ouch is one of our five senses but experts consider it the first and most important; the rest of the senses are just complementary. Touch enables us to recognize the texture, shape or volume of the objects around us. We can also experiment the sensation of cold or heat. And all this we can feel through our skin, which insignificant as it may seemis the largest organ we possess. We have been learning all through our lives; we can all remember those children games when blindfolded- we were able to tell our friends apart by feeling their faces with our hands. And that cold impression when touching snow… it caused attraction and disgust at the same time and it shocked us to see our hands going intensely red… Not less surprising were our first steps on the beach sand: tickles and insecurity when our feet sank and disappeared in it and when we unexpectedly recovered them at the touch of sea water. However, this mysterious world of hidden sensations had a dangerous side to it and we could finally get to understand the common warning expression “Do not touch”. Fire was one of these monsters, which behind a warm appearance attracted us in order to mark us as one of its own. There was always, nevertheless, a hug or a gentle touch from one of our “protectors”, soothing our pain. Now, though time has passed, we are still in need of this contact to realize that we are not alone.

hroughout the time gap between the second and the third project meetings, the Portuguese Comenius team have been engaged in several interesting activities which are going to be described in the coming pages. We hope they will show you, dear reader, how hard and how much fun we had while doing these tasks.

The questionnaire

T

he following text shows the analysis made to the answers of the Portuguese students to the questionnaire on Touch. We have fiftyseven answers to the twenty questions of the questionnaire. We decided to divide the twenty questions into four groups. The first group is about “Touch and Sight” and is composed by questions number one to number four. Another topic is Recycling, questions number five to number eight. The largest group is related to lifestyle, and includes questions number nine to number sixteen. Questions seventeen to twenty are in the last topic that is about cultures and the importance of touch to a person's social, communicative and emotional development. “Touch and Sight” With the analysis of the graphics of the first theme we can conclude that most of the people questioned can easily feel the structure of the objects they touch but when confronted if they either prefer to look at or to touch them the results of each opinion are similar, the people that really chose one half chose touch and 3

half the look; either way when something looks attractive sometimes people want to touch it immediately. Also, when people want to buy something they give the same importance to its look and structure. Recycling The second topic of questions is related to recycling. Everyone appears to know that recycling is important because all of the inquired people say “Yes” when they are confronted with whether recycling is or not important. But, in spite of knowing that recycling is important, the ones that recycle the rubbish every day are more or less the same that never do such thing. Furthermore, most of the people only recycle sometimes. Almost everyone seems to be informed about the recycling plant/center that exist in our area and some students defend that the ones that do not recycle should be punished, but the majority say that they shouldn't be punished or they just don't know.

Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal

Lifestyle With the third group of questions we can conclude that the people questioned lead a healthy lifestyle and don't go often too fast food restaurants. Almost everyone practises sports (if not very often, sometimes) but not usually in the morning, and more than half of the people sometimes get tired. Also, almost everyone blames the lack of time as a reason for not practising sports. A large majority think that a healthy lifestyle is connected with our mood.

people that actually gave their opinion about it the majority think that these two issues are related. Most of the people also think that touching is very important to communicate with other people, and that touch has physical and emotional benefits for people of all ages. Specialists state that touch is the first sense to develop in the womb and the last sense to leave in old age. They also say that human touch is essential to the health and well being of human's emotional, physical and mental development. In fact, touch is so vital that the psychotherapist and author Virginia Satir stated that human beings need four hugs a day for survival, eight hugs a day for maintenance and twelve hugs a day for growth.

Cultures and personal social, communicative and emotional development. With the last group of questions we get a notion of the importance people give to human touch and their opinion about the touch in different cultures. Most people recognize that different cultures have different ways of greeting each other through touch. Concerning the lack of touching and violence amongst children, from the 4

Recycling workshop

M

any, many years ago our world was in balance but the increase of pollution caused by the human beings goes against that balance and is ending it. The only solution is to make the pollution decrease as much as possible, and one of the ways to achieve that goal is to recycle and reuse everything possible. With this idea in mind we decided to make a recycling workshop and combine the useful with the pleasurable, helping the environment by recycling and reusing old materials to make some new daily objects to offer to the other schools. The activity was a success, everyone enjoyed making the objects while working as a team and using old and no longer needed materials to do it. In the end we were very happy with the final result: we made five types of objects such a bag, necklaces, cell phone holders, bowls and magic wallets. And it's really like they say “one

How to make necklaces with recycled material: We used pieces of clothing of old shirts, blouses with the desired size and then we sewed the buttons and closed the strips of cloth leaving only an open entrance. Then, we had to leave some space between the different buttons, so that we might tie the necklace at the end. When the selected button was sown in the cloth, we made a knot and then we put another button, then we make another knot and placed another button until we reached the desired size of the necklace. After having done this, we made a final knot in order not to allow the last button to get out and to finish we tied the loose ends of the piece of clothing and the necklace was ready. 5

The cell phone support The cell-phone support is made only with recycled material. The necessary items are tissue debris and old bottles of shampoo. The procedure to make these supports is really easy. With an x-act or a scissor we cut the bottle and in the back we cut a circle in order to put the mobile-phone charger; we need to cut off the tissue the same size as the bottle and pasted all. At the and we should dry with a hair dryer.

Recycled bags To create these recycled bags you need some scissors, a giant advertising banner, some string, and a pressing machine. First, you must cut the plastic banner into several pieces with the same shape; then, using the pressing machine glue the two pieces. Afterwards, you should make two holes on the superior corner. Finally, pass the string through the two holes and tie with a knot.

Stylish homemade bowls In this workshop we learn how to re-use materials to make new useful ones. One of the activities was to make a decorative bowl made simply by pieces of cloth and white glue. We ended up with amazing bowls and knowledge to use materials and to have some fun while doing it. Steps: 1st Fill balloons with air and then put them in a bowl. Draw a line on the balloon following the limit of the bowl in order to get the limit on which you will start working. 2nd Cut the cloth into tiny pieces. Use different pieces of cloth and cut multiple forms in order to get a more diversified look.

4th Cover that cloth in white glue and then apply another piece of cloth following the previous. 5th Repeat the process until you get one layer and then do the same so you can end up with three layers. 6th After completing the three layers start putting more pieces of cloth on the top of the layers. This will be the support for your bowl and so it must be more solid so it can stay balanced. 7th With a hair dryer carefully start drying the balloon so it can become solid. 8th Enjoy your stylish home-made bowl!"

3rd Following the line you marked at the beginning with a brush apply white glue and then put a piece of cloth on top of it. 6

Magic wallets

Workshop of touch This workshop aimed to test the attention of the human being to guess through touch the common objects used in the daily life to put ourselves in the position of a blind person.

You're going to need some scissors, glue; some pencils/pens, a mold of the face of the wallet, recycled material like cardboard or a tetra pack package (packages of milk, juice...), some pieces of cloth, and some colourful laces Step 1: Draw and cut four pieces of the molds in a tetra pack package. Step 2: Glue it to a piece of cloth and leave a small edge. If you want, you can dry the glue faster with a hair dryer. Step 3: Make small and spaced out cuts on the edge and then glue the remaining cloth to the mold. (You can also use a hair dryer). Step 4: Repeat steps no. 2 and 3 with the remaining molds. Step 5: Now it's time to make your wallet. With two molds, placed side by side, glue the laces like it's shown in the picture. Then, glue the remaining molds above the others to cover them and close the wallet. You now have your magic wallet! 7

Before the experiment started, the students and teachers were required to leave the room. This was to prepare the room with items that were part of the activity. Then, the pupils and the teachers, already blindfolded, touched the objects and tried to guess what they would be only through their size, shape and texture. If they guessed the object, they were awarded 1 point for the correct answer; if they didn’t, they would follow to the next object without accumulating any point. After the activity was over, we concluded that there was more difficulty in identifying the most common objects than the other ones.

VOLUNTEERING

E

veryone has needs; some people have more needs than others. Luckily we have people that are willing to give their free time and devotion without receiving anything in exchange to help them, by doing some volunteer work. Volunteer work is often described as an altruistic activity to improve the quality of other people's lives. Our school has been involved in volunteer activities for a very long time and there are some people doing work as volunteers so to find out more about what moves them to that type of activity, what their opinion about it is and the type of work they develop, we decided to make the following questions to two students that participate in this type of activities and the teacher responsible for this volunteer work. Comenius team: How did the opportunity and the interest for you to do volunteer work appear?

The students: Our Religion teacher, teacher Telmo Machado, introduced us the idea of doing some volunteer work, because he has being doing it with his students for years and with great success. We started with small things like collecting food in supermarkets for the ones in need, but our will became bigger when our teacher took us to the centre João Paulo II, an institution of social solidarity for people with severe disabilities.

Comenius team: Can you tell us about your experience in Centro João Paulo II? What did you have to do there?

The students: Our day would usually start quite early. We were in different wings (the center is divided into wings), but the tasks were more or less the same. In the morning, we had to make the beds, clean the floor, put the waste out. We also had to go to the laundry and place there the dirty clothes and pick up the clean ones. At lunch time we had to help the patients with their lunches, because some of them couldn't eat by themselves. After that we would clean everything. At dinner time we would do the same thing. The afternoon was the best part, because it was the time when we were only with the patients, and we dedicated our attention only to them. This was the best experience that we have already had, and this year we are going to repeat it. It's a wonderful experience that really moves us. We are happy all day long, and we feel so much cherished by them and we realise that our presence makes them happy; the simple fact of being there can put a smile in their faces. We learn a lot with them and in spite of being different, they are happy in their own way, even happier with our help. 8

Agrupamento de Escolas de Castelo de Paiva - Portugal

9

Comenius team: What is your advice for the people that want to start doing volunteer work?

Comenius team: What made you get involved in this type of activities?

The students: It's a unique experience that everyone should experiment. You only have to be yourself, use what you know to do better to help them; even if it looks too simple, it can help someone's life, by making someone happier. We could say it's like a lesson for life. We learn a lot, live experiences totally different that make us grow as a person. Every person likes to receive something, but for us it is a lot better to give them something than receiving something from them, because in a certain way they give us everything we need without even noticing, a simple smile or hug is worth a lot more than anything else. For us, volunteers, the only thing that matters is to make them feel well and happy, because when we leave and hear something like “don't go” or “I'll miss you” it does break our hearts but it makes us realise how important we are for them.

The teacher: At a school level it all happened during a study visit to a n i n s t i t u t i o n f o r s e ve r e handicapped people in 2003. The will, the curiosity and the persistence of a sensitized student dragged me to this project. Comenius team: How do you evaluate the students' interest and participation?

The teacher: Very positive. Some students found in these activities of volunteering and solidarity the tool they needed to develop their capacity in this field. It also created the opportunities because they embrace these projects with strong conviction and much effort. Comenius team: What is the patients' reaction?

The teacher: In the view of patients and workers where these activities are developed this bet had very favorable results and the number of students engaging in this activity is very positive. It is an activity that with the time has

created bonds of cohesion and familiarity that will hardly go aw ay. T h e s m i l e o f s o m e (volunteers), and the smile of the others (workers and patients) have created a contagious strong bond, because in its basis there is a lot of work and dedication. Comenius team: Projects like this one require what type of efforts, at personal and financial level?

The teacher: The volunteer work that these students do is basically characterized by physical effort that involves mainly a huge desire to help, and by helping others, they personally become fulfilled and complete people that only those who live this experience are able to reach.

F.I.V.E. Final Game

This is the poster that clearly shows the work that was done by the Portuguese Comenius team...

T

he F.I.V.E. Project is extremely connected with the human senses and multiple intelligences, and this game is a great way to develop them. Both, the teachers and the students, are carefully producing the game in different areas. In order to do a good job, the students were divided in several groups and each of the groups wrote a story, but at the end Portugal only had to present the introduction. The scenarios and programming are two of the most important activities that we are developing; the students and the teachers are working together so that at the end the game could be a success and all the effort from all F.I.V.E. members could be rewarded. Each one of us contributes with something that can go from drawing to programming skills. At the end the only important thing is the compensation and pride felt for creating the F.I.V.E Kingdom of Senses game that is from us all. The Portuguese Comenius team

TOUCH WORKSHOP

COMMENT ABOUT THE GRAPHS

A

ll my class went to the computer-room of my school to answer some questions of the questionnaires on the Comenius Project.

As always, we were greatly surprised because of the different questions, and we had to stop to think about the different options in order to choose the right one. The questions, about the sense of touch, in general, have been very interesting, because of the fact that we never give a second to think about them, but it is an enriching experience to do it and we all agreed on that. Most of the questions treated topics of things that we do in our daily life, for example “When you touch an object can you easily feel its structure?” perhaps none of us has stopped to think about that, and there's the point that made it difficult for us to answer. We had a good time; the same that in all the activities on the Comenius Project: enriching and interesting.

11

T

his was a very interesting activity developed within the sense of touch.

Our class was separated into three different groups. There were three tables in different places of the room where we had to go blindfolded. Then, the teacher took something from the table and gave it for us to touch and pass it on to another classmate. When the teacher told us to finish, we had to say what we thought the object was aloud. First, we were given liquids to touch: there was water, oil among others. After that, we touched fabrics like silk or cotton and finally we tried plastic, glass, aluminum and so on. We had a very funny time and we learnt that we tend to use only the same sense and that we are scared to use others.

things that we could get easily and cheaply. We had never done such a thing but in two hours we were able to finish so I encourage you to try and make your own basket.

W

e did an activity which consisted in making a basket with old newspapers so that we could use our sense of touch. First of all, we had to cut the newspaper into two horizontal cuttings. Then we had to roll the newspaper around a thin stick and then take out the stick from the inside of the newspaper. We had to make more or less sixteen or fifteen rolls. When we had finished with that, we took six rolls and we made a cross with them, three in a horizontal and the other three in a vertical position. After that, we had to cross them (one up the other down and so on until we finished). When we had the basket done, we painted it and then had to wait a few days until the basket was completely dry. And this is how we made our own basket with old newspapers and 12

WORKSHOP ON MASSAGES

W

e started up the activity closing our eyes and trying to know who our partner was. We were all in a big circle with our hands together and moved from one side to another. After this first warm up activity, our bodies were warm and we sat down and put a blanket over us. The person who was going to give us a massage put her hands down while the other partner had to close his eyes; then, we got a massage on our face and hair. Meanwhile, we could listen to relaxing music. Then we massaged our partner in the shoulders and we tried to find their heart rate. We had a really good time.

DEBATES

A

ll along this term we have been practising the Parliamentary Debating style.

We were given some motions and, organised into groups, we had to debate on them. In Parliamentary debating lessons we have to follow very strict rules and we are given a role that we have to defend weather it is our opinion or not. We consider debating a good activity as it helps us to organize our minds, to think of a variety of arguments and to improve our English. The Spanish Comenius team

arly January our teachers announced that we (Sahar, Sabine, Kesiena and Luca) were the selected students to represent The Netherlands in Poland. We were really excited but we knew from the start that there was a lot of preparation to do. We started to have our 'little meetings' after school hours on Tuesdays. During the first meeting the students who went to Romania told us about their trip and informed us about what kind of preparations we had to do. We had to find out about recycling in our neighbourhoods. While we were thinking about how we recycle objects in The Netherlands we realized that we didn't know a lot about this subject. So we started doing research about how people in The Netherlands recycle and we found out that there are a lot of things that you can recycle: paper, plastic, batteries, glass and even diapers! When we knew what we could recycle we started to look for where we can recycle old and used stuff. There are a lot of places where you can do that. Every neighbourhood has at least one recycling point. One of the other requirements for us to go to Poland was to make something using recycled materials. Our first idea was to take an old (soccer)ball and some cheese crusts. We wanted to cover the old ball with the crusts. It seemed like a good idea because both cheese and soccer represent the Netherlands. Unfortunately it turned out to be a disaster. The 15

cheese crusts wouldn't stick to the ball. We even tried using latex but even that didn't work. After two weeks of preparing and having no results we set up an emergency meeting. We brainstormed for 50 minutes straight. Sabine came up with the idea of making Ipad/ Iphone cases, and so we did. We used all kinds of different materials. Such as old towels, clothes and buttons. They turned out much better than expected and even use them for our gadgets. Below you will see a picture of the work done by the different countries.

Berlage Lyceum - The Netherlands

W

e were also told that we were going to have a debating session in Poland with a statement related to the topic touch. Sahar and Luca who attend to a bilingual schoolalready had some experiences with the British parliamentary style debate. But for Sabine and Kesiena it will be the first time ever to debate in English. We decided to practice with the debating after school. Our English teacher was so kind to show and explain us all about a debate using the British parliamentary style. This didn't only help Sabine and Kesiena to understand how it worked but it also helped Sahar and Luca to debate even better even though they already knew the structure of this specific debating style.

the results we got, like: 88% of the people we asked think it's important to recycle rubbish. ! But not everybody does that. Only 42% of the people recycle daily. ! Out of the 57 people 40 people said they think there living a healthy lifestyle. ! And only 7 people often go to fast food restaurants. ! Only 11% said that they never sport. ! In total 70% of the people said that they sport every morning or at least once in a while. ! 36 people didn't think that they and their friends were examples of typical couch potatoes. The last part of the questionnaire was about communicating through touch. 80% of the people agreed on the fact that cultures all over the world have different ways of how they greet each other through touch. ! And 58% of the people think that touch is very important for the development of communication, social and physical skills. ! And 74% of the people think that the human touch has physical and emotional benefits for people of all ages.

ike the other country's we also did a questionnaire, these are some of the results: ! 29% of the people we questioned always want to touch something when it looks attractive, most of the people 68% sometimes want to touch something when it looks attractive. 79% of the people think that is important that something looks good and has a good structure when they buy something. ! We also asked some questions about recycling and living a healthy lifestyle. ! We could conclude the following things from 16

We are writing this online magazine while we are in Poland. Each day, one of us writes about what we did that day. Underneath follows our report: Sunday 14th of April 2013 (written by Sabine Knoflook, 4vwo) On Sunday we (Kesiena Ubiebi, Sahar Afzal, Luca Ruijs, Sabine Knoflook, Mrs Hagenbeek and Mrs Aghina) went to Schiphol with our suitcases and family. We said goodbye to our parents and went to the airplane. First we flew to Frankfurt and then to Katowice, Poland. It was a nice flight. After the flight, we went to our host parents. The name of my host girl is Karolina. She is very nice. Her parents are also nice. When it was time for dinner, we ate some salad and chicken wings. After dinner we played some games like lying and war. Then we had to go to our bed. Monday 15th of April 2013 (written by Sabine Knoflook, 4vwo) We had to go to the school with our host girl or boy. The meeting with the nine countries was at the school and we had to show the activities that we had done in our country. We presented a poster and explained the audience our work done. Our work consisted of practicing debating about European issues, recycling materials and making two ipad covers and an iphone cover and also explain our analysis of the questionnaire about 'touch'. When we finished all the presentations, we went to the gym where we did some ice breaking activities. We also saw a capoeira demonstration (picture). After that we had a walk through the city Dabrowa Gornicza where we live with our host family. We saw a church and we went to the Mayors house. We went to the balcony at the Mayors house and they told us a lot about the city, for example that the city has the second largest steel factory in Europe. After that we had a treasure hunt game. We walked around lake Pogoria and we had to answer some questions about Poland and make a kite. We had wonderful weather! We noticed that Dabrowa Gornicza is a very sportive city. A lot of people were walking, running, skating and biking in the park next to the lake. Maybe that is the reason why our guest school, named Zespol Szkol Sportowych, which is a sport school, is situated here. We will ask this tomorrow. After that we went to our home and had dinner. With the Dutch team and some other students we had a nice walk through a park. After that we went home and went to our bed. 17

Berlage Lyceum - The Netherlands

Tuesday 16th of April 2013 (written by Sahar Afzal) Today we made a big trip. We went to Cracow. We were exited because the sun was shining very bright! Cracow was the formal capital of Poland. It was not a very long drive. This was the second day we were with all the students. We noticed that we already came along better with them. We drove for about one hour. When we arrived we got a guided tour in English. At first we walked around the castle. Our guide told us a story about the famous dragon. Shortly: The king said that the person, who could beat the dragon, could be the king and marry his daughter. A shoe polisher beat the dragon by smartness. But he did not want to merry the daughter of the king. This became a very famous legend of Cracow. Everywhere on the streets you can buy little dragons. After the castle we made a tour through the old city. We got a lot of information about the churches. After a few churches we lost our interest and talked with other students. This was very helpful because now we know that in Cracow, 95% of the population is catholic. 40% of the population goes actively to the church. That's why they have a lot of churches. At about twelve o'clock we went to one church. It was huge and very nicely decorated. Just after twelve o'clock the bells rang and a window opened and showed someone with a trumpet who played a famous song. After having one hour of lunch we went to the castle. The castle was build more than 700 years ago. The castle had a lot of kings. One of the first kings had an Italian wife. That's why a large part of the city has Italian architecture. In the castle the art was from the (early) Renaissance. On the walls were wall carpets with a lot of colours. After visiting the castle, we had 2 hours of free time. We visited a few shops and bought some souvenirs. At 17.30h, we came back to the two buses and returned to Dabrowa Gornicza. It was a nice day and we are all looking forward to tomorrow! 18

Wednesday 17th of April 2013 (written by Kesiena Ubiebi) Today my host girl dropped me of at a museum. She didn't come along because she had a swimming championship. In the museum we learned about the history of the area we were in. After this we went to coalmines for a tour. The tour was scary and funny at the same time. There were a lot of sound effects so you would get the feeling as if we were working in the mines. After the tour in the mines we went back to the school. At school we (Sahar, Sabine, Luca and me) taught some people a card game. It was really funny to play. After like two hours it was time to debate. I was in a team with a guy from Poland. I never debated in English so I wasn't sure if I could do it but it went good. We didn't go through to the next round but it was a fun experience. When all the groups were done with debating we went to a basketball game. I have never been to a basketball game so I didn't know what to expect. The game wasn't really interesting and the team we supported lost but it was fun. After the game I went home with my host girl. She didn't win the championship but she also had a nice day. Thursday 18th of April 2013 (written by Luca Ruijs) This morning it seemed a little warmer than every other morning. The plan for today was to go to an old mountain village named Ustr贸n and visit Auschwitz. Originally Ustr贸n is a 'skidorf'. Driving closer to this little village we came past a lot of snow, which felt really weird because the sun was shining and it was about 25 degrees. We walked around the town for a bit with some Polish, Greek and Spanish students. Every day the connection between the Comenius students grew stronger and stronger. We even tried some traditional cottage cheese. It tasted like the smell of 'knakworst'. It was by far the worst thing I ate in Poland. After tasting this 'cheese' I could actually appreciate the dinner I got at my host family every night, which I had to get used to. After about two hours it was time to get in the bus and go to Auschwitz! I had a lot of mixed feelings about this. I was excited, curious and sad at the same time, especially because I have family that was killed in Auschwitz during the Second World War. 19

Berlage Lyceum - The Netherlands

Auschwitz was nothing like I expected it to be. It was split into two parts. The first part was named Auschwitz and the second and biggest part was named Birkenau. Auschwitz was a place for the 'workers' most of them survived for about two to six months and then starved to death or were killed by the SS. Approximately 800 people tried to escape Auschwitz (not Birkenau) but only 200 succeeded. However that didn't mean they were really free, most of them were arrested or captured within a month and sent back to Auschwitz for public execution. In the old 'buildings' where the workers lived were some items of the people who were killed in Auschwitz exhibited. This exhibition included suitcases, the hair of the woman who were shaved at arrival or after they died and even some children's clothes. The only moment when I really got emotional was when I passed the part with the clothes of the children. The weird thing was that these clothes belonged to little kids from 6 months to two years old, children who couldn't do any harm but were just murdered because of their religion. In this part of the area we had a good English speaking tour guide. At the end of this area we visited one of the remaining gas chambers. It felt so strange and awful to walk on the floor where millions of people died. After this we went to the Auschwitz we 'know', Birkenau, the second area. This is the place where the trains arrived and people were sent to the working camp (Auschwitz) or to the place we think of when we talk about Auschwitz. This area only exists out of wooden barracks. These barracks were originally designed for horses. In every barrack there was room for 50 horses but during WWII there were 400 people 'living' in every barrack. For me it was the first time I actually heard of Birkenau. I have always learned in school (and from my parents) that Auschwitz was the place where the barracks were located. I didn't even know that there were two areas. The living conditions in Auschwitz were far better than in Birkenau. There were less people living together in Auschwitz. The sanitary conditions were better and the 'houses' were made out of bricks and not out of wood. I was still very shocked when we left Auschwitz and Birkenau but I am very happy that I got the opportunity to see how these people spend their last hours, days or months. Even though this was a very touching and emotional trip I had a really nice day and got along very well with my fellow Comenius students. 20

Friday the 19th of April and Saturday the 20th of April (written by Kesiena Ubiebi) While I am writing this it's Friday morning. Today we are going to visit a recycle centrum in the neighbourhood. After that the people who went through to the finals during debating are going to debate for one last time. Sahar is in the finals so we hope she will do well and win the debate! When everybody is done with debating we will have our last activity, the cultural evening. This evening every country does something to represent their culture like singing their national anthem or doing a folk dance. We (the Dutch girls) are going to do Old Dutch games. I think it's going to be fun and I feel really sad about the fact that this is our last night in Poland. I am really glad that we had the opportunity to do this and meet the people that we met.

These pictures were inserted on Friday evening; Sahar was one of the two best speakers of the debate!

QUESTIONNAIRE ON TOUCH

I

t's our third meeting, and now it's time to talk about one, if not the most important human sense - touch. It helps us to feel and examine our surroundings, and all material things, it also helps us to feel much closer to others. And we use this sense not only with our hands, but with every single part of our body. We feel grass with our bare feet, warmth of other person while hugging him. But is the sense of touch really that important in our lives? As there are almost seven billion people, there are almost seven billion opinions, so it was really interesting what our students and their family members think about it. And the results are positive, as only 13% of participants can't feel objects structure easily when touching it. 54% prefer examining new things by touching them. So yes, as most people think, feeling our environment is very important to us. And talking about our environment... how much do we care about it? As said before there are almost seven billion people in our little planet called “Earth”. For a second now, think about how much trash do you “make” every day. Now multiply it by seven billion. That's a lot of trash, isn't it? Imagine the impact it does to our planet. But there is a way to decrease it, by recycling. But after analyzing questionnaire results we were a bit shocked. 63% of participants said that recycling is very important, but only 29% recycle

everyday, even when half of them are sure that they have a recycling plant or centre nearby. Does their laziness get in the way? Lack of time? As we have already talked about cleaning our environment, why not to talk about cleaning ourselves: unwanted fat in our bodies which doesn't help us not to get cold as we have clothes for that. But let's not forget couch potatoes, although these days they aren't that common, and some types of gamers took their place, and we're not talking about all people that enjoy playing video games, but people that on a sunny summer day, when all their friends are having great time at the beach... would rather spend their time playing “Call of Duty”, “League of Legends” or any other game of their choice. So how much do we move, and how healthy is our lifestyle? Results showed that 45% of participants are sure that they live a healthy lifestyle, and only 7% never practise any kind of sports, which means that although not many people live healthy they still care about their health. In conclusion, the sense of touch is very important to us as it helps to know and discover the world around us. We should take better care of our environment being more active in recycling. It is not enough to be just aware of something, we must take actions to lead a healthy way of living so that to enjoy life.

Through touching to better communication

I

t is quite hard to imagine the world without one of the senses if you are lucky to be healthy and have them all. It is even harder to imagine how connected to each other the senses are without experiencing it by yourself. Our Lithuanian F.I.V.E. team had a great chance to prove this to ourselves during our activities on touch. The activities were brought up to us by our P.E. teacher and introduced as a proof that touch is truly important to one's life. It included eyeblinded activities where with our eyes closed we had to guess the things that we are touching. Activities seemed really easy at the beginning when we were told what we'll have to do. They weren't so easy when it came to actually participating! We noticed that it is very hard to understand what you actually are touching when you can't see it. This proves the idea of touch and sight being very close and dependent on each other. During the activity we not only touched things we also had a lot of fun. Our first task was to 23

recognise one of our friends by only touching his or her face, hair, shoulders. This task was a complete „blast“ of all the activity we laughed a lot and enjoyed it very much (who wouldn't enjoy seeing how friends are trying to recognise each other or even the principal and teachers by touching their faces and hair?...) Nobody was unhappy either when we got to touch the food and recognise it without tasting later we could try some of it too! Also we had fun working together as a group all eyeblinded by only touching a rope we had to make up a number 5 out of the rope... The number itself was „a little“ not right, but the good emotions we got from doing that were priceless. Our activities on touch were the most fun through almost all project so far. We laughed, we talked, we had fun together, we learned and experienced new things at the same time. In all of our students' opinion this was the best

Reusing Things

T

hese days everyone knows about recycling and reducing. One of our project F.I.V.E. tasks this time was to create a thing that made out of used materials. We all know that the third sense that we're exploring in our project is touch, so this task and the topic were very connected to each other, which made us to come up with an idea much easier. After many long discussions, even „try outs“ (we each had to think of, create and bring one thing that could be chosen to bring to Poland) we finally decided we'll be making a picture frame. Our frame originally was described as „multifunctional“, which means that it could be used as a regular picture frame, a frame for small pieces of art or as an educational material for little ones. All sides of the frame are made of completely different materials which all feel differently soft and smooth or hard and rough. The making process itself was a little hard and complicated. We had to change our idea, to start over, to learn to work together, to panic a little, and to work, work and work. The result is an interesting, nice and original picture frame that we all like. All the good and bad emotions were worth it!

thread, many plastic spoons, a candle, matches (for the candle to lit), a lot of pencils and a pencil sharpener. First of all, we'll be doing the basis of the frame. Take the carton box and cut off one side. Then cut off the middle so that your picture could fit in the middle . You can make the frame round or square, whatever size you want. Secondly, take your magazines and loot away papers until your frame will be glued with the magazine pages on both sides of the frame. Then take more of the magazine pages. Crumple them and glue on one of the four „good“ sides of the frame. Next step: take fleece threads. Wrap the yarn around two fingers about twenty times. Then tie up in the middle of wrapped root ball. Take it off your fingers and cut the ends.

We'll need: a big carton box, a glue stick, mod podge, hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, pair of scissors, old magazines or newspapers, fleece 24

Priekule ieva Simonaityte Gymnasium - Lithuania

There you have your perfect fluffy ball. Make as many fluffy balls as you need. Take the plastic spoons and the candle. Hold the spoon about 10 centimeters above the flame until the plastic starts to soften. Shape it with your fingers. Glue the shaped spoons with hot glue on the third edge of frame. Finally, take your pencils and cut them with a jigsaw in about 4 centimeters length pieces, sharp them with the sharpener until the top is pointed and glue them. Here we go! The frame is done and ready to be used for as many ways of usage as you can think of. Don't forget it can be an original present to a friend or just a great wall decoration! FIRST AID WORKSHOPS

What is a debate?

I

n our school we have special first aid workshops with professional instructors. Thanks to such presentations we know how to help people, how to handle and take care of an injured or sick person in case of an emergency. We can help an unfortunate victim instead of remaining a mere onlooker. The picture below shows how we should check the person if she/he is breathing or not.

I

n our school we have an active debating society.

If he/she isn't breathing, we should at once start lead resuscitation. Here we can realize how important are senses in this situation. The sense of sight, touch and hearing enables us to recognize if the person is breathing and if she/he needs help.

Our debates involve single-member teams or teams that include several students. Usually we have four teams that regularly debate on interesting and sometimes even controversial topics. The goal is to come up with a good argument in a short amount of time. Students are encouraged to read about current events and issues to prepare for debates. A judge or a panel of judges assigns the points based on the strength of the arguments and the professionalism of the teams. One team is usually declared the winner. 26

Questionnaire

W

e were also doing the questionnaire and these are the most interesting answers. The results of the questionnaire are very interesting but not so surprising. We are at sports school so we practise sport, different disciplines every day for many hours. We know how to lead a healthy lifestyle and how to keep fit. Do you lead a healthy lifestyle?

Creating useful items

W

e had to create different useful items using various recycled materials and objects such as plastic, glass, metal, paper, etc. Each class in our school concentrated on one idea and prepared one type of a unique useful item. Our “new” old products were: piggy banks, jewellery, vases, candlesticks, various containers and many others. By creating new products and giving them new functions we are trying to make people more conscious about recycling and environmental issues. 27

he Polonaise is one of the world's most beautiful social ballroom dances. This walking-type dance is perhaps the best known by the World as having some connection with Poland and or Polish Culture. Its most permanent features have been (and still are), a walking done by any number of couples of men and women. As a walking dance, it is usually done at a slow tempo. Most modern Polish researchers hold that the dance is native in origin and identify it with a still existing dance called the Chodzony. Polonaise is a widespread dance in carnival parties. Polonaise is always a first dance at a studni贸wka ("hundred-days"), the Polish equivalent of the senior prom that occurs approximately 100 days before exams.

POSTER CREATION

O

ur poster has similar aspects, such as submitting our country tradition, and for it we used recyclable materials with different textures.

For the Dobrogea region, in which our home-town Constanta is, we present to you 2 little boats made out of paper, relating to the fact that this town is an open Black Sea port. Another specific tradition is in the Oltenia region, in which peasent's wifes would weave traditional floral themed belts, so for this we decided to present to you a textile weaving. Transilvania is another Romanian region, that is a mountain predominating zone, so we decide to create a tree made out of hard re-used cloth. Also, the sheep and whistle, both representing grazing a traditional occupation of Romanian people. Moldova has a specific Christmas tradition on which people, wear different types of antropmorphic masks.

RECYCLED MATERIALS OBJECT- ROMANIAN DRESS

F

or our next activity, we decide to recycle used materials like, potatoes protective bags and useless marbles to create a traditional type Romanian dress, in which my college Andrea was dressed in. The dress that I will describe is recyclable. The model of this dress is on one shoulder and the material used is bubble wrap, that we find in packing fragile items. On the dress we applied some different materials were recycled. Over the right side of the dress and around skirt, we identify pieces of potato sackfuls painted purple and on the covered shoulder we see different beads.

ORIGAMI

O

rigami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD at the latest and was popularized outside of Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami. Paper cutting and gluing is usually considered kirigami. The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The best known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (16031867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using non square shapes to start with. The principles of origami are also being used in stents, packaging and other engineering structures.

DEBATING!

OTHER ACTIVITIES!

O

or our other activities, our highschool decided to involve younger and eager students to find out more about the touching feeling and how good and well it can be put to good use. So we decided to try and deice the quality of products just by touching them.

ur English teacher decided to start debating with us more, more and more often, training ourselves to speak more fluently and organise our thoughts, words and speeches in a better way. For your debating activities we decided to submit recycling, pollution and nature protection subjects.

DANCING!

F

or our next activity we decided to learn more about our own country and how to dance popular, traditional and specific Romanian dances. So a kind colleague of ours, to whom we would like to thank, helped us learn more about the Romanian traditions and dances. We got in training and learned pretty fast, unveiling the hidden and beautiful Romanian dances art.

QUESTIONNAIRE ON TOUCH RESULTS

F

irst of all I would like to start off by saying that, the majority of questions had promising and positive answers, but there were some worrying questions in which the percentage of negative answers were a bit disturbing. So, for example, the first question had 0 “Never” answers, which is good because it would be a problem if people couldn't feel the structure of an object just by touching it.

In a relation with question number 5, question number 6 has also a disturbing percentage of answers. So 86% believes that recycling is good and it should be done, and 4% don't. On the other hand, when someone asks them if their families are recycling, 16% of them answers with “Never”, that's a worrying fact. Question number 7 reveals another negative aspect…… People that are willing to recycle which are in a medium of 70-80% of them…..27% of them have no recycling plant or centre in their area. That positive 86% from question number 5 of people thinking about recycling as a good fact…..is reduced to a worrying percentage of under 50%, not good, is it?

Another disturbing percentage is on question number 5. We all know that recycling is very important for nature and for us, especially. This question had 4% “NO” answers, which is a little bit worrying because, that 4% don't believe that rubbish should be recycled, and those specific person's fact and thoughts about recycling which are bad, can easily be past to other persons, younger ones especially. 32

Colegiul Comercial Carol I - Romania

I must submit the fact that people nowadays are not eating healthy, at all, and fast food restaurants are enlargening their number, but there is still hope because question number 10 reveals the fact that 6% of the people that answered this questionnaire “Never” eat at a fast food restaurant, which in my opinion fastfood should never be associated with the term restaurant…because a restaurant is a place where you can relax and enjoy your meal……Eating fast-food never helps relax your body and mind, which takes us to question number 11 that reveals the fact that 8% of the people think that healthy lifestyle is NOT connected with our mood, which I must totally decline because food ,in general, is connected to our body, soul and mind, and it 100% influences our lifestyle, our body, our mind, our soul, our thoughts, our protection, our everything. You are, what you eat!

Another worrying analysis is on question number 16, which reveals the fact that more than 40% of people that answer this questionnaire think that them and their friends are the examples of typical couch potatoes, which is also not very good . 35

The rest of the questions, with their answers are just subjective!

Questionnaire on Touch When you touch an object can you easily feel its structure? As you can see in the graphic most of the people (58%) answered that they sometimes ,understand an objects structure when they touch it. Also it's impressive that 37% of the people that were asked, answered that they can always figure out something's structure just by touching it. It is very positive that only three people never understand the structure of an object. How often do you practice sports? It's very comforting that a great percentage of people say that they often practice sports nowadays because it leads to a healthy lifestyle.

Is the lack of time one of the reasons why people do not practice sport regularly? It's very sad that lack of time is an obstacle for people who want to practice sports. Probably contemporary way of life is to blame. Is there a connection between the level of aggression and violence among children and the lack of touching? The majority of the people asked didn't really know if there is a connection between children's bullying and lack of touching. Is it important to recycle the rubbish? It's really optimistic that the great majority of people believe that recycling is very important. We are in a good way of protecting our

We finally conclude that it is very important not only for Turkey's economy but also a clean and regular environment. Secondly, our city Manisa is very important textile centre and many different textile materials are produced in the factories for clothes and furniture. We thought that we could recycle leftovers of the cloth in the working places.

t school we often have seminars to be concentrated on the importance of recycling. We were very serious for one of the activities of project meeting which will be held in Poland. First, we planned and made arrangements to visit a recycling f a c t o r y. We believe this activity will help to r a i s e o u r motivation and awareness on recycling. One day, after school, with a group of students and teachers, we observed what it is being operated there and how. It was very interesting for us to see the result, plastic baskets, chairs, etc... The ways we followed; - Cloth leftovers were provided from the factories by the parents interested in project activities. ith the previous Comenius project Y.E.S., we organised English Debating classes and implemented debating sessions at school. This effective activity improved and interested the students to a great extent. Generally, we prepared these sessions to create a situation where the students can debate and use a foreign language they are learning at school with international or regional talking points. This supported our aim and teaching methods as we are teachers of English. These are some motions we debated; Children reflect what they get from their parents A small change can make a big difference Media influences our opinions too much. Finally, we observed that the students liked and had a good time with this way teaching by speaking, listening and debating. As teachers, we believe this is one of the most effective, interesting and creative activities of all.

adges from the pet bottle caps was thought as an ideal The idea of making project work for making new products from recycling materials. The point we wanted to make clear is that we can do lots of useful materials from the used materials. We collected the caps of pet bottles, cut the sides and stuck the project five logos on them. The pins were stuck behind the bottle caps and now we can pin them on our clothes to let other people see our masterpieces. We worked them together with the students and the teachers at school cooperatively. We all enjoyed doing a wonderful work.

TOUCHING

W

e gathered different objects in order to guess what they are, what they are made of and who they are. One day we planned a touching session at school with several students. We understood that it was easy to guess what they were made of but very difficult to guess what they were. It was entertaining and interesting for the participants to be in such an activity. In another session, blind folded two people tried to find the people who were in front of them by touching their hands to their faces or some other parts of the bodies.

TURKISH COMMENT ON THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON TOUCH It was observed that touching is more important than looking at the objects in the questionnaire which was implemented with the students, teachers and parents in Turkey. But It was proved that the people don't prefer touching the interesting objects directly. To a great extent the people would rather to look at and touch the objects while they are buying. As a result of the questionnaire, we can easily say that the people we implemented the questionnaire are very conscious and fastidious on recycling. We can obviously explain that they support the idea of punishment with their all sensitiveness. In our country, the people prefer eating at their home to fast food restaurants because they know that natural food is very important for a healthy life. In our country it is observed that the people don't do a lot of sports because of the insufficiency of sports areas. So it emerged that Turkish people prefer an inactive life. İn Turkey, touching is very important method in order to greet. The Turkish Comenius team

Graphs analysis and comments of all countries

T

o make the comprehension and analysis of the graphics easier we decided to gather all the answers from all the countries to create a mega questionnaire and then we divided the questions in four groups. The first group is about “Touch and Sight” and covers the questions one to four. The second group is about “Recycling” and includes the questions five to eight. The third group is about “Lifestyle” and covers the questions nine to sixteen. The last group is about “Cultures and personal social, communicative and emotional development” and includes the rest of the questions.

didn't know, so we conclude that despite the results being pretty close there are more people that prefer to touch things than to look at them. For the third question “If something looks attractive do you want to touch it immediately?” the results were 38,19% for always, 56,5% for sometimes and 5,4% for never, this results tell us that despite most people like to touch things immediately the biggest part just want to do it sometimes. When confronted to the question “When buying things what is more important to you: the look or the structure?” the results were 76% for both, 16,7% for just the look and 7,3% for I don't know, so we can conclude that when people are making choices they can't give preference to just one sense, that's why they use both.

“Recycling” “Touch and Sight” To the first question “When you touch an object can you easily feel its structure?” the end result was 52,6% for always, 43,1% for sometimes and 4,3% for never, which tells us that most of the people can easily identify an object by touch, if not always in most cases. When confronted with the question “When you are confronted with something new do you prefer to look at it or to touch it?” the results were 51,9% to touch it, 38,2% to look at it and 9,9% of people

To the question “Is it important to recycle the rubbish?” the results were 87,3% for yes, 5,6% for no and 7,1% for I don't know, which tells us that almost everybody knows that recycling is an important practice. To the sixth question “How often do you or your family recycle the rubbish?” the end result was 40,8% for every day, 47,4% for sometimes and 11,8% for never. Despite of the fact that only 11,8% of the people never recycle, there should be more people recycling everyday. 44

When confronted to the question “Is there any recycling plant/center in your area?” the results were 54,9% for yes, 27,9% for no and 17,2% for I don't know, which explains in a certain way the results to the previous question, and it should be something to be improved in the future. To the question “Do you think the people who do not recycle should be punished?” the results were 34,9% for yes, 48,3% for no and 22,8% for I don't know. As most of the people don't recycle everyday their point about not wanting to be punished is understandable. “Lifestyles” To the question “Do you think a healthy lifestyle is connected with our mood?” the results were 70,7% for “yes”, 16% for “no” and 13,3% for “I don't know”. The results show the importance people give to being fit, practising sports and eating well and healthily. When confronted with the question “How often do you practise sports?” the results were 47,8% for “often”, 45,9% for “sometimes” and 6,3% for “never”. According to the results we may see that in spite of knowing that regular physical activity is important, lots of people don't do it frequently. To the question “How easily do you get tired?” the results were 16% for “easily”, 44% for “sometimes” and 40% for “hardly”. These results show us that people don't get tired easily, which may lead us to infer that they might be healthy people. 45

About the frequency of physical exercise practised in the morning, the results were 17,5% for “every day”, 48,1% for “sometimes” and 34,4% for “never”. By the results we can conclude that most people who exercise don't do it in the morning. Concerning question no. 15,“Is the lack of time one of the reasons why people do not practise sport regularly?” the results were 57,1% for “yes”, 22,6% for “no” and 20,3% for “I don't know”. According to the results and based on the previous question, we may see that people don't exercise in the morning and that they don't do it because of the lack of time. When confronted with the question “Do you think you and your friends are the examples of typical couch potatoes?” the results were 19,8% for “yes”, 58,9% for “no” and 21,3% for “I don't know”. The results show us that most of the people who answered this questionnaire lead a healthy lifestyle.

“Cultures and personal social, communicative and emotional development” To the question “Do cultures all over the world have different ways in which they greet each other through touch?”, Most people, around 70,2% answered positively. Only 10,7% denied 19,1% didn’t know. This result tells us that people are more open and recognize other cultures besides their own, which is something good. When confronted with the question “Is there a connection between the level of aggression and violence among children and the lack of touching?” the results were 62,1% for “yes”, 10,9% for “no” and 27% for “I don't know”. Specialists in this area conclude that the touch is essential for the good development of every human being. Many say that touching helps specially in a psychological way and helps a lot to keep children calm and less aggressive, and with these results people in general also recognize that. To the question “How important is touch in the development of communication, social and physical skills?” the results were 47,3 % for “it's very important”, 43,9% for “it's important” and 8,8% for “it's not so important”. Touching as it was mentioned before helps a lot in a psychological and physical way, it helps a lot to make people more sociable which makes it

essential to improve a p e r s o n ’ s communication, social and physical skills, and the results tell us that people recognize its value. F i n a l l y, w h e n confronted with the question “Does the human touch have physical and emotional benefits for people of all ages?” the results were 77,3% for “yes”, 6,4% for “no” and 16,3% for “I don't know”. Specialists claim that the touch has a lot of advantages, namely those we have referred to before. The Portuguese Comenius team
