Destinação Brasil 2014

Page 58

For the third consecutive year the Guadalajara International Book Fair opens its doors to Brazilian literature, and in this 2014 twelve new authors join the 23 who have participated in previous years’ Festivals. Attendees of the event will hear about different, contrasting and even contradictory Brazil’s—fictions nurtured by the landscapes of the Pernambuco in Northeast Brazil, the vibrant city of São Paulo, or the extreme south; Brazilians against Samba; Brazilians living in California or born in Buenos Aires and writers from areas with depleted gold mines. This year’s Destinação Brasil promises a diverse tour through this enormous country about which very little is known, in terms of its literature, in the rest of our continent. We continue to work on building a bridge between Brazilian literature and the rest of the continent and on the Guadalajara International Book Fair continuing to serve as a showcase for Hispanic America to get to know Brazil’s new literary values and its acclaimed authors who are little-known outside their country. This year, in addition to Destinação Brasil’s enticing selection of authors, the Carlos Fuentes FIL Salón Literario will be inaugurated by the prominent Brazilian Nélida Piñón, the first woman to become president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, winner of the Juan Rulfo Prize and the Prince of Asturias Letters Award, who will discuss the relationship between Brazilian literature and that of the rest of the world with Nicaraguan writer, Sergio Ramírez. This year’s bet on Destinação Brasil would not have been possible without the efforts of the National Library Foundation, part of Brazil’s Culture Ministry, who we thank for their continued faith in us, even in times of severe budget cuts. For all those avid readers looking to discover new stories, who each year expect the FIL to surprise them and for professionals looking for business opportunities, the destination is Brazil.
