would be in bed, herbal or nutritional supplements, can make an amazing difference to help you get your energy back, whilst you work on calming your nervous system.
The City of Greater Geelong has opened its 2025 Geelong Youth Survey, inviting responses from young people aged 12-25, parents, carers, those who work at education or tertiary institutions, and interested community members.
The survey, which only takes five minutes to complete, will help the City identify the key themes and priorities affecting young people’s health, well-being, education, employment, leisure, and safety.
Responses will also provide insights about the experience of young people growing up in Geelong, along with the programs, events, and opportunities young people would like to see.
Survey respondents can opt to remain anonymous.
Young people who complete the survey can also enter the competition, going into the draw to win a range of prizes, including a Nintendo Switch, Apple iPad,
Portable Bluetooth speaker, wireless headphones, Kindle, or one of five $100 Westfield gift cards.
“Whether you’re a young person, involved in education or caring for young people, we want to hear from you.
This survey only takes five minutes to complete and will help us to ensure we provide the right supports that align with young people’s priorities.”
“Filling out the youth survey is a great way to share your opinion and have a chance to win exciting prizes.
It only takes a few minutes of your time, and your responses will be a huge help to our council.”
For more information and to have your say, visit the Have Your Say page before 11:59pm on Monday 12th May 2025.
The community will be able to give feedback on two planning scheme amendments that aim to rezone land in Lara to pave the way for new housing and a business park.
Council has requested that the Minister for Planning authorise the preparation and exhibition of the proposed amendments.
Amendment C444ggee – Southeast Lara Residential Growth Area seeks to facilitate the construction of 600 homes on land at 76-156 Canterbury Road East, 705-765 Princes Highway, 775 Princes Highway and 785-805 Princes Highway.
Amendment C453ggee – Lara Business Park would see the development of an industrial and commercial business park at 705-765 Princes Highway, 785805 Princes Highway, 76-156 Canterbury Road East and 610 Rennie Street.
The land across both proposed amendments is in the Farming Zone, just 1.5 kilometres south of the Lara Town Centre and Lara Train Station. Totalling 114 hectares, the land is bordered by Canterbury Road East to the north, Princes Highway to the south and east, and the Melbourne to Geelong rail corridor to the west.
“Both sites have been identified in the Settlement Strategy, Lara Structure Plan, Social Infrastructure Plan and G21 Regional Growth Plan as suitable for development.
The documents give the community an idea of proposed lot sizes, open space, drainage, built form outcomes and infrastructure services.
The sites are conveniently located close to Lara Village Shopping Centre, Lara Train Station, education centres and health facilities and are near the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct, Avalon Airport, rail and freeway corridors, and Hovells Creek.”
“It is worth community members having a read of the amendment documents and sharing their thoughts during public exhibition on our website, which is expected to start in July.
In addition to alerting the broader community through notices in local media and on our website, the City will directly notify nearby landowners, occupiers and other relevant agencies during the exhibition period.
Feedback from the public and other stakeholders will come back to Council at a future meeting.”
Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are being invited for the opportunity for a community group to lease part of Abe Wood Reserve at 80 Edgerton Road, Lovely Banks.
With a land area of approximately two hectares and a Public Park and Recreation Zone (PPRZ) zoning, the space offers considerable potential for interested not-for-profit associations.
The successful respondent will be responsible for all required work on the site and compliance with any required planning and building permits.
The initial tenure will be three years, with two further options of three years each, and the fee structure will be determined based on the submissions received and the level of community use.
Expressions of Interest close 5:00pm on Tuesday 8 April 2025.
To find out more, submit an EOI or community feedback, visit the have your say page.
“At the moment, this part of Abe Wood Reserve in Lovely Banks is a blank, open canvas.
With two hectares, it’s a large area, and we’re excited to see what the successful respondent will do with the site, which I’m sure will benefit the communities of Lovely Banks and beyond.”
“We’re also seeking views from the community about the best uses for the site.
Even if you are not submitting an EOI, you can still make your views known by visiting the Have Your Say page before 8 April.”
Community members are invited to engage in an open conversation with City of Greater Geelong councillors on Tuesday 25 March ahead of the March Council meeting.
The ‘Meet Your Councillor’ event will offer the public an opportunity to attend an informal question and consultation session at Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct.
During the session, community members will have a chance to raise questions outside of the allotted question time in the Council Meeting. This will also provide a platform for the public to meet councillors and raise concerns specific to their wards.
Councillors will welcome questions outside of topics tabled for the March Council Meeting. Any subject on the Council Meeting agenda cannot be discussed within the ‘Meet Your Councillor’ session.
While not all councillors will be present, this trial engagement offers a significant opportunity for residents to build connections with their local representatives.
“This trial session will offer an informal environment for us to all converse freely and openly.
We recognise that perhaps not everyone feels comfortable speaking publicly in a formal environment at Council meetings.
We hope this session will alleviate these barriers and offer an alternative for those still looking to engage councillors and make their questions or concerns known.”
The Meet Your Councillor session will take place in the foyer at Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct, 137-149 Mercer Street from 4.45pm – 5.30pm.
The March Council meeting will follow at City Hall at 6.00pm.
We want to know what you think about public art and contribute to a new strategy that is set to shape the future of public art in Greater Geelong.
Public art is essential for adding meaning to our city and making spaces attractive and interesting for both residents and visitors. It aims to enhance and activate public spaces by giving expression to our stories, our people and our unique place.
In our region we have some well-loved examples of public art that play an important role in our identity, renewal of our urban areas and in local storytelling such as our laneway murals, The Newsboy (Frank Costa) statue and the relocatable ‘I AM’ sculpture currently in our Geelong Botanic Gardens.
Our new Public Art Strategy will provide clear direction for the City‘s public art program and establish processes to drive a contemporary program and vision for the next decade.
We’re holding interactive workshops for community members of all backgrounds to share their ideas and experiences on Thursday 3 April at Wurriki Nyal and at the Barwon Heads Arts Hub on Saturday 5 April.
Artists and creatives are invited to a lively discussion about the role public art can play in amplifying Geelong’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Design at Wurriki Nyal on Friday 4 April, featuring presentations from:
1. Callum Morton - an internationally recognised artist who represented Australia at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1990.
2. Natasha Johns-Messenger - an Australian/ American installation artist and filmmaker who has numerous awards including the inaugural Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture with Open Spatial Workshop.
3. James Tapscott - an internationally recognised artist with recent works including Arc ZERO: Eclipse in Lake Tyrell and Diaphanous Bloom in China.
Our libraries in central Geelong, Corio, Lara, Armstrong Creek and Drysdale will host informal pop-up sessions across various dates to encourage casual conversations.
Community members can also fill out the survey and show us what existing public art you value on our interactive map; tell us what public art you love in Geelong or beyond and share great local stories that could be explored through public art.
Feedback closes on Sunday 27 April.
“Public art is important to Greater Geelong’s character and identity.
Public art such as the Poppy Kettle statues near Cunningham Pier, The Secret playable structure at Boronggook Drysdale Library and central Geelong’s Women’s Street Art Commission Project spark interest in people of all ages and renew our urban areas.
We want to continue providing a public art program over the next 10 years that meets community and creative industry expectations, enriches our lives, celebrates who we are and attracts visitors to Greater Geelong.”
Cr Eddy Kontelj
“The City will engage with a range of stakeholders including industry experts to inform the new public art program.
Council has supported public art for a long time, but a lot has changed within the sector, the community and in local government about representation, use of new technologies and updated approaches to public art.
For Council to continue activating public spaces with artwork and tell local stories, we need diverse ideas, voices and people to be part of developing a new Public Art Strategy.”
Community members are being given a final opportunity to collect their picket from the former Rippleside Playground, which will be available on two collection dates.
The former wooden playground was constructed in 2001 and, after reaching the end of its life, was removed to make way for the new Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, a Livvi’s Place, last year.
Wooden pickets made up the boundary fence carrying the name of the person or family who purchased them following a community fundraising and construction effort.
As the playground was removed, they were retained for people interested in keeping a permanent reminder of the playground.
While people were asked to register during September and October 2024, the City of Greater Geelong is creating one final opportunity for those who missed out during the registration period.
People interested in collecting their picket who missed out on registration are invited to email comrec@geelongcity.vic.gov.au for more information.
Pickets will be available for collection at the City’s Belmont Depot at 135 Barwon Heads Road, Belmont, on:
• Wednesday 3 April 2025
• Saturday 5 April 2025.
• The collection time on both days is 8:00 am to Noon.
“The playground at Rippleside was loved by the community for many years, and these pickets offer those who generously donated at the time to retain a permanent keepsake.
“We know some people didn’t get a chance to register for their picket last year, so we’re doing a final call – if you want to get your picket, please get it touch and we’ll make it available on one of the two collection days.”
“The new Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, a Livvi’s Place, is on track to open in the middle of the year.
It will incorporate multi-sensory and nature play elements, helping to facilitate a range of different types of play for children of all ages and abilities.”
Due to some instances of vandalism and damage at the playground over the past 20 years, not all pickets that were registered are able to be accounted for.
The Women in Community Life Awards 2025 were held on Wednesday 5 March 2025 to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contribution of women to Greater Geelong.
Our annual Women in Community Life Awards celebrate local women for their achievements in contributing to a fairer, more equitable community.
The Awards commenced in 2016 and continue to attract significant interest across the region to recognise women* who lead in neighbourhoods, clubs, business or work to progress gender equity and human rights.
The UN Women global theme for 2025 is ‘March Forward’. This theme is from the UN Women Australia and reminds us that progress is not just about reflection, but about taking decisive, bold steps to turn our commitments into action.
As a part of our work to progress gender equality and inclusion, the Awards play an important role in recognising the contribution made by women and the work they do in the community.
Across industries and disciplines, women do not receive awards or recognition at the same rate as men, including Australia Day Awards and Nobel Prizes. Women often receive awards with less monetary value compared to men, and often receive less prestigious awards.

The Bellarine Railway is operated by the Geelong Steam Preservation Society, a not-for-profit founded in 1970.The society was the first Victorian preserved railway established entirely by volunteers and features a unique collection of locomotives and carriages from 3’6 narrow-gauge systems across Australia.
Trains first ran at Belmont Common in Geelong, before operations moved (1976) to the Queenscliff-Drysdale section of the former Victorian Railway’s South Geelong-Queenscliff branch line, which opened in May 1879. Originally, broad gauge, the line was converted to 3’6” between Queenscliff and Lakers Siding in time for the line’s centenary, with the remaining section to Drysdale reopened in 1980.
Today the railway is home to the Blues Train and Q Train, and offers steam train journeys, experiences and family events year-round, enhancing the rail experiences offered to visitors in the region.
The Bellarine Railway is delighted to once again support The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal with a day of scenic train trips on Good Friday 18 April 2025. All proceeds from ticket sales on the day will be donated to the Appeal, helping to provide vital care and support to children and families in need.
Passengers can enjoy a 45-minute return journey from Queenscliff Station to Lakers Siding, with trips departing hourly from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

In response to growing concerns about vehicle theft and items being stolen from vehicles across Victoria, Neighbourhood Watch, supported by RACV, has launched: How safe is my vehicle?, an online quiz designed to help Victorian’s protect their cars and belongings from theft.
The release of the new quiz is timely given new data released on 20 March 2025, from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency has revealed theft of motor vehicles has increased by almost 8,432 in the last 12 months, up 41.5 per cent. Theft from a motor vehicle also increased by almost 19,000 in the last 12 months, up 33.32 percent. Both figures represent a ten year high.
The free How safe is my vehicle quiz provides practical advice, security recommendations, and step-by-step guidance for vehicle owners to protect their vehicle, including caravans.
Neighbourhood Watch CEO Bambi Gordon said every Victorian should feel confident about their vehicle’s security.
“The How safe is my vehicle quiz puts practical prevention tools directly into the hands of vehicle owners, empowering them to take proactive steps to protect their vehicle,” Ms Gordon said.
“This initiative comes at a crucial time as vehicle-related crime continues to impact Victorian communities.”
The report generated from the quiz, includes:
• Information about the latest anti-theft technologies
• Best practices for secure parking
• Practical tips to prevent theft from vehicles
“We’ve created a valuable resource that addresses a pressing community need aimed at making Victorian communities safer,” Ms Gordon said.
The initiative is supported by local Neighbourhood Watch volunteer groups who will help raise awareness and provide hands-on guidance to community members.

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.
In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.
You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.
There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.
Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

CONSTRUCTION COMMENCES FOR NEW HOME OF LOCAL LIVE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE
Construction is officially underway on Geelong Arts Centre’s Church Redevelopment Project, marking an exciting milestone for its transformation into Geelong’s new home for live music, comedy, theatre, dance, and performance.
Set to open in early 2026, the redeveloped church on Ryrie Street will be a dedicated space for independent and emerging artists, providing an intimate, artist-led venue to nurture diverse voices and support sustainable regional artistic careers.
“We’ve listened to our local musicians and artists, and we know that access to affordable performance spaces is key to fostering a thriving creative scene. This venue will serve as an incubator for live performance, ensuring emerging talent has the space and support needed to develop and showcase their work.”
Rhys Holden Geelong Arts Centre CEO & Creative Director
The project is well on its way to fruition, committed through many generous donations to The Church Giving Campaign. In the face of rising construction and operational costs, fundraising efforts continue to support the project. This will ensure Geelong Arts Centre can deliver an affordable venue hire model for artists, along with the provision of essential operational and audio equipment before the official opening early in 2026.
By contributing to this cause, donors not only make an immediate impact but also create a legacy for the future of the arts in Geelong, nurturing creativity for generations to come.
All donations over $2 are tax deductible, and there is a myriad of ways to contribute listed on the Geelong Arts Centre website.
Together, we’re building something extraordinary.
The project team are monitoring plans closely to minimise disruption for the locality and Cultural Precinct
Access to the Geelong Arts Centre Courtyard via the ramp alongside the Church from Ryrie Street is not accessible during the redevelopment. However, you can still access the Centre and Courtyard via the main Ryrie Street entrance and through Aitchison Place. There are no disruptions to Little Malop Street.

Catch up on all the action from Geelong’s round two clash against the Northern Bullants at GMHBA Stadium
Geelong has secured back-to-back wins in a hard fought clash against the Northern Bullants on Saturday afternoon, triumphing by 30 points in their first home game of the VFL season.
Intense pressure from both sides meant that clean passages of play were hard to come by, until a sudden blitz in the fourth quarter saw the Cats pile on five unanswered goals to runaway with the victory.
George Stevens followed up his brilliant performance in round one with another stellar display on Saturday, finishing with 34 disposals and nine clearances while also recording six score involvements.
Geelong’s experience also shone through under pressure, with Shaun Mannagh (22 disposals, three goals) and Rhys Stanley (16 disposals, 38 hit-outs, two goals) both having a big influence on the result.
Geelong managed to gain the ascendancy after a tightly contested opening quarter, with immense forward pressure from Shaun Mannagh and Patrick Hughes who each laid three tackles as the Cats took a five point lead into the first break.
Jay Rantall provided the top highlight of the opening term, booting the Cats first goal of the game which was also his first goal in the Hoops.
Geelong were able to hold onto a ten point lead at the end of the first half, supported by George Stevens who accumulated 21 disposals and four clearances that opened up some much needed space for the team.
Nathan Kreuger submitted another mark of the year contender, setting up an easy goal for Rhys Stanley, while Darcy Edmends impressed through the middle of the field.
Mannagh came out hot with a running goal to give the Cats a boost at the start of the second half, later matched by Stanley with his second goal, and Paddy De Grandi with his first of the game.
Osca Riccardi and Charlie McCartin both gave solid defensive efforts against an energised Bullants squad, but Geelong found themselves trailing by one point by the end of the third term.
The Cats were able to turn the tide in the final quarter and kicked five goals, thanks to a big effort from Shaun Mannagh and milestone man Dan Capiron (11 marks, seven interceptions), who fortified the backline.
Jay Polkinghorne put the final cherry on top with the last goal of the game, as the
Cats secured an important 30 point win at GMHBA Stadium.
With two wins under their belt to open the season, Geelong’s attention will now turn to a blockbuster Friday afternoon clash at home against the Casey Demons.
The match will commence at 3.50pm AEDT and will be the Cats first curtain raiser of the season, prior to Geelong and Melbourne’s AFL match which will kickoff at 7.40pm AEDT.

The Victorian Football League (VFL) has today announced a 50-player rebel VFLW State Team squad ahead of its inaugural representative match in April, with Geelong star Poppy Schaap among those selected in the initial squad.
The rebel VFLW State Team will represent the ‘Big V’ when they take on the SANFL Women’s State Team at Alberton Oval on Friday, April 11 during the AFL’s Gather Round. It will be the first time since the rebel VFLW was established in 2017 that a women’s representative team will take the field.
Poppy Schaap has been recognised after a strong run of form for Geelong’s VFLW side, finishing third in the club’s best and fairest award in 2024.
The crafty Cat averaged over 16 disposals and seven tackles per game last year, laying 10 or more tackles on three different occasions.
Highlights from the 2024 season for Schaap included her superb performance against Carlton (19 disposals, 10 tackles, two goals) in round one, and a dominant display against Box Hill (26 disposals, nine tackles) later in the season.
Schaap will also return to the Geelong VFLW Leadership Group in 2025, set to support new captain, Mel Staunton in her first season as leader of the team.

The rebel VFLW State Team squad features many of the best VFLW-listed players from across the competition, with all 12 rebel VFLW clubs represented. Players who are injured were not selected in the initial squad, however players can still be added from outside the squad of 50 when the final squad of 21 players to represent the ‘Big V’ is announced.
The rebel VFLW State Team coaching panel was revealed last month, with North Melbourne VFLW premiership coach Brett Gourley appointed head coach.

Returning Cat, Nathan Kreuger has been selected in the 2025 Smithy’s VFL State Team squad
The Victorian Football League (VFL) has today announced the Smithy’s VFL State Team squad ahead of the clash with the SANFL’s West End State Team during Gather Round.
Geelong VFL star, Nathan Kreuger has been named in the initial 43-player squad in preparation for the 2025 AAMI State Game, which will be played at Tanunda Recreation Park in the Barossa on Saturday, April 12.
Kreuger commenced his career with the Cats back in 2019 and spent three years with the club, before moving to Collingwood in 2022 and spending a further three seasons there.
At the end of last year it was announced that Kreuger would return to where it all began, signing with Geelong’s VFL team for the 2025 season.
The key defender took no time making his presence felt, collecting 17 disposals and a game high 11 intercept possessions in the season opening victory against Sandringham.
The Smithy’s VFL State Team squad features representatives from 18 clubs across the 21-team competition. Only VFL-listed players are available to be selected in the Smithy’s VFL State Team, with current AFL-listed players ineligible.
Players who are injured were not selected in the initial squad, however players can still be added from outside the squad when the final team of 23 players to represent the ‘Big V’ is announced in the week leading into the match.
The Smithy’s VFL State Team coaching panel was announced last month, with Box Hill Hawks coach Zane Littlejohn reappointed as head coach.
The Smithy’s VFL State Team will be looking for atonement in the 2025 AAMI State Game after falling to the SANFL by 14 points in last year’s clash at Glenelg’s Stratarama Stadium.
It was the first time the Smithy’s VFL State Team had been on the representative stage since 2017 and reignited the rivalry between the VFL and SANFL which dates back to the late 1800s.

Young Cats defender Connor O’Sullivan has been rewarded for his impressive performance on Saturday night, earning the Telstra Rising Star Nomination for round two
Connor O’Sullivan has been named the Round Two Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee, following his strong performance in the Cats’ seven-point loss to St Kilda on Saturday night.
In only his third AFL game, the emerging tall defender was steady in defence, taking seven marks (three contested) and gathering 15 disposals (11 kicks, four handballs) at 73 per cent efficiency, demonstrating his ability to compete oneon-one under pressure.
Particularly impressive was O’Sullivan’s poise in a tense last quarter, collecting seven disposals and five intercept possessions in the final term to have a big impact as Geelong mounted their comeback.
Seven Cats Recommit for 2025 >
The news added to the announcement late last year that superstar forward, Aishling Moloney had signed with the Cats for another three years, fresh off her record breaking 2024 season.
The young defender was selected by Geelong with pick No. 11 in the 2023 AFL Draft, making his AFL debut in the Cats round five win over North Melbourne last year.
Featuring in 18 matches for the Cats VFL team in 2024, O’Sullivan showed great signs of development averaging over 15 disposals and five marks per game.
After putting together a strong pre-season, O’Sullivan was rewarded right away with a spot in Geelong’s round one team against Fremantle, before playing an influential role in Saturday’s clash with the Saints.
Prior to his selection in the AFL draft, O’Sullivan was a dominant junior player, awarded the MVP for the Allies in their first ever AFL National Championships - U18 Boys title win. O’Sullivan played junior football at Albury Junior Football Club on the NSW/Victoria border, and represented the Murray Bushrangers in the Coates Talent League.
Telstra, a major supporter of the AFL and its communities for over 20 years, will continue to back footy young guns as the Telstra AFL Rising Star award recognises the best young players for 2025.
A Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee will be named following each week of football in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
The 2025 Telstra AFL Rising Star winner will be awarded the Ron Evans Medal at the 2025 AFL Awards.

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.
The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.
This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:
Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.
There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.
A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.
Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.
The interactive play equipment include a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, swing, boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.
The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.
A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.
This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.
Skate parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.
We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.
Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?
Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.
We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.
The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events to up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.
The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.
Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu levaving you feeling satisfied and contest in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.
A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.
The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.
The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.
The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.
Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.
Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.
The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.
Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill onc of Geelong’s historic places to visits. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.
Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.
In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.
Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.
Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.
Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.
People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s
Located on the western edge of the Waterfront, Rippleside Park Geelong is a pretty grass-covered foreshore reserve.
Popular with locals, Rippleside is less well-known to tourists who drive past en-route to more popular areas.
The park has magnificent bay views and is particularly appealing to families with young children who love the adventure playground.
The huge wooden structure has ramps, walkways, steps, and plenty of nooks and crannies to explore.
When the kids tire of the playground the reserve has wideopen spaces to run around in. Don’t forget to bring your footy!
Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.
Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.
Other amenities include picnic and barbecue facilities, toilets, and plenty of car parking spaces.
A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.
A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.
On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.
There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.
The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.
Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.
One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.
Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.
A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.
Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.
The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.
Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.
The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.
The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.
Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.
Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.
It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.
The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.
A 19th century gaol which operated from 1853-1991 in the same conditions you see today.

The rising cost of living is putting increasing pressure on retirees, many of whom are living on fixed incomes. With inflation driving up prices for everyday essentials like food, healthcare, and housing, retirees are finding it more challenging to make ends meet. For many, pensions, Social Security, or personal savings no longer stretch as far as they once did, forcing them to tighten their budgets or dip into savings faster than anticipated.
Healthcare costs, in particular, are a significant concern, with medical expenses rising sharply. Retirees often face higher premiums, out-of-pocket costs, and the need for more frequent medical care, further straining their financial resources. Housing costs are another burden, with rent and rates rising in many areas, adding additional burden for those who own a home and for those who do not.
For those who rely on a fixed pension or savings, the combination of rising living costs and low-interest rates on investments makes it difficult to keep up. Many retirees are now delaying retirement or re-entering the workforce in some capacity to supplement their income.
With these rising costs of living it is timely that the government has risen the age pension for retirees.
The Department of Social Security (DSS) have released the rates and thresholds that will apply from 20 March to 30 June 2025
The maximum Age Pension (including supplements) will increase from $1,144.40 (single) to $1,149.00 per fortnight and from $862.60 (each member of a couple) to $866.10 per fortnight.
This will lead to a change in the asset and income test thresholds cut-off thresholds as follows.
