Letter from the Director Dear Turner Center Members, The FiftyForward J. L. Turner Center is having a Friday Night Dance! On Friday, July 18th from 6:00-8:00pm, we will be kicking up our heels and learning some new dances all while enjoying great music. The theme for this dance is line dancing and several of our line dancing instructors will be on hand to teach attendees how to groove to some country tunes. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. All monies raised go to support the activities at the Turner Center. Also, please bring a side dish or dessert to share—main dish will be provided by Lakeshore The Meadows. Please see Candace Waligora if you have any questions. We hope to see you on July 18th!

Feel The Beat (not the heat) in July For the month of July, we are focusing on MUSIC! Hearing a melody can make you happy, get your feet moving, or even inspire you! We’ve got a lot of activities and events planned with music in mind. Did you play an instrument at some point in your life? We’d like to hear about it at our Storytelling Time. Q: My father is living with dementia. He used to enjoy music, but he gets tired of listening to our limited
library. Do you have any suggestions for music related programs for seniors or those living with dementia that may get my father to smile

Ask The Social Worker A: Your father may benefit from music therapy services. According to the American Music Therapy Association, "Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program." Music Therapy can help lift the depression that so often accompanies dementia, and it may help to stimulate brain function. Get in touch with the Tennessee Association for Music Therapy by emailing tamtpresident@gmail.com. If you are looking for something a little more leisurely and less therapeutic in nature, Music for Seniors offers monthly musical programs aimed directly at older adults. Your father can enjoy the company of others in his peer group while listening to affordable concerts that just might bring back a good memory or two.
