In 2001, when Cassa Pancho founded Ballet Black in London, she changed the face, literally, of the classical ballet landscape in the U.K. Of Trinidadian and British descent herself, Ballet Black’s CEO and artistic director made an impact by celebrating racially diverse dancers through avant-garde performances as well as her junior ballet school and outreach programs. She was honoured in 2013 with an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her contribution to ballet and, five years later, the Freedom of the City of London award. Pancho also collaborated with dance-shoe designers Freed of London, which resulted in the U.K.first collection of brown and bronze-hued pointe shoes. This year Ballet Black marks its 20th anniversary with the premiere of two new works. Choreographed respectively by Mthuthuzeli November and Will Tuckett, The Waiting Game and Then or Now continue to raise the barre on many levels. balletblack.co.uk

Montreal’s first centre run by Indigenous artists — daphne — was founded in 2019. Located in TiohtiĂĄ:ke/Mooniyang (an uncededland reference to the city of Montreal), the nonprofit Indigenous hub–cum–contemporary arts space was the brainchild of four Anishnaabe and KanienkhĂĄ:ka visionary artists — Hannah Claus, Nadia Myre, Caroline Monnet and Skawennati. Its name is an ode to celebrated Odawa-Potawatomi-Anishinaabe artist Daphne Odjig, who launched the New Warehouse Gallery in Winnipeg in the early 1970s as a celebration of Indigenous art and culture viewed with an Indigenous lens. This fall, the daphne centre highlights the next-gen perspective of up-and-coming Kaia’tanĂł:ron Dumoulin Bush — an Onkwehonwe/FrenchCanadian illustrator and visual artist from OshahrhĂ©:’on (a reference to the Montreal suburb of Chateauguay) — whose bold diverse practice combines a graphic novel edge with an electro-pop palette. daphne.art

While the Met Gala grabs the headlines as fashion’s biggest night out, the bona fide star of the show is the accompanying exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year, for its 75th anniversary, the Institute is featuring a year-long show in two parts. Opening in September is “Part One, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which showcases, among others, Prabal Gurung and Christopher John Rogers (U.S. VP Kamala Harris is a fan of his) — contemporary designers in sync with the current sociopolitical climate and, as a result, whose work reflects a closer, emotional connection to diversity and inclusion. “Part Two, In America: An Anthology of Fashion” — opens next year, on May 5. Applauding the arts in Canada is a joyful commitment and now a welcome respite, especially because of the impact of Covid-19 on creative minds and endeavours over the past year. For the first time in its 14-year history, Luminato Festival Toronto has shifted its 2021 art-filled roster of events and offerings from June to October. Festival officials are planning a series of film and digital experiences to recreate this much-loved cultural event in a way that’s compliant with pandemic protocols. The list of featured artists, performers and storytellers is still under wraps, but anticipate the rollout to be as sensorily sensational as in past festivals (Thank you, Rufus Wainwright, for your joyous 2016 revival of Judy Garland’s songbook). luminatofestival.com

Fique + Clay co-founders Sandra Rojas-Chinni and Vanessa Yusuf share their favourite sojourns. By Mishal Cazmi

Sandra Rojas-Chinni and Vanessa Yusuf met more than 14 years ago when they were small-business owners in the same neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. Rojas-Chinni ran a home goods store and café called La Mercería, and Yusuf operated the restaurant chain Craft Burger. Reconnecting years later, the two thought of ways they could work together.

Rojas-Chinni, who was born in the city of Bucaramanga, some 300 kilometres northeast of BogotĂĄ, had always dreamed of creating her own line of home goods to uplift the work of Colombian artisans and design purposeful products for the home. With that in mind, she and Yusuf took a trip to Colombia to see if a partnership could work, and in 2019, Fique + Clay was launched.

The name of the shop represents the two materials highlighted in its wares, which are designed in Canada and handmade in Colombia. Fique is a hemp-like fibre derived from a sustainable succulent plant long used by Colombian artisans to make rope, sacks and clothing, and local clay to craft contemporarystyle tableware — two materials that “always connect you to the earth,” explains Rojas-Chinni.

“People are interested and respectful of artisan, eco-conscious products,” Yusuf points out. Fique + Clay’s elevated everyday essentials have certainly garnered the attention of high-end retailers like Eataly, Holt Renfrew and Hopson Grace. “We don’t believe in saving your best stuff for special occasions,” says Rojas-Chinni. “Every moment in your daily routine should be as elevated as you could have [it].”

FIQUE + CLAY

Paying homage to the artisans of Colombia, Fique + Clay offers a tightly curated collection of modern accessories for the home. Here you’ll find rugs, baskets and placemats in a subdued earthy palette alongside pitchers and pasta bowls in warm hues and organic textures. The shop’s cofounders plan to expand their selection by exploring more natural materials. “There are so many incredible artisans from the different regions of Colombia,” adds Yusuf. fiqueandclay.com

MONO GIRAUD

On her first visit to the shop and atelier of Argentine artist and designer Alejandra Giraud in Buenos Aires, Rojas-Chinni was instantly enamoured. “It’s a huge loft space with all-natural materials — raffia, wood, linen,” she says of Mono Giraud’s earthy, yet ethereal, interiors. A hushed monochromatic palette sets off the elegant minimalist sofas, benches, pillows and candles on offer. Rojas-Chinni makes it a point to drop by whenever she’s in town. MRS. MANDOLIN

It’s “Miami meets the Aegean” at Mrs. Mandolin, a concept store and cafĂ© in Miami’s Design District. An extension of local favourite Mediterranean restaurant Mandolin Aegean Bistro, the shop purveys a wide range of wares, from rustic terra cotta platters to French basket totes. “Everything is in blue tiles. LOTO DEL SUR

Both Rojas-Chinni and Yusuf are fans of Loto del Sur, a Colombian brand of artisanal home-fragrance and skincare products focused on botanical ingredients from Latin America. The retailer has several shops in Colombia, each one designed with a local architect. “Loto is one of those places where, from the moment you walk in, you feel like you’re in Colombia,” notes Rojas-Chinni. Torontonian Yusuf’s culinary background means she’s always on the hunt for good food and knows where to find it. Masa — a 7,500-square-foot bakery and cafĂ© in a residential neighbourhood north of BogotĂĄ — is an instant draw, thanks to its eyecatching minimalist aesthetic. “[Masa] serves traditional Colombian breakfast in an architecturally unique building,” says Yusuf. Designed by Studio Cadena, which is based in Brooklyn and BogotĂĄ, the building features monolithic ridged-concrete walls punctuated by dramatic triangular windows that maximize natural light in the open-plan interior with its spotted terrazzo floors and tiered wooden seating. NOURISHING THE NEW NORMAL

From coast to coast, food is the love we all need.

Over the past year and a half, we’ve heard a lot about the “new normal” — what it means for work, what it means for travel, what it means for education. But what does it mean for food, something so essential to life that to reimagine how we consume it, physically and fiscally, could mean lasting change?

Among the many social shifts that materialized in 2020 was a super-sized commitment to community. From local pop-ups selling samosas to Michelin-star-worthy breads delivered to your door, nourishing the new normal has become the norm.

All across Canada, food makers are feeding the bellies and souls of citizens. We had the opportunity to dig into some of their stories. >

At his much-loved restaurant, Anju, Roy Oh sated many Calgarians’ appetite for modern Korean dishes, earning critical acclaim and a spot on the must-dine lists of astute food enthusiasts across the country. Oh closed the restaurant in 2019 with the intention to reopen in a new location — and then Covid-19 put the brakes on
everything, including Hwatu, a small pop-up he was about to open when Calgary went into lockdown. “I was devastated. After the initial shock and being a hermit for a couple of weeks, I knew I needed to come up with something quickly to employ my staff and to make sure I was OK financially.” Working fast, Oh launched Roy’s Korean Kitchen on April 1 last year, selling takeout versions of Anju’s greatest hits, like his coveted lettuce wraps and gochujang wings. “It was supposed to be temporary. We thought things would return to normal soon. It’s been [more than a year] now and I still can’t wrap my head around that.”

Oh also began selling sauces, kimchi, pickles and marinades, which were picked up by some Calgary stores. This summer, he opened Roy’s Korean Kitchen to the public, in a new location, with a modest patio. He sees his business model differently now, looking at a ratio of roughly one-third each of dining, takeout and product. “I feel great about what I’m doing. I see more value in it now than I did before. It’s been very rewarding to hear guests thank us for providing them with a delicious meal. I now have more perspective on what I do.”

When a young Fisun Ercan left her small town on the Aegean coast of Turkey, she was shocked by what she saw in the big-city supermarkets. “There was every food from every season and every climate in the world — all together. It was destabilizing for me.”

Back home, her father ran a modest market and was known for his love of food, so purveyors would bring him their best. Ercan learned to revere freshness, seasonality, consciously harvested ingredients — and she expressed these ideals at her restaurant in Verdun, a borough of Montreal. She was in her 30s when she opened Su — Turkish for “water” — in 2006. Ercan surprised everyone but her customers when she tied celebrity chef Rob Feenie in 2019 on Iron Chef Canada. The year before, she’d bought a 19th-century farmhouse in Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu, approximately a 40-minute drive southeast of Montreal. Su would carry on while, at Bika Farm, Ercan was ramping up her farm-to-table offerings. But the pandemic forced her to close Su and focus on Bika Farm. Dinners there are intimate experiences, with presentations on the origins of ingredients, all organic.

“Cooking with vegetables grown from seeds is immensely satisfying. Serving lettuces picked an hour before service and never refrigerated — the taste is so much better,” she says. This fall, she will introduce small-scale packaged foods and, she hopes, run in-person workshops. Of her dual role as farmer and chef, Ercan muses: “For me, they are complementary, especially when I do one and dream of doing the other. For our weekend services, I don’t have time to farm. Monday morning I’m planting in the field at 6 a.m. and it feels so good, like I’m on vacation.”

Shortly before the pandemic hit, chef Tushar Tondvalkar co-launched Urban Tadka in Vancouver as a ghost kitchen specializing in Awadhi cuisine. A ghost kitchen is not a traditional restaurant. There is no address and you can’t dine in. But you could order Tondvalkar’s incredibly aromatic Indo-Persian dishes to enjoy at home, which people did with great enthusiasm. “So it wasn’t a huge pivot for us,” he says of his adjustment to the pandemic world order. “We started a retail line, which has proven to be the more successful revenue stream.”

But even before Urban Tadka, locals were familiar with Tondvalkar’s cooking — and his elegant, meticulous plating — through his private dining-and-catering company, The Indian Pantry. For those few months before shutdown, lucky guests revelled in sophisticated immersions in regional cuisines from the Indian subcontinent. But since the shutdown, he has channeled his creativity into frozen meals, sauces and stoneground spice blends. “People are intimidated by cooking regional Indian food, and so they miss out on those flavours and experiences. Our products bring you closer to travels, to the taste, and to so much variety in flavours and dishes.”

After an R&D visit to India earlier this year, Tondvalkar returned to Vancouver just as businesses were reopening, and he had lots of new ideas. “I’m launching seasonal pickles (achar) and a delicious [Sichuan] chutney,” he says. “[Going into] retail was an unexpected turn, but it’s been the greatest thing for my company and my personal growth. Over the past year, I’ve interacted with and learned so much from other local vendors.”

PASTA FOREVER

So, you’ve just started a new job at one of Toronto’s top restaurants and a pandemic hits. And now, that job is gone before you even got started. What do you do? If you’re Jess Maiorano, you fire up your Instagram. “I did a little post saying, ‘If you’re in lockdown or quarantine or you’re just bored and need some food, I can deliver some pasta or we can do a class,’” Maiorano says. “I thought, What am I going to do for two weeks or so till this passes? Well, as we all know now
.”

She started small — a few orders a week that she’d deliver by bike — and started to play with pasta shapes and unusual fillings, then added breads and focaccias, sauces and meal kits — and changing up the menu every week because repetition makes her bored. With the help of a few friends — the city’s hippest wine duo, the Grape Witches, alerted their tens of thousands of followers — orders began rolling in and, in the span of a few months, Pasta Forever went from cool idea to viable business.

Maiorano has converted her modest Parkdale home into a miniproduction kitchen. “I have no machinery, no extruders and dies and tools. So, I play to my strengths.” She now sells out of most products — gorgeously photographed for maximum FOMO — within a few hours of posting. “I don’t mind selling out, but some customers get annoyed.” She has no intention of going back to work in a restaurant. “I would love to find a shop, do in-person classes, host monthly dinners and collaborate with different chefs and friends. But I’m happy to keep it small.”

URBAN REBOUND

Coming out the other side of Covid-19, the pandemic has changed Canada’s downtowns and left them vibrant, not vacant. By John Crossingham

Even though many urbanites left downtown when Covid-19 hit, Canada’s cities are rebounding rapidly. We asked Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Brokers how four major urban centres weathered the pandemic storm.

VANCOUVER

“Between July and October 2020, three properties over $2 million sold,” remarks Will McKitka, Senior VP Sales, Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “That’s in the entire downtown peninsula.”

The pandemic also put a premium on private outdoor spaces, such as balconies and patios, he adds. “If you’ve got a condo [without] outdoor space, it would be more difficult to sell.”

But despite a mass exodus to the suburbs and smaller cities like Chilliwack and Kelowna, there are people who prefer the upside of living downtown. “There are still the 20- and 30-yearolds who have no desire to own a house,” McKitka points out. “They enjoy the more vibrant, pedestrian-[centred] downtown lifestyle.”

Urban developers are only too happy to offer it. “There are some exciting towers that are coming and they have full amenities,” says Broker Kevin Hardy, Senior VP of Sales. “[Refrigeration] concierge services for groceries, [taking care of] laundry, child daycare [within] the building — that’s what people want. Even if it’s a one-bedroom, they want the luxury of being taken care of.”

At the forefront of such premium condos

is the Danish-designed 52-storey Vancouver House with its fleet of BMWs for residents to use, five-star concierge service, a high-end gym — and units at around $1,300 per square foot.

EDMONTON

When Covid hit, space was on the minds of many Edmontonians. “The big trend was moving not just to the suburbs, but to acreage, or rural properties,” explains Realtor Jeremy Amyotte, Senior VP of Sales. “We’d go as much as 10 percent over asking price [and] get 7 to 10 offers, which had never happened in places like Parkland County (45-minutes from downtown).”

But much of the market stayed strong during, including places near downtown. Amyotte notes a “trickle-up effect,” the quest for more acreage

and many people “rethinking their spaces,” he says. “Renters and first-time buyers were also getting into the market and that helped everybody else sell and move up.”

In the picturesque riverside neighbourhood of Glenora, the condos at West Block have been performing well despite averaging about $1 million per unit. Why? Because West Block’s condos offer more generous floor plans at a time when consumers are placing a significant premium on having more space.

TORONTO

Did the pandemic change the Toronto market?

Yes — in the short term. The effect is temporary, predicts Broker Paul Maranger, Senior VP of Sales. “In 2020 the pendulum swung in the direction of smaller towns and suburbs. By 2022 the pendulum will swing back in favour of the city. It offers things that a smaller town or suburb cannot, [like] live theatre, concerts, sports, gallery exhibits.”

In fact, only some 50,000 people moved to the suburbs. Far more Torontonians viewed the pandemic as a chance to rediscover local nature — the waterfront, biking and hiking trails — or to invest back into their homes the money they weren’t spending on going out.

“The single-family housing sector weathered the storm very well, even prospered,” reports Realtor Christian Vermast, Senior VP of Sales.

A major factor for the resiliency of the Toronto market is the multitude of neighbourhoods, which offer opportunities to transform, say, abandoned malls and rundown areas into prime real estate. One example is The Junction in the west end. “Some wonderful condo developments are going up there,” says Vermast. “Its section of Dundas Street West is filled with fantastic indie shops and restaurants, and it’s just north of one of the city’s largest parks, High Park.”

MONTREAL

Despite challenges brought on by Covid-19, available subsidies enabled some Montreal businesses and neighbourhoods to weather the pandemic well.

“I have clients who came to me and said, ‘I want to buy up all the opportunities downtown,’ ” says Sotheby’s Realtor Saguy Elbaz. “But those opportunities never really showed up. The tenants never stopped paying the rent. The subsidies kept everyone alive.”

But though many businesses in the city core held on to their spaces, some central residential areas found it difficult to cope. “Downtown neighbourhoods, like the Plateau and Griffintown, remained strong because they’re more residential. People are biking, planting plants outside,” Elbaz explains. “But the downtown core is like a concrete jungle. It was very, very quiet once the lockdown was in effect. Even

today, my properties in the $1.5-million range have not fully recovered.”

Downtown took the biggest hit, as residents in smaller studios went from being close to work and a bustling city to feeling confined.

“All of a sudden, [in] neighbourhoods up in the Laurentians, the average home that would take about 500 to 600 days [to sell] was now selling [and getting] multiple offers because the price was approachable,” says Elbaz.

As pandemic restrictions ease, Montreal’s downtown market is making a bold return.

Sotheby’s International Realty Quebec recently announced the sale of a penthouse at The RitzCarlton Residences by leading agent Liza Kaufman that set a new record as the highest priced condominium sale through the MLS¼ system in the province’s history. Demand for the YOO Montreal, the soaring 1 Square Phillips, and the ws’ 60-floor dual towers has been brisk.

Ranging from $700 to $1,000 per square foot, these condos are more expensive than most

units in the city. But with high-octane modern amenities, gorgeous common areas and innovative architectural designs, they are banking on a rebound that Elbaz sees as inevitable.

Sotheby’s International Realty Realtors ¼ spotlight four top communities for multi-generational living. By Eric Mutrie

Multi-generational homes — which expand on the idea of the core family unit by uniting kids, parents and grandparents to live together on the same property — have become a popular reaction to the pandemic’s long periods of social distancing. “Snowbirds have lost the ability to travel, people are working remotely, and families are looking to give their kids that taste of freedom,” says Melanie Clarke, an Associate with Sotheby’s International Realty Quebec. Having immediate access to an on-site support network also translates into built-in babysitters for the kids plus personal care for aging parents. “Demand for a place for the full family to gather has grown significantly,” she reports.

The biggest challenge is finding a property that can comfortably accommodate a full brood. Many buyers are having success in recreational communities like Ontario cottage country, Victoria, Canmore and the Laurentians, all of which offer extra-spacious homes, picturesque settings and plenty of activities for kids and seniors alike.

MUSKOKA, ONTARIO

According to Bryan Coxworth, a Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Broker in the Georgian Bay and Muskoka regions, the more secluded nature of life in the woods works especially well for larger groups. “The properties have a lot more privacy than what you’d get in a typical residential market,” he explains. “You

can have a big crowd and not feel guilty about making a bit of noise.”

Coxworth notes that his buyers have always been drawn to cottages large enough to host family and friends, but the new trend involves people looking for something more permanent. “A lot of them want either something they can move into immediately or something [where] they can retire in the future as their permanent residence, while still conducive to visitors and that shared family experience.” For those interested in settling in cottage country full-time, Coxworth says the sweet spot lies somewhere between comfortably rural and overly remote. Properties near Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Midland and Orillia offer many conveniences but also deliver on the waterfront lake access that allows for tranquil early morning canoeing.

VICTORIA, B.C.

Pooling together family capital can also be a smart financial strategy. “It allows people to move their wealth to the next generation and help their kids enter the housing market,” says Sotheby’s International Realty Canada Sales Associate Brad Maclaren, who is based in Victoria, B.C. In these cases, it’s particularly important to find a location that can balance the needs of a young family as well as older parents who are downsizing. “The grandparents are buying something that gives them less property, but they’re also simplifying their lifestyle by having the kids take over the maintenance,” says Maclaren. “They can [then] spend their retirement enjoying the Victoria weather, which is better than anywhere else.”

Accessibility is the biggest selling feature of many properties, he adds. “It’s very important that the grandparents’ suite be one-level on the ground floor for easier access to come and go.”

CANMORE, ALBERTA

previously limited to certain areas of town. “We now have buyers thinking, Oh, I can build a garden suite for my parents when they get older,” Vincent says. “Knowing that your parents can be right there but still not hear you talking — that’s a big selling feature.”

While Canmore’s hiking, biking and skiing are all obvious attractions for younger generations, Vincent says the town is also particularly welcoming to older residents who might be relocating from other provinces in Canada. “It has a large retired population. It’s easy to integrate into the community with the seniors’ centre and all of the arts.”

THE LAURENTIANS, QUEBEC

In the Laurentians, Melanie Clarke has been helping her buyers with sourcing, not just multi-generational homes but also full-blown multi-family compounds. “A lot of people are looking to acquire a property they can subdivide to build four or five homes for all the kids,

with outdoor common areas for everybody to share.” She credits the region’s wide range of all-ages, all-seasons activities — from mountain biking to golf in summer and, in winter, from skiing to Nordic spa baths — as a factor in convincing buyers to put down an entire family tree’s worth of roots in one place.

The Laurentians is also ideal for those in search of distinctive architecture. Clarke recently sold one family an ultra-energy-efficient, LEED-certified property with a decidedly futuristic design and, she notes, “looks like a cool spaceship.” And while it might feel like they’re living in a world of their own, they’re still a short drive from Montreal.

Ontario’s first poet laureate, Randell Adjei, raises the power of poetry. By Chris Taylor

Though one of humanity’s oldest art forms, poetry can still have a difficult time getting any respect. Lacking the visuality of cinema or the bombast of pop, poetry’s low-volume nature has often left it struggling for its rightful place at the cultural table. But that was then. Perhaps apropos to Amanda Gorman and her moving words at U.S. President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January, Ontario has elevated its homegrown poetic talent by designating Randell Adjei as the first-ever provincial poet laureate. The position, which spans two years, was established partially to honour the memory of Tragically Hip frontman and poet Gord Downie. Scarborough resident Adjei has described poetry as having “saved his life” as well as an outlet for him, a shy kid who grew up to become an author, educator and, most strikingly, a poet. Adjei’s arts organization, RISE (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere), encourages young people to express themselves through art and creativity. And Adjei’s own creativity reflects both the challenges and resiliency of his skin colour, family background and often-misunderstood hometown. Still processing the gravitas of his new-found status, Adjei reflects on what comes next.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS YOUR GREATEST DUTY AS ONTARIO’S FIRST POET LAUREATE?

My biggest duty is identifying and profiling poetry, poets and artists across the province. At the same time, I hope to continue the legacy of Gord Downie through my poetry. His legacy holds significant weight as we both have used our art for societal change. As an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly, I will also advocate for the highlighting and promoting of arts and culture across Ontario.

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE? HOW DO YOU FIND THE WORDS? I often spend time reflecting in nature at a park or grounding myself in some other form of creativity. I gather information and research the respective topics or themes that I am pursuing. I like to break down ideas into words and phrases. I like to write in solitude.

HOW WILL YOU INCLUDE UNDERREPRESENTED VOICES IN YOUR WORK?  There are many silenced and underrepresented voices in our province, our country and our world. I plan on using the

design-thinking framework to identify topics that best speak to my passion for both writing and advocacy. I do not intend to speak for all under-represented voices on the basis that I do not represent everyone’s lived experience. But I will include the marginalized, the silenced, the underserved and oppressed because that connects most to my plight.

WHAT’S NEXT?

I am working on some new poetry and will soon be working with the Assembly to develop an official website along with a scheme to promote poetry and advocate for artists.

But unlike those characters, this Equalizer series is about a single mother, Robyn McCall, whose personal and professional lives collide. It’s also told through the Black female experience.

Speaking about the role ahead of the premiere, Latifah revealed that The Equalizer is as timely as ever, given the current social movements towards ending systemic racism and increasing diversity onscreen and off. “It seemed to be perfect timing for this show, for us to be able to tell these stories ripped from the headlines and so timely now,” she says. “We knew we could tell this story in a different way — from [my] perspective and a Black woman’s

perspective in America who is a parent.”

Amplifying Black female voices is something Latifah, who is notoriously private, has advocated for and been passionate about for years. She has funded projects that allowed her to use her platform, both as an artist and a producer, with her long-time production company, Flavor Unit, which is behind film hits like Girls Trip and Beauty Shop . Following the success of the former, which pulled in more than US$140 million in profits in 2017, Latifah and the rest of the cast inked deals to return for a sequel.

And while fans await more news on that front, Latifah has a slew of other projects lined up. In addition to the second season of The Equalizer, which hits TV screens this fall, she is starring in and producing several films all directed by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) directors, including teen comedy Paper Chase, family offering The Tiger Rising and widow drama End of the Road

“We’ve been equalizing for centuries,” Latifah points out. “We’ve been equalizing from Hatshepsut to Stacey Abrams to Kamala Harris. So, it’s time you see Queen Latifah equalize on television [and film] in this way.”

Latifah is also intent on helping younger female artists of colour kick off their own careers and tell the stories that matter to them. That’s

why she launched the Queen Collective in 2019, hoping to fast-forward gender and racial equity behind the camera as well as onscreen. In addition to providing support for potential projects, the endeavour offers much needed mentorship and distribution opportunities. “Generally, a movie hires around 150 people. That’s 150 jobs that can be filled by women of various backgrounds — and men, of course,” Latifah explained to Forbes at a Tribeca Film Festival round table in conjunction with the collective’s launch. “I’d like to see my cast and crew look like the world. I don’t want to look out and just see one type of person.”

Which brings her back to the small screen. As The Equalizer gears up for its second season, Latifah is excited to represent a character who is done fighting for the 1 percent. Instead, she wants to represent the 99 percent — the people who couldn’t afford to hire a person like her character in the series.

“[The series is] something that people are going to be highly entertained by,” she notes. “They’re going to ask questions about things afterwards. They’re going to have conversations amongst themselves because of some of the subject matter that we’re tackling. And hopefully, they’ll start to say, ‘Damn, Latifah was badass!’ The ego in me wants them to say that. I hope, you know... I hope.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows framing spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Airy, high-ceilinged rooms. Natural-wood cladding on the shell. The Cape Breton vacation home built by East Coast Modern is a stylish and comfortable all-seasons retreat on the island’s rugged Cabot Trail. In addition to its striking architectural profile and glorious natural setting, however, this house is unique in another way — it was built in a factory. Specialists in luxury prefab construction, Halifax-based East Coast Modern is one of several companies in Canada that are redefining the possibilities for factory-built homes. It’s been a long time coming.

The idea of building the components of a house in one place and assembling them in another is not a new one. In the 1800s, houses and government buildings were built in Britain and packed on ships to be assembled by settlers in far-flung colonies. A century later, to quickly and inexpensively replace housing destroyed during the Second World War, some 150,000 prefabricated houses were built across the U.K., some of which are still in use today. A short while later, here in Canada, acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie designed a prefab showpiece apartment block for Montreal’s Expo 67. Comprised of hundreds of identical concrete forms, Habitat 67’s modular Lego-like design was meant to be easily replicated in cities all over the world. Sadly, the cost

of building Habitat 67 kept it from living up to Safdie’s ambitions, but he would not be the last architect to dream of prefab’s potential.

One of those advocates of prefab is Stephen Chiasson, the co-founder of East Coast Modern. Chiasson was inspired to start his company after learning about a cluster of established prefab home factories operating in New Brunswick. Those manufacturers specialized in building affordable housing for rural areas, but with soaring demand for holiday homes along Nova Scotia’s picturesque coastline, Chiasson saw an opportunity to put their expertise to broader use. “Why,” he wondered, “isn’t anyone taking advantage of prefab to build really nice homes?”

A decade later, business is booming at East Coast Modern, which offers versatile modular floor plans ranging from 1,250 to 2,000 square feet, and the ability to customize almost every aspect of the design. Not only are his homes architecturally beautiful, they are also significantly easier and quicker to construct than traditional houses, Chiasson says. Much of the reason for this comes down to the advantages of building in a factory versus building outdoors. With all of the trades and equipment in one place, he’s able to stay on schedule and on budget, working 12 months a year regardless of weather and tradesmen’s schedules — both huge advantages when building in remote parts of the Maritimes. “Cost and time are the two

biggest concerns for new-build clients,” notes Chiasson. “If you build a model that gives you both cost certainty and time certainty and [also] elevates the design while doing those things, I think you have something of value.”

Meanwhile, in Toronto, enterprising architects and designers are finding similar ways to use prefab’s advantages in a variety of urban settings. Summerwood Products, for example, is a specialist in prefab cottage “bunkies,” whose business shot up 250 percent during the pandemic. Summerwood’s bunkies, it turns out, also make perfect backyard studios and home gyms for Torontonians needing a little extra square footage for working (and working

out) from home. Easily customized and quickly installed, Summerwood’s Mini Oban, a Nordicinspired backyard cabin, has proven particularly popular in the city.

In Toronto’s east end, R-Hauz recently completed a prefab pilot project with major implications for the city’s housing crunch. Located on Queen Street East, in Leslieville, R-Town is a six-storey apartment building with retail on the ground floor and five storeys of housing above it. Constructed from wood panels built in a factory just outside of Toronto and assembled on-site in a matter of weeks, R-Town is intended to offer a solution to Toronto’s “missing middle” — the lack of modern, purpose-built housing for people

who don’t want to live in a high-rise and can’t afford to buy a single-family home. “We’re in a housing crisis, and prefab isn’t the only solution, but it’s an important part of the solution,” says Catherine Krug, R-Hauz’s product director.

With large windows, exposed-wood surfaces and green roofs to absorb rainwater, R-Town represents a new kind of housing that’s efficient, sustainable and far quicker to build than conventional mid-rise apartments. And with nine more projects in the pipeline across the city’s east-west corridors, R-Town may be the first of many. With prefab more than a century in the making, it seems that its long-predicted future may finally be here.

FASHIONING A FUTURE

3 industry trailblazers share visions for fashion’s future.

If nothing else, the last 18 months of upheaval has taught us that the future is anything but predictable. Long before the pandemic, though, the fashion system was already broken. Traditional retailers failing to resonate with young customers, luxury fashion operating at an increasingly unsustainable pace, media’s never-ending shifts rendering it unstable — there are a few cracks in the veneer of a glamorous industry in need of reinvention. As the fashion industry picks up the pieces, three visionaries in its midst offer up visions of what its future might hold.

ON THE FUTURE OF STORYTELLING

“We’re always going to need to document fashion in a way that can exist in the real world, [one] that you can touch and feel,” says Antoine Gregory, a multi-hyphenate — stylist, consultant and Twitter fashion voice via his handle, @BibbyGregory. Last year, Gregory founded Black Fashion Fair to preserve and document Black fashion, style and culture. The digital magazine was a culmination of his viral 2016 Twitter thread, “Black designers you should know,” which highlighted talents that were under-represented on the New York Fashion Week circuit. Today, the Fair is an editorial source for photo shoots and videos, as well as an online shop featuring limited-edition collaborations with aforementioned designers. Offline, it hosts community events and workshops. “I try to give people who want to know and learn about Black fashion and Black

designers as many resources as possible,” says Gregory. “I’m making space for us to contribute to the canon of fashion. My ambition is that we have ownership over these narratives.”

As traditional fashion media goes through a transition, Gregory’s multi-pronged approach represents a more nuanced vision of what the future of storytelling could look like. “I think the idea of the critic has changed tremendously and will continue to [change],” he predicts. Gregory cites podcasts and platforms like Twitter and YouTube as the future of fashion criticism, something that got lost in the era of clickbait and listicles. Clubhouse — a recently launched, invitation-only audio chat app — has also fostered important conversations, like the “Politics of Dressing” discussion he co-hosted on how fashion has played a key role in American history (one buzzy touchpoint was U.S. VP Kamala Harris’s February 2021 Vogue cover).

to people like myself, who have built strong followings and have strong backgrounds on the subject,” says Gregory. “I think we need to give the next generation opportunities to fill spaces in traditional media, which absolutely needs to be challenged but also needs to exist.”

Just like the future.

TELSHA ANDERSON ON THE FUTURE OF SHOPPING

The week North America largely shut down due to Covid-19, Telsha Anderson was set to open her first boutique in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The social media consultant–turned–retailer had spent months perfecting the spot — a unique, diversely stocked destination focused on indie brands scarcely found elsewhere in the United States. Her store, T.A., is a fresh take on the recently maligned multi-designer boutique, filling the gap that stores which used to be game-changers — like Opening Ceremony, Barneys and Colette — left when they shuttered in recent years. These stores, once seen as oracles of fashion newness, had fallen behind in the era of e-commerce and Instagram being as good a platform as any to showcase your brand.

But in launching her store, Anderson was steadfast in her belief that fashion lovers still wanted to shop “brands [that] are intentional about their designs and how they present their take on luxury,” in-person. There was a tremendous amount of risk associated with Anderson’s venture, but when she opened shop in July 2020, it paid off. “I knew that if people were going to shop, they were going to want to somewhere with a story attached to it,” she says.

resistant luxury brands) during the pandemic, Anderson sees the future of retail in “experiential and intentional shopping” — meaning, more pop-up shops and more “ways to interact with clothing and encourage conversation,” she explains. “I think we’re seeing a shift towards intentional buying and transparency from brands,” even if that transparency means, she continues, “we don’t have enough diversity on our boards but we’re working to do better — that’s where we’re going.”

VANESSA CRAFT ON THE FUTURE OF SHOPPING

Every new social media platform brings with it a promise to rewrite the rules of influence. And while Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have each cycled through the requisite growing pains for corporations (in this case, fashion and luxury conglomerates) and dominating channels that were once purported to belong to the people, TikTok offers something radically

decentralized. “As we know in fashion, the way that it’s always been is that the powers that be anoint or dictate what it is that they see is important for us to wear, or the overarching messages that they want to share,” says Vanessa Craft at TikTok Canada. “And the most exciting thing for me to see is [how users are] creating and driving stories that aren’t coming from anywhere other than an authentic communitydriven conversation.”

As the director of content partnerships at the increasingly popular app, Craft oversees content strategy, acquisition, growth and management of the platform’s community of publishers, public figures and creators, many of whom have become famous overnight for their hot takes on Fashion Week, thrifting and sustainability. And contrary to the polished images we’ve become accustomed to seeing in fashion, these creators are beloved by their Gen Z and Millennial fan bases for their authentic, stripped-back approach. “The next generation of what people want in fashion is much more real and authentic,” notes Craft. As brands dip their toes into collaborating with these creators, the ones “that lean most into the true groundbreaking rising stars who are reinventing the way fashion stories are told are the ones who will have the best longevity and the best connection to relevancy,” says Craft.

The pandemic helped to hasten our further

espousal of life online, with the rise of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) pushing towards a future where fashion isn’t even about physical clothing but, instead, outfits for gaming avatars or social media filters. And while this might be wild to comprehend, Craft compares it to our adoption of downloading music or reading magazine websites as well as the real thing. “The most interesting part of all is that we have this generation that has never known anything different than having a screen attached to everything they do. Everything about their persona is online,” she says. “They will be the ones to determine what works for them.”

Art stars Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller connect with their audience through disconnection. By Rhonda Riche

The simplest way to describe the art of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller is to call it “sound installation.” That simple definition, however, implies a whole lot of complexity. This Canadian artist duo’s interactive installations envelop their audience and are also conceptually engaging, so much so that the concepts are artwork in themselves.

More context on the 25-year collaboration of husband-and-wife Cardiff and Bures Miller was provided in 2001 by architecture critic Michael Kimmelman at The New York Times. Reviewing their mini-theatre installation piece, titled The Paradise Institute , at the 49th Venice Biennale, he wrote: “Part sculpture, part video art
[a] comic tour de force of psychic misdirection commenting loosely on current art’s fungible definition and on the exploitative artifice of

cinema while, for the people willing to wait in the long lines it attracted, providing cheerful mess-with-your-head distraction like a highbrow amusement park ride.”

Now 20 years later, Kimmelman’s commentary still stands when describing what it’s like to experience the couple’s immersive projects.

Cardiff and Bures Miller were art-school students at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, when they first met. ““There was a synergy when we started dating,” Cardiff recalls. “I was doing photolithography and George was painting but also planning to go to film school but when we’d hang out we’d experiment with media related stuff.” They were “always doing stuff like audio, video and film recordings and mixing it all together,” adds Bures Miller.

And though pursuing solo projects at the

time, the two shared an interest in exploring the narrative as art. “We were both interested in creating an environment you could walk into,” says Cardiff. “[But] we never thought about collaborating. We were just helping each other out.”

It was Cardiff who first gained recognition in the international art world in 1991, for Forest Walk , the first of her audio walks. Developed during her residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, that project and subsequent audio walks are, she notes, similar to audio guides. Viewers are handed an audio player and headphones, and a recording steers them through a narrative of events that occur along a route. Layered with pre-recorded background sound effects, the audio playback generates the sensation that those sounds are happening in real time and in the participants’ actual environment.

“The first audio walk taught me a lot about how we can only perceive reality through our senses and how audio can influence how we see the world,” Cardiff explains. The fictional world of recorded narratives and how they play against real-life physical sites offer alternate realities that feel dreamlike or disturbing.

The couple’s first real collaboration was The Dark Pool , a 13-minute mixed-media installation produced in 1995. The setting was a dimly lit room cluttered with a dizzying miscellany of objects — thrift store furniture and rugs, piles of old books, a vintage typewriter and radio, a mannequin’s head, tangled electrical cords. As you enter the space, you experience a sense of suspended animation. Walking across the room activates the acoustic component of the art piece. Snippets of pre-recorded conversations play out via speakers flanking a wooden chair and initiate a feeling of excitement, unease even, as if you’re eavesdropping on ghostly banter.

Meanwhile, Cardiff reports that more artistic

endeavours are in the pipeline. “We’d just done a Super 8 Feature [film] and it opened up new ways of thinking
 how we could use time based media in more non traditional ways.”

The duo’s immersive subversive art seems to run parallel to the evolution of virtual-reality and social media platforms that rely heavily on audiovisual innovation. But Bures Miller thinks otherwise. “People compare audio and video walks to augmented reality, but it’s really about overlapping realities
 I don’t know how much we’ve changed from the beginning. Sometimes we leave an idea for 10 or 15 years and come back to it because technology has changed and our abilities have changed.” Cardiff chimes in. “[But] we’re still interested in making a quasi-narrative and how it affects the audience. We are trying to connect intimately with the audience.”

That mix of the past and present, as well as examining how viewers perceive those memories, is what makes their artwork so powerful. And they continue to innovate and surprise. “In our art, we explore a lot of different genres,” says Bures Miller. Along with the audio walks and installations like The Dark Pool , the couple have exhibited site-specific works around the world, including at The Met Cloisters gallery in Manhattan (2013) and at the contemporaryart festival Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany (2012). And when they represented Canada at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001, they garnered the Premio Speciale and the Benesse Prize.

While the technology utilized in their walks has since expanded to include video, the goal is to transport the audience to alternate realities through sound. “Every idea has its medium,” notes Cardiff. “[In our work] we get talking, and then the technical control systems or formats follow.”

If there’s one factor that has impacted Cardiff and Bures Miller’s narrative, it’s the pandemic. Having a conversation with the audience is central to their practice, and lockdowns have posed hurdles to that interaction. “During Covid time, we’ve had a lot of projects cancelled,” admits Cardiff. And so, the artists turned to creating smaller works.

“We did have some ideas seeing things through interactions with Zoom and we [were] thinking of presenting audio and visual online, but [that did not] happen,” she says. “We feed off the audience’s and our physical interactions with the artworks and that’s pretty hard online” says Bures Miller.

Currently, they’re working on a new show scheduled for this fall at the Chelsea Luhring Augustine gallery in New York. For this exhibition, they are creating an extension of The Dark Pool , which they never thought they’d revisit, but their still-media projects during lockdown made them realize there’s still plenty of space to explore within Dark Pool . The new work sounds like a meta-memory of the original.

“We are trying to connect with memories, but it’s a different audience now. The structure is different,” says Cardiff. “We’ve used what we’ve learned from technology to create a surrogate relationship between the audience and the works.

“We don’t like to get bored,” she jokes, “so we end up inventing the wheel in a lot of works.”

Which, it looks like, keeps on turning.

How the unrelenting growth of NFTs has shifted the art machine into a new cultural moment.

There’s a scene in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s that sums up how non-fungible token art, aka NFT, is currently being perceived en masse.

Midway through the novella, Capote’s protagonist, Holly Golightly, introduces her upstairs neighbour, Jack, to her talent agent, O.J. The two men converse and try to decipher the undecipherable — their mutual acquaintance, the elusive Ms. Golightly. Her agent poses the question — “Is she or isn’t she?”— meaning Is she real or is she a phony? The conclusion on her authenticity does not come without complexity. The men unconvincingly and exhaustively decide that Golightly is both. She’s real and she’s a phony. She’s a real phony.

NFT artworks are, for the most part, real pieces of art, but their reputation precedes them — they cannot be displayed at home. NFTs are images, but not physical paintings or

photographs showcased on canvas or in frames. Rather, they are digital creations bought and sold, not at a gallery but on a blockchain domain, which is used as an information vessel and a payment address for digital wallets.

The art world is often a place where authenticity is debated. It is, by existence, a world unto itself, a cultural congregate that creates its own universe and language out of the practice of smoke and mirrors. Simulation, replication and reinvention of life — communicated via both curator and creator — is par for the course in any exhibit, yet nothing in the past few decades has confounded the mainstream media like NFT art has.

According to Forbes, NFT artworks are easy to define. “They are like physical collector’s items, only digital
. [I]nstead of getting an actual oil painting to hang on the wall, the buyer gets a digital file.” Time magazine offers another distinction. Think of NFTs as “com -

puter files combined with proof of ownership and authenticity.”

However simple both definitions seem, there are rules to what collectors own and when they own the NFT artwork. For example, NFTs can have only one exclusive owner during a certain time frame, and the data connected to the NFT verifies ownership. This data acts as transfer tokens between the creator and the owner (both of them can store specific information inside the artwork itself). A physical signature on an NFT art piece isn’t an option, and so, it is replaced >

with an icon or an alphanumeric code within that NFT’s metadata.

So, where does one find NFTs? They’re on blockchains and website domains which are, by the minute, getting better at curating artwork beyond canvas and physical installation. For digital artists such as Shaylin Wallace, who is based in Wilmington, Del., and a recent BFA graduate from Salisbury University in Maryland, these domains have been a lifeline to an art career that couldn’t be dreamed up, let alone developed, five years ago.

“You could say blockchains are like digital galleries, these tiny centres of freedom because they offer these great opportunities for artists like me to basically get paid our worth,” Wallace explains. “The fact is, it is difficult to be a digital artist and get compensated and acknowledged properly. Painters can sell their original paintings and get paid a good amount, but [for me] as a visual digital artist with assets on my computer rather than in a physical form, that value is harder to identify and NFT sites and blockchains are making it easier.” Wallace believes there is little difference between

what she sees as a paintbrush and canvas and, say, her mediums of choice, which are graphic design applications, such as Photoshop. “I’m not the only one thinking this way,” she notes. “The rise of NFTs has proven that the way we think about art is changing fast.”

How fast? Well, according to a recent report by ArtTactic, a leading market analysis firm with more than two decades of experience surveying the global art industry, there has been a 511-percent increase in online-only sales over the course of 2020. This epic spike in sales and interest has motivated a new generation of art collectors, makers and digital native-art professionals to continue breaking new ground and become globally recognized without the aid of a gallery or international press. A prime example is a record-breaking event this past April, when Sotheby’s sold approximately US$17 million worth of NFT artwork at its first-ever crypto sale and auction of works by the digital artist Pak.

This radical transformation in the art world is a welcome one for Wallace. “My work isn’t owned by one single gallery. I have the right to

sell and exhibit various pieces in different parts of the world on blockchain sites. This whole new wave of art is giving power back to artists who wouldn’t necessarily have the chance for visibility,” she says, noting too that unlike at a traditional gallery, she dictates when and where her work is viewed.

“As a Black female artist, I can definitely say from experience that most major galleries have favoured white male artists. NFTs take you out of that old world system,” Wallace continues. She explains that many BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists have been instrumental in pushing the envelope. “Many artists on the fringe or who are disenfranchised or ignored, those who would never have gotten a chance for their work to be recognized, have now become leaders in a way that has never happened before.”

The very idea of curation — that is, the way artists are being presented and promoted — is also getting a makeover of sorts.

A fledgling Vancouver-based company, Ethos Multiverse Inc., has deemed itself “a creator-first NFT platform” that allows artists to build their own digital universes. Founded by a half-dozen >

The next challenge for NFT creators, collectors and digital gallerists is how to avail themselves of the powerful lure of the art fair. The end goal:

art investors — including Todd Towers, Ethos’s director and a long-time art consultant, and Matias Marquez, a fintech (financial technology) expert — this platform is currently working with both emerging and established NFT artists to help them cast a wider net and connect them with potential art buyers who are still figuring out how NFT art works.

“The new collector, like the creator, is starting to write the rules against the old guard. They don’t necessarily need an XYZ gallery to tell them what to see. Artists also can dictate the terms of self-sovereignty in this way,” Towers points out.

“Our goal is to make the exchange extremely simple for the right side of the adoption curve,” says Marquez, referencing Ethos’s mission. “People like my mom and my aunt, those who have never held cryptocurrency ever before, need to have a place to go to easily purchase and trust that they are interacting in a safe way.” This summer, Ethos assisted Winnipeg-born artist Bradley Harms in creating a sold-out bidding war for his Triple Fold (2021), wherein a single edition of said piece was “dropped” once a day for 10 days. Well versed in how collectors’ behaviours have changed through the years, Towers views art collections as portable vaults that allow collectors to sell pieces like playing cards..

“I can walk around Art Basel with my phone and have my wallet with NFT digital collectibles on [it],” says Towers. “And when I meet [other collectors], while I’m having a glass of wine, they can see that I’ve acquired a limitededition work and I’d be able to sell it to them on the spot.”

The next step in the evolution of NFT art is figuring out a way to conquer what has been unconquerable in the past — the ever-powerful lure of the art fair. Art Basel, Frieze, Scope and

NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) have proven to be the events where next-level shifts in the art market take place.

This year, Parisian gallerist StĂ©phane Lebenson is launching Deep, a brand-new AI-focused art fair scheduled to hit London, October 13–17, and then head over to the San JosĂ© Museum of Art in Silicon Valley in 2022. Deep was born to “present experimental and pioneering NFT art in ways it has yet to be showcased,” notes Lebenson. “In other words, we are looking at merging that physical experience with a digital [one], so that external feeling and internal [feeling] can be experienced.”

Lawrence Weiner, Jack Elwes and the French art collective known as Obvious are just a few of the announced headliners in the lineup of talent Lebenson has culled for the Deep event.

“The artists here are disruptors,” says Lebenson. “They are unapologetic futurists who often get their own authenticity questioned, but they don’t care. They realize NFT art and AI art is like a new world colliding with a dinosaur. NFT art is punk rock, and the traditional art system is a dusty classical ballet. All we want to do is show people that there is more out there [beyond] the ballet.”

NICO WILLIAMS

While on a recent commission to create an art piece for The Hospital for Sick Children, sculptor and beader Nico Williams lost count of the number of beads that went into completing the final sculpture. He assumes it took around 200,000 to finish Monument to the Brave, a commemoration of the stories of the children who have received treatment at SickKids hospital over the years. The massive sculpture is perhaps one of Williams’s more formidable feats — he had a team of four other beaders to help him — but even his smaller works reflect the same wondrous magic in his storytelling.

Williams is from the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, located close to Sarnia, Ont., and is based in Tiohtià:ke (an unceded-land reference to the city of Montreal), where he recently completed a master’s degree in sculpture at Concordia University. Vibrant explorations of Ojibwe and Anishinaabe teachings and oral histories are present in his earlier works. Now he’s turning miscellaneous objects that he finds, like lottery tickets and rolling papers, into larger-than-life beaded sculptures. There’s a fluidity to his art pieces, movement that comes from the mixing of colours and the melding and manipulation of beads into otherworldly geometric shapes.

TAMARA ALISSA

The catch-all bowls created by Tamara Alissa may be the perfect embodiment of her intuitive art. In these delicate bowls, which toe the line between form and function, the clay appears to be in motion, undulating like an unfurling shell. Alissa’s ceramic pieces seem to pour out of her, the connection between her and the malleable clay intentional and spiritual. She began her ceramics practice after being invited to a drop-in class five years ago and fell in love with the unpredictability of the craft, enamoured with the way a piece never came out of the kiln exactly as expected.

Now Toronto-based, Alissa was born and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the textures and shapes of her childhood are emerging in her work. Vague memories of her life in the Middle East, plants from the garden in her childhood home, the mosques in the family compound — these memories make their way into her art through the drawings and etchings on her bowls, vases, plates and mugs. Each piece is a vessel, a glimpse into a distinct snapshot in time, an archive of a moment in her life, bringing her past into the future.

JUSTIN YONG

Artist Justin Yong creates quilts that feel at once familiar and out of reach, comforting and out of step — their stark, contrasting colours and shapes and the haphazard stitching exhilarating. In an art-historical sense, his work might be reminiscent of the paintings of Mark Rothko or Piet Mondrian’s penchant for geometric shapes.

Yong, a photographer based in Toronto, started quilting at the beginning of the pandemic, when studios shut down and he suddenly found himself with ample free time. His mother, an avid quilter herself, taught him over FaceTime and he began experimenting. He also found inspiration from a group of quilters in a small town in Alabama, called Gee’s Ben, who have been quilting for generations and whose work has been likened to modern art.

Yong’s own use of abstraction and improvisation is outside of the confines of fine or folk art, resulting in quilts that start as simply colour palettes and end up as vivid high craft.

FIN SIMONETTI

Vancouver-born, New York–based Fin Simonetti loves to play. Her marble dog busts and stained-glass portraits ensure that her work is constantly evolving, just as a person keeps changing. A trained painter, Simonetti views the expression of her art through craft as a natural extension of her vision — a place where she can experiment with tactile materials like glass, calcite, pink marble and alabaster.

Whether it be an oversized stained-glass bear trap that counters the perceived fragility of the material or the skillfully hand-carved stone appendages she creates by bending the material to her will, Simonetti’s work defies simple classification. The pieces rest easy on gallery floors, left to their own devices with lots of room to breathe. But in the right environment, they take on new life and meaning and add a sense of uncanny whimsy. Her most recent exhibition, “My Volition,” at the Matthew Brown gallery in L.A., juxtaposed her stained-glass panes and intricate sculptures, eliciting a communal conversation among the diverse elements of her practice.

WONDEROUS WANDER

Prince Edward County’s newest simple and stylish getaway — Wander the Resort. By Chris Johns

It smells like marshmallows in here,” my sixyear-old daughter exclaims from the living room. I’m still unpacking the car, but she’s already checked herself into our cabin and is busy rifling through the welcome amenities, her brother hot on her trail.

The sliding glass doors that lead into the cabins at Wander the Resort — Prince Edward County’s stylish new waterfront retreat and the only Canadian property to make the 2021 Hot List at CondĂ© Nast Traveler — are left unlocked and guests walk in without stopping at reception. This absence of a formal check-in process began

as a response to Covid protocols but has proven so popular and efficient that it will remain a fixture at Wander the Resort from now on.

There is something liberating about just pulling up and walking into your vacation home, and it’s easy to feel like you’re arriving at your own place, something that owner Shannon Hunter very deliberately set out to convey when she was developing the property. “We really wanted to tap into the nostalgia of those family vacations you had as a kid, when you went camping with your family or you rented a cabin on the water — that smell of the campfire, that relaxed feeling

that’s still exciting [now]. I think all of us have those memories growing up in Canada and we wanted to make sure you feel that way here.”

While that vacation experience might be universal for Canadian kids, very few likely occupied cabins as chic and well appointed as those at Wander. Its 10 Nordic-inspired cabins with black exteriors and minimalist whitewashedpine interiors are tricked out with such modern amenities as sustainable locally made mattresses, organic linens and heated floors. Each cabin has its own kitchen, of course, with Miele appliances, proper chef’s knives and bamboo fibre

plates from Montreal-based YoungLUX. In the bathrooms, with their egg-shaped tubs, the bath amenities by Sunday’s Company — a highly regarded plant-based apothecary situated in the nearby town of Warkworth — elevate the experience. Sunday’s Company also collaborated on the resort’s bespoke scented candles, likely including the cedar-vanilla aroma that my daughter thought was marshmallows.

Walls are decorated with evocative, moody landscapes by local mixed-media artist Christine Flynn. Guests are encouraged to tap into their own artistic side, as the cabins are stocked with old-school Polaroid cameras and film. Even in these times of instant photo gratification, watching those Polaroid images come to life feels as science-fiction-futuristic now as it did long before smartphones were ever a thing. This too is by design. “We made a conscious effort to step away from trying to be Instagrammable,” Hunter explains, “and actually just try to be unforgettable, so you can remember the way that you felt when you were in this space, as opposed to having a really exciting loud kind of wall to take a picture in front of.”

The grounds are no less polished. Lowimpact landscaping means tall tufts of grass that need little watering grow to a full six feet in height, providing additional privacy between cabins and, because they stand tall all year round, will continue to rustle in wintertime. Glassed-in geodesic domes are scattered around the property where Hunter plans to offer private dining, wine tasting or stargazing experiences alongside a menu of outdoor activities that range from ice skating in the winter to beachside yoga in the warmer months. Raised vegetable beds, planted in collaboration with local celebrity gardener Carson Arthur, will provide guests with fresh herbs and whatever else they care to pick in season.

Wander’s clubhouse will serve as the resort’s social hub with snacks and a bar, allowing guests to engage in more gregarious experiences or not, if total privacy is their preference, or they can opt for a combination of the two. The large L-shaped pool with its shallow kids’ end and separate area for the grown-ups will also be a strong lure for visiting families.

The children have made their way down to the shore as my wife and I watch from our deck, glasses of Huff Estates sparkling wine in hand. Overhead, a flock of geese are honking loudly in unison as they fly to their next destination. We are staying put. Here, there is no need to wander.

When Ernest Hemingway rolled into Paris with the Allied forces retaking France in 1944, the first place the swaggering war correspondent set out to “liberate” personally was the Hîtel Ritz, a favourite haunt of his going back to the 1920s. Upon arriving at the legendary Place Vendîme retreat, however, he was told that the Germans had long since departed — and also that he couldn’t bring the firearm he was carrying onto the premises. Nonplussed, he reportedly returned the weapon to his Jeep and made for the bar inside, where he famously racked up a tab for dozens of dry martinis.

Hemingway’s excesses aside, his desire to restake his claim to a treasured hotel after a lengthy absence is one that many of us can relate to right now. As much of the world emerges, in fits and starts, from a year or so of forced hibernation, the march through an echoing lobby to an oversized suite offering 24-hour room service sounds pretty good. To be sure, the trendy and new will always have their place, but it’s hotels combining luxury, familiarity and a comforting sense of permanence that are likely to resonate with the widest swath of travellers over the next while. Canada has a wealth of such old-school charmers within

its borders, from urban grande dames, such as the Ritz-Carlton Montreal and Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, to coastal and mountain resorts as gorgeous as their natural settings.

Even committed scenemakers are ready to check in.

“I love Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise in Alberta,” says Allen Chan, a co-founder of DesignAgency, a Toronto-based design studio internationally renowned for its ultra-contemporary hospitality spaces. “You just cannot beat its location, the view of the lake, its breathtaking surroundings. When I get back there, what I look forward to doing most is some real skiing. I’ve been stuck here in Southern Ontario for too long!”

Pamela Mullinger in the East Coast can relate. When the media exec in New Brunswick and her British-born husband, Ian, need a break from running the acclaimed magazine EDIT, they bundle their young family off to The Algonquin Resort, a sprawling 132-year-old pleasure palace in the picturesque town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea. Among the Algonquin’s draws are a full-service day spa, an 18-hole golf course with panoramic views of the surrounding seascape, and an indoor pool replete with outdoor water slide accessible via an ornate spiral staircase.

“We love the Algonquin as a family getaway as much as we do taking our office team there for Christmas celebrations,” says Mullinger, who helped launch the award-winning Monocle magazine brand in London before returning to Canada seven years ago. “I grew up in New Brunswick and have been familiar with the resort since I was a child. When friends visit from England, we make it a point to go and stay there.”

Of course, nostalgia alone doesn’t account for repeat visits. Many of Canada’s best heritage properties go to great pains to remain fresh, alluring and modern. — resulted in a major overhaul of its 233 rooms and suites. At the same time, the resort’s new executive chef, James May, is doing “a fabulous job” in the kitchen, Mullinger points out.

Meanwhile, Fairmont Le Chñteau Montebello — the rustic-style resort in the Outaouais region in western Quebec, often described as the biggest log cabin in the world — hasn’t rested on its laurels either. To mark its 90th birthday in 2020, this landmark all-seasons retreat, which was, until 1970, a private club for the international rich and famous (among its members were Lester Pearson, Princess Grace of Monaco and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands), undertook a $17.5-million refurbishment of its guestrooms and lobby. All of the updated rooms plus 14 new suites were unveiled last year, while renovations to the public areas will continue post-pandemic. A new wildernessinspired kids’ playground — one of the many outdoor amenities across 120-plus hectares of old-growth forest, hiking paths and ski trails — also opened in June this year.

“As we reclaim our social lives, the isolation that individuals collectively experienced has created a real desire to reconnect to our most grounding factors — community and a strong sense of place and time,” notes Jennifer SĂ©guin,

director of marketing at Fairmont Royal York.

In the past, when Canada hosted international events, it had often done so in its landmark hotels. The first G7 Summit on Canadian soil, for instance, took place at Le ChĂąteau Montebello in 1981, and two subsequent gatherings, in 2010 and 2018, were held respectively at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ont., and at Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu in La Malbaie, Quebec. Now, it’s Canadians themselves who’ll be flocking to their own resorts’ elegant lobbies, sumptuous suites and breathtaking natural settings, says SĂ©guin.

Personally, I’m here for it. I plan on hitting Fairmont Royal York Toronto’s spectacular new lobby bar, inaugurated only a few months before Covid-19 took hold, as frequently as I can. Anchored by a soaring double-height clock tower, the retro-chic spot, called Clockwork, was reimagined by New York City-based Rockwell Group as an ode to rail travel past (transit hub Union Station is across the street) and features Pullman-car-style banquettes.

While I won’t be ordering dozens of dry martinis à la Hemingway, I will raise a glass (or two) to the undisputed queen of Toronto hotels. And I’ll be thankful, as I have been in the past, that it’s in my hometown.
