Heritage Grove resident raising money with a cookbook By Jade Wangen
jwangen@fillmorecountyjournal.com
Merlin Hoiness is 94 years old, and has lived in Harmony his entire life. He worked at the grocery store for 35 years and founded Norsland Lefse in Rushford. He wrote two cookbooks that have sold thousands of copies. He currently lives at Heritage Grove with his wife Zola, but still keeps himself busy with new ideas. His current project is a cookbook that is a compilation of recipes from Heritage Grove residents and staff. He suggested it during a board meeting. “I thought it would give people something to do,” said Hoiness. The council and the staff agreed it was a good idea. Hoiness explained that after the printing costs are covered, the rest of the proceeds will go towards an activity fund for the residents. “We don’t have an activity fund up here,” said Hoiness. “I think it will be good for them to have one.”
The books, which were printed at Big Woods Graphics in Harmony, are selling for $7.00 each. There was an Open House at Heritage Grove on December 7, and the cookbooks were first made available for purchase. So far, they have already sold more than 100 of the 250 copies printed. “It came out around Christmas time, and that made a big difference,” said Hoiness. “They make good stocking stuffers.” The cookbook can be ordered from Heritage Grove. It is also being sold at I Love Antiques, Old Ways New Ideas, Harmony Foods, and the Village Depot, all in Harmony. In 1990, Hoiness published a book called 91 Ways to Serve Lefse. There are currently 38,000 copies of those out there, having been sold all over the world. In 1996, he published Amish Recipes, a hand-written collection of recipes from the Amish. According to Hoiness, 5,000 copies of that book have been sold.
The activity fund at Heritage Grove is something Hoiness finds important. He also thinks projects like the cookbook are good for himself and the residents. “It gives me something to do,” he said. “It gives other people something to do, too. It’s good for them to keep their head working.” Hoiness and the others worked for two months compiling recipes and putting the book together. According to Hoiness, they are selling so well, they may have to print more. The activities and entertainment are something that the residents look forward to. Hoiness said they enjoy bringing people in to play music, and it’s nice to be able to pay these people to come. Hoiness has not used up all of his great ideas yet. This year he came up with the cookbook to help raise money, but next year it could be something new. “If I can think of another project, I’ll do it,” said Hoiness.

A hopeful R-P hosts Senate Tour Preston Ambulance By K irsten Zoellner kzoellner@fillmorecountyjournal.com
Aimed at furthering its New School Initiative another step, R-P played host to a contingent of the Minnesota Senate Capital Investment Committee December 15. Senators David Senjem, committee chair, Keith Langseth, Dan Sparks, Jeanne Poppe, DFL-Austin, and Jeremy Miller, as well as Representative Greg Davids, toured the elementary/high school facility
with district staff, board members Daniel Munson, John Nitecki, Beth Stanford, and six student ambassadors. “The tour went as well as could be expected, as we were pressed for time,” noted Superintendent Chuck Ehler. “I’m grateful to be a part of the tour, but in my frank opinion as to how it will impact our goal, I’m not too sure.” The district had missed the cut on a previous senate bonding tour, despite repeated pres3 Course Dinner with glass of wine 4-9pm
