Students must Prep Up for Common Entrance Test for a Seat in Central Universities UGC has announced that from the academic year 2022–2023, all the central universities have to provide admission to students to undergraduate programmes solely based on Common University Entrance Test or CUET. From this year, central universities will not give any weightage to class 12th marks and students will get admission to colleges based on their CUET marks. UGC Chairman has revealed that the first-ever Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to undergraduate programmes in the 54 central universities will be conducted in July’s first week. The exam will be conducted by the National Testing Agency.

The NTA is an autonomous premier testing organization established by the Ministry of Education. It has been given the responsibility to conduct the undergraduate entrance tests for all the Central Universities for the academic session 2022–2023. Common University Entrance Test or CUET will give a single window opportunity to students who are looking to take admission in any of the Central Universities across the country. The CUET will be conducted in Computer Based Test Mode and the online application forms for the undergraduate programmes will be open from April 2nd, 2022 to April 30th, 2022. It will be an Objective Type test with Multiple Choice Questions. All the questions will be benchmarked at the level of class XII. All the CUET aspirants are advised to go through the eligibility criteria of the desired university for choosing the options from the UG Programmes being offered.

This step is basically taken to give fair opportunities to students of every board to study in India’s top universities. There is diversity in the evaluation method of different boards, as some boards are generous in marking so the students of those boards enjoy an unfair advantage over others. This test will give equal opportunity to every student, as NTA will prepare a merit list following the CUET, according to which students will get admission in universities. The first-ever mandatory common entrance test for admission to undergraduate programmes in all the 54 Central Universities will be held in the first week of July.

The CUET will comprise of the following 4 sections namely, Section IA, Section IB, Section II, and Section III. Section IA has 13 different languages such as English, Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, and Odia, whereas Section IB has 19 different languages such as French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese. Students will have the option to choose a maximum of 3 languages from Section IA and IB. There will be a total of 50 questions in both these sections out of which students have to attempt 40 questions. Forty-five minutes of time will be allotted for each language.

In Section II, there will be 27 domain-specific subjects and students can choose a maximum of six subjects as desired by the applicable university. The 27 subjects include Accountancy or Book Keeping, Biology or Biological Studies or Biotechnology or Biochemistry, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science or Informatics Practices, Economics or Business Economics, Engineering Graphics, Entrepreneurship, Geography or Geology, History, Home Science, Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India, Legal Studies, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physical Education or NCC or Yoga, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Teaching Aptitude, Agriculture, Mass Media or Mass Communication, Anthropology, Fine Arts or Visual Arts or Commercial Arts, Performing Arts that include dances like Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Oddisi, Kathakali, Kuchipudi, Manipuri or Drama like Theatre, Music General (Hindustani/ Carnatic/ Rabindra Sangeet/ Percussion/ Non-Percussion), and Sanskrit. This section will also have a total of 50 questions out of which students have to attempt 40 questions and forty-five minutes time will be allotted for each domain-specific subject.

Section III will be a General Test. This exam has the potential to be a game-changer for the students, as they will not have to freshly apply in different colleges of their choice and fulfil the application procedure in every college. With just a single test, they will get admission to a college based on their performance in the CUET. Students will need to prepare well for this exam to increase their chance of seeking admission to some of India’s best colleges. Candidates who are consistent in their studies and keenly focus on the NCERT syllabus with absolute clarity of the concepts will stand a good chance in the entrance exam.

It is an all-India highly competitive entrance exam and hence all the appearing candidates should have a well-planned strategy to qualify for this exam. First of all, they should be aware of the exam syllabus, along with the exam pattern, and structure of the test. Students should gain conceptual clarity on each subject and should also work upon their weaknesses by finding the root cause behind their weaknesses and should work on improving their weaknesses.

Students should prepare depending upon their strengths and weaknesses and should take the help of their teachers and mentors while preparing for the CUET. It is expected that NTA will release an online mock test on its official website so that students get familiar with the navigation system. The mock test will also help students to practice the usage of a virtual keyboard, calculator, along with switching among sections and from question to question. After taking the mock test, students should also analyses their performance because this will help them succeed in the exam.
