Film Access Scotland is the national sector development body which represents Film Access organisations and practitioners across Scotland.

Our members use film as an expressive tool to unlock the potential of individuals, groups and communities to bring about positive and lasting social change.

Members use film and filmmaking to change lives by developing personal, social and technical skills, improving employability outcomes and focussing on health and wellbeing. They work with young people, adult learners, schools, communities and film talent through high-quality, inclusive and accessible learning, training and production programmes.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our member organisations: GMAC Film, Media Education, Plantation Productions, Screen Education Edinburgh and Station House Media Unit and all their staff. We would also like to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible work they do to deliver Film Access activities to people of all ages and backgrounds across Scotland.

A very warm welcome to the 4th Edition of the Youth Film Access Festival!

We are excited to hold an in-person festival once again and have you with us for three days of workshops, panels and screenings, celebrating accessible young filmmaking.

The Festival is brought to you by a group of seventeen 16–25-year-olds with a love for all things film. Our aim is to put together a platform for emerging filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike, to celebrate their work and discover routes into the film industry. Our Programming, Events and Marketing Teams have been working together to deliver the Festival, which this year explores the theme of ‘relationships’, with one another, our surroundings, and ourselves.

Over the past years, the turbulent landscape in which we find ourselves has shifted and transformed our relationships. This was a fundamental exploration that guided us when programming a vast array of film submissions.

We approached the Festival programme with the overarching question: How have our relationships changed?

Though this question was not directly answered through the process, we hope to have opened up a space, beginning a kind of fieldwork that offers multiple perspectives from which to approach this question. The programmes explore human relationships, both present and ones far gone, as well as our relationship with the earth, for we shape our environment as much as it shapes us. We hope to bring awareness to the interconnectedness of these, recognising that our relationships with one another deeply impact the natural world. And as the ground beneath our feet solidifies, we are slowly finding new ways of being with one another.

Venue Information:

Grovepark Hall at Community Central Hall 292-316 Maryhill Road, G20 7YE Nearest Subway Station: Kelvinbridge or St. George’s Cross.

Venue is a 10 minute walk from both stations.

Buses from City Centre: 6, 6A, 17, 60, 60A, 61 Train: 20 minute walk from Charing Cross Station and 30 minute walk from Glasgow Queen Station.

Cars: There is no car park next to the venue but on-street parking is available in surrounding streets.

Bicycle: There are railings outside the venue where bikes can be locked. The building is close to 2 major cycles routes. The Forth and Clyde Canal is about 300 metres north of the venue, which is a link route to route 754.

Route 756, which runs along the river Kelvin, is around 300 metres west of the venue.

Accessibility at the Festival: •The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users.

•All our events & screenings offer a sliding scale ticket price of £0/£2/£4/£6. If you can contribute in a small way towards the costs of running of the Festival, we encourage you to do so, but equally we are happy to offer free tickets to any and all that need them, no questions asked.

•All our film programmes will have descriptive subtitles and will contain content and trigger warnings.

•Film programmes over 40 minutes long will contain a 5 minute break.

•Screenings will be relaxed, with a controlled volume level, and there will be light in the screening room.

•All panels and Q&As will have BSL interpretation. Workshops will have BSL interpretation if required.

•Large print brochures for sight impaired audiences and visual stories will be available to download from our website and at the venue during the Festival.

•Travel bursaries: We have a limited number of bursaries to help cover travel to the Festival for young people attending the Festival. For more information on bursaries please contact us on festival@filmaccess.scot.

COVID SAFETY: We encourage people to wear masks during the events and screenings, unless you are exempt.

Please do not attend the Festival if you have Covid-19 symptoms.

We encourage all attendees of the Festival to take a lateral flow test each day before attending events or screenings to keep us all safe.

We also encourage everyone to continue the practice of social distancing.

There will be hand sanitiser stations in the venue.

But how do we build the perfect soundscape in film, TV and video games?

This panel explores the textures of sound in film and other audio-visual media and the different processes involved in its production: capturing, designing, recreating and composing. Hear from award-winning sound editor Ania Przygoda (The Story of Looking, I Am Not A Witch, Pikadero), award-winning composer and sound artist, musical director Luci Holland (Blazing Griffin‘s Murderous Pursuits, Sayo), and Ali Murray (I am Belfast, Karama Has No Walls) as they introduce their work and share their soundscaping secrets.

Aimed at new writers, this 90-minute workshop will introduce you to the fundamentals of screenwriting while equipping participants with the tools needed to grow a seed of an idea into a super short film script. Delivered by award-winning screenwriter/director, Niamh McKeown, this practical session will cover idea generation, character development and screenplay formatting.

17:30 – 19:00 Panel - Sustainable Storytelling in the Scottish Screen Sector with Libby Penmann, Itandehui Jansen & Mairi Claire Bowser (14+ years) This panel asks the question: what might sustainable storytelling look like for the film industry? How can screen content and production, in both policy and practice, give back rather than take from environments and communities?

Join Libby Penmann (wildlife documentary filmmaker and We Are Albert ambassador), Itandehui Jansen, (documentary filmmaker, researcher at the Uni of Edinburgh and finalist in the AHRC’s Research in Film Awards 2021), and Mairi Claire Bowser (Bectu’s Screen Sustainability Manager for Scotland) as they discuss the role of sustainable screen content in Scotland. They will share their expert knowledge on the impacts of documentary and wildlife filmmaking, the importance of a people-centric approach when exploring themes of landscape protection, and how these wider themes connect and can be applied through policymaking.

Saturday 9th April 2022 10:00 – 12:00 Workshop - How to make a Film in 90 seconds with Inma De Reyes (12-16 years) Can you tell a story about the climate crisis in a 90 second film? Learn to make quality films on your mobile devices with this quick filmmaking workshop.

Aimed at 12-16-year-olds, you will leave this fun workshop with a 90-second short film to show off and perhaps even enter into Film Access Scotland’s 1.5° Film Challenge! You will be guided through the whole process; with examples and games, you will learn the different film techniques needed to make and edit your short film. Delivered by Inma de Reyes, who participated in Film Access Scotland’s 1.5 ° Film Challenge delivering workshops to community organisations on how to make a 90-second environmental film.

What does it take to launch a career in TV production? What role can you see yourself in? We will be joined by Siri Rødnes (Shetland) alongside casting director Anna Dawson (Float) and actor, co-writer and story producer Stuart McPherson (Scot Squad), who will discuss their multi-faceted careers working in the TV industry and share their expert advice on finding your way into television production.

Sunday 10th April 2022 10:00 – 12:00 Workshop - Sustainable Stop-Frame Animation for Under 12s with Ana Songel (6-11 years) Learn the magic of stop motion animation through our environmentally friendly workshop.

Aimed at under 12s, the workshop will walk you through the steps of creating a stop motion animation using upcycled materials and equipment you can find at home. Come along for a friendly educational session covering the possibilities of animation and how we can be creative and convey our love for our planet using our own hands! If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on practical activity for your Sunday, this workshop will be perfect for you.

Delivered by writer, director, animator and puppet maker, Ana Songel.

13:00 – 14:30 Panel - Addressing Inequality in Film Exhibition: Talent Development Schemes in Scotland with Theo Panagopoulos, Xuanlin Tham & Christopher Kumar (14+ years) Interested in kickstarting your career in film exhibition and curation but don’t know where to start? Hear from former participants of FEDS and New Promoters schemes about their experiences and advice for future applicants.

In a recent BFI study, statistics showed that just 4% of employees in film exhibition are from Black, Asian and ethnically diverse backgrounds (compared to 13% in the general population) and less than 5% consider themselves to have a disability (compared to 11% in the general population).

But what systems are in place to tackle this under-representation in the film exhibition sector and how can we ensure they promote lasting change? Join Theo Panagopoulos (New Promoters, Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival), Xuanlin Tham (New Promoters, Take One Action & EIFF Young Critics) and Christopher Kumar (FEDS, Glasgow Film Festival) as they share their experiences.

More importantly –what would you feel like?

Award-winning Animation Director, Illustrator and Designer Dan Castro spends an awful lot of time making characters out of simple shapes and telling stories about mental health. Come and learn a bit about him, his process and why making simple things is a great way to talk about complicated subjects. Then cut, stick and doodle some characters - based on you - to tell your own stories!
