G.L.O.W. : GO LIGHT OUR WORLD

This year’s Grand Alumni Homecoming highlighted the 100th year of our beloved Maryknoll Sisters here in the Philippines. Our Maryknoll/Miriam College Homecoming theme entitled “G.L.O.W. – Go Light Our World!” was hosted by Maryknoll High School Class of 1987, held at the college grounds last September 8, 2012.

Our homecoming celebration started with Registration and Election of ten (10) new MMCAA Board Directors at the Lower Lanai.

Anticipated mass celebrated by Father Clod Bagabaldo was sponsored by High School & College 2002 and the Liturgical Choir Alumni at the College Chapel followed by the most anticipated Homecoming Program at the Marian Auditorium. The program began with the national anthem and invocation of Sister Helen Graham followed by an interpretative dance number from our selected SAID students. MMCAA Chairperson Matec Villanueva welcomed the alumni and guests and introduced the present MMCAA Board. MMCAA President Madonna Tarrayo presented a short AVP on the MMCAA’s activities and projects for the past year. One of the significant part of the homecoming program is the presentation of our Amazing Alumni Achievers, fondly referred to as 3AAAs. This year, MCHS’87 presented our two (2) Amazing Women namely Magdalena Jamias-Badua and Elizabeth Dizon-Hoban while our award-winning High School Glee Club under the leadership of Ms. Nancy C. Roman performed their winning piece “Para Sa Yo Bayani”. But what made the Triple A presentation extra special was the presence of a live sand artist where his evolving creative designs were being projected in the background while our 3AAA winners were going up the stage.

Dr. Glenda Fortez, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Miriam College represented Miriam College President Dr. Rosario Oreta-Lapus (HS ’58), who delivered Dr Lapus’ message and presented to the alumni community the members of the President’s Council. The 2012 Jubilee classes then presented their class gifts to Dr. Fortez and Ms. Rose Linda Olympia-Bautista, Vice-President for Development Resource Management. Ms. Bautista presented an AVP of the ground breaking ceremony of our new Miriam College Nuvali campus.

But the biggest highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the production numbers prepared by the 7 Jubilee classes namely: HS 1962, College 1972, HS 1972, HS 1982, College 1987, College 2002 and the Silver Jubilee host class High School 1987. Our Silver Jubilarians ended the short but sweet homecoming program with the song “What makes you beautiful”, they were joined onstage by our ever talented Miriam College Grade School Dance Club. The turnover ceremony, MCHS 1987 passing on the responsibility of hosting our jubilee homecoming next year to MCHS 1988 was represented by Ma. Theresa T. Defensor. Right after the program, everybody trooped to the college cafeteria and basketball gym to grab some food to eat offered by our various concessionaires and to dance the night away with the great music of Kudos Loves 80’s.

Indeed, it was a time of nostalgia and camaraderie with our fellow classmates whom we have not met since our graduation day. The renewed friendships, the fun and laughter the whole alumni and school community shared that night were truly memorable. Let us treasure these memories in our hearts as we continue our mission to “go light our world” in the true Maryknoll/Miriam way.

MIRIAM COLLEGE SCIENCE GARDEN LAUNCHED The Miriam College community came in full force last September 14 to “wonder and wander” during the launch of the school’s first Science Garden. The garden is an open classroom created as part of efforts to intensify the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program.

The activity opened with a blessing by Sr. Nora A. Maulawin, M.M. and an opening ceremony by the Cultural/Classical Dance Club led by April Toledo. This was followed by a message from Miriam College President Rosario O. Lapus who described the Science Garden as a living laboratory of learning where “children very early on can connect, love, and learn to be responsible for Nature and Mother Earth.”

Dr. Lapus then led the Untying of Ribbon with the Vice-president for Development and Resources Management office Rose Linda Bautista, Basic Education Unit Director Dr. Ma. Corazon Reyes and Administrative Services Director Cynthia Morales. The symbolic release of butterflies by Dr. Lapus and granddaughter Sofie then signalled the start of the tour of the garden. Guests composed of alumni and parent-teacher officers, went around the different sections to participate in interactive modules prepared by faculty and students from the different units and the Environmental Studies Institute. Activities included preparing herbal medicines, soil experiments, vermicomposting, and soil chemistry testing.

The Science Garden serves as a fertile venue for experiential learning so that students can see, feel, observe, discover and understand various biological processes in an outdoor setting.

The garden features an Outdoor Classroom, Shadehouse/Nursery, Butterfly Garden, Urban Garden section, Herb and Medicinal Garden, Composting and Vermiculture areas, Pond and Aquaphonics area, Pedology Section, and Vegetable and Trellis Walkway.

DR. LAPUS MEETS WITH PARENT-TEACHER OFFICERS Officers of the parent-teacher groups of the different academic units gathered last September 14 for their annual meeting with the President’s Council, led by the Miriam College President Rosario O. Lapus. The informal get-together gives officers a chance to meet the members of the President’s Council and other MC administrators up close, as well as fellow officers from other units.

In her message to the parents, Dr. Lapus defined the school’s direction, emphasizing Quality, Relevance and Sustainability (QRS) of programs at all levels. Specific goals include achieving smaller class sizes, introducing more innovative programs and learning tools, and enhancing teaching, therefore, enriching the learning experience of MC students across academic units.

This yearly tradition has been a meaningful venue for strengthening school-parent partnership and encouraging collaboration among the different units.

MC, VESTA PROPERTY HOLDINGS, INC. SIGN DEED OF ABSOLUTE SALE Miriam College and Vesta Property Holdings, Inc. signed a Deed of Absolute Sale (DOAS) last August 30 upon full purchase of the 12hectare land in Nuvali, an Ayala Land development project in Laguna. The signing was held at Tower 1 Building and Exchange Plaza Ayala Triangle. Present were (from left) Aniceto V. Bisnar, Jr., Vesta Property Holdings, Inc. general manager; John R. Estacio, Nuvali operations; Dr. Rosario O. Lapus, Miriam College president; Myrna G. Vidal, Miriam College Finance director; and Rose Linda O. Bautista, Miriam College vice president for Development and Resource Management.

Miriam College and Vesta signed the Contract to Sell last May 9, 2012 during the soft launch of Miriam College campus in Nuvali.

School operation is set in 2015.

MC Watch by SWATCH (Fundraising Project of MCHS 1958) This limited edition Maryknoll/ Miriam SWATCH is a fund raising project of Maryknoll High School Class of 1958.

Proceeds from sales will benefit the Miriam College Museum.

As a fitting tribute to the school's colorful history, this SWATCH therefore, not only symbolizes the passing of time.

More importantly, it is a reminder to all of us of the importance of remembering and learning from the past, in order to celebrate the present and create the future.

Caritas Bag (Fundraising Project of MCHS 1987)

FUNDRAISING: MARYKNOLL HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1988 The Maryknoll College High School Class of 1988, would like to invite everyone to watch Repertory Philippines Theater’s production of the “Camp Rock: The Musical" a stage adaptation of the Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" films that features songs from Camp Rock (2008) and from Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010). Directed by Mr. Audie Gemora.

Part of the proceeds of this effort will be given to the Miriam College Swimming Pool Project called, “Make a Splash in 2013” and Miriam College Endowment fund, through the help of the Maryknoll/Miriam College Alumni Association.

Sponsored play dates of the batch will be on November 25, 2012 (Sunday) and December 1, 2012 (Saturday), at 3:30 in the afternoon, at Repertory’s OnStage Theater, Greenbelt 1, Makati City.

Mary Ann graduated from Maryknoll College in 1987 with a degree in B.S. Psychology. With 27 years of experience in food and beverage sales retail and customer service, she is currently a manager that handles the Greater Manila Area of Purefoods Hormel Company, Inc.

AMAZING ALUMNI ACHIEVER

ELAINE GAVINO-URBANO (GS ‘79, HS ‘83, COL ‘87) MMCAA Vice-Chairperson (S.Y. 2011-2012)

A consistent dean’s lister and leader during her school years in Maryknoll. She graduated Cum Laude with a degree of Bachelor of Arts Major in Communication Arts. She previously served the MMCAA Board for several years as its P.R.O., V.P. for Membership and Vice-Chairperson. She last served in 2009 as MMCAA P.R.O. She headed the 25th Jubilee Celebration of High School Batch 1983 last September 2008 where the batch successfully produced a two-hour homecoming program with more than a thousand people in attendance where jubilarians brought their family, relatives and friends to watch the professionally done and seamless production, a first in MMCAA homecoming history.

Korina is known in the industry and to her peers for her adherence to excellence in production, accuracy in reporting, conducting exclusive interviews. To the public, her clarity of thought, sound commentary, versatility in conversation, unwavering stand on current events, issues and her advocacies which she pursues relentlessly stand out.

As the youngest in the newsroom in her first job at Channel 4, Korina rose from the ranks as weathergirl, hourly newsbreak announcer, beat reporter and pinch-hit anchor to the seniors. She is one of the handful of pioneers in the reopened ABS-CBN Channel 2 newsroom in 1986. From being reporter there of current events, beat departments, military sieges, catastrophes, tragedies and shootouts, Korina proved herself just as capable in other areas of the industry and business when she became Executive Producer and host of several award-winning programs.

Korina also wrote regular columns for a number of local publications, making her a certified tri-media journalist. She has won

numerous awards from all of the prestigious award giving bodies for television. Today Korina writes, directs and hosts the top-rating weekly primetime program Rated K and is Chief Correspondent for the ABS-CBN News Division.

Korina Sanchez, has gone way beyond the borders of a journalist who basically investigates and reports the facts. In her more than two decades as a media practitioner, she has captured the imagination, admiration, adulation and support of Philippine society mainly because her products and her activities go beyond the limited definition of a journalist. Korina as a personality is synonymous to advocacy, crusading, charity and heart.

IN MEMORIAM  In your prayers, please remember FILOMENA RAMOS-LEDESMA (GS ’51, HS ’55). Mrs. Ledesma joined our Creator last January 21, 2012.

 We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of DR. JOSE GENATO JR., father of former Trustee Ma. Carmencita G. Henson (HS ’70, COLL ’74). Dr. Genato died last August 2012, from massive heart attack. Please remember him in your prayers.  Please join in your prayers the passing of former MMCAA Trustee MARION MARTINEZ (GS ’91, HS ’95, Coll ’99). Ms. Martinez joined her Creator last September 6, 2012. May the Lord grant her eternal rest.

 Our condolences to the family of CANUTO SENEN ORETA, brother of Miriam College President Dra. Rosario A. Lapus (HS ‘58). She is now in the arms of our Holy Family in heaven. He began his peaceful journey to his eternal home last September 3, 2012. Please include him in your prayers.  Also please pray for the eternal repose of the soul of SONIA P. NER (COLL ’69). Mrs. Ner joined her Creator last September 24, 2012.
