We don’t just need eyes to see, we need something else: will it be our thoughts? , our hearts? , our cultural inheritance? Here is where the adventure finds its most amazing moment: the searching for the points in common and the respect for the different will become objectives in a world saturated with images and biased interpretations. Behind all of them there are people like us, with a name and with a life. May the respect we owe them be above everything that separates us. Pablo Berrozpe

But one of the most interesting questions was about learning. As you can see in the graphic below, most of the students said they learned easily with images, what may make us think about our education system and how it is organized.

Is also good looking the questions about how our own image affects us. For example, when we question

if the student is satisfied the way he/she looks, there is a 20% that doesn’t. It is

something that may be a little bit surprising.

PHOTO RALLY The project F.I.V.E. deals with the five senses and we are now into sight. One of the activities we worked on is a photographic rally. We had to go out in the street and take pictures of things or ordinary situations which despite they are simplewe are not usually aware of or we don’t pay attention to.

In my case, at the beginning I didn´t know what to do, but when I went out in the street, I gave things a different look: I stopped to enjoy different aspects of life which I had never imagined. Every detail was shocking to me for the first time, every corner was attractive and every minute was something to capture. With my

camera as a new friend, I concentrated on a new vision of life in my city. A new city lay ahead of me. I hope you enjoy the pictures we took on our day out. We are looking forward to sharing them with you.

Then, they divided us into two different groups to do some activities about blind people’s daily routines. They taught us how to write with a Braille machine and how we could read it. The first time I tried it was difficult because it wasn’t as easy as in the keyboard but it was a good experience and it provided us with a better knowledge. Later, they gave us some special glasses so

that we could see life with a visual handicap. Finally, they covered our eyes and with a partner playing the part of the guide, we walked along the corridor. I really had a good time and I learned that we can live without our sight.

Sandra Hernandez

ONCE ACTIVITY In this term some of us had a special activity for the F.I.V.E. project. First, two women from the ONCE (National Organization of blind Spanish people) talked to us about the different visual problems of blind people. They told us for example, that some of them could only see within a small distance and others could see everything although the central area was unclear for them.

PE ACTIVITIES The project FIVE deals with the five senses and we are now into sight. One of theIn physical

education classes we practice lots of exercises related to the sense of sight . First of all, our teacher taught as how to walk down the street pretending to be blind , the strategy to follow if we meet someone who is blind and also how we would behave if we couldn’t see.

Then we did lots of exercises such as swapping our sweaters - obviously blindfolded-; in another exercise we made a circle and we had to identify the objects that were going round. The most interesting exercise we did was to act as a blind person with special objects like a stick, some special sunglasses and one bell to follow the noise : we felt hopeless.

After all these activities, we realized that we have to be very happy with our condition, because sight is one of the most wonderful senses. Another thing that we were aware of was that we have to help those who need our help in the street , so if you come across with one blind person you should ask them if they want some help . GUESS WHAT IS MISSING

If you are given a picture where one half is missing, it is not easy to guess what the other part may be like. In the activity of the photo cuts, our imagination had to work really hard to solve the hidden mystery.

we saw the original photo and then realized that none of us had reflected its reality. The next step was to reflect about the reasons for such different results. We realized that sometimes we are

tivity, we come to the conclusion that we mustn’t give an opinion before we have analyzed the reality in whole. Nobody guessed that next to the pie there was one image missing: an immigrant

Each one of us had to complete our photo not knowing that other colleagues were working on the same picture. That is why when we showed our “works of art” we were surprised to see that each one of us had interpreted the photo in a different way. The surprise was even bigger when

driven away by our first impressions of people, objects, facts etc. In the same way, the experiences we have gone through may interfere with our interpretation of reality. There are other occasions when we only see what we are interested in or what we would like to see. As a result of this ac-

GETTING STARTED

This is a brief presentation of what we have been doing since November when the meeting in Spain took place. Our teachers devised a questionnaire on sight which was posted on the site of the project and then we answered the questionnaire. The graphic analysis was made by the Portugal team and the results were

closely analyzed by our teachers. We had the activity of the “cut” photos – some photos were selected and then some of our colleagues were asked to draw the cut half of the picture. This was an interesting activity and it was quite fun. We took a lot of pictures of our city and the people that live here and we selected

10 of these photos for the exhibition which we will organize here in Constanta. We put together a conversation guide Romanian – English so that you could learn some Romanian while you are here and, most of all, we got ready for your visit.

ANSWERING THE ONLINE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

These are our results for the questions on Sight. There are only a few questions, you know the rest of them.

1. When you read a story do you picture the setting and characters in your mind?

2. Do you find it easy to remember the faces of the people you see?

3. Can you remember the details (colour, shape, size, characteristics) of an object you see briefly?

GREECE

Volos (Greek: Βόλος) is a coastal port city in Thessaly situated midway on the Greek mainland, about 326 km north of Athens and 215 km south of Thessaloniki. It is the capital of the Magnesia regional unit. Volos is the only outlet to the sea from Thessaly, the country's largest agricultural region. With a population of 144,449 (2011), it is an impor-

tant industrial centre, while its port provides a bridge between Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Volos is the newest of the Greek port cities, with a large proportion of modern buildings erected following the catastrophic earthquakes of 1955. It includes the municipal units of Volos, Nea Ionia and Iolkos, as well as smaller suburban communities. The

economy of the city is based on manufacturing, trade, services and tourism. Home to the University of Thessaly, the city also offers facilities for conferences, exhibitions and major sporting, cultural and scientific events.

THE COMMENTS OF THE RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON TASTE

Most of the people questioned (72%) answered that they pictured the settings and characters in mind while reading a story. They can also remember the faces of the people easily. Surprisingly all of the questionnaire participants remember the details of an object (100%) and they also think the colours are somehow connected with the personality. More than a half of the asked people think that the sense of sight

is connected with the other senses. It seems not to be surprising that sometimes they feel afraid in a dark room. 70% are not satisfied with the way they look and more than a half are influenced by the images of famous people. Majority of people questioned admitted the first impressions a not always correct and the physical appearance not so much contributes to a person’s self-esteem. Only sometimes they

visit cultural and art places. It seems they are the representatives having strong personalities, who are not so much influenced by TV or the Internet. They feel their nationality and all of them can easily recognize typical images of Poland but there can be some problems with other countries’ symbols. The answers were taken among the students, the teachers and the parents of our school.

THE “CUT” PHOTOS ACTIVITY

Our Comenius team took part in a “cut photo” activity. We were given only a half of a picture and then we had to draw the second half as real as we think it is. Every of us had different vision about the second half of his/her picture. We used markers, pencils, crayons and our mind. It was a great experience for us and it

showed our creativity, abilities to imagine and see the world in different ways. At the end of our work, we presented our pictures to other groups and then we were shown the original pictures. Finally, it turned out that our masterpieces differ from reality. Anyway we enjoyed our work...

Here are some of our pictures:

THE PHOTO RALLY

The next task was to take an unusual and unexpected photo in an usual life. We had ours cameras all the time and tried to take a photo, but it was very hard to catch a good situation. Luckily we have done it during our school activities, sport trainings, cleaning activities within the idea of environment protection and Christmas meetings.

Life without light This photo shows how to understand people who live without abilities to see , how they feel and behave in everyday lives.

Sports Life = Healthy Life Skiing = fun, enjoyment and at the same healthy lifestyle.

THE WORKSHOP WITH BLIND PEOPLE

The next activity was the workshop with blind people. They let us know how they lead their lives. It means studying, reading books, doing homework, traveling, walking, recognizing items of an everyday life. We had an opportunity to talk with the blind to experience how they live, feel and behave. We found out that they are like typical people just like us! Their disability doesn’t make any difference during any normal day.

QUESTIONNAIRE OF SIGHT

For this project we made fifty persons from our country fill in a questionnaire about sight. 88% of the people picture the characters and setting, while reading books. Those people also associate pictures, while studying content for school. This leads to the conclusion that people tend to use their sight to connect images with content. Although 82% of the people find it easy to remember faces, but quite a lot less people of questioned persons can remember the small details of an object. For example: the size and the weight. This means that we recognize faces, be-

cause we remember the shape of the face, the color of the eyes and skin color. We do not remember the red pimple on his or her forehead. Results have shown that almost sixty percent is slightly or a bit influenced by famous people. This is easy to understand, because seventy percent thinks a good appearance contributes to their self-esteem. Because people want to improve their selfesteem, people buy the same clothes and accessories as actors, singers or sport idols. From the people we have asked 74% can

identify some typical images associated with their own country. We, from the Netherlands, for example associate cheese, windmills, tulips and canals with our country. However seventy percent can also associate typical images with other countries. Television and internet are the cause. Eighty-six percent of the people are influenced by watching television or surfing the web. For example when we think of Japan we think of a highly advanced capital, old cultures, sushi and lots of crowds.

W h e n yo u l o o k r e ally ctritical at things, things become really interesting. So we took out our camera’s and took some pretty good pictures. Sometimes we had to create the interesting element in the pictures ourselves. For example by creating a spectrum. And sometimes the photo was already interesting. All the pictures are ’Dutch themed’. This is a picture taken in the centre of Amsterdam. You can see the water, which we call canals, in the background. The object is a ‘lost and found fence’. There is a website and a phone-number on the fence so you can contact for information. The three red crosses symbolise Amsterdam. In Amsterdam there are a lot of boats in the canals. You can sail the canals in the centre of Amsterdam.

We chose this picture because it is a strange thing. It’s a richly decorated building and your first impression doesn’t say that it’s an electricity house. You don’t see this very often.

This picture shows us a close-up from one of the boats in the canals. When you first look at the picture you wouldn’t say that it’s a boat.

ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

We are going to analyze the answers to the questionnaire on Sight. We divided the questions into five topics: Education, Memory, Senses and Personality, Appearance, Culture and Traditions The first, the fourth and the thirteenth questions are related to education. The first question was “When you read a story do you picture the setting and characters in your mind?” To this question there were three options: “Yes”, “No”, “I don’t know”. Almost everyone (90%) replied “Yes”, some people (8%) answered “No”, and almost no one (2%) replied “Don’t know”. With these answers we conclude that almost everyone pictures the setting and characters in the mind when reading a story, which is very good because by doing it, people are developing memory capabilities and will remember the story better. The fourth question was “Do you learn more easily when the content is associated with pictures /images?” The options were: “Yes”, “No”, “ don’t know”. Most of the people (82%) answered “Yes”, some people (14%) decided on “I don’t know” and almost no one (4%) chose “No”. The majority of the people learn more easily with pictures, so we conclude that images help us memorizing. It shows us that some people frequently think with images and they can easily remember visual elements and little details that they can observe in their daily life and explanations of some kind of subject, like the instructions for a machine or, in the students’ case, an explanation of biology is better understood if we have an image to associate with the text. And as we use to say, a picture is worth more than a thousand words. The thirteenth question was “How often do you visit a museum or an art gallery?” The options were: “Very often”, “Sometimes”, “Never”. Most of the people (58%) replied “Sometimes”, a lot of people (40%) chose “Never” and almost no one answered “Very often”, only 2% of the people who answered the questionnaire. With these answers we conclude that people rarely visit museums or art galleries; this may happen because of different factors: financial problems, living distant from the museums, the new technologies (TV, computer, etc), the indifference to art, etc. The second and third questions are related to memory. Questions 2 and 3 were related to memory. Question two asked about remembering people’s faces. The majority of the people (72%) replied affirmatively, that they could easily remember faces, against the 16% of the people that couldn’t simply remember and the 12% who didn’t know. Question number three is similar to the second one, but it asked about our memories of the details of objects. In this question, only 62% of the inquired could remember details, and the number of people that couldn´t memorize or didn’t know increased to 22% and 16% respectively. With these results we can infer that it’s easy to remember some particularities when they are associated with the sense of vision, but the percentages show us that it’s easier to remember human faces than tiny details of objects.

Page 25

ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

The fifth, sixth, seventh and fourteenth questions are related to senses and personality. All these questions are related to our senses and connected to our personality – the way our senses affect our personality. The fifth question was about the existence of a connection between the colors we like and our personality, the options to this question were: “Yes”, “No” and “I Don’t Know”. Most of the people (62%) replied that this connection existed; then, 16% answered that this connection didn’t exist, and 22%, didn’t know. From these answers we can infer that our personality may influence the colors we like, or the colors influence our personality. Most people agree that there’s a connection between colors and personality. The sixth question was related to a possible connection between sight and the other senses. Most of the people (84 %) chose “Yes”; then, (8%) answered “No” and 8% replied “I don’t know”. From these answers we can conclude that, in fact, most people agree that sight is connected to the other senses, like hearing, touch, taste and smell. The seventh question was about being afraid while being in a dark room because we didn’t see where we were. The answers to this question were, “Yes, I am always afraid.” (12%); “Sometimes, especially when the room is not familiar to me.” (62%) and “No, because I rely on my other sense” (26%). From these answers, we can infer that knowing where we are influences our behavior, by keeping calm or afraid, very much. We can observe that most people don’t become afraid because they know how is the place where they are. From this question, we can also see that only 26% of the people that answered to this questionnaire trust in the other senses, so, we can say that the sight is one of the most important senses of the five senses we have. The fourteenth question asked how much people think their ideas are influenced by what we watch on TV or on the Internet. The majority of the people (64%) answered that the ideas are influenced by what we watch on TV or on the Internet very much, 32% said that the ideas are not very much influenced and 4% replied that they didn’t know. Seeing these answers, we can conclude that our senses, in this case, sight, have a great influence in most of the people, because most of them agreed that the ideas are influenced by what we watch on TV or on the Internet, so we can say that in this case, sight also affects our personality.

ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

The eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth questions are related to physical appearance. These questions are related to the appearance. The eighth question was about our own appearance and most of the people (42%) replied that they were very satisfied with the way they looked, 32% answered that they weren’t very satisfied which means that they would like to change something about themselves and 26% answered that they didn’t pay attention to the way they look. The ninth question was about the influence of the famous people’s image or appearance in our own image. Most of the people who were inquired (62%) said that they weren’t influenced at all which means that, in spite of seeing all those famous personalities wearing this piece of clothing or behaving in a certain way, they can think by themselves and have their own personality, be who they are and not what the others want them to be. 34% replied that they weren’t so much influenced and only 4% answered that they were very influenced by famous people’s image. The tenth question was about how much sight influences our judgment on people. 52% of the inquired people answered “Quite enough”, 26% answered “Very much” which means that they use sight to criticise someone about the way they look or behave, and 22% answered “Not much”. The eleventh question was about first impressions, if they were correct. 76% answered “Not all the time” which means that what they think about someone does not always prove to be right, 22% replied “Not at all” so, that means that what they think of someone is always wrong and only 2% said “Yes, always”, which probably means that the first impression they get from someone is always right. The twelfth question was about if the physical appearance contributed to a person’s self-esteem. Most of the people who answered the questionnaire (70%) answered “Very much”, 28% answered “Not so much” and only 2% answered “Not at all” which means that for them the physical appearance has nothing to do with a person’s self-esteem. The fifteenth and sixteenth questions are related to culture and traditions. These questions were very similar. The fifteenth question asked people if they could associate typical images with their country and the majority answered “Yes, a lot” with a percentage of 76%, leaving only 4% of people who do not associate and 20% who don’t know if they could do it. The sixteenth question asked the same but relating it to other countries and the results were similar; 68% said “Yes”, 8% replied “No” and 24% chose “I do not know”. We can conclude that it is really easy to connect some typical images to their correct culture and tradition, especially to our own culture, because it’s a lot simpler to identify our own traditions than the traditions of other countries although there is a big quantity of people who answered that they could relate pictures of different cultures to their own countries. This shows that people have some knowledge about multiple cultures probably because of the growing multiculturalism.

ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

CONCLUSION After all the analysis we’ve done, we conclude that sight is a very important sense, and we use it every day, even without noticing we are doing it, in every single task, even in the simplest one. As we have already mentioned, vision helps us in our education, and it’s very important in the process of learning; in the answers we had, we could observe that the use of pictures helps us to understand better a subject, and that we easily associate words with images; therefore, we may infer the importance images have to us. It is also good for our common knowledge, because we can use our sight to visit important places to improve our knowledge and education, like museums, theatres, etc. It’s also the sense of sight that gives us memories, and it is very important because it helps us to memorize better, and as the answers showed, to remember better some details of people’s faces and objects we see or use in our daily life. For us, it is easier to remember things that we’ve already seen. Something that is also very important is the relationship between sight and the other senses and also with our way of seeing things. For us, sight influences our personality and the other senses. In a way, what we watch on TV and on the Internet influences our opinions and the way we think about certain subjects, so that we may dare to say that vision controls our personality. The Sight is connected to the other senses and together they help us to live our lives more easily. Sight is also essential to have a perception of ourselves and of the others. Physical appearance is something considered important in our current society and it’s through our eyes that we judge famous people, our friends, ourselves and even strangers, and it’s also through them that we get the first impressions of all those people, even if they are the wrong ones. At last, we also use sight to improve our information about our culture and have the possibility to learn about other cultures and other traditions. It’s with our sense of vision that we can correlate certain traditions to a certain country, contributing thus to the improvement in knowing other ways of living, different from what we are used to. Summing up, the sight is really an important sense which we find very difficult to live without. Our entire life is commanded by what our eyes see and transmit to our brains. Everything we learn at school, our childhood memories, our social life, our culture depends on what we see. In fact, it’s our vision that introduces us to the world. The Portuguese Comenius team

STORY WRITING AND INTERVIEWS

For this second meeting of Comenius F.I.V.E. Project, the Portuguese students had to perform several tasks and in one of these activities we had to write a story for the F.I.V.E. Trivial Pursuit. It was given the beginning “Once upon a time in a far, far Kingdom of Values and Senses” and, then, we had to continue to develop an interesting and thrilling story about the adventures of a hero or heroes, and his or her quest to overcome problems and obstacles, so in the end the immorality was defeated. As the sense for this meeting is Sight, we interviewed a visually impaired student who studies at our school, and her class tutor. We asked the student about her vision problem, what the main difficulties in her life were, if she had ever felt discriminated against, how she felt in a regular class, what the relationship with her classmates was, if they helped and accepted her, if she preferred to be in a special class and have a differ-

ent supervision, if she gave more attention to her other senses, if she felt that she needed more help and we finally asked her if she could give some advice to other students with the same problem as hers. She answered that she liked to be in a regular class and felt integrated, that she didn’t feel like she needed a specialized support because her friends and teachers understand and help her and that she had never felt discriminated. She also said that she finds it a bit difficult to interact with students that she doesn’t know because it’s harder to meet them, and that her problem has started in her childhood but it’s becoming worse as the time passes which makes her daily routine more difficult, but she relies on her other senses, like her hearing, because she has a different perception of the sounds than the other people have. In the end she advised others with the same problem to never give up despite all the adversi-

ties. To her teacher it was asked what the main difficulties of the student were, what she thought about the interaction amongst the student and her classmates, if she considered that the girl needed a special support like belonging to a special class or even attending a school for visually impaired people, and how the Board of Education could help in this situation. She said that the biggest difficulties is in the class, small tasks like copying things from the board and writing, that all the classmates accepted the girl very well and helped her very much and recognized her disability. She believed that the student needed a specialized help in her learning and added that the school has received equipments to be used in the classroom to help her. Leonor Ferreira

THINGS AREN`T ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM

If there is something that I can surely say is that things aren’t always as they seem.

Take as an example the following pictures:

In Portugal we made a very interesting activity in which the students that are members of Project F.I.V.E. participated. In this activity teacher Belmira Pinto showed us some half pictures so that the students may speculate on them. They also had to discover what the other half of the picture was. In most of pictures the students couldn’t figure out what in the other part of the picture was, because they really looked to be something very different of what they actually were. All the students and I included were very much surprised when we saw the complete pictures.

This activity was a very good experience which allowed us to draw the conclusion that things aren’t always as they seem. José Pedro Fernandes

When the students watched the first half of thepicture they thought the man was talking to a person. This happened because we know it by the movements he is doing that he is talking, so we guessed he is talking to a person , but when we watched the picture, he was actually talking to a statue. This type of illusion happened in many of the pictures.

BLINDFOLDED EXPERIENCE In fact, this blindness experience was great and made me realise that losing the sight is an experience that is out on a limb. Indeed, we only realise the difficulties blind people have to endure every single day when we put ourselves in their shoes. This experience made me see that things that are completely easy for normal people, for visually impaired people they are almost a nightmare, and why? Well, in spite of heightening our other senses, we lose our balance, our autonomy...

This experience was a pure euphemism because it was an opening of eyes, an opening of eyes to a reality that is many times disvalued, a reality that does not have the importance that is required. I had many difficulties during this experience. The worst things I have done were probably walking and climbing stairs. It was really a terrifying experience because, in the case of walking, we do not have the notion of what surrounds us, of where we are and our balance is unstable and, in the

case of climbing stairs, it was hard because I needed to be very careful not to fall and also to know where the end of the stairs was. Concluding, this experience taught me many things and showed me the difficulties of the people that unfortunately lost their sight and have to struggle every day. I honestly believe that everyone should try to do this, because only then we are going to really understand what it like. Fátima Lopes

PHOTO RALLY In Portugal, as in the other partner countries, after we had reflected upon the activity Things Aren’t Always As They Seem we all engaged in the photo rally. The students who were members of the F.I.V.E. Project were divided into groups and each group had to take some photos as they walked around in their daily lives. These photos had to be connected with the things we do or the situations see in our daily life and with the five senses. Altogether the groups, four, took twenty photos. The students should also give the most suitable title and write a short reflection on the photo. These photos underwent the scrutiny of a poll created by the local coordinator and bearing in mind the results, these were the ten best photos that were selected amongst the Portuguese teachers and students:

The top five, in white frames, are going to be shown in the exhibition which is going to be take place in the Constanta project meeting. At the same time all the photos will be exhibited in our school from the 25th February to the 1st March, so that the Portuguese school community may enjoy the work done by the Comenius team. PODCAST ON DEBATING One of the goals of this project is promoting debates amongst the students about subjects related with this project. Debating allows the students to take several positions and get some opinions about the subject we are debating. In order to explain the function and the rules of the debates to the other participants involved in the F.I.V.E. project, the Portuguese team had proceeded to the creation of a podcast that should not be boring. Instead, it should arouse the students’ interest in debat-

ing, since some participants have not had much training in this interesting activity as we have in our school. With this podcast we intend to show and explain to the people how debates work. On the podcast we can understand all the rules of the debate, what we should or should not do, all of that explained in video parts taken from a recorded debating session. The English debates aim to give the students a chance to participate in ample debate training, not only to enhance their

English linguistic skills but also to boost their critical thinking and broaden their perspectives on the debated issues. We hope that, with this podcast, the students become more interested in debating, because it helps to improve all of ours skills in the English language and it’s a good way to exchange different opinions on a certain issue. It is somehow like a make believe game.

using, for example, plastic spoons to make the puppets’ eyes. This play involved much work, since the writing of the story, passing through the puppets’ creation and the play rehearsals, where excellence and dedication were required so that everything should be perfect. In spite of all the work, we had a very good time, especially during the rehearsals, which were very

funny. Concluding, the performance of this puppet play was important because, this way, we can share our traditions, our culture, with people from different countries and cultures, reminding ourselves of these traditions in order to keep them alive while having fun by doing something that represents our country. THE PUPPET PLAY The puppet play was created by the Portuguese team and was presented in the Intercultural Festival in Constanta, Romania. This play portrays the Portuguese Carnival tradition in our region, Castelo de Paiva, and in the north of Portugal. IMPORTANCE OF SIGHT TO LITHUANIAN TEAM

The second F.I.V.E. project meeting is hosted in Romania. Before the trip we had to do our questionnaires, but this time it was about the different sense – the sense of sight. By sight we can recognize light, colours, things in space. In questionnaire we had different questions, associated with the sight. In our opinion the most interesting and the most attractive questions were these: “Do you learn more easily when the content is associated with pictures?”, “ Do you think that first impressions are correct “, “ How much do you think your ideas are influenced by that we watch on TV or in Internet?“. We even held debate sessions, based on the results of the questionnaire and our general education. The results of the questionnaire showed that more than a half of us (58 %) think that the first impression is not right all the time. This provoked big discussion in our group: one part of our debating students was sure that they believed in love from the first sight and they could feel what people they could trust, while the others thought that you couldn't trust a person who you saw for the first time. The results of the questionnaire showed that the bigger part (48%) of Lithuanian respondents learn or memorize the information much better when they see images and pictures. We also strongly believe (62%), that the sense of sight is connected to the other senses. The sense of sight seems to be very important to us, because the majority of us (86%) are afraid being in the dark room, because it is impossible to see something. As all teens Lithuanians pay huge attention to their appearance (54% are not satisfied with the way they look). One more question which drew our attention was about our opinion on TV and the Internet influence on our ideas. We live in a modern world so everyone must agree that the influence of watching TV and surfing the Internet is considerable. But the results of the questionnaire showed that 68 % of Lithuanian students think that our ideas are not influenced by Television and the Internet. In conclusion the results of the questionnaire showed that sight is very important for our lives, the ability to see helps us to communicate with the world. Blindness affects a person's ability to perform many job duties, to know the environment, to meet people and this affects a person’s self esteem.

TAKE A LOOK FROM ANOTHER ANGLE

During our last meeting and before, the main topic of our project F.I.V.E. was taste. At home, while preparing for our very first visit to Spain, we discovered many various thing about taste and importance of this sense to our life. Our team came back from Vitoria-Gasteiz with many new experiences, ideas and stories, that the rest of Lithuanian team enjoyed hearing for a long time. The stories were so exciting and interesting that they convinced everyone to work harder on preparing for our next meeting in February. For the past three months we have been preparing for our trip to Romania and this time we have been exploring another human‘s sense – sight. Sight is very important human sense, and we are all greatly thankful for that all of us, and most of our relatives are able to see and explore the world by seeing it. Although, even if the sight seems

to be quite easy task to work on, our team struggled through many things over the past three months...

shocking, that would represent us, our lives, our nationality. In other words we had to look at the same things from the different angle. Let me tell you the truth: we all had never expected that it could be so hard. One of the We took loads first and most of pictures, showing important tasks this various things, but time was taking none of them seemed pictures. Nowadays, to fit the idea. We had when technology is to work hard almost taking over, we all for a month. We tried are taking pictures taking pictures at almost everywhere, home, went outside everyday and with the whole team, everytime. It is weird we were taking how taking pictures pictures even at has become so school, during the important to us, and lessons. Meeting after we like to share meeting we came in almost every moment and shared our of our life with disappointement with others. Taking each other and some pictures seems to be of us thought that we so easy and fast, but could never get this the weirdest thing done. Finally after happened when we taking more than few got the task for hundred pictures, we F.I.V.E. was to look managed to finish the for and take pictures task. We had whole of everyday life. We bunch of pictures, that were supposed to we were happy about show something and we just had to interesting, something pick the best ones. It different, maybe even was hard to decide

which pictures are worth being exhibited and shared with the others, which ones truly represent what we want to say. Everybody had different oppinions and ideas. We discussed, then we discussed more and after that we made some great decisions together. Even though this task was truly a rough one, we learned a lot from it. We not only learned to take pictures, but we also understood how much more closer we have to be, how working together is important. This is what project F.I.V.E. does for us – it teaches us not only how to experience, but also how to live and value our friends, our team, our life. Sometimes you just have to change your perspective and take a look from a different angle.

WORKING WITH UNKNOWN PICTURES

In our F.I.V.E. project we have a lot of activities and all of them are different, interesting and even funny. This time we had to fill in the missing parts of pictures. We had to use all our imagination and that was pretty hard, because you never know what is actually “hidden” in the missing part of the picture. Our actual task was to draw what we think was shown in the other half of the picture that we couldn’t see. It was very interesting because we all got different pictures, showing totally different things so we could look at each other’s work and compare it with the actual picture. At first we thought that this task is going to be

very easy. Unfortunately, after some minutes most of us were just sitting there confused and didn’t know what to do. It was actually funny to see friends’ faces and expressions; although not so much fun thinking “What should I draw here???” However after a while all were silent and accumulated – completing our task. We decided to fill in the pictures with the help of “magical” logic and just guess what in real life one could expect in those situations. Finally we could all compare our drawings with the actual pictures. Of course, we all imagined that they will be completely different from what we had drawn, but we could never expect, for example, a

handicapped person to be playing basketball in the picture. Although we also saw that one doesn’t need to be an artist in order to draw a good picture.

In conclusion our task again showed that not everything is what it actually looks like and sometimes you might be very surprised by what certain things are actually like.

ANAMORPHISM

When our team started „exploring“ anamorphic art, we all were very amazed by it. Some of us were seeing it for the very first time in our lives, some of us already knew what it is, but no matter what, we all strongly agreed that it is something amazing. Anamorphic art is understood as a form of perpective art, which is usually more strict than any other form of art. To see the actual masterpiece, you must look at it from a special perspective. Even the distance of one centimetre might change everything. This form of art can be created using mirrors or 3D art. In pieces of anamorphic art the image can be hidden so you have to know the place from which you must look in order to see it. But don't think that if you know one way how to look at it you are all good, because each piece of anamorphic art is special for the viewer, and each type has its own way to be looked at. The fun part of exploring anamorphic art is looking at it and not expecting anything, when boom – all of a sudden you are surprised by the great sight. This kind of art also shows how artists actually see everything differently from the other people and how talented they must be in order to create something that great. Our team enjoyed exploring the pieces of anamorphic art put in the website of our project and some members found it worth studying about.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT :

50 students were selected to answer the questionnaire and here is the results …

As you can see there most of our students think that sense of sigh is connected to the other senses. It shows us sight is a part of human detection system and it works best with the other senses.

“-Do you think the sense of sight is connected to the other senses? ” Most of us said “Yes; it is.” (% 84) and some of our students think “No , It`s not ” and only 1 student said “I don`t know.”

We asked our friends to what extend does sight influence our judgment on people ? And here is the exciting results… Our students thinks that people`s appearance is enough to judge the people. Results are worrying us because personality can be different from our outfit.

THE CUT PHOTOS ACTIVITY

The cut photos activity was an interesting experience for us. It made us learn to how to look different, how to look through the things which are on the streets. We became much more careful to our culture. The activity increased our communication between the students and the teachers and it also increased the sociality in our school. Because we tried to cooperate with all the students. By the photos we took, we could introduce our culture. First of all, we made an announcement about the project at school and we asked for the students to take photos around the city. Hundreds of photos came to us and we had to pick a few of them. Meanwhile we took photos too. And we did a sight exhibition at school. We choose the interesting photos and cut them. Then a group of students tried to guess the other part of the photos. There are a few photos that we think you might be find interesting:

This is a photo from an engagement ceremony.

Turkish people do not pay too much attention to the traffic rules, especially to the red lights. We think we need to educate people about the rules. When they are asked why they break the rules, they express that they are in a hurry, which is not a valid excuse.

GENERAL ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

We are going to compare the analysis of results of the questionnaire on Sight of all the countries from project F.I.V.E.. We divided the questions into five topics: Education, Memory, Senses and Personality, Appearance, Culture and Traditions Education: The first question was “When you read a story do you picture the setting and characters in your mind?” To this question there were three options: “Yes”, “No”, “I don’t know”. All countries answered “Yes”. The highest percentage belongs to Turkey with 100% and the lowest to Lithuania with 66%. We conclude that people in general, when reading a story, picture the setting and characters in their minds which makes them travel to a world of imagination and fantasy. As the story becomes more interesting, it will remain more time in their memory. The fourth question was “Do you learn more easily when the content is associated with pictures /images?” and the answers were similar to all countries, “Yes”. These answers emphasis the saying “A picture is worth more than a thousand words!” The thirteenth question was “How often do you visit a museum or an art gallery?” The options were: “Very often”, “Sometimes”, “Never”. “Sometimes” was the most chosen option which means that in spite of the crisis that Europe is facing, people still give importance to Culture and Art. Memory: Question number two asked about remembering people’s faces. To this question we had the following answers: “Yes”, “No” and “I don’t know”. All the countries have “Yes” as the highest percentage, Spain has the highest percentage to “Yes” with 86% and Lithuania the lowest percentage with 40%, but it’s still the most rated answer. So we conclude that most part of the people find easy to remember people’s faces. We can associate the question number three with the second one, because they are very similar, it asked about our memories of the details of objects. The possible answers to this question were the same as in the second question, “Yes”, “No” and “I don’t know”; we had “Yes” as the most rated answer from all the countries except from Lithuania that had the highest percentage with “No” (40%), Poland had the highest percentage to “Yes” with 100%, being Lithuania with the lowest percentage to “Yes”, with 38%. With the exception of Lithuania, all the countries find easy to remember the details of objects, so we can conclude that the sense of vision allows us to memorize and get many information about some objects.

Page 43

GENERAL ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGH T

Senses and personality: To the fifth question there was an agreement between all the countries, the question was about existing a possible connection between the colors we like and our personality, being the possible answers to this question “Yes”, “No” and “I don’t know”. “Yes” was the most chosen option, being Poland with the highest percentage on this answer with 100% and Spain with the lowest percentage (48%). By the answers that were given to this question we can infer that in fact it exists a connection between colors and personality, it means that colors can influence our personality the same way as the personality can influence the colors we like. The sixth question asked about the existence of a possible connection between the sense of sight and the others senses. The possible answers were the same as in the fifth question, “Yes”, “No” and “I don’t know”, and the highest percentage was, once again, on the answer “Yes”, this time being Greece with the highest percentage (84%) and Romania with the lowest one (60%). We can see through these answers that the most part of the people agree that sight is connected to the other senses someway. The seventh question asked if we felt afraid of being in a dark room, to this question we had the answers “Yes, I’m always afraid”, “Sometimes, especially when the room is not familiar to me” and “No, because I rely on my other senses”, on this question there was an agreement between most part of the countries, except from the Netherlands. The most rated question was “sometimes, especially when the room is not familiar to me”, and all the countries, with the exception of the Netherlands, had this question with the highest percentage (66%), as is the case of Poland and Spain. 42% was the lowest percentage and it belongs to the Netherlands. So we can conclude, from these answers, that sight is one of the most important senses we have, because people feel better when they can use sight. The fourteenth question was about the influence of Internet and TV on the way we think. The options to this question were "A lot", "Not very much" and "I don’t know". Most of the countries answered "A lot". The highest percentage belongs to Poland with 70% and the lowest to Bulgaria with 54%. We can conclude that means of communication, particularly TV and Internet that are the most used by people in general, have a great influence on the way we behave, think and see the world around us.

GENERAL ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGHT

Physical appearance: Questions 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are related to the appearance. The eighth question was “Are you satisfied with the way you look?” The answers to this question were: “Very satisfied”, “Not very satisfied”, “I don’t pay attention to the way I look”. Five countries have answered “Very satisfied” with the highest percentage belonging to Spain (72 %) while four countries replied “Not very satisfied” with the highest percentage belonging to Poland (70%). This way we can conclude that in spite of people being comfortable with the way they look there’s always something that they would like to change in themselves. The ninth question was “Does the image or appearance of famous people have an influence on your own image”. The options were: “Very much”, “Not so much”, “Not at all”. Concluding, as the most answered option between the countries was “Not so much” this means that despite not being easily influenced by celebrities´ look in some way people are attracted by the appearance of famous celebrities. The tenth question was “To what extent does sight influence our judgment on people”. The options were: “Very much”, “Quite enough” and “Not so much”. The highest percentage belongs to the second option, “Quite enough”, only with the exception of Bulgaria that replied “Very much”. In conclusion, we can say that every time that we see someone new we will create a judgment based on the person’s appearance. The eleventh question was “Do you think that first impressions are correct?” .The options were: “Yes, always”, “Not all the time” and “Not at all”. The most chosen option was "Not all the time". The highest percentage belongs to Poland with 94% and the lowest to Lithuania with 58%. Concluding, in spite of the fact that people often create first impressions, these can be correct or not because the personality isn't always related to the appearance. Culture and traditions: The answers for these two similar questions (15 and 16) were also very similar in all countries. The biggest percentage was to the answer “Yes” to both questions, although the fifteenth question, “Can you identify some typical images you associate with your own country?” had bigger percentages of “Yes” than the sixteenth question (“Do you associate typical images with other countries”) except for Poland, where they answered that they could identify more easily traditions from other countries. We can see that it’s easier for us to recognize our own traditions, but it is also easy to recognize traditions from the other countries, which means that we are getting to know other cultures better, mainly because of immigration, multiculturalism, projects, like project F.I.V.E., that allow us to understand better other ways of living.

GENERAL ANALYSIS OF THE ANSWERS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ON SIGH T

Conclusion: With this questionnaire we took a lot of conclusions about the importance of sight and of the image. Concerning education, we conclude that sight is very important, it makes possible for us to see images, and therefore we learn much better, because with images we will not forget so easily the learned information. A good way of upgrading our capacity to learn with the use of images is going to museums, and in spite of different factors (financial problems, new technologies, etc.), people still give some importance to Culture and Art. The sight is also very important to the memory; basically, it makes it possible for us, to remember people’s faces and objects with a lot of detail, and to get much information from them. The colours we like are connected with our personality, because we have our own way of seeing the colours, so colours can influence our personality the same way as the personality can influence the colours we like. When we use different senses together we have a better use of them and this happens because there is a connection between the sense of sight and the others senses. The sense of sight is really important to people, if we are in a dark place we don’t know, we get really afraid because of seeing nothing. The Internet and television have a great influence on the way we think and on the way we see the world around us. We get limited to the ideas that these means of communication give us. Concerning physical appearance, we conclude that some people don’t like the way they look, other people like but there’s always something that they would like to change in themselves. Sometimes people don’t like their physical appearance because they are influenced by famous people and this can make society judge people by the appearance. People will create first impressions that can be correct or not, because the personality isn't all the time related to appearance. Physical appearance contributes a lot to a person’s self-esteem, but some people don’t consider it important. Relatively to culture and traditions, we conclude that it’s easy for us to recognize our own traditions, but it is also easy to recognize the customs from the other countries. This happens mainly because of immigration and multiculturalism.
