W E L C O M E T O the winter edition of Fig —a cheerful celebration of Lancaster City’s small business community and impactful non-profits who bring joy and meaning to our holiday gatherings and a smile to our faces.

This winter season marks 16 years of spreading the love-local message through Fig. When our team sat down to dream up this issue, we thought about capturing the happiness that can be found all around us—in a great cup of tea, a meaningful conversation, or a beautiful sunrise.

For our annual Gift Guide, we set out to find a place that symbolized those feelings to showcase the unique goods our local retail businesses have to offer this holiday season.

On an ideal fall day in October, our annual retail shoot was hosted at the stunning Conestoga House and Gardens—an early 1800s gem on the fringe of the city and home to famouslymanicured gardens—serving as the perfect backdrop to honor our business community.

Fresh Face: Central Market Flowers CENTR AL MARKET FLOWERS on Queen is the newest addition to the Perfect Pots locations. Laura Lapp, the owner, is excited to expand and offer new services while staying true to the quality customers have come to expect. Lapp started her business from her garage, making custom container gardens for family and friends, but word spread, and Lapp watched Perfect Pots grow into a company with five locations!

The perfect location needed to be close to Central Market because that was the center of their operation. They also needed a space to design products for weddings and large events, so when one of her staff members told her about the "For Rent" sign in the beautiful window at the corner of Queen and Walnut, Lapp acted immediately.

Lapp credits the growth of her business to quality work and quality service.

“We’ve grown our business by putting out excellent products and then taking genuine care of our customers because we sincerely want to build lasting relationships with them.” The business

The building has been a flower shop for over 30 years, and Lapp is proud to continue the legacy of providing flowers, plants, and floral designs.

Fresh Face: Urban Ave T H E U R B A N AV E origin story is one of daring, innovation, and style.

The staging and design company’s co-founders Hannah Royer and Monica Ceresini, are young, multi-talented entrepreneurs who started their staging business in April 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Before the shutdown, the two were on the same team at a local real estate brokerage and connected over a shared love of interior design and staging.

At the beginning of the pandemic, real estate agents weren’t allowed to show homes in person, making their jobs very difficult. “Buyers and sellers could only see and list homes online. Buyers saw

an empty house and couldn’t get a full vision of the space, and sellers couldn’t highlight the strengths of their homes.

We knew our passion for interior design and staging could help,” says 28-year-old Royer. When a local realtor reached out to the duo for help staging a home, they got creative and optimized the space while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

With the use of technology (drones that fly around homes and give real-time video tours) and a savvy social media strategy, word spread quickly, and they were open for business. “What sets us apart is our ability to understand and highlight the style of the seller

and knowing what homebuyers are looking for in a listing,” says 25-year-old Ceresini. The young business owners consult with sellers and utilize their keen sense of style to choose pieces that fit the home’s aesthetic. While they have a warehouse full of furniture for staging, they also work with local furniture stores for interior design jobs.

Fresh Face: American Dragon Fine Art Gallery L E N A L I U , the founder of American Dragon International Fine Art Gallery, has art in her DNA. Born in Beijing, China, Liu’s passion for art comes from her family and the rich culture of her homeland. A friend introduced Liu to the Association for International Cultural Exchanges in China, where she saw the beauty of the nations' shared and collective stories, while meeting several talented artists from around the world. “Although many were excellent, they were limited to their region, income level, culture, and language.” Liu saw art exhibitions as a way to showcase an artist’s talent without limitations.

Liu has been an independent curator for more than 10 years. She now lives in Lancaster and runs the gallery with her husband, Joseph Gaskins, while making time to travel all over the world to discover artists. She connects them to a global art market and some of the best art galleries and auction venues, such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Basel Art Fair, and private collector museums.

American Dragon International Fine Art gallery is a colorful addition to this community, bringing the beauty of international art to Lancaster City. Liu and Gaskins would like the gallery to become an active part of the community. They host several winter festivals for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Chinese New Year, combining art exhibitions with live music.

They would also like to help promote young artists in the gallery by working with local colleges—connecting the international art scene to the wealth of talent in this beautiful city.

As an occupational therapist (OT), she creates care plans customized to increase the ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) of persons with dementia, but Stankiewicz also works with caregivers using Skills2Care ® —an evidence-based program in which an OT teaches the caregiver to identify ways to manage daily tasks or challenging behaviors associated with dementia.

OTs trained in Skills2Care ® provide specific, actionable suggestions and work with the caregiver to develop a personalized plan that fits their lives. Action plans include stress management and communication

techniques, environmental adaptations, and methods to improve their loved one’s activity engagement.

With one in seven adults over the age of 71 years old being diagnosed with some form of dementia, there is a great need for compassionate care.

“There’s honor in being a caregiver, and I want to make sure they feel supported in that role. I provide them with resources, training, and a listening ear, allowing them to care for their loved one without feeling burnout,” says Stankiewicz. She is sensitive to the emotional needs of both patient and caregiver, and will soon have a “Capable CareBox” available—a curated toolkit specifically for dementia caregivers.

GIRLS ON THE RUN

Sandoe first learned of Girls on the Run when she was conducting research in graduate school. She came across a study that examined perception of leadership in girls. The research found that young boys and girls equally want to be leaders. Then something happens in middle school, where the number of girls who raise their hands drops dramatically. They begin to lose their confidence to lead. She shared her dismay with a peer, and they introduced her to Carrie Johnson, founder of Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon.

Sandoe instantly fell in love with the organization and served on the board for seven years before becoming the new Executive Director this fall.

Sandoe empowers her clients to believe in their voice, presence, and power—just like the girls in Girls on the Run. “You have a light for a reason. It shines in the darkness, in a world that’s so full of pain, challenge, and systems of oppression and trauma. F I R S T E S TA B L I S H E D as the Lancaster County Council of Churches, the Lancaster County Food Hub was founded in 1947 by a collection of churches who unified their community service efforts for neighbors in need. The organization developed into a large social service agency providing food, clothing, and winter shelter for neighbors who were struggling to make ends meet.

In 2016, in response to growing community needs, a new building was acquired that expanded service capacity five times over.

Recently renamed, the Food Hub is the only county-wide service organization to offer free food, clothing, and emergency shelter under one roof in a low-barrier infrastructure. It now manages more than 1 million pounds of food and 60,000 pounds of clothing for thousands of people annually and provides emergency shelter 365 nights a year. A large core of dedicated volunteers share over 11,000 service hours yearly­— equivalent to five full-time staff to keep expenses low and resources focused on client needs.

Dream team WH E N IT COM E S TO PROVI D I NG E XCE LLE NT T E M P O R A R Y W O R K E R S , TriStarr knows how to get the job done. TriStarr teamed up with long-time client Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and Rock Lititz to create a Community Vaccination Center (CVC) in an empty department store at Park City Mall. When TriStarr first received the request for staffing in February 2021, they felt confident they could quickly meet the hiring needs. The initial proposal of 100 positions might be higher than usual, and it might be a pandemic, but they had done it before. Little did they know that the community’s needs would grow, and they would hire more than ten times that amount.

The team soon realized they would need more staff to run a safe, orderly, and efficient vaccine clinic. TriStarr needed to stretch their net wider and hire various roles, from non-clinical administrative employees to people doing temperature checks, translators, and licensed clinical staff performing vaccinations. In collaboration with Rock Lititz, TriStarr was able to staff positions to help with the staging of equipment and crowd management. Together, three organizations made daily assessments of what was working, what was needed, and what should be changed.

TriStarr’s recruiting effort shifted to a seven-day-a-week schedule but maintained quality control. Every temp position met the same standards, including a background check and drug test before being approved to work at the center. In the end, the company hired over 1,100 staff positions, the center fully vaccinated more than 115,000 people, and the CVC was estimated to be one of the most cost-effective vaccination centers in the country.

F O R N E A R LY 3 0 Y E A R S , Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has operated school-based health centers for School District of Lancaster students, providing essential medical services that keep students healthy and in school.

Since opening its first location at Fulton Elementary in 1993, the partnership today includes two other elementary schools and McCaskey High School, and stands as a national model for effectively improving the health and well-being of students and their families.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health continues to bridge the gap between education and primary care by providing quality medical services. “The teachers are our greatest referral. I remember the early days at Fulton Elementary— we had about 40% of the students enrolled in the program. By the end of the second year of the clinic, 98% of the students enrolled. So much of it had to do with continuing our collaborative relationship by working together 94

with the school staff and communicating with parents about the services we can provide for their families,” says Alice Yoder, Executive Director of Community Health for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.

The Community Health team stresses the importance of removing barriers to students receiving healthcare and does everything in their power to keep students well and in the classroom.

The partnership between the school district and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health provides the opportunity to meet students’ healthcare needs and empower them to take charge of their health.

After the success seen at Fulton Elementary, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health continued to provide free healthcare, even after the five-year federal grant expired, and expanded to Carter & MacRae Elementary and to George Washington Elementary, respectively. In 2016 the health system opened an extension of Downtown Family Medicine at J.P. McCaskey High School, and in March of 2020, amid a global health crisis, McCaskey became the home base for essential COVIDrelated healthcare.

The health clinic became a testing site, assisted with contact tracing, and in 2021, began offering the vaccine as soon as it was authorized for ages 16+. “I am so proud of our team for pivoting to address these critical needs, while maintaining their dedication to providing access to meet all health needs. Our staff are here as trusted adults, not just to help students with their medical needs, but to listen to their concerns, celebrate with them in their successes, and to encourage them to do their best in school,” says Jessica Klinkner, the Manager of Community Health and Wellness.

“We have been working hand in hand with the school for such a long time, developing relationships by working together on other significant issues, so during the pandemic, we were able to take action quickly. We know that we can all work effectively by ourselves, but we also know that by working together, we can be much more effective in meeting the needs of our community.”

Thanks to the partnership between Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and the School District of Lancaster, and the tireless efforts of frontline workers, public health officials, teachers, and other education officials, Lancaster can proudly (and safely) say, school’s in session.

While they couldn’t mention every health professional who has faithfully served in Lancaster’s schools, the Community Health team wanted to thank Dr. Clark McSparren, a pediatrician who gave over 20 years of voluntary service to the school-based clinics.

All of the clinics meet COVID-related needs in addition to providing primary care services. The commitment from Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health staff and school district administrators enabled the McCaskey clinic to remain

LANCASTER COUNTY SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY: Taking a bold and meaningful approach to managing trash.

Although most Lancastrians don’t ponder what happens to their trash after it leaves the curb, it’s all LCSWMA thinks about. Their number one priority is how to best receive, process, transport, manage, dispose, and recycle nearly one million tons of solid waste annually. Not only that, but they’re always thinking about how to use waste as a resource for the community and create renewable energy.

As commercial haulers and residents come in and out of the Transfer Station Complex all day delivering household refuse, construction and demolition materials, tires, refrigerators, paint, household hazardous waste, and more, most of their 400 daily customers never notice the renewable energy projects around them. They are surprised to learn that 80 percent of the Transfer Station Complex is powered by the 2,000 solar panels on its roofs. If customers take a closer look, they will notice a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station. This alternative fuel source offers a reduction in air emissions and powers LCSWMA’s transfer fleet and other commercial fleets in our area.
