Welcome

On behalf of Film Hub London, welcome to the 2020 edition of Distributor Slate Days.

Our cinemas are a vital part of the industry’s ecosystem, contributing significantly to the UK’s culture and economy. As we begin to safely open our doors again, we hope that Distributor Slate Days provides an opportunity for constructive conversations looking towards welcoming back audiences with world-class film. This event provides one of the few opportunities post-lockdown for exhibition and distribution to get together to share new ways of working. We’re in the same ecosystem, we are interdependent.

For our economy, our creative life and our audiences of diverse communities throughout the UK, we really need for cinema exhibition to be sustained and to thrive and prosper. Together with the BFI Film Audience Network through Film Hub Scotland and Film Hub London, and our valuable partners, Distributer Slate Days is our contribution to encouraging this positive dialogue.

We are thrilled to welcome you all from all over the UK, with a packed virtual schedule of film slates, industry talks and one-on-one meetings. Over the next two days we hope that the connections you make translate into exciting and inclusive opportunities, diverse cinema and engaged young audiences.

On behalf of Film Hub Scotland, I’m pleased to welcome you to the 2020 digital edition of Distributor Slate Days.

Over the next two days you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people, preview the forthcoming year of cinema releases and be inspired to bring diverse, independent cinema to your audiences.

In these challenging times there are opportunities to consider and reset how we operate, and to fully embrace new technology to make our lives easier. In moving the event online, Distributor Slate Days becomes more accessible to those exhibitors who weren’t previously able to attend due to geography, budget or access issues.

Film Hub Scotland is the lead organisation for UK-wide BFI FAN Member Support and Development, which includes national training and events, and year-round specialised advice and support from industry experts through FAN Advice Sessions. We’d love to see you at the online This Way Up in December. Registration opens on 5 October.

We hope that you have an enriching, enjoyable and productive Slate Days and leave feeling confident and excited about the future of film. And finally, big thanks to our colleagues at Film Hub London for delivering another brilliant Slate Days.

As the industry starts its recovery from the pandemic, it’s clear no magic switch will get things back to where we were.

We’re all going to have to help each other out. We’ll need to work together to welcome our audiences and colleagues back safely into our venues to get the industry back on track.

If you haven’t yet submitted your application to the Culture Recovery Fund for Independent cinemas in England or the equivalent funds across the Nations, then please do as soon as possible. It’s an unprecedented amount of funding from Government. It should give us all a boost in understanding how valued and how important our industry is to everyone.

So as we make our way back, let’s ensure that our industry should and can be for everyone. We must do everything we can to make it a place where all are welcome, have access and can enjoy.
