Family-owned Harrington Enterprises flourishes

By Hannah Wingert “We pride ourselves on servicing what we sell,” said Chad Harrington of Harrington Enterprises. Chad and his wife Camri have been in the lawn and garden business together since 1999 and have made customer service their priority.

Chad began his career over

25 years ago working for Marzolf Implement in Spring Valley.

He was able to work in their lawn and garden department and found that he liked it. From there, he moved to working for Camri’s grandparents, Floyd and Ruth Caster at Dexter Lawn and Garden in Dexter.

When Dexter Lawn and Gar-

den closed, Chad bought out the inventory so he could start his own business. Originally, he was going to purchase an old gas station in Dexter and open up there, but thanks to some test wells on the property, a clean bill of sale couldn’t be produced. He and Camri ended up buying a 100-acre property about 11 miles

south of Spring Valley on Highway 63.

“The first years of a business make it or break it,” Chad said.

However, Chad and Camri had an advantage. “We retained our customers from Dexter so we started out with an established clientele,” he pointed out.

Their new property came with a house and several grain bins, but no other buildings, so the first order of business was to build a large shed that could be used to house Harrington Enterprises.

Over the years, Chad and Camri have added additional buildings for storage and other uses.

In the beginning, the Harringtons farmed their land, but they now rent it out. “We work at least 16 hours a day for at least six days a week this time of year (at Harrington Enterprises). That keeps us busy enough,” laughed Camri.

Having a business right off of Highway 63 has been helpful for Harrington Enterprises.

“It’s great frontage,” Camri noted.

“We couldn’t ask for better traffic.”

While the highway traffic has been great for business, Harrington Enterprises has proven that that’s not the only reason it’s flourished. Two years ago, Highway 63 was shut down for construction. “We were bracing for a slow year,” Chad said. It never came.

“It was the best year we ever had and that was with no highway for two months,” he added.

The bread and butter of Harrington Enterprises are their Country Clipper lawnmowers.

The Harringtons have been the recipients of seven Top Ten Dealer awards from the Country Clipper company.

They also carry Snapper lawnmowers, Archer Oil, snowblowers, chainsaws, tractor buckets and forks, seed corn, seed beans, oil, filters, and much more. “You have to be diversified,” Chad said about running a small business in a rural community.

About 80% of the Harringtons’ business comes from the local farmers. Commercial accounts make up another 5% and the remaining 15% of their customers are residential.

Despite being a lawn and garden business, Chad and Camri stay busy all year round. Over the winter months, they spend their time picking up and servicing equipment. Every Saturday, after closing up the shop for the day, Chad spends around eight hours delivering equipment and then coming back later in the evening with the trailer still full, but this time with repairs.

Chad and Camri’s 16-year-old son Carter enjoys working with his parents and hopes to someday take over the family business. Their 19-year-old daughter is away at college but is happy

Owners Greg and Maggie Ruskell work together with their employees to make their customers happy and, “We pride ourselves on doing stuff the right way and stand behind our work,” states Greg.

“Our business would not be where it is today without our great employees and the work that they do. We are fortunate and appreciative to have them and they are our most important asset,” states Greg.

The foundation of the business began over 17 years ago when Greg and his brothers were in high school and mowed

lawns in their spare time, which grew into Ruskell Lawn Service as an official business in 1994.

Greg attended the University of Wisconsin - River Falls pursuing a degree in horticulture/landscape design and then worked in the Twin Cities area doing design work and installation of landscapes before returning back to southeastern Minnesota.

Greg and Maggie Ruskell took over ownership in 2007, changing the name of the business to Ruskell Outdoor Services.

They have enjoyed providing customers with lawn services, winter services, design services, landscaping services and more.

They currently have six full-time employees and six to eight parttime employees.

“This is basically what I have done my whole life,” says Greg, aside from college, and he finds his work as interesting and exciting as ever as he looks forward to a busy spring and summer doing landscape work.

His days are interesting, as Greg says since they do so many different things, there is a vari-

ety in what he does from one day to the next.

And, of course, their work is many times weather dependent so “you never know” what may change as Greg says, “Weather throws a big wrinkle in things at times - you can be prepared to do one thing but if it rains you have to switch and find something else to do,” such as perform maintenance on equipment.

Greg is especially excited for this spring and summer, as Seth Allen from Set In Stone is now an employee of Ruskell Outdoor Services. This made perfect sense as he and Greg have worked together on numerous projects over many years.

Greg says of Allen, “His forte is retaining walls and pavers and he does very good work,” so he will be an excellent addition to the business.

When asked for any hints on how to make our yards have more “curb appeal,” Greg stated, “A landscape should be an extension of your house - it should complement the house with colors and textures but also

If you want to do the landscape work yourself, Greg says to seek a professional’s help, even if it’s just for the design, so you will be satisfied with your completed project.

When building a new home, Greg’s advice is to “get those trees started” right away - even if your budget doesn’t allow for anything else at the moment, you should get trees in the ground. Greg recalls the old saying, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.” So if you would like to one day enjoy large trees around your new home, the time to plant them is now.

As far as having a healthy lawn all summer, Greg states, “One of the best defenses against weeds is a good healthy turf - if you can keep the turf healthy and thick, you will have less weed problems” to deal with.

In the spring of 2016, Ruskell Outdoor Services created a space along Hwy. 52 in Chatfield to stockpile materials such as mulch, small rock, boulders, and more. They offer several types of mulch which can be picked up or delivered and are a way to make your yard look nicer in a hurry.

to help out as well when she’s home. Both kids grew up in the shop, starting out in a playpen when they were too little to run around. “When we first started, our daughter was only a couple of years old,” Camri said, explaining that having their own business meant that she and Chad didn’t have to pay for daycare. “It was great having them grow up here,” she added.

The timing of their business worked out perfectly for their family. As the kids grew and became more independent, the business grew as well. “We couldn’t make it work with young kids with how busy we are now,” Camri said.

Chad and Camri work hard to take care of their customers.

Chad is certified with every line they sell and everything is warrantied in house. They also stock a large number of parts so that customers don’t have to wait for them to be ordered.

“Word of mouth has been very good to us,” Chad said, something that speaks to their excellent customer service. The Harringtons are well aware that the customers are what make their business successful, and they go above and beyond to take care of them.

Restoring lawns and gardens back to their pre-winter glory is high on many a homeowner's landscaping to-do list. In much of the country, the best times to tackle lawn projects are when temperatures are moderate, like in spring and fall. These seasons also mark the best time to seed and fertilize.

Planting and fertilizing new grass seed should be done when frost is no longer a concern and before frost arrives if you are planting in autumn. According to Roger Cook, a landscape contractor and contributor to This Old House magazine, sowing lawn seed should be done when the soil is warm, the daytime temperatures are moderate and you can keep the new seeds quite moist at all times.

While grass seed can be applied in the summer, it is more challenging to get the seeds to take root and thrive at this time, as water is more likely to evaporate under the hot sun. Also, many weeds germinate in the heat of summer. As a result, the weeds can infiltrate areas of the lawn where you planted, compromising the look of your lawn.

according to the rate indicated on the seed bag for the type of grass you will be growing. Choose a grass seed that will thrive in your climate. Certain seeds are more tolerant of drought and sunlight, while other species are better for shady areas or damper climates.

Again, if you have any questions, consult with a lawn and garden center.

• Spread the seed with a broadcast spreader. Some lawn experts recommend spreading the seed in parallel rows and then repeating the process again in rows set at a right angle to the first series of rows for the best chances of seed coverage. The seeds then can be raked into the soil, covered with a little more soil and patted down.

• Water to keep the seeds damp. This may require watering twice or more per day until the seeds begin to germinate. Covering the seeds with about 1/4 inch of straw also can help keep the seeds moist, deter seed scavengers and prevent soil erosion. Remove the straw once the grass begins to grow.

• Roughly four weeks after the seeds have started to grow, apply another round of fertilizer to replenish the top layer of soil with nutrients that may have washed away from the constant watering.

Homeowners can employ a similar process to overseed a lawn in the hopes of producing a thicker, more attractive landscape. Any thatch and debris should be raked away, and the top layer of the lawn surface can be gently aerated. Top dress the lawn with a very thin layer of new soil and compost.

Broadcast the seed over the prepared lawn and lightly rake the new seeds to help them settle into the soil. Apply fertilizer and water the lawn frequently to keep the new seeds moist.

Once the seed has established itself, you can water the lawn for longer periods and less frequently to help develop strong roots. Wait for the lawn to reach a height of three to four inches before the first cut of the season.

Many homeowners like to take on the challenge of seeding and preparing their lawns. But some may find the task is best left to the professionals.

By Rich Wicks David and Marti Gray may have stumbled upon the secret to time travel. At least, that’s the impression a person receives upon entering the James A Thompson Bed & Breakfast, which they are renovating in an effort to bring it back to its condition from roughly 150 years ago. And though the restoration efforts are not yet completed, the house and grounds

exude a classic and peaceful beauty that is rare in today’s world.

Marti and David grew up in Colorado and Wyoming, but moved to Cedar Rapids (Iowa) about 35 years ago and raised their three children there. Marti shares that although they’d visited Lanesboro many times, a couple of years ago they happened to find the Thompson House by accident. Marti said

Monday, April 17, 2017 a friend had sent her a link regarding a Bed & Breakfast in Bayfield (Wisconsin) but the website included a link for “Bed & Breakfasts of the Midwest,” and when Marti clicked on that, the Thompson House popped up, and she immediately felt a connection when they realized the property was for sale. Since she always loved B & Bs, and since David always wanted to live next to a stream, they said the decision to buy was an easy one. The house is located at 401 Parkway Avenue, right between Sylvan Park and the Root River.

The brick Italianate two-story home was built sometime in the early 1870s. Marti adds, “The house is on the historic registry. The man who built it (James Thompson) is the man who first invested in Lanesboro.

They built the dam, they built the first mill, and they built a hotel. We know the dam was built in 1869, and we believe the house was built right after that.” She pointed out that the furnishings are not necessarily original to the house, but are true to the time period.

She said her true calling is in deciding how to decorate the walls and ceilings. She showed samples of various wall papers (Bradbury papers), anaglypta

She explained that the textured ceiling papers are paintable, and are often mistaken for tin ceilings. She says, “I’m so passionate about it. It’s almost a lost art!”

David told a favorite story from when the couple first moved to Lanesboro and was beginning restoration efforts.

He said a contractor had arrived to put up ceiling papers, but discovered the ceiling had gotten wet, “So he was standing there with papers, ready to

work, and couldn’t do it. So we called several contractors, and finally got ahold of Andy Bunge.” He explains that when Bunge came and checked out the situation, he realized what work was needed, but said he already had plans to go turkey hunting. But when he realized David and Marti were in a pinch, “He went out and got his knife, and spent probably two hours, and when he was leaving I asked him to See THOMPSON B&B Page 10 

When laundering linens, skip the energy-using dryer and let items line dry in the sun and fresh air.

If you decide to purchase some new items, look for products made from sustainable or organic fabrics. Hemp and bamboo textiles have grown in popularity. Hemp and bamboo plants grow quickly, and their durability makes these materials smart choices.

When replacing items around the house, donate older items to a charitable organization.

Flowers and plants Spring and summer call to mind beautiful blooming plants. Relying on native, sustainable plants is practical, environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, sustainable plants are native plants.

Native plants sustain local wildlife more effectively than nonnative alternatives, so include native plants in your sustainable garden. Native plants also are less reliant on pesticides and herbicides to keep them healthy and viable.

Don't forget to bring plants indoors as well. Even though you may be opening the windows more, indoor plants can filter and purify indoor air. The NASA Clean Air Study, led in association with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, found that certain common indoor plants naturally remove toxic agents such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air.

Efficient air cleaning is accomplished with at least one plant per 100 square feet of home or office space.

Proper disposal Spring cleaning is another tradition for many families come the end of winter and dawn of spring. Many people use spring as a time to go through closets and garages to remove items they no longer use or need. In an effort to clean up fast, some people may dispose of chemical products, paints, treated lumber, and many other items in ways that can be damaging to the environment. Always learn local municipal guidelines for proper disposal of potentially harmful products. Area recycling centers may have drop-off areas for stains and paints, used motor oil and other potentially harmful products.

Before discarding something, see if it can be donated or sold.

This will result in fewer items ending up in landfills.

Exercise caution outdoors as well. Runoff from cleaning products used on home siding or driveways can leach into the surrounding soil or find its way into sewage drains that ultimately direct fluids to public waterways. Choose environmentally responsible products whenever possible.

Springtime renovation and cleaning projects provide the perfect opportunity to adopt eco-friendly practices that pay dividends for years to come.

How to plant a tree for successful growth Learn the right way to plant a tree to improve the landscape and the environment.

More sunlight and warm temperatures frequently inspire homeowners to spend more time in the great outdoors during spring and summer.

Outdoor projects often top homeowners' to-do lists in spring and summer, with gardens and landscapes taking center stage.

Planting more trees around the yard is one popular project that can improve property value and benefit the environment.

Why plant trees?

There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing

air temperature by blocking the sun's rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer.

North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare.

They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day's worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they're healthy before taking them home. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide.

Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

Planting the tree Now it is time to amend the soil. It's not enough to enrich only the soil in the hole where the tree will be placed. Move out into a circular area beyond where the roots will start so that roots can expand and properly anchor the tree. The next method of success is to ensure that the tree has a large enough hole to contain the existing root ball and allow for roots to grow and expand. Better Homes and Gardens experts say to prepare a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball of the tree.

Stake the tree to help it stay upright and straight until the roots anchor it more effectively.

A layer of mulch around the base of the tree can prevent weeds and reduce water loss.

Data shows that Rural Development’s home loan programs increase economic development and job creation in rural communities. For example, according to the National Association of Realtors, the sale of an existing median-priced home generates more than $58,000 in economic activity. This includes direct real estate industry supports, home furnishings, appliances and landscaping and other economic activity.

The maximum loan amount for repair is $20,000 at a 1% interest rate, repayable for up to 20 years. Grants of up to $7,500 are available to homeowners 62 and older and must be used to remove health or safety hazards, such as fixing a leaking roof, installing indoor plumbing, or replacing a furnace.

Time is limited to receive these funds. Qualified applicants have until the end of September 2017 to apply. Contact a USDA Rural Development employee today in your area to see if you qualify.
