Lind Family Farms

By Maddie Smith If you have been to the Fillmore County Fair or anywhere where beef is shown, there’s a good chance you have seen at least one member of the Doug Lind family. Doug and Becky Lind, along with their seven children and grandchildren, have a herd of beef cattle just outside of Rushford, Minn. The Lind family showcases their herd in beef shows on every level, ranging from local to national. Through the thick and the thin, the family embraces and overcomes the Doug and Becky Lind and their family, from Rushford, are in- challenges faced by the industry volved members of the beef industry. to make a difference in the agriPhoto submitted culture community.

During an interview, Doug states, “We don’t do it for the money. It’s a lifestyle.” This only begins to tell us how much passion a family like the Lind family puts into their work and animals. Doug and his entire family are involved on their family-run farm. As you probably could have guessed, the livestock plays a big role within the family dynamics.

On the farm Doug and his wife, The Lind family stands with their Grand Champion Red Angus bull. Becky, and seven kids (from oldPhoto submitted est to youngest: Chelsey, Colby, Lakyn, Daniel, Kjersta, Hans, and Jens) all contribute to agriculture in some form.

Doug has spent several years on the Fillmore County Fair Board and 4-H Beef Project Development Committee. Chelsey helps with the livestock at shows. Colby is the ag teacher and FFA advisor at the Rushford-Peterson High School. Within the R-P FFA Chapter, Hans is the chapter president and Jens is the sentinel.

The kids are involved with showing in Junior shows, in addition to 4-H and FFA. Lakyn continues to work right beside Doug on the farm, and each family member helps with chores, trimming cattle for shows and sales, and every other odd job that needs to be done in order to make the farm successful.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Motorists traveling on Minnesota highways this spring should be aware of large farm equipment moving from farm to farm, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

“Planting season is ramping up across Minnesota and farmers need the highways to access their fields,” said Brian Sorenson, state traffic engineer. “Motorists need to be prepared to encounter slow-moving farm vehicles, especially on rural, two-lane roads.”

According to the last three years of data, there were 386 crashes involving farm equipment in Minnesota resulting in 166 injuries and six deaths. Inattentive driving and speed were the biggest contributing factors in those crashes.

Farm equipment is large and heavy, making it hard for operators to accelerate, slow down and stop. The equipment also makes wide turns and sometimes crosses over the center line. In addition, farm vehicles can create large blind spots, making it difficult for operators to see approaching vehicles.

A BWSR-NRCS collaboration, the $3 million Watershed Conservation Planning Initiative helps producers identify resource concerns across their operation, outlines options to benefit water quality, fit their budget The Watershed Conservation Planning Initiative is preparing producers like beef cattle and crop farmer Brandon Hinderman to implement projects when the time is right.

Hinderman, whose 300acre family farm lies within the Middle Minnesota River Watershed, approached the Brown Soil & Water Conservation District about a permanent fix for a recurring gully.

He agreed to a whole-farm resource assessment that gave him a comprehensive look at his conservation concerns and laid out potential solutions.

tive brings dedicated watershed conservation planners to each of seven selected watersheds. It encompasses 35 soil and water conservation districts within the Blue Earth, Chippewa, Lower St. Croix, Middle Minnesota, Root, Sauk and Upper Cedar watersheds.

Funding is evenly split between Clean Water Funds from BWSR, and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

“A goal of this project is to increase landowner readiness to implement conservation practices by providing sciencebased planning assistance during these field assessments,” Peterson said.

Implementation is voluntary.

Free engineering and technical assistance is available to those who pursue projects within the three-year timeframe.

Hinderman had been seeking a solution for the gully in a field near the Minnesota River since spring 2014, when a 10-inch rain caused mudslides and opened a vein of silt.

He had tried removing accumulated sediment from the basin in front of the berm his dad built 30 years ago.

“We just can’t get ahead of it,” Hinderman said.

This spring, Hinderman was waiting to see engineers’ plans.

He liked the idea of stanching the erosion higher in the watershed — one of the ideas he discussed during a January site visit with Middle Minnesota Watershed Conservation Planner Jennifer Hahn.

“If we’re going to do it, it’s going to be done correctly, and hopefully it should be something that should last for another 25, 30 years,” Hinderman said.

Within each watershed, local work groups will determine priority areas. The resource assessment that comes from site visits will identify concerns and options, which the producer and planner will review together. Farmers within the targeted watersheds have a unique opportunity to receive field- or farm-scale conservation planning assistance that meshes with their farm goals and watershed-wide objectives.

“Being able to gain that additional person to help organize across county lines and provide that direct technical assistance to landowners is a pretty key piece and a good opportunity for NRCS and BWSR to collaborate within watersheds,” said NRCS’ State Water Quality Specialist Shannon Carpenter. “The end goal See WATERSHED Page 7 ➤

but they aim to produce top-tier breed genetics. Both the Angus and Herefords have been very successful at shows.

In addition to showing at Junior Nationals, the family competes at the Minnesota State Fair for 4-H and FFA, in Denver, Louisville, Fort Worth, Texas, at the Beef Expo. One cow Doug is especially proud of is a Red Angus, Alaynah. She was the Supreme Champion at the Minnesota Beef Expo and Nationals. Much of their Red Angus herd has been built around her genetics. Unfortunately, the family lost her last fall.

They still, however, have some of her embryos, making it possible to continue her genetics in the herd. The rest of the herd and other cattle have been showcased with pleasing results. The farm has yielded numerous National purple ribbons from champion, reserve champion, and division winners. “We focus on making the best of what we can,” Doug adds. With every class, there is an immeasurable amount of pride, time, and hard work invested in each animal.

One of the most relevant issues facing beef farmers is a disconnect with their consumers. Educating and informing the general public about the process to get their meat and beef products to the plate can be a challenge. That is why having community-involved beef families such as the Linds is such an important asset to communities. At shows, county and state fairs, expos, on the farm, in the classroom, and everywhere else in public, the Lind family is essentially a living encyclopedia when it comes to knowledge of the beef industry. Doug and his family are no strangers to working with others and closing in the gap between their farm and your plate.

Throughout the year, the Linds sell bulls directly off the farm and have an online female sale in the fall. They also consign to online sales. All seven planners are on board. Working with producers in the designated watersheds, they will develop a total of 700 conservation plans.

“One-hundred conservation plans in three years to me is not scary at all. I would love to double that,” Hahn said.

Since she started on Oct. 1, Hahn has completed 25 conservation plans, met with 52 producers and completed more than 40 site visits. She works with producers within locally prioritized areas of the eight-county Middle Minnesota Watershed, where soil erosion, water quality, and water storage tend to be farmers’ top concerns Based in Brown County and hosted by Redwood SWCD, Hahn had worked with producers in Redwood, Renville, Cottonwood and Brown counties during her 12 years with NRCS. A few years ago, she worked with the Hindermans on a manure storage facility. In January, they discussed the washouts, and talked about replacing a battered windbreak with a grove of more diverse tree species.

“My dad and I know the lay of the land. We know where our issues are. You (might) have somebody else who comes out here and doesn’t really listen to your issues or take your point of view into consideration. I just felt like when (Hahn) came out that we were on the same page and could get something finalized,” Hinderman said.
