Fidus Museum

THE FIDUS MUSEUM MANIFEST Introduction The FIDUS MUSEUM – in progress- will be a virtual museum, to show the art work of FIDUS. This will be completed by some of his books, catalogues and published reproductions, bookplates and series of graphic art.

Fidus (Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Höppener (8 October 1868 – 23 February 1948), born in Lübeck, Germany, is an important artist of the so called Art Nouveau (Jugendstil), with strong influences of Symbolism.

He was named Fidus ‘The Faithful’ by his art teacher Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach.

Fidus made numerous paintings, graphic art, book illustrations, and founded his own publishing company, First called the St. Georgsbund, later the Fidus Verlag in Berlin, Woltersdorf bei Erkner, in which of nearly all his art work reproductions, mainly postcards, were made and sold..

The Fidus Museum is an international initiative to make the work of Fidus avaliable and visible to readers and the Art World.

Fidus can only be understood, if placed in the time he lived in, and the turmoil in society of that time. He lived through two World wars, and he sought recognition throughout his whole life.

His art work is seen as related to Esotherics and Occultism and that made it quite controversial.

His influence though was rather big – as he was seen a one of the pioneers of the so called ‘Lebensreform’ and the German youth movement like ‘Die Wandervögel’.

At this virtual Museum, that we want to create as an open source site, we will publish gradually all we can find.

The only monography on his life and work is –though sold out- still easy to find at Ebay and booksites like addall.com.

It is called: “FIDUS 1869 – 1948 , Zur ästhetischen Praxis bürgerlicher Fluchtbewegungen”,

By Frecot / Geist / Kerbs. First edition München, 1972, second extended edition 1997.

The title of this comprehensive book points at the position of Fidus in the context of Society, that was analysed according to the Frankfurter School. Thus rather critical.

It is lavishly illustrated, and has a very good bibliography.

DAS FIDUS MUSEUM MANIFEST Einführung Das FIDUS MUSEUM – in Entwicklung – wird ein virtuelles Museum um die Kunst von Fidus zu zeigen.

Dazu eine öffentliche digitale Bibliothek von Bücher und Kataloge, sowie Ex Libris, Reproduktionen und Kunst Mappen.

Fidus (Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Höppener (8 Oktober 1868 – 23 Februar 1948), wurde geboren in Lübeck, ist ein wichtiger Künstler der Jugendstil mit Einflüsse vom Symbolismus.

Er bekam sein Name Fidus (der Treue) von sein Lehrer Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach.

Fidus hat ein grosses Oeuvre erstellt von Gemälde, Graphik, wie Illustrationen in Zeitschriften Ex Libris und Bücher.

In sein eigenem Verlag vom St Georgbund, sowie das Fidus Verlag in Berlin, Woltersdorf bei Erkner wurden von fast alle Kunstwerke von Fidus postkarten und grössere Bilder gemacht und verkauft.

Das Fidus Museum ist ein internationales Initiativ mit dem Ziel die Kunst von Fidus mehr sichtbar und zugänglich zu machen für Leser einerseits und die Kunstwelt anderseits.

Fidus kann mann nur verstehen wenn mann ihm sieht in seiner Zeit, die Zeitgeist um die Jahrhundertwende von den 19ten zu den 20sten JH. Fidus kommt aus der Zeit das die Jugendstil entstand wurde, und wurde selber zu einen bekannte Künstler dieser Strömung. Er lebte in zwei Weltkriegen und suchte sein ganzes Leben nach anerkennung für sein Kunst, die er als erneuerend sah, mit etwa Messianischen bedeutung, vernetzt mit den Lebensreform bewegung, die Aufbruch der Jugend in die Jugendbewegung wie die Wandervögel, sowie auch verknüpft mit Esoterismus, Christentum und Okkultismus, wie in die Theosophie und Anthroposophie.

Sein Kunst wurde als kontroversial gesehen, und er wurde im Dritten reich gerade noch nicht zu den Entarteten Kunst gerechnet, aber sonst im NationalSozialismus radikal –zwar mit einem Ausnahme, nicht verboten- abgelehnt.

Das Fidus Museum möchten wir aufbauen als ‘Open Source’ Museum. Mittlerweilen werden wir alles was wir zugänglich vorfinden publizieren.

Das einzige moderne Buch über Fidus, ist die Monographie : “FIDUS 1869 – 1948 , Zur ästhetischen Praxis bürgerlicher Fluchtbewegungen”, Von Frecot / Geist / Kerbs. First edition München, 1972, zweite erweiterte Druck 1997.

Es ist zwar ausverkauft, aber einfach zu finden bei Ebay oder AddAll.com.

Diesem Buch wurde aus der ideologischen einsichten der Frankfurter Schule geschrieben und ist dann allerdings sehr kritisch. Und voller ‘Urteile’ in rrelation mit die Gesellschaftliche Kontext.

Es ist ausgiebig illustriert und hat eine sehr gute bibliographie.
